So... eventually we did capsize! But thanks to this extraordinary tutorial, we managed to right our Hobie Tiger from a nice “180” safely, with no significant effort, and -most importantly - with no emotional stress: “EASY!” ;-)
We had studied the video carefully. On a windy day, we needed some rest and some planning before the attempt, and we did rest, and did plan, as suggested by Joseph! That was the key to success!!! Thank you Jo for this wonderful and lifesaving tutorial and for many more tutorials of yours.

I raced these things for years and here are two tips that you need to do when considering the potential for a capsize. These two tips will give you the fastest and safest recovery time.
Make the mast airtight. this will prevent the boat from doing a full inversion.
1. Remove the top mast aluminium cap.
2. Install a polypropylene foam plug (not styrene) about 1m down the mast and use plenty of sealant to hold it in place.
3. Do the same near the bottom of the mast.
You now have a sealed mast that will act as a float and prevent the boat from capsizing.
Next:
1. Rig a retractable line (on bungy cord) from the rear corners of the hulls and all the way around the front of the tramp.
2. At the centre near the dolphin striker place medium swivel pulley onthe line and attach the bungy rope to that pulley.
3. Secure the bungy cord to the rear of the trampoline.
This system means the capsize rope is pulled tight when not in use, and easily deployed when required. To rite the boat you simply stand on the rope. Ensure the boat is pointing into the wind before riteing the boat.

Fantastic again Joseph! Now you've done the best H16 righting video on the web. From a fully inverted position no less. Great pointer about getting the wind under the lee corner of the tramp when inverted. Also appreciate the advice about the rudder lock issue; I'd never heard of that before.

Great video thanks - so that explains my ride from hell in strong winds when righting my H16 - the boat took off like a demon and I could literally only hang on for dear life. Fortunately the boat was pointed to shore and ran out of wind as we got lose to land behind some shelter - finally can realize it was reverse rudder lock - have experienced it = not fun!

The righting line should be 12 or 14mm 6m long, one end tied to the central rod of the dolphin striker with a bowline.
It's a good idea to keep the righting line in one trampoline pocket and the halyards in the other.

Yeah, it's a good plan. In zero wind it takes around 125kg to bring a 16 upright.

great tutorial! good to know what to do at a 180 capsize never did this yet. theres one point u didnt mention which is really important when youre alone. it works from 4 beaufort i think:
u should stand in the front of the boat until the sail is filling up with wind and works like a wing. then when nearly the whole sail is on the surface of the water, u can go to the tow and try to lift it. normally the wind now helps u to flip it easily. my weight is about 95 kilos and it works with a dart 20. but when there is less wind i have no chance to get it up without taking down the sail. another tip wich can help is taking the tow behind the back so u simulate bit more weight

The funniest part was that even they didn’t knew how to get our Catamaran upright.

Great video, wish someone had posted this earlier as righting has always been treated as a "just do it" sort of thing.
Have any thoughts about back winding the jib by hand to help get it up right? I heard that's a technique for a solo effort but never tried it
I agree that this is probably the best righting video on the web right now. I'm over 200 pounds and always have trouble righting my Hobie 16. I also had a bad experience where it turtled over and I couldn't get it back up. The mast filled with water. I later found out that the inner plugs were gone. I'm betting that you must have replaced yours at some point because you seemed very confident that you would right it. The inverted position is my biggest nightmare to the point of holding me back from sailing too aggressively when I'm by myself. Thanks for the video
yes, making sure that your mast is sealed is essential. Water in the mast means that you'll have pretty much no chance of bringing the boat up from inverted and it will invert quicker which means more chance of being caught under the trampoline.
In your situation I would perhaps recommend a mast head float so that it is impossible for the boat to invert.
Joe. I could not right my H 14 this past week. I think the mast filled with water for sure . After the beach patrol rescued me on the jet ski and left my boat turtled, we luckily have mostly onshore breezes and the waves blew her back on the beach by the next morning . She survived the ordeal pretty well with a few broken battens and a sheered rudder pin. So ……..should I work on sealing the mast or will the Bob keep the mast afloat regardless if the mast is sealed ? You know the mast Bob does not look very manly, but I do not want to be stuck out in the Atlantic Ocean again. I am thinking of sealing the mast with the pool noodles as one of the commentators suggested . What are your thoughts please ? Thanks and good luck on the Tornado in Italy !!!!

If you ask yourself a few questions: your mast is very good. One of the things I have to do is always be checking and redoing my fence, which however good it is, always ends up getting water inside it, making it difficult to get it.
Two possible solutions. 1 - take your mast to a mast builder to be sealed professionally.
2 - fit a mast head float so that the mast can't go under the water.

Probably with powerboat assistance or by loosening the top shroud so that the top hull comes over and the weight assists the righting.
Had a adventure on friday. Turtled with Nacra 5.2 and found out that mast is leaking and on top of that stucked to the bottom of the lake. After hour of waiting for motor boat and freezing to bone spent another 30 minutes to right it up. After lifting mast to horizontal we fliped astern few times until it dawned to go on the bows when mast starts to lift. Went back to marina with telephone lite for navigation, since it was night already ant outside temp dropped to 9 deg. Sealing the mast went up my to-do list substantially.
Yes, good shout. A leaking mast is quite dangerous - especially if you're sailing without safety cover.
If your mast already has water inside it's possible that the boat can inver more quickly which could lead to an elevated risk of being caught under the trampoline.

Yes, it's generally a very good idea to recover your spinnaker before righting the boat.
hey, great video again, but i got big issues with righting up the cat, when i’m solo sailing, and i tried a lot of different ways.

Joseph Bennett Lol... I suggest avoid Turtling at all costs on a bigger boat solo Get/make a masthead float, get a bag and have a decent righting line setup. I used to PRACTICE righting my boats so it was solveable without trouble (usually). Another thought is make sure your boat does not have a "Neutral Tiller" if you fall overboard or right the boat in wind and watch your boat sail away without you

I finally got to right one of the Sea Scout's Hobies yesterday. I could see someone panicking a bit if they had no idea what to do. I felt pretty good the whole time since I had watched this video a few times and knew what to do. Thanks!
I think the more times that you go over the better as getting familiar with the righting process will make you more confident, taking the fear out of it meaning that you can enjoy the sport more in all conditions.
@@JoyriderTV Agreed. The last time had I dumped Hobie was in 1987-ish and it flat out traumatized me. It took decades for me to even consider getting on a Hobie again. This time it didn't freak me out or scare me at all. It was just an interesting and fun challenge. Looking forward to practicing this summer.
Hé Joe...got any tips or advice about getting on the boat (Nacra 20) after capsizing?
Our problem is that we have a self-tacking jib and after righting the boat - it will start sailing on the jib (even when the jibsheet is loose) :-(
I'm very familiar with this problem.
Tips:
Obviously - make sure that the jib is as loose as possible before righting.
Keep the main traveller central before righting - this will mean that the main will try to keep the boat head to wind once upright. The amount of mainsheet to have out shouldn't be all of it but it should be loose.
That is all that i've found that helps.
I have an old h16 and we flipped over once and I was wondering if the mast has to be sealed? I was thinking with a sealed mast it would be easier to flip..
It's important that the mast is sealed, once water gets in the boat becomes very difficult to bring up from inverted.
It can also be dangerous not having a sealed mast as the boat will invert more quickly which will increase the likelihood of being trapped under the trampoline.

I've sailed a dart 16 quite extensively and never seem to have a problem righting these with 2 up.
it's got to be one of the best spots anywhere for cat sailing if you like it windy and flat! With two people, as long as there's some wind most will come upright without too much of a fight.
While rghting big boats solo i always aim the masthead towards the wind to help
So stepping forward in the hull will cause it to point into the wind and therefore easier to right up? Sounds like awesome pointer. I'll try it next time.

I am a little confused on what part of the boat is supposed to be pointing into the wind.
I think this vid says to stand on the forward part of the hull to turn it into the wind. However, the Hobie website says to turn the boat so that the wind is hitting the top of the trampoline.
Should the wind be blowing across the hulls from forward to aft, or should the wind be blowing across the mast from top to bottom.

I capsized my Hobie 14 last week. Was standing forward on hull but mast doesn't move to the wind..? The down Rudder was out of the water.. Couldn't right it for 15minutes, than a friend, kitesurfer helped me with moving mast to the wind, after that it was easy..
Sometimes if you have capsized in a certain way you may have to go to the back of the hull if the front isn't working. Without seeing your exact situation it's difficult to offer more.

Hi Sonia, the technique would be the same and as you said, if you are too light to bring the boat up or if there's not enough wind a bag filled with water seems to be the best choice.
I'll be getting a righting bag for next season (this one is almost over for us here) and then i'll make the video of using the bag.

My partner and I are fairly light. How much weight do you need to right a capsized catamaran?
It depends on the amount of wind and the type of boat. In zero wind you need around 120 kg to right a hobie 16. In 25 knots of wind you need about 50 kg!
Is it possible to do this with a H16 SOLO with calm winds?

this is why a solo sailer should never sail an older heavy cat alone. they are nearly impossible to right with just one person, even if you have a bucket for extra weight. i tried to right a prindle 19 alone. i could barely budge it and i weighed 230 lbs (104 kg)
Hans Zarkov maybe try a float on the end of the mast. Just like some Hobie cats do.

It's all the same technique for righting regardless of how she goes down.
Yeah, sure, right, it’s easy to do with two full grown men. But, try to do it, single-handed, in big swells, and 20 mile an hour winds, 7 miles offshore. I did it, but it was not fun, or easy!
