IMO, the reason those pickups sound so good is that although they're humbuckers, they're low output, so the harmonics remain pristine and audible. They have an almost acoustic ring to them.
So, I have an HB ST (strat) vintage style guitar. I swapped the Roswell pickups for a set of Fender Tex-Mex pickups I had on hand from a past project. There was no perceptible improvement. The Roswell pickups in my guitar were great - I assumed there would be a noticeable improvement when I put in brand name pickups that cost half what I spent on the guitar. Nope.
I didn’t think about making the stroke scene into a gif until you said it, and now I’m very tempted.
Why does it look like you are in Phillip McKnight's house
Danny The Jester because I’m locked in his basement, plz send help!
@@60CycleHumcast Not a bad place to be trapped, though.
@@60CycleHumcast Bullshit, he'd return you so fast due to either smell or appearance.
Adam M the smell %100, its pungent in here.
@@60CycleHumcast I expected no less. Keep up the good work.
Good honest assessment as always. I’m not a reverse headstock fan either. For what it’s worth, my most recent Squier vintage modified jazzmaster did not have any scuffing whatsoever and did not need to have the truss adjusted or any other adjustments made. Came set up great from the factory. These lower cost Chinese guitars are getting made better and better.
I have this guitar in the sunburst. I had the frets dressed and also had a bone nut and a tort pick guard installed. I will have the tuners swapped out for GraphTech Ratios. The pickups are Filter-Tron style Alnico 2 humbuckers that sound great. All in all, a good guitar that can become excellent with a bit of work.
What style of pickguard did you buy to fit this? was it a la cabronita pickguard? looking at doing same ta
That open D chord at the clean setting on the bridge, sounded sweet. Nice amp settings, too. Cheers.
got this same guitar in same colour for christmas, it needed a little setup and i also changed tuning machines, but overall this thing rocks hard, playes great, everything feels solid, and pickups are great too, they are not like "gretsch filtertrons", but they sound really good
I don't have enough experience with gretsches to have an opinion on the pickups, but they do sound different from any other pickups i have. Time will tell if i think they sound 'good' or 'bad'.
@@60CycleHumcast Can you try a Gretsch on your show? I bought the Streamliner G2622 hardtail. I feel it's worth double what I paid. The pickups are incredible on this guitar. Idk about the others, I imagine so
Thanks for the info. You must be a fan of reverse headstocks like me cause you didn't mention it. That's an awesome Xmas present. I'm waiting for Santa to bring my new Strat. His sled is running slow, lots of guitars to deliver this time of year. Enjoy your new axe mate
Yeah, reverse headstock is cool, but i came across a problem when i was changing tuning machines, they are left handed/reverse, or just normal tuning machine that you would find on left handed guitar, and replacement is not very easy to find
@@filipsak9913 well that stinks. Possibly Murphy's law or don't fix it if it ain't broke. Hopefully you find a solution. This sounds like the type of things us lefties would come across.
I love the solid, clean tone of this guitar.
The fuzzy distortion was cool.
Roswell is not an in-house brand. They are their own brand, they make pickups for several manufacturers. I love the ones in my HB jazz bass, sound better than the pups in my 2000 mexican jazz.
Turd Ferguson III interesting, well Harley Benton has been using them on all their stuff
Roswell pick-ups can also be bought from MusicStore, which is Thomann's largest competitor in Germany (www.musicstore.de/en_GB/GBP).
Thomann switched to this brand because they had trouble reliably sourcing from Wilkinson. I quite like them.
Yep. I believe they're a Korean brand that ship the pickups to the factories Harley Benton make their better stuff in. The cheapest Harley Benton's come with no name pick-ups that are probably sourced wherever the factory is getting pickups at the time.
the ms-60 is about as cheap as they come and it still had roswell branded pickups in it.
@@60CycleHumcast Depends on what time it is from, The one you have is the newer one, The MS-60 i have, i bought around 3-4 years ago and the guitars back then only came with wilkinsons, Roswell wasn't a thing on the HB guitars or basses backthen.
Roswell is pretty new to what comes being a stock thing in HB's today, Might be a good thing tho, The wilkinsons in my ms-60 is quite noisy compared to other singlecoils, i don't know if that noise problem is as present on the Roswell ones.
Also to note, The price of the HB doesnt matter to much, The standard series comes with no name pickups, The Vintage models and etc. comes with now roswell, just to keep in mind.
Love that finish and the sound of the pickups! Well worth the price! I actually ordered that same guitar in a lefty version. Waited 6 months. They couldn’t get one to me, so I cancelled the order. Now you got me wanting that thing again.
Another great Tele for the wall.
I have the sunburst version of this guitar, without the belly cut. It had a few minor issues when I received it from Thomann, some parts were not fitted straight and sturdy (bridge, ferrules, one of the tuning keys). I fixed that without much trouble. Furthermore I shielded the control cavity and the pickup switch cavity, polished the frets and replaced the oversized pickup screws. But: the neck is great, the pickups sound great with a little crunch, the reversed headstock is not a problem at all, in my experience. I can really recommend this one. Pricewise, you can buy one just for the heck of it.
there are big screws on those pickups, lol
You are by far my favorite annoying guitar gear reviewer . 😂
Robby Frick lol, thanks
I'm totally digging the looks and the sound of them Filtertron pups, may have to try one out soon 😎🎸
Just snagged one used for $125.00 and it is great!
I've been wanting one of those models for some time. I love the Cabronita tell and with the reverse headstock it's exactly what I want.
Just got this one last week i love it. Two pickup screws to adjust height where not straight in and hard to turn i killed one with the wrong philips screw driver but hey that was not a big problem. Guitar feels and sounds awesome. Happy i did that :)
As long as they don't sneak their prices up. How can you complain. But we'll see what the future brings. As long as they don't start getting a big head and think people buy their guitars because they want them. As long as they remember people buy them because they are cheap.
The bridge and reverse headstock is the dealmaker for me
I have the HB JA-60 OW, their version of the Jazzmaster. It has Roswells in it. I must say, for $155 after shipping, the guitar plays so well. It made the journey to the states securely. The intonation was good. Playable out of the box with minor tweaks.
I like the look of a reverse headstock on a tele. Gives it a more balanced look. The body has sorta down sloping lines, and the headstock lines bring it back up
Speaking of white knobs, The Guitologist is here!
I got one of these for a gift. In the Burst color. My only complaint is they advertise it with this nice bridge but the one you get it is super cheap and not what you see on the advertisement. Other than that little bait and switch on the part it's a great guitar for the price.
You should write Thomann about this. Might be a mistake. Maybe you'll get the replacement bridge or sth. They're known to be pretty nice.
I think Gretsch Filtrons are "low resistance" humbuckers (4.5k) that sound "more" like vintage single coils than even, say, PAF's.
I think this guitar sounds great, with the highs you get from single coils.
It's kinda like watching Ryan Fitzpatrick try out a new guitar... Eerily similar looking not to mention name!
Good that you picked a D chord as the first chord to play. I find that nut adjustment is woefully awful on alot of cheap guitars and the G string tends to be a bit high off the frets. So when playing a D the G string gets stretched or pushed down too far and makes the D chord somewhat sour sounding. This sounded fine. Well for a couple hundred bucks I think you are good to go.
I did see a recent video of a HB vs a PRS and I think even the PRS guy was a bit shocked at the price difference and playability and sound being quite marginal. Both the guys were top players so that does help but for the weekend musician doing weddings or events I cannot believe you would need the $3500 PRS. For a club or bar that really makes little sense. To me anyways.
The reason why American guitars are so expensive is partly the labour ... PRS is known for taking weeks to make a neck never mind a whole guitar... and that employee has to be paid. As well some wood and the finish can be expensive. On an electric I frankly don't think that is nearly as important as an acoustic which solely relies on the quality of the wood and structure to create tone.
As far as Thomann having stuff in stock... Uggh that is so frustrating. The stuff is virtually never in stock and if it is you better order that very second because it will be gone in days.
The middle position was awesome sounding almost like it has been mixed,,,nice job
From Leo: I like the guitar, and I think the pickups sound like they will work, even if that lack some of the note to note clarity of a true FilterTron. A true FilterTron does not have a very high output so it is a trade off. The minor finish flaws are pretty small for anything in that price. I agree, the reverse headstock is silly. It is like designing a stereo with the knobs on back or a computer with the keyboard behind the screen. If the neck pocket is sized to accept a standard replacement Strat neck, you could replace the neck with a Mighty Mite replacement and still be ok for the money.
True, but I wonder what neck pocket design the HB guitar has. Miighty Mite has necks for both, if the body has the right pocket dimensions.
For a budget guitar, I really like it. Sounds pretty decent to me
They need to make an HMT like this. Regular humbuckers, reverse, belly cut, solid finishes.
Ryan got a new guitar so all is not quiet on New Year's Day.
celticwolff I wonder if my neighbors were pissed off when I was recording this, lol
I got the Benton 7 string fan fret and for the price it is a great guitar!
How do these type of Harley Benton guitars compare to the Squire Classic Vibe guitars (which are quite a bit less cheap)?
If I was starting out playing again as a beginner, I'd definitely own a few of these guitars. For the price of my main gigging Axe I could buy HB's entire range! Great value.
I have this HB and enjoy the tone and look. The pick guard was a sad sight and replaced with a 4 ply tortoise. I also put a bone nut and roller tree's on there for fun. The neck is nice and lacquer free for smooth playing. I would call it on the thin side with a flat radius. The frequencies, for me, give lower mid's pronounced a bit, with some high top end adding just a bit in there, creating a fullness humbucker flavor but with less output than my other humbucker guitars.
did you cut a new pickguard or did you order it from somewhere?
I love the sound of this guitar! I will have one! Oh yes I will!
Bobby Williams it’s pretty great
Thanks!
I've got my own 'El Cabron' which I made myself about 5 years ago. It's a beautiful guitar if I say so myself. When I was building it I decided that I was going to make it to high end specs regarding hardware etc.......but......like a twat I spent not far off £250 for a set of TV Jones Classic pickups. I didn't know any better at the time and fell for the hype.
I have since then learnt a lot about pickups and most of the time I wind my own sets for my 9 guitars.
A few months ago I stumbled upon Roswell pickups and as I don't have the components to wind my own Filtertron type pickups, I decided to have a punt at their FLT pickups for about £23 each 😮!!
All I can say is wow !! They kick my TV Joneses to the ground. I was super impressed with their smooth alnico 2 Filtertron-a-like. I checked them against my TV's with my multimeter and they're close on the DC resistance, and close on the inductance. I am 99% that they're wound with 42AWG wire - IMO the best wire to use on Filtertrons. They also came in nice little cloth tie bags and there was also a nice touch of a pick with an alien head (Roswell UFO stuff).
For under £50 I couldn't be happier. So much so, that my TV Joneses are now for sale and never again will I spend the kind of money that I did on the TV Jones.
I'm now curious as to what other delights Roswell have for sale, and I might just rip out my other expensive pickups that I bought in the past and swap them for Roswells, then sell my expensive ones to get back the money I stupidly spent thinking I was getting something special.
Roswell pickups are very good. Don't fall into the trap of snobbery, placebo, and utter bollocks that I fell into. You do not have to spend hundreds of pounds to get a good set of pickups. Roswell FLT's cost less than a fifth that I paid for my TV Jones Classics and they're much better, it's ridiculous !!👍
yeah, im still in love with the pickups in this guitar, i might have to buy a set for another guitar.
Happy New Year!!!!!! those scuffs on both sides might b from some type of stand or block that it was resting on while being inspected or strung ....try taking a 'magic eraser' and gently with the eraser wet - see if u can absorb the scuffs off the guitar. I have had better luck with Wolf Guitars than HB ones ....the Wolf guitars seem to go thru a better quality inspection before being shipped out and their frets are always flawless. With the HB , how many guitars does that make now for your collection ( including bass and acoustic) ????...........try stringn up the HB with flat wound strings and see how the filtrons sing than...I did that with my Epiphone Swingmaster and has made a great difference, bending becomes irrelevant but vibrato takes on a new trick of the tale.... Enjoy your new guitar !!!!!!
Chaotic Embrace I was able to scrape it away a bit with my nail, I bet it will buff right out
I have an identical one. I think it plays and sounds great. The tuners are kind of close together a little bit more spacing would have been nice but not a deal breaker for me. A small dead spot on one of the tuning pegs, but that is okay. Sounds great! I'd buy again. I dropped and broke the headstock on my HB sc450 plus. I liked it so well, I ordered a new one.
I have an RB 600 that has those pick ups and I really like their sound. Nice clarity to them, or at least the ones I have.
Sounds good Ryanl. I like that color because it is different. When I buy a sub 500 dollar guitar, I figure I'll have to fix some things on it but the positives should weigh out the negatives.
Did you do the opening up and exploring this Guitar as promised? If so ‘anyone got a link?
That's been one of my favorite HB Tele' s also like the Prince Tele copy
the prince one is great. i was really impressed with it when i played it at thomann
I had a borrow of one of these, in comparison to my cabronita tele it holds up decent enough, only thing I would've done is get a pro setup.
...they did some new colors with sunblasted finish of this model this year and they look so... tempting :D
radius is speced at 350 mm which converts to 13.7 inches
THOMANN SHILL!
But seriously, 150 bucks for that is a steal.
Those A2 buckers sounds great too.
That finish is called “Blonde”
Mine literally came yesterday haha. Really happy with it!
Looks cool. I like the reverse headstock thing! Thx Ryan.
Most Harley Benton have a 13.75"/350 mm fingerboard radius, flatter than Les Pauls which usually have 12".
7-string models usually have 15.75"/400 mm.
The 8-string R-458 has 20"/510 mm.
Looks good, sounds good.
Send it back!
calm down McKnightrider
That's fucking hilarious !
Ayy Lmao 🤣
@@ayylmao5121 FLEX
I’d be tempted to send it back just so you could make a video about it, lol. ;-)
Note: Roswell is not Thomann's/Harley Benton's brand. It's a South Korean pickup manufacturer own by "WSC Music" that make lots of different parts for guitars and basses.
😊👍
Looks great to me! Happy New Year!
Awesome as always cheers rock on
That's a good guitar to leave on the stand to grab whenever u wanna play a quick riff or something!.... I'd buy it..I'm thinking about a "t" style for my next guitar.... I think sweetwater got the revv g4 pedal, they put out a demo video today of it...
Gorgeous
Looks like they replaced the bridge on newer models. Maybe a Wilkinson bridge now?
Hi Ryan, do you think fender neck will fit to that body? I am not a fan of reversed headstock.
Thank you man
Sounds really nice. I wish it didn't have that ugly pickguard, but that's personal taste. I suppose one could always put a new one on, or just remove it and fill the holes. The reverse headstock is a no-go for me, but I do like the sound...maybe change the neck too? I need to go see how much these are. Great video, Ryan!
Sounds fucken beautiful , Mate and that Colour is Great ! Looks like good value for money .
What's that black guitar hanging next to the jazzmaster?
The finish looks like some type of white wash. Insanely inexpensive they appear!
"Please dont make a Gif of this"
Can you get the "Signature tele sound" out of this? How do these pickups compare to regular tele single coils?
Liked that dirt tone you threw out.
Happy new year Ryan. Here's an idea for a video: why do cheap guitar pickups always sound darker/muddier than more expensive ones?
Luis Fonseca I couldn’t tell you why, but Im building a pickup testing guitar right now, so I’ll be doing comparison videos soon. ;-)
The reason for this might be the fact that most cheaper guitars use ceramic magnet pick ups and they tend to have a darker sound than the Alnicos.
@@nazmoking3171 it also might just be a quality control thing, i've noticed with duncan designed pickups some will sound really good and some wont, with a higher end pickup someone will be doing quality control to make sure each pickup sounds the way it should before its shipped. Magnets to make a difference though.
I have had quite som experience with cheaper pickups for Tele. They were all overwound, which translates to higher output and less treble. Some of them
were Alnicos, but that didn´t help at all. I think they think people wants high output.
the finish looks like a glazed Krispy Kreme donut!
maybe i should make a krispy kreme pickguard for it, lol
Okay. I want this.
Many people cannot afford anything more than affordable guitars, don't make them feel bad because they can't but American "high priced" guitars!
was I making people feel bad?
@@60CycleHumcast Not at all! I'm just tired of "this is a great guitar, (For The Money)" type of reviews. On SSI, and not being able to afford more guitars, I just got a Tele-type guitar that has all the features I'd have to go to the custom shop to get!
i try to be realistic about what the guitar is and isn't. I will say that i think its very close in quality to the $350 squire tele that i happen to love. its pretty amazing how great these affordable guitars can be these days. When i started playing a $200 guitar would be nearly unplayable.
is it better than fender squier affinity?
If you don't like the scuff marks on the heel I would take some tru oil to the neck before it gets any worse. That's just an unfinished neck issue.
Very nice !!
I dig it
What is the red guitar in the background with the P90s?
I think you were right on the 13 point something radius.
yeah
I'm a lefty but this is definitely a winner👍I envy the availability to all you righties.
@Quiksilver They have this one lefty for sure? I haven't checked yet
@Quiksilver good work. Thanks. Gasp it has a belly cut. Oh dude. I always say if I buy another Tele it must have that. Oh man I hope they have this for some time. I'm waiting on a guitar I just ordered. This will be next. Thanks bro!
I must watch this video again!
I still want the mustang Ryan got from them. They got it lefty too 😀
Another company had a Tele with a belly cut and arm cut lefty and righty. Unfortunately it's been discontinued
I bet the grease in the tuners got thickened because of the cold weather, and it will get more loose after some time indoors.
Dumb question: I've just bought the item in this video (largely on 60 c hum's recommendations and others), but am hoping to swap the bridge pickup with a P90 soapbox. Is that feasible in terms of size?
With the help of a router yes. Not as is no. The pickups are like half an inch to short width wise.
@@Robster-Craw thanks!
Will that take a Fender neck? Maybe you could put a new neck on and have a normal headstock (and maybe a different fretboard/inlays)
Question: if you were stuck on a desert island in the middle of the German countryside and had to choose between that and the MS-60, which would you pick?
I have the ms-60 with the tremolo and its a fun guitar but also quirky in the way fender offsets can tend to be quirky. The pickups are low output and bright. the te-90 is a more traditional all around players guitar.
Most HBs got 350 mm fretboard radius, wich translates to around 13,3".
I was looking at getting the same guitar. Also the Prince style one. How did you like the one you tried?
Darrell Curry the prince style one was great! Snappy and twangy with a great look.
Have you played their JA 60 with the Roswells in Ebony and Wilkinson pick ups in the tobacco burst ..do a compare please...and play a bit more ...The beach boy surfjng sounds that you go for will be right up your street bro...trust me ..a HB Jazzmaster homage ! 🙏🙏😈
Got mine sent to me with 10’s on it.
Wonder how it would sound with 9’s
Do you like the Ibanez Tubescreamer Amp?
was it a B stock ? ...I saw a black label on the box .
hmmm, its possible, ill take a look at the email i got for it too see if i can figure it out.
Virtually every reviewer says, "I'm not a big fan of reverse headstocks..." But I am just a curious dude.... what difference does it make? 70% of guitars have two or three tuners on the other side of the headstock, so why is it a big deal to have six? And what's the difference than having them all on the other side like a Tele or Strat? I don't play yet, but I can't help but wonder...
It makes the tension/resonance of the string feel different. It also feels clumsy to tune when you are used to the other way around.
60 Cycle Hum - Right on... I had no idea. Thanks and cheers
Can you find after market parts for this guitar in case you need to
change something? Also would you recommend this guitar or the Squier
standad tele? Many thanks
standard parts like the bridge or tuners could certainly be swapped, i have a feeling you would need to cut a new pickguard to replace that though. I haven't messed with a squier standard tele but id say the build quality is similar to the squier contemporary tele i have. It really comes down the the pickups in that scenario, do you want the twang/punch of classic tele pickups or the chime/crunch of the filterton style pickups of the harley benton? thats not a decision i can make for you.
Thank you so much for your answer, I really, really appreciate your help. I am ignorant because I am basically buying my first guitar and all I wish for is something playable to concentrate on my practice.
flying formation either guitar is just fine as a first guitar. The reality between the two guitars is that it will be easier to resell the squire someday.
I truly love the Harley Benton, I went for it. I've just bought it on Thomann but I'll have to wait for about a week because it's out of stock. Thanks for your advice, all the best mate.
i can’t decide on how i feel about it
Yeah, had seen this one before, it's a great guitar and also very shreddy and particularly good for metal sounds. HB or Thoman have replaced the Wilkinson PUs for Roswells this year since they had issues with factories in China using fake Wilkinsons (cheap microphoned PUs) so now they allegedly have to be the real deal.
Hey Ryan, have you ever thought of reviewing Slick guitars? They come at a similar pricepoint as most decent Harley Bentons, and are sold by GFS. I'm curious about your opinions on them!
the only reason i havent gotten my hands on a slick is because i hate the logo on the headstock, lol. Ive thought about trying out one of the double cut ones though.
@@60CycleHumcast ive heard more people about that. Just sand it off, and make a custom logo!
I wish they would open an outlet in the US.
I don't know, I don't like much the overdrive tone, it sounds too much gritty to me although I like the gritty tone. I don't know if it's fault of the pickups because they are "Filtertron inspired" but I've never tried a guitar with original Filtertron pickups so I can't tell that this is the actual sound of an overdriven Filtertron. Anyway I like the clean sound.
They look and sound pretty good man! How are these guys making any money?!
13.78 inch radius
what a sexy guitar
What amp and pedals are bwing used????
fender princeton RI, Ibanez TSA15h and a greenchild klazo drive for the dirt.
