Matt: the non-adjustability of the headrests is actually deliberate and is a safety feature to reduce/eliminate whiplash injuries during a potential rapid deceleration. Volvo have had such headrests for 20+years or so. They never make them adjustable. I personally believe it is a good thing, and you could perhaps explain the reasoning in your future videos on Volvos. Great review also! Thanks!

Umm 3 friends I know with this vehicle have had them in service shops often and all the consumer report say they break alotttt so keep those fingers crossed 🤞🏾 😅
Another example of a very famous Volvo is the XC60. It still rocks. 2018 world car of the year. And the XC90 also. This design of new Volvos are aging just fine like old fine wine. 😃
I had one of these last year as a replacement for our 2019 Cayenne S while it was being repaired and my initial impression was it was really good, great interior, fast but also really good midrange performance (compared to the Cayenne) but I hated the lane assist. Turned it off but it still kept vibrating the steering wheel. Biggest problem was though it kept throwing a drive train error and failed to start on numerous occasions even though it had only done 60 miles. Don’t like hybrids, they have all the complication of a ice and ev combined.
The problem with Volvo is that they’re punching well above their weight limit. Compared to other mid-level brands they’re good car, yet pricey. In the premium levels, they just don’t bring it in terms of quality, performance, reliability and character.
Have an original D5 200 bhp from 2011. 174,000 miles on it now. Heated electrically adjustable leather seats, dual zone climate control, Bluetooth, cruise, 7 seats. Absolutely everything works, and I would (and often do) jump in it and drive 200 miles without so much as a moment of worry or discomfort. Tows 1300kg occasionally as well without breaking a sweat. Keep on top of maintenance and Volvos will run forever. I hope this new stuff is as well engineered.
We now own the 2nd Volvo XC90 II and after nearly 8 years it's still one out of the best looking suv's out there. Sure the screen could and should have been upgraded already, but other than that its a pure beauty.
Our XC90 is a brilliant car. Absolutely love it. Hugely reliable and the hybrid is good (albeit not enough miles on our model - 30). The drive mode thing is genuinely terrible though and the interface feels old now. We're a bit unsure if we want to keep it or downgrade to a smaller car or not, albeit it's just so massive and really useful. If you run it on electric-mode a lot then its great for efficiency. We've seen mid-50's, but a lot lower in winter. And actually it's quite fast, faster than you should really drive it because it's still a bit of a boat 😂 We also deliberately specified it with smaller wheels/taller sidewalls and it makes the ride better and hugely protects the alloys
Matt, the reason the headrests are not adjustable is to prevent people adjusting them for comfort, rather than safety. After all, no recorded fatalities in a XC90 since records began.

Off the top of my head they have changed: extended range on t8s, redesigned chrome inlays for front, new alloy options, new radar and camera system, Google infotainment, wool interior, wireless charger, new panoramic roof switches, new interior inlays of wood, removing and hiding of exhaust tips, addition/replacements of 12v with usb c, changed interior lights to capacitive.
I’ve got the B5D & get nearly 50mpg on the motorway & about 30mpg in town , it also gets roughly 30 mpg towing my caravan. Surprisingly the 4 cylinder is more than adequate.
@@deansmits006 yes & no , on a rubbish road surface the ride isn’t the best (I don’t have air) but on normal to decent the ride is what you would expect on a car of this price.
One of the reasons we recline the 2nd row seats also is because we want to carry a whole adult size casket🙊, it's a nice SUV though. I like the fabric on the seats, Volvo took a different turn on this one.
I bought a T8 plug in hybrid to replace my Q7 Audi. Why did I change? Due to semiconductor shortages I couldn't get a Q7 with what was on my original car and it had only a 21 miles electric range. I got no discount on the T8 including carwow but a reasonable deal on my trade in. Corrections are this I have never got 40miles on electric. I get 30-33 . After fully charging it never says the range is higher than 33. My car is the latest 2023 car. I do a lot of short journeys so it suits me . However you dont save much money in reality while electric prices are high. The second correction is I bought the XC90 because I needed a big boot in 5 seat mode as my Q7 was good also. My wife is disabled so have to carry a wheel chair and buggy. Its stated in the vid that the Discovery boot is much bigger. Dont kid yourself. Its actually smaller . I took a tape measure. Land Rover measure their boots differently. I was told measure to the roof. Volvo to the window line. This is the reason I did not have an X5 . The boot is just too small. Good points, boot capacity, quiet, great poke when accelerating hard, well made and a handsome car. Bad points. Touch screen is a danger. Why do I have to press the screen five times to switch the heated seats off. You can use voice control of course but you do feel a wally and it doesnt always work. Sun visors are a bit deep and you hit your head on them if your not careful and finally doors do not cover the door sill so trousers and skirts get dirty exiting the car unlike the Q7. saying that I am pleased with my T8. Not going all electric as we holiday in Devon. That means next to no chargers. I have now done 2000 miles and very happy with it , Fuel consumption when battery depleted is 30-33 mpg which isnt bad considering the weight of the batteries. However its all electric range was what I wanted . Just an edit 10 months later . The car has run fault free and massage function of the seats is entertaining. Dont believe fuel consumption figures on the dash as you can get that reading 1000mpg. I agree with Matt on the air suspension. Even though it has air suspension It does crash on potholes which never happens in a Q7 with air suspension. You must use the electric as much as possible to make the economy good but dont charge at public chargers . More expensive than running on petrol. Its full of safety stuff and the blind spot lights in the wing mirrors is a great help but the car slamming the breaks on when a car passes when parking the car is not fun and perhaps I can find a way of turning it off. Would I buy another? Yes I would . Its an excellent car and knocks any Land rover product out of court on usable boot size for me anyway. Defender, Discovery , Range Rover Sport get the tape measure out. The Q7 is the better car now so I will go back to that most probably but that decision may change in three years time. I wont be going all electric. Another quick edit in July 2024 is a software update that now gives me between 40 and 44 miles on electric only which is a nice surprise.
On my third XC90 mark 2 - we had a diesel one and two T8s. It’s very difficult to find much better even after 8 years in production. For reference fuel economy on a long run in a T8 is typically 35-40mpg (I did a 200 mile run yesterday with an average of 37) so it’s not quite as bad as you think. If you push on that will plummet - 18mpg when thrashed across country (but it is fun)
I tested a few 7 seaters with the intention of buying one a few years ago - Q7, X5, Discovery, Range Rover and XC90 Hybrid. The XC90 impressed me the most. I had low expectations but was blown away. Turns out I couldn’t afford any of the vehicles brand new at that time and had to settle for a secondhand Q7 🤷🏾♂️ Nice car but XC90 is the one. If you know, you know.
@@williamhickerson7673 I loved everything about the Q7 - it was the best car I’d owned at that time - I actually miss it at times. It had DVD players in the head rests which kept the kids quiet. A good blend of comfort and power. Fuel economy wasn’t great and the cost of maintenance/tyres/servicing/insurance was a shock - but I enjoyed it while I had it.
Matt never disappoints! I love the honest reviews and especially the things you love and hate about a car. I hope everyone is listening and making changes b/c that changed my mind.
I have a 2019 XC60 and honest the infotainment in it is nicer than the current models, I've had loan cars while getting it serviced and much prefer getting back into the older model. Having a physical gate on the gearshift rather than just up or down, being able to change drive modes off a physical switch just easier. Even stuff like aircon, turning off stop/start etc is just faster/more intuitive.
Pro tip: If you had a knee surgery and you are over 2 meters tall and your not allowed to bend your knee so you cant get in any seats. You can fold the 2nd row away so you can sit in the 3rd row and strech out your legs on to the back of the folded 2nd row. (saved me a lot of time)
As a former Volvo owner I am still drawn to the product out of intrigue for the newer models. I drove 740 GLE Wagon for 26 years, v-240 for 4 months, XC-90 for three years. Sadly after it had 2 new engines for it in less than 18 months due to a known (little disclosed oil pan filter issue) I chose not to drive it off the dealers again due to the lack of confidence in it. I still like this XC-90, and the XC-60. How ever I drive a 2012 Ford Escape, low mileage. Purchased in 2017, I have only had to replace tires and change the oil. The draw of these new models has appeal but I have more sense than money these days so I'll drive the Ford to the grave like I did my 86 740-GLE Wagon.
Wow, didn’t realize that Volvo very disingenuously removed the beautifully crafted click-roller drive select button that was near the start stop button and unsafely moved it to the touch screen. How stupid of Volvo !
We’ve owned 2 Range Rover Autobiography, 1 MB GL63 AMG, 1 Audi Q7, 6 BMWs, 3 XC90s (2006 V8, 2016, 2019) and now have a 2021 S90 R-Design, a 2015 911 4S and a 2021 Lexus LX570… the Volvos are great (cheaper, more reliable) alternatives to all but the Lexus, IMHO
Its good for people who want something subtle or maybe for older people, but honestly for the same price you can get an x5 which looks better inside and out and it has multiple powertrains for whatever someone is looking for.
My wife has a 2021 T8. Loves the way it looks and feels. Safety is top notch. Personally, I've grown to really hate the drive train for 2 reasons 1)The engine is only fast in "Power mode". All other modes feel like snail mode, and to make it worst, when the gear change finally happens you hear the 4-cylinder rev up which let's just say doesn't sound very luxurious, elegant, or exciting. The engine just sounds feeble compared to a 6 or 8 cylinder but it is peppy, in certain situations 2)The hybrid drive drain is not well done. The 19mile range is too low for American driving. You have to charge it almost twic ea day to try to stay on electric. What's worst, the default hybrid management is terribel and will jump to engine power too soon with even a slightly aggressive pedal push, and on top of that, it's stupid as hell and will try to jump to electric only even when you're going 75mph on the highway, which would end up draining the battery faster than you can say MISSISSIPPI 5 TIMES. Furthermore, as Matt pointed out, I wish there was a button on the steerring wheel to activiate/deactivate the electric drive only mode, but alas you have to go through 2-3 distracting touchscreen menu buttons to change that feature so you really can't practically, manually control the electric to ICE transition during daily driving.
Sounds like you have an old enough T8 to have the worse battery (lower range), but new enough to have no driving mode selector (and maybe dodgy Google integration UI) - bad choice. Newest ones have dodgy ICE/UI but way more power and range, so are worth buying, but dear. Older ones (if you get lucky with a good one) have better UI/UX and drive mode selector - but range similar to yours (sufficient for UK). If the range isn't enough for your needs - it's a bad choice of car for you, sorry.
I think Volvo XC90 is still a nice premium suv to travel long distances. Safe, comfortable, elegant. It aged fine. Like good wine. My preference in this segment is : 1st place. Porsche Cayenne because i like a suv with a more sporty feeling into it. 2nd place. BMW X5 3rd place. Volvo XC90 T8 455 hp with top level equipment. more discreet and refined. 4th place. Mercedes GLE. Very good suv but it is a little bit too show off with all those lights inside... looks like a discotheque. Not my style. 5th place. Audi Q7
I’ve had an XC90 V8 (2009) and T8 (2016). They’re just fantastic, elegantly designed, and bulletproof for safety and reliability. Saving up for an EX90…
The XC90 should not be compared with the X5; They are not in the same category. The X7 is the ideal competitor for the XC90. The BMW, MB, and Audi competitors cannot go 40 miles on electric only. With all those features, over 40 miles of electric range, and for this price, the XC90 is the best deal in this category (in my opinion). I’ll replace my buggy 2019 Subaru Ascent with this Volvo. Thank you for the review!
had one for 4 years and not one issue and first 3 years Volvo took care of maintenance and one negotiated for the 4th year too. So not a penny spent driving about 45K miles.
Yeah, the fact that it's about 8 years old, barely refreshed, it seems that they are likely going to try and make the EX90 readily available and sell quite a lot. Not just a compliance car. So hopefully that means it being well thought out
It used to be a "standard" feature back in the days, where either there's a dedicated alarm button on the key fob, or pressing the car lock button twice will trigger the alarm of the vehicle. But recently a lot of key fobs lack that feature.
If you own a 2023 XC90 and have the Volvo cars app it will give you the vehicle location on Google maps (might also work with earlier versions, but I don't know for sure).
You Missed out one interesting point on the rear power socket, it continues to have power supply even when the car is not running or when engine is off and the car is locked. unlike most cars where you have to turn the key to acc to get power. Another feature which they should have maintained and Included in their current and future production is the car Child Booster seat in the Centre of the middle roll. C. Mataruka: Harare-Zimbabwe
I have 2 ‘grail’ pens - a Visconti HS Dark Age, and a MB 146 ‘Around the World in 80 days’ in blue resin. Both have done short haul and long haul flights and had no real issues. I do wonder if the air pressure was the cause, my Parker duofold hesitates after flights and I remove the cartridge for a minute and replace it. Seems to allow the pen to ‘burp’ and work flawlessly afterwards.
My parents had a 2011 T6 with the twin turbo inline 6 motor that was just glorious to drive and sit in. I remember my father test driving the optional 4.4 V8 motor but after I drove it as well we both agreed the turbo motor was absolutely the way to go (a car must have a very special V8 motor for me to say no to a turbo engine) so that was that lol
I owned this car for more than 3 years. Wonderful piece of engineering. The only annoying about it just the sound of the indicator. Sometimes it skip a beat.
The XC40 is the same. Sometimes it doesn’t come on at all and sometimes it stops mid signalling. I’ve nearly snapped the stalk many-a-time putting it ‘back on’. Took it back twice and incredibly it was fine for the workshop. 👎
It does that deliberately so you're less likely to accidently leave the indicator on. You may not notice a consistent beep, but the off beat means it catches your attention. Almost every detail is thought through to be safer.
I currently have my Volvo XC90 in the Denver Volvo dealership, where I was quoted $7,500 for the out of warranty replacement of the ERAD (electronic motor and transmission). I tried to get in touch with Volvo about this issue and have not hear back from them on twitter!
I can't wait to see CarWow's review on the XC90 full EV. Hope Volvo does the same with the XC60. The XC 40 full EV is doing pretty good so far in sales, reviews, performance and quality.
I drove one at the Australian launch of the Discovery in 2016. We had every competitor car there for comparison and the Volvo was an absolute standout, and even then was the cheapest of all on the drive.
How come you are only now noticing Volvos classic static headests? I have them in my V50 ´06 and we also had V40´ in family which had them. Their ergonomy must have been nailed down well dating all the way back to 90s, i never experienced anyone having issue with them ;)
Fantastic car and what a great and fair review (aside from the absence of 0-100 km/h test 🏁). Thanks Mat & Carwow: this is exactly what the XC90 is. We have the 2017 T8 version, same specs: best car ever purchased. We added wireless Carplay and wireless charging with 2 adapters (factory look) and we still have the physical button for drive mode 😉 I am so happy Volvo kept the shape and did not make changes. It is a solid car that we use 90% in EV mode and it yield 2 litres/100km average since ownership. I can’t believe in 2023 it is still the same car, but so happy, such and beautiful, solid and timeless design. The seats are so comfortable and audio performance so amazing. The gap between the 2nd and 3rd row on van mode is because the 2nd row was not all the way back (as you mentioned they are adjustable).
Its not same spec actually. This version has the upgraded battery and eletric engine. 50-60% more range and the power output went from 92hp to 140hp on the eletric motor and twice the torque. I know since I have both and it makes a big difference on daily drive. But either is great nontheless.
@@farmacianova3509 Absolutely. Thanks for pointing that out. I meant same overall specs as in trim level (Inscription 2). I would love to have the latest model just for the One pedal driving option which I believe is present.
Yes. Good powerful car. A lot of torque. If you want more power, you can install the Polestar Engineered optimisation. But the best part of getting the Diesel is its consumption. Good values for a +2 tonne seven seat SUV.
Although I also like the drive mode switching wheel in the previous generations, and the selection in a sub menu of a sub menu is a really bad design decision, I wonder how many people actually change the drive mode _while driving_? I've never done that once in any of my Volvos... I change before I start and that's it... 🤷♂
I change it every 5 to 10 mins around town (with T8 Polestar), it depends how nerdy you are and whether you want to constantly optimise performance and efficiency/economy, which I quite enjoy doing. On a long trip - Individual wins.
Curious to know why you’d prefer the wool seats over leather. I like the idea of wool being warm on a cold day but wonder if it’s less practical than black leather in terms of general grubbiness?
If the diesel has good towing capabilities, but the electric engine turns off to just use diesel power, I'd buy one, & I'm not a fan of Hyrbids. I'd use the combination to stroll or go out in city or short trips, but the diesel combustion for trips or towing sounds awesome for the luxury it has.
was waiting for your review last year but i just went right ahead and bought one in July. and i LOVE it! after 7000km driven average is 5.3l(44mpg) which is damn nice. and that 455 hp that takes almost 3t wheicle to 100km/h in ~5 seconds is mind blowing. X5 steering requires a lot of attention at highway speeds to keep it in it's lane and bigger without the interior volume so it seems.... I'll probably get another XC90 after this lease is up next year....if they change as I mentioned I'll probably purchase it instead of lease.... why.... reliability is pretty darn good too....
Hard to say, but if you compare it against the BMW X5 45e, the Volvo is more efficient in general. 26 vs 20mpg in hybrid mode. Real world conditions apply, the usual caveat. However, Volvo did the 4 cylinder only option to make it cheaper to develop drivetrains. One basic powerplant, with a supercharged option, and hybrid option. No 6 or 8 cylinder to develop. Cheaper
Outside of the Range Rover products, this is the best looking large SUV on sale. However it is really showing it’s age in other areas such as the infotainment and refinement. I drive a Q7 usually but had a 2022 XC90 for the day recently and it just felt old in comparison even though they are essentially the same age, Audi has done a better job with the refreshes than Volvo. The electric range in the hybrid is tiny in the real world and it is slow to charge. Seems that Volvo were ahead of the game with the 4 cyl engines though as others are now following suit, still prefer a 6 cyl for as long as they are available though. Shame that the price of the all electric version is going to put it completely out of reach.

Sold our XC90 2005 a year 1/2 ago. Had some crazy tech in it for the time, had some “fun times” in van mode 😏
Really really miss it
Another example of a very famous Volvo is the XC60. It still rocks. 2018 world car of the year.
And the XC90 also. This design of new Volvos are aging just fine like old fine wine. 😃
Simple high-end to present what it is like in Scandinavia. Love it!

Worst seat ever for kids.

And actually it's quite fast, faster than you should really drive it because it's still a bit of a boat 😂
We also deliberately specified it with smaller wheels/taller sidewalls and it makes the ride better and hugely protects the alloys

Matt, the reason the headrests are not adjustable is to prevent people adjusting them for comfort, rather than safety.
After all, no recorded fatalities in a XC90 since records began.
Except ua-cam.com/video/forKDgmvnfo/v-deo.html
The issue with that is that depending on height it might not suit you for safety

Do you get the same issue regarding a bit flinty ride? Lots of reviews discuss it
@@deansmits006 yes & no , on a rubbish road surface the ride isn’t the best (I don’t have air) but on normal to decent the ride is what you would expect on a car of this price.
Because it’s twin charged lol

How slow are you driving on a motorway to get 50mpg? I just about scrape 30mpg. The official figure is 40mpg.
One of the reasons we recline the 2nd row seats also is because we want to carry a whole adult size casket🙊, it's a nice SUV though. I like the fabric on the seats, Volvo took a different turn on this one.
It's cheaper for the company than using leather
Would you recommend the diesel version? What’s the real world mpg like? Cheers
@@Himoutdoors The Diesel is pretty good - smooth and quiet and has more go than you might expect. We got mid 30’s MPG most of the time.
What are some things you didnt like about the Q7? That made you choose the Volvo?
(saved me a lot of time)
Noted. Thank you.
Why didn't you check it of acceleration 0-60 and brakes?
It's quick enough, stops well enough. I'm sure it's not the best, but ok for it's purposes
An honest test and very modern Volvo. Even 15 years ago I didn't have turn signals in the outside mirrors😅
I love that car. My parents are driving this. I have driven this car and its amazing
Personally, I've grown to really hate the drive train for 2 reasons
1)The engine is only fast in "Power mode". All other modes feel like snail mode, and to make it worst, when the gear change finally happens you hear the 4-cylinder rev up which let's just say doesn't sound very luxurious, elegant, or exciting. The engine just sounds feeble compared to a 6 or 8 cylinder but it is peppy, in certain situations
2)The hybrid drive drain is not well done.
My preference in this segment is :
1st place. Porsche Cayenne because i like a suv with a more sporty feeling into it.
2nd place. BMW X5
3rd place. Volvo XC90 T8 455 hp with top level equipment. more discreet and refined.
4th place. Mercedes GLE. Very good suv but it is a little bit too show off with all those lights inside... looks like a discotheque. Not my style.
5th place. Audi Q7
I think only the Q7 in that list still have 7 seats.

I'm way more excited for the EX90. That's where they have spend all their time and attention.
Yeah, the fact that it's about 8 years old, barely refreshed, it seems that they are likely going to try and make the EX90 readily available and sell quite a lot. Not just a compliance car. So hopefully that means it being well thought out
I have had two XC90 T8s. Now drive a 2023 XC90 T8 Recharge Ultimate and for me is the complete car.
When discussing the 5 good things Matt said the remote can help you locate the car via the panic button. Isn’t that pretty standard on most vehicles?
Not really... Many cars still don't have it nowadays.

The XC40 is the same.
Sometimes it doesn’t come on at all and sometimes it stops mid signalling.
I’ve nearly snapped the stalk many-a-time putting it ‘back on’.

The XC90 VOLVO has 279kph top speed and a 0 to 60mph in 3.95 seconds.
Its not same spec actually. This version has the upgraded battery and eletric engine. 50-60% more range and the power output went from 92hp to 140hp on the eletric motor and twice the torque. I know since I have both and it makes a big difference on daily drive. But either is great nontheless.

I love the Volvos, growing up we’ve always had Volvos as well. Only thing I can’t understand is why they removed the drive mode knob

Would probably be more efficient with a straight 6
Hard to say, but if you compare it against the BMW X5 45e, the Volvo is more efficient in general. 26 vs 20mpg in hybrid mode. Real world conditions apply, the usual caveat. However, Volvo did the 4 cylinder only option to make it cheaper to develop drivetrains. One basic powerplant, with a supercharged option, and hybrid option. No 6 or 8 cylinder to develop. Cheaper

The new Volvo XC90 have luxurious and cool looking design!
Looks nice with one exception, the seats.
I'm allergic to wool.

The Market has been pretty bad until today it decided to surge. Everybody was Practically Crying then. It kept dipping. That's what you get when you feel you can navigate the process on your own. Big thank to Alexis caballero. I'm not bothered with how bad the Market is because my assests are insured due to her advice and I still receive my profits
Hello fellow humans. It is me: also a human and not a robot impersonating a human
At 3:08 as Volvo told us, it does not shut is not wearing out the cable if you are charging the phone and you are using your phone on the go
So if you attach the cable and close the lid the cable gets stuck and it damages the cable
In 2015 looked nice but For some reason now in 2023 isn’t a compelling choice at this price.
Unless you are a Volvo fan
Can we all agree this is the best aging 3-row vehicle on sale? Hell maybe even ones that have gone extinct
