- The following documentary is a commentary on Bildad Kagia's views, presented from Kagia's own perspective. Made over over 20 years ago, this rarely-seen documentary, which is in Kiswahili, is very critical of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, and shows clearly that there was no love lost between them. To start with, the two were without doubt heroes of Kenya's liberation struggle. When the colonial government moved to stamp out the independence struggle, the two were arrested, tried and jailed together in Kapenguria, then Lodwar and Lokitang. When Kenya became independent, and Kenyatta became Prime Minister and then President of Kenya, he appointed Kaggia as an assistant minister in his cabinet. Kagia's relationship with Kenyatta should be understood in the context of their ideological differences, his little appreciation of what Kenyatta had gone through in Britain for the decade he had lived there, and Kaggia’s disregard of the reality that confronts leaders when they move from opposition to government and become responsible for the fate of an entire nation. In this documentary, there are many unsubstantiated claims. Kaggia says Kenyatta had not taken the Mau Mau oath, was not a member of Mau Mau, and that he knew nothing about the armed struggle. Kaggia says he had met Kenyatta in Scotland and that Kenyatta had said he would never return to Kenya. It sounds quite like a narrative purposely created to achieve a political end - the disparagement of a sworn enemy. He says that Tom Mboya was a stooge of Jomo Kenyatta and actively participated in thwarting Kaggia and Jaramogi Oginga's plans. He says that Kenyatta tried many times to kill him through seven suspicious road accidents that failed. Kaggia says Kenyatta even sent his dreaded bodyguard Wanyoike wa Thungu to kill him but he again failed. Why a group of assassins who don't have a track record of failure, would fail so many times to kill an undefended old man, Kaggia does not explain. Truth be told, my father was a millionaire when he went to the bush as a Mau Mau but came out poor and his land given to the same people who were against the struggle for independent. Adding insult to injury, i remember him being picked out in a public baraza to be beaten because he had a different mind than those in power. I know because Kagia ate in our house, and i greeted him even though i was young. A dirty game was played. Kenyatta wasn't a Mau Mau he just used his exposure , of the outside world to corrupt the minds of Kenyans and hide behind his true thought. He used his English and oratory skills to "kill" the very people he was supposed to defend. Please give us a break we know.

This answers alot of questions about why our heroes are still suffering. The mzungu narrator should desist from trying to influence our opinion about kenyatta's handling of the land issue. I agree 100% with Kaggia. The land should have been returned to its rightful owners.
This would've been a great documentary if only you had let Kagia's voice be used instead of voiced over. Close captions would have sufficed.

Could he have been given free land to Kikuyus without repercussions? If yes, what do you think has prevented Moi, Kibaki, Uhuru and Ruto from giving free land to the children of the Mau Mau fighters?

You read Landgrabbers and Looters of Kenya by Joe Khamisi and see how we expected Hyena to condemn his clan for eating the sheep. Kibaki also grabbed land, Moi we know how he grabbed only second to Kenyatta. You can't expect Uhuru to do anything. As you are asking a baby to cut their own umbilical cord. I agree that Kenyatta made tribalism and nepotism a huge thread in the Kenyan fabric , and his dear friend, Moi, further pushed it. I was able to learn the history from people while living in Kenya back in 2022 (I was born in Trinidad 🇹🇹). Even in Nguhi wa Thiong’o’s prison memoir, on the first page is a photo copy of the order for his arrest, ordered by Jomo Kenyatta and signed by Moi. From my observations while living in Kenya, the essence of Moi is still very much alive, I noticed it everyday just in the usual politics even down to the way people go about their day and think. Nepotism is very strong in Kenya to the point that it really bothered me. I was sad to see how nepotism undermined the hard work and intelligence of Kenyans, to the point that even getting a job is very difficult (seems Kenyan companies are big on making everyone an “intern” nowadays).

Kungu Karumba is the one that died in Uganda 1974-1978, its suspected to be a business related assassination. Dont confuse kungu karumba and bildad kaggia! Kungu karumba was more of a business person and kenyatta’s confidant. Bildad Kaggia died in 2005!

@@mwangimuhammad-sx9hb from Bildad Kaggia’s account in this video, he says that Kenyatta ( through thungu wanyoike) killed kungu karumba due to some land compensation issues. However, in most historical accounts kungu karumba died in Uganda somewhere between 1974-1979. I think its upon us to make our own conclusion based on evidences provided in both accounts.

The fact that you refer Kenyatta as hero, the whole meaning of heroism lack meaning. We know him as a father of corruption, land grabbing, tribalism and all social ills our nation is suffering. I think kenyans needs to have our history rewritten to define who our true heros were.

I'm actually a historian by training and can tell you for a fact that the Jomo story was the typical template of every African "leader" chosen by the colonialists/imperialists to transition their countries into "independence." They were always sent to the Fort Hares and Londons to learn to love the white man's ways. Then "jailed" just before "independence," before being "released" as heroic martyrs to become "Fathers of the Nation." Jomo, Mugabe, Kamuzu ... we can go on and on. Mandela was the biggest one. A fraudster of fraudsters. When he got out of Robben and was given the Presidency on a silver platter, what did the black man get? Zero. They (the chosen Presidents) all had to obey neocolonial orders. And you know what happened to those who later changed their minds (on the land issue especially) and rebelled - the Lumumbas, the Mugabes and so on! #NotYetUhuru
