⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider This is a great example of what to do when your skipper falls off the boat.
Starting off by going for the high speed on the Hobie 16 as usual. This session was not the best because of having rudders that were kicking up.
That was caused by too much weather helm.

Was great to have you back on board Skipper! MoB training paid off!
Great job David, you're certainly getting a lot of love from the viewers!
@@JoyriderTV thanks for vote of confidence! Had best Cat clinic training of course!
Hey David 👋
Your maneuver was excellent!
Excellent David
This is good for a textbook
👏
Good rescue man. Way to keep your thoughts together and act appropriately
Well done fellows! This has got to be the only UA-cam channel left that has no BS! Thanks so much for all the great coaching and inspiration to get out on a cat! 🐱
Joe, I hope the RYA has recognised your contribution to the hobby and sport of sailing. Keep it up dude!
I'm sure that i'll get my medal at some point! Thanks.
The RYA have officially endorsed him as a new form of drogue, but recommend he hangs onto a bit of line. 🤣😂😅
Great job, David. I was impressed by how quickly you took control of the boat.
Cheers James!
David is my Hero!
Well done guys! I bought my first cat last year and this channel has been a fantastic learning tool! I haven't had anyone to teach me to sail so thank you guys so much for putting this level of high detail content out there for the new guys like me!
Great to hear! I'm very glad that it's all been helping so much.
Well done David! It reminded me of when I was sailing with my dad and he would throw a tennis ball overboard and let go of the tiller. It was up to me to go back and get close enough so he could reach down to pick up.
That sounds like a great exercise. Nice
Excellent idea. I'll try it both for something to do out there and for novice cat sailors to hone their skills with.
nice job Dave and Joe!
🤩
Cheers!
Tricky work in those winds, great job crew!
I thought so!
It's amazing to see how methodical you both are. I think I would have panicked and jumped in the water to go get you. 😂
Thanks!
Loved it Joe! I have a video of myself doing the same thing. My crew Anton also did an amazing job. Glad to see we are in good company 😁
🤩
Good to see I’m not the only one that sometimes abandons ship mid-outing. Well done, David!
Yeah, it happens to all of us!
Great video good to know even the pros have mistakes. Well done crew
Thanks 👍
well done David! last year i fell while rounding a mark, foot tangled in main sheet boat still sailing crew did not realize i was drowning. fortunetly boat turned upwind and crew became aware something was wrong. always get feet untangled ASAP!
For sure, it's so easy to get tangled in the ropes - keep you boat tidy at all times
Well done. I need trained crew like that!
A great investment!
Thoroughly enjoyed that one Joseph ... well done both of you!!
Many thanks!
I just found your channel the other day, and I find that it's enjoyable to watch you sail. I haven't sailed my 16 since the 80s, but I still have it.
I think I would have sailed right over you and immediately headed up to slow the boat so you could have grabbed the dolphin striker. Grabbing the lip seemed a little iffy, but all is well that ends well. Thanks for the video. 🙂
Yes, I had the option top go between the hulls or to go to the outside.
The outside is the more 'orthodox' technique as between the hulls there's more chance of being hit by the striker.
Nice job gentlemen, that was a beauty recovery.
Thanks!
Hilarious shark bait nice one David good save
🦈🤩
Nice composure David, great pickup! Ice cold.
🌶⛵️🤩
Well done!
🤩
Big pressure to tack a 16 with UA-cam watching
Yes, I think, fortunately David had forgotten about the camera on the bridles!
Good job retrieving the JOE
🤩
What a champion! Well done David!
🏅
“I seem to have abandoned ship” gave me a good laugh!
🤩
well done david! great job!
He's my hero!
That's one of my fears, going out on the wire, without the actual wire 😊
Saved nicely by David, switching from crew to single handed in a second!
Cheers!
🏅🤩
Well don, David. Great job!
I agree!
Well done David!
🤩
Fun vid. Good use of the action cams for education and entertainment.
Thanks!
Great work David 😁😁😁
I agree!
A+ David!
Exactly what I thought!
You did say it was hot! Was the splash maybe a little bit intentional? Definitely kudos to Big D for a cool headed return. Thanks for sharing.
No, not deliberate, it was pretty windy an a little bit up against it with rudders that kept coming up.
Yea I've totally jumped out on the trap without being hooked in twice. Once hung on but the other time was solo and thankfully held onto the mainsheet and capsized the boat. Had a water bag for righting. No worries
I would think that this has happened to most cat sailors at some point.
Yeah, remember nearly the sale, in a F18 race, just after tacking failing to hook me up as I got out of the boat, but I kept the main sale rope in my hand, then dragged by the boat until capsize as my crew didn't see I was out , haha.
Yes! Not letting go is a good survival instinct
Good One!
Thanks!
That was fun to watch... a little different than the usual ;) :-))
Glad you enjoyed it
Never a good feeling when that happens, came off my nacra 5.0 and it ended up on its side and drifted faster than I could swim! Panicked for the first minute, but for the next 20 minutes while I swam to shore I called myself all the idiots under the sun lol.... I usually take a personal epirb, flares, vhf radio and phone, but it was on the boat.. some of that needed to be on me somehow. I usually sail solo.
Yes, that is a bad situation.
When I went in on this occasion I had the choice to keep holding the mainsheet which would have capsized the boat but i'd have been attached. I had confidence in David's abilities so i let go to allow him to pick me up.
The suspense…
Let’s have it now shall we?
@@JoyriderTV wooh! Kept waiting for it to happen 😅Technical question: right at the beginning you release the downhaul a little bit. In strong wind, I thought you would want to pull it as tight as possible to flatten the main and depower the boat… or maybe you wanted all that power to reach the 24 knots mark?
@@martindolbec878 the one i released was the jib halyard, to allow the mast to come back a little allowing the rig to breath a bit more. The downhaul was cranked!
@@JoyriderTV oh yes that make sense. I should have payed more attention!
Great job both of you.
This brings up a question that I have wondered often. How long would it take for the boat to head into wind and then to irons if I fell off going solo? (as I most often sail solo on my 16). If you were sheeted in, would the boat just capsize? Would it a safe test with a dingy on hand? Maybe even with a long tether.
A hobie 14 that was left too close to the water made it about 300m out of shore last year when the tide came in, here in the netherlands
@@SlothOnMeth that's pretty far to swim if you had to. The rudders must have been up when that happened.
While chatting on the beach one time, the wave action loosen my 16 off the shore but I noticed it right away and ran after it (shallow shore water) to head the stead back. That wild horse was anxious to get out and run!
I think that it would make for a very interesting video - maybe coming soon!
Yes, i certainly would like to try the Super cat!
So let say you was alone on the boat when you fell off, would the boat have kept going and eventually lost it?
If I had have been alone I would have not let go of the mainsheet - I knew that David had the skills so i thought it better not to capsize the boat and instead get him to pick me up.
Falling off the boat, no mainsheet, if your main is out and jib is in then yes it would leave you.
@@JoyriderTV sry for my stupid question, but when you pull the main sheet and the jib sheet there’s like a ratchet system that keeps the sheets pulled or once you let go the sheets the boom and jib spread out?
That"s FUN!!!!
Thanks!
Cool, a profesional crew, a lot of feelings and fast movement on the hands jajjaaj maybe not much wind to a big guy crew, maybe of course
Yes, it was impressive how fast David took control.
I hope nothing bad happened to you
edit thanks god
All good - just a banged leg!
looks like somebody forgot to clip on the trapeze :-)
You could be right!
Next time maybe try hooking on to the J & H before going out 🤣
😂
I like the way you qualify yourself as a REAL man, but it just does not cut the mustard.
I'm just glad that David came back!
Great job from David. Keep in mind he had to turn around in real fresh wind.
btw .. even your Hobies mess up the rudders as soon as it gets to speedy. These nasty bitches never stay down when you need them.
Yes, David really saved my bacon!
The rudders a ok if they a regularly serviced - obviously not on this occasion!
No white shark around for a delicious snack ?
All bone a gristle!
😂😂😂😂😂
