Man I’ve been following Bill Burr since the early 2000s and thought I had seen everything, but I also haven’t seen that clip of him talking about his dad. That’s such a HUGE contrast compared to his usual energy. This was an awesome video man, solid coverage and timeline 🤌🏼

Been a hard core Bill Burr fan for decades-he remains my favorite comic-and I enjoy Nia as well. His podcast is pure gold. Many of us have grown up with bully parents so we sure get how humiliating that doll at Christmas must have felt and actually was-that’s *not funny.* *How friggin’ cruel can ya be to a child?* We’ve been there with the parent who never misses an opportunity to humiliate us, let us know we’re nothing to them or anyone else, always a failure, never enough or good enough. Their sadistic smirks after shredding our child (and later adult) hearts just destroys our sense of competence and confidence. Thank you for this compilation, much appreciated!
Wow man, the old footage of Bill Burr actually sharing some really hard emotions, I felt so bad like I was watching a therapy or group session tapes, I never saw this side of him before. Now it seems he doesn't share anything more than he has decided. Great work
JasonS. I agree. I've never seen this side of Bill Burr. It makes me feel really bad about what he went through. A person's father can really affect their lives- for the rest of their lives.
I agree. It's incredible to see that footage and the raw emotion that was the clay he used to sculpt the amazing routines he ended up creating. He also used so many of these stories in this show, F is for family.
I've heard Bill tell the story about the doll before and it was messed up but he got the laughs. Seeing that other clip of him telling it shows how it is a very hard memory for him. I've never seen Bill get so emotional on stage, and it does give more perspective on him.
The doll story touched my heart. It made me remember the worst thing my parents ever did to me. At a family reunion, in the late evening, all the kids from different families were tucked in all over the house. Parents were laughing about the big softball game that day. I heard my Mom laugh about how I had struck out in softball. My Dad laughed outside, and they started talking about how uncoordinated you have to be to miss a softball. I listened to this go on for 20 minutes. It was more than forty years later that I told that for the first time. My wife said- Ive seen the pictures and your mom was still laughing. Then, my wife said, Hey- He has a huge cast on his arm! Maybe swinging bat one handed is hard. Wife says my Mom was silent, then left the room.
Hearing Bill say he realized when the other kids were looking at him that there is something wrong with his family just took all the heavy weight I feel about my abusive messed up family Thank you Bill you just saved me from spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars on therapy thank you Bill ❤you brother

I saw Bill Butt in Nashville last year. After the show my wife and I went back to the hotel. Just before 2am we stepped out for a cigarette before bed. Just as we finished Bill and his wife rolled up to the hotel. Bill couldn’t figure out how to get the front door to the lobby open. A bit star struck we followed them in. We ended up on the elevator with them. It was just the 4 of us. It was funny seeing Bill try to figure out how to get the elevator to work. We helped him out. Rode up to the same floor. They were super nice like regular people. I couldn’t believe what just happened.

Patrice O'Neal is by far more ruthless. Bill is one of his creations. Busting his balls constantly and I am quoting Bill when he said out of 10000 arguements he one won once.
As I’ve come to see very clearly…you’re only this funny-this ruthless, sometimes-after enduring extreme pain. It’s a common theme. I do love this type of comedy!! Been a Bill Burr fan for years. Nice! I thought this was just going to be a highlight compilation but it’s actually worth watching even for a die hard Bill Burr fan. You dug and you dug well :)
@@TheComedyHistorian I DID! And it’s not some cheap way of getting a whole bunch of views. There’s actual depth and substance. Might have said that the first time but thanks for heart. Thought: Most Ruthless? There’s no Ruthlessest is there ah okay
You might not read this, but I want you to know you did a phenomenal job with this. I thought I knew everything about Him but you opened my eyesc to things I had no idea about. This was great!
Bill Burr is one of my all time favorites. However, my vote goes to Norm Macdonald as the most ruthless. Norm was fearlessly hilarious. He just didn't care. Norm told jokes he liked. He got the biggest kick out of telling a story and if you laughed, fine, if you didn't that was Ok too. Norm was a genius at Stand-up.
You can be sure Bill Burr's dad was way worse than he's letting on in these clips. You don't get that traumatized over a guy who just yells a lot and calls people mean names.
I’ve enjoyed Bill over the years, but as a man born 1-1/2 years before him, he needs to know there are millions of us ‘latch key kids’ from that era that feel exactly the same. We had Dad’s as strict as his, or worse! My Dad’s now 83 and we get along great, I’m thankful I got my Dad so long so I could clear the air and have closer. Bill, all business aside, you’re not alone in that deep, Dad hating feeling. Wondering what we did for our Dads to hate us so much that they’d make our lives so miserable. It sucked, bad!, but with help we can definitely learn how to deal with it. I hope and pray you were able to get some kind of closer, otherwise you can end up drinking with ulcers like I did.
14:25 - Wow, I’ve been a huge fan of Bill from his first shows, it’s been at least 30+ years. But I’ve never seen that first clip you showed and you’re right, it’s kind of amazing to see that vulnerability in him, he sure hasn’t shown that since! Great video man, you honoured him really well! 🤠👍🏼☮️
Another great documentary. Thank you, Nate! Like too many comedians, Bill Burr is a tortured soul, trying to figure stuff out. People trying to figure stuff out contribute the most to life.
Thank you for this video (even though the flickering did my head in), I didn't discover Burr until about 5 years ago or so after he did F is For Family. I love the footage about him talking about his dad and the snow, I'd never seen that special, it's pretty heart-rendering stuff. Thanks man.
"Bad Dads" is so awesome. It not only makes you laugh out loud, but also pictures a serious reflection of more and more people living a similar situation !!!
The "Philly Rant" was, I believe, the first time in comedy history that a comedian turned the tables on almost getting booed off stage. I don't think anyone else has done it
Bill can make a serious , traumatic , hurtful event, seem unserious, untramatic , unhurtful , funny experience and pushing the listener into well being faster than the non- listener
OMG, how did you find those old videos that I've never ever seen!!! Felt weird and heartwarming seeing Bill emotional like that! Keep up the amasing work man!!!

The priest-in-training alter boy talking at the end of the video really added a level of homoeroticism that was needed to balance out a video about Everyman Bill Burr. Well done.
I see Comedians as people who tell the truth and they have the most natural way a Human being would interact and we laugh as a way of agreeing with them
Was in LA. Burbank. Staying in a mid-level hotel. two stories with a pool in the middle and rooms leading out onto balconies. Early in the morning, I hear what sounds like a couple arguing in one of the rooms. I roll over and try to go back to sleep. Again almost the same dialogue. The couples fighting in the room next-door. Try to go back to sleep. Again, same exact words being used by the couple arguing in the room next-door. I stepped out of the door and what was an empty courtyard when I went to sleep, is now full of tons of moviemaking equipment, and somebody stops me in the hall and says wait. So I wait. And hear the same words that I was hearing in my room. I ask what’s going on? And the assistant says we’re making a movie. I ask who is in it? She says Bill Burr. We were on the second floor overlooking the pool, and I look to where the cameras are and sure enough…There is Bill Burr running the same scene over and over… must’ve done that one SCENE a dozen times. Come to find out he wrote, directed and produced and starred in the movie. A fun experience .
Bill, if you read this, understand your dad knew you were going to be much more successful. Dad's know, trust me. That's why they try to destroy your destiny. In mythology, it's the same reason Saturn ate his children.
I was listening mostly to this video while working on something, and enjoyed it tremendously; towards the end I quit what I was doing to watch the last 20 minutes or so, and it wasn't until it was over that I saw just how young Nate is! I gotta say, he did an excellent job on this whole thing, incredibly detailed, thorough, and obviously from a place of admiration, plus he was eloquent, professional, and obviously spared no effort, covering a great deal; I thought I had seem pretty much most of Ol' Red Balls' routines, but I was surprised to hear excerpts from several I hadn't, which I'm gonna look up as soon as I"m done with this comment, hitting like, and subscribe! Good word, sir, this is what a HUGE part of youtube is for, as far as I"m concerned, along with things like Bill Burr's excellent stand up specials! The only other time I've ever laughed as hard as I have with Bill was way back when Calvin & Hobbes came out of nowhere and reminded us all of what really incredible comic strip humor could do... Huh, another Bill, Watterson, that is, creator of C & H...
Hey man, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you so much for watching the video to the end. I appreciate your kind words man, I’ve got plenty more content where that came from that I think you’d enjoy! Thanks again, I hope to see more comments from you soon sir ❤️
@ 16:53. Thank you for squeezing that reference to the Norm MacDonald joke about Bill Cosby in your video. I really miss Norm and that reference, any reference really, reminds me how privileged I am to have been able to watch and listen to that old chunk of coal.
Someone uploaded every episode bill was on Opie and Anthony and it’s well worth a listen. He would often fill in for lil Jimmy Norton and would always just crush it.. if you haven’t listened it’s well worth it
This is very well done. Remonds me of john leguiezmo's act called Freak. It's stunning hilarious and creative, but hut he gives these moments of reality and how his father was to him and his brother and mother. And right back to a deep laugh. It's quite a ride but revealing and brave and fantastic. For you to make a doc thst feels similar to that vibe, it's a form of crafting. So kudos for sure.
Thanks for the kind words Josh! I have new documentary on Robin Williams coming out tomorrow, I’d love to see you comment on that one with your thoughts ❤️
Bill Burr is Superman of comedians. He was on the Dave Chappelle show when he was starting out you know he was a comedian already but there’s a part in one of the Chapelle show stories are doing a beer advertisement and they Chapelle‘s dress up like a pirate or something screaming in field birds face it was and Bill Burr was so professional he didn’t he didn’t take out laughing. He smoked a little bit, but it was amazing how professionally was and it was this. It is incredible everything I see him and even he’s a great actor I can watch him to the day I die I hope he stays with it because we’re about the same age. I don’t know how old he is now I got a look him up but I’m 60 and I really love you’re doing this I’m ranting and raving on there I sound like Bill Burr, but I’m not funny like him
Billy Beer Nuts with Conan , talking about "the biggest loser" had me F'n DYING . I'm going to watch it after this 😅 I love how you have John Bonham / Zeppelin playing for the breaks
I find it depressingly ironic that what has been learned the hard way, repeatedly, is on full display in this video. People falling into the trap of wanting their feelings validated. His dad was teaching him a lesson, the world doesn't care about your feelings, it cares about what you can do for them and if you get to far out ahead, they will think you somehow must have cheated and/or are "greedy. It has served him very well. He mentions it in many of his routines, society doesn't care what hardships men go through. It is so true that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I don't blame people today because the generations of the 60's bought into it and passed it down.
Not too many people you can like warts and all. He created opportunities for himself, and then didn’t shy away from working them through. That is success.

@@TheComedyHistorian I DID! And it’s not some cheap way of getting a whole bunch of views. There’s actual depth and substance.
Might have said that the first time but thanks for heart.
Thought: Most Ruthless? There’s no Ruthlessest is there ah okay
41:56 I get excited when I know an ad read is coming. His reads are some of the best , if not the best.
Zip Recruiter should give him an Award!
We need him to do a ManGrate ad like Norm Macdonald did lol
You might not read this, but I want you to know you did a phenomenal job with this. I thought I knew everything about Him but you opened my eyesc to things I had no idea about. This was great!
Thank you for the kind words Brian. Hope to see you comment on more videos in the future ❤️
Awesome documentary bro! Bill and Ricky Gervais are the two best still alive in my opinion. Looking forward to more good stuff!
Norm was a genius at Stand-up.
seriously. he criticized hilary clinton for years and lived to tell the tale…
…wait a minute….
Yes, Bil Burr. The best comedian on my life time. No apologies ever
I can almost hear Patrice's "URRRGH" groan at this video title! 👏🤣 Props to you, Nate. This is one *incredible* analysis! 🔥🙏
Hahaha I figured he’d roast me for it and I’d happily take it right on the chin and laugh my ass off. Glad you loved the video brother ❤️
Hey, that was some really good work, with some new insights, a really good watch! Thanks for the effort!
Glad you loved the video man. I hope you subscribe to see more future content coming soon ❤️
You can be sure Bill Burr's dad was way worse than he's letting on in these clips. You don't get that traumatized over a guy who just yells a lot and calls people mean names.
A 100%
His dad was a dentist and they're notoriously miserable and angry people
Bill Burr is the ONLY comic that keeps me laughing EVERY TIME I hear or see him.
Old Dads was very funny and is definitely worth watching.
It's garbage
The "Philly Rant" was, I believe, the first time in comedy history that a comedian turned the tables on almost getting booed off stage. I don't think anyone else has done it
Stewart Lee has done similar, ending the rant with “crowds like you as good as murdered robin williams”.
Which is just beautifully brutal.
yeah it is lol
Bill can make a serious , traumatic , hurtful event, seem unserious, untramatic , unhurtful , funny experience and pushing the listener into well being faster than the non- listener
Yes…A master class in true therapy….Crew, swallow, digest and shit out….Next case.
Trauma just heals by telling and telling it over and over again. And he is being paid for I admire this about him.
I love how every curse in that one rant is censored but then out of nowhere is the word “twat” lol
Lol what UA-cam deems as “harsh language” makes no sense to me.
Big up to Nate for this shit! Bill being top 5 imo, I’ve been waiting for someone to do a well executed doc.. this is it & surpassed expectations.
Thank you so much for the kind words bro, I hope you share with friends man. Let’s build this channel up ❤️
OMG, how did you find those old videos that I've never ever seen!!!
Felt weird and heartwarming seeing Bill emotional like that!
Keep up the amasing work man!!!
Thanks a lot man! I’m glad you enjoyed the content, I hope you subscribe to see more future content ❤️
I rarely subscribe to channels with this account (my reaction channel) but I didn't hesitate with your channel! I will for sure support you as a fellow "Billy Freckled Balls" fan!! ❤😂@@TheComedyHistorian
Loving your channel!
Thank you so much 🙏
Thanks for watching my friend! This is one of my favorite videos I’ve made, I hope you watch the whole thing and tell me your favorite part 🙏
@@TheComedyHistorian ❤️
Thank you again so much!!
Amazing work brother. Really intriguing dialogue
Glad you enjoyed it man
The priest-in-training alter boy talking at the end of the video really added a level of homoeroticism that was needed to balance out a video about Everyman Bill Burr. Well done.
Excellent comment 🤣😂🤣
I see Comedians as people who tell the truth and they have the most natural way a Human being would interact and we laugh as a way of agreeing with them
Mike birbiglia is the guy that got booed of stage for the Philly rant
Where did you find that info?
I thought it was Jimmy Shubert. How’d you find that out?
@@TheComedyHistorian look up mike birbiglia vs rich voss
There’s a back in forth about the topic for the first 10 mins
Bill actually refers to Dom Irrera during the rant. He might not have been the first comedian on the bill but he was pointed out by Bill at the time.
Was in LA.
I definitely relate to bill.burr as a developing human more than almost anybody else! The video is grate thanks for making it
Thanks for the kind words my friend, I hope you subscribe to see more content coming soon ❤️
Love it man ..really thorough
What a great video of Bill Bur. Showing his humanity beyond his public side. Gotta like the guy.
I’ll always love Bill, he’s the man
Bro… what am amazing piece of work, instant sub!
Thank you so much brother
No one tells a story like Bill Burr.....ever!!! 💯
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
Most comedians have had traumatic experiences when they were young.
Louis Anderson comes to mind. Thanks Bill, for your humor buddy.
Gj man, nice balance of commentary and clips. Keep it up
Great video, congratulations, high quality material on your behalf.
@ 16:53. Thank you for squeezing that reference to the Norm MacDonald joke about Bill Cosby in your video. I really miss Norm and that reference, any reference really, reminds me how privileged I am to have been able to watch and listen to that old chunk of coal.
Great Job!! well done Nate
Thanks a lot my friend ❤️ hope you’re subbed and ready for the next one
Dude your docs are amazing
Thank you brother, I hope you subscribe to see more future documentaries coming soon ❤️
Someone uploaded every episode bill was on Opie and Anthony and it’s well worth a listen. He would often fill in for lil Jimmy Norton and would always just crush it.. if you haven’t listened it’s well worth it
Well I posted this before I watched the video. Realized he covers o&a in it so yes I feel stupid
Thanks for the kind words my brother, I hope you subscribe to see more future content coming soon ❤️
Definitely done sir@@TheComedyHistorian
Awesome doc just 1 vid and you’ve earned my sub 🎉
My new fav comedy channel!
Thank you for the kind words my friend ❤️ I hope you’re ready for more amazing content
Saw him in Vegas last month. It was awesome.
Bill Burr will always have my Heart because He speaks the Truth as Nasty as it is! 💪❤️💯
The philly rant makes me think of how we all love when a comic thrashes a heckler... but the whole crowd was the hecklers, so he let them all have it😂
Not too many people you can like warts and all. He created opportunities for himself, and then didn’t shy away from working them through. That is success.
Well done, Nate. Good video.
Thanks brother. I hope you subscribe to see more future content ❤️
