I remember as a young student, telling my drum teacher that I would never be as good as Billy Cobham. His answer was classic. He said, “That’s okay. He can only play one gig at a time. There’s room for you too .”
I had a similar thing happen when I first met my drum teacher. I was like I’ll never be as good as Brujner or Eric Moore. He just chuckled and said you never know lol.
I've always said to my students: there's that drum idol you idolise and compare yourself to but always make sure you are aware of you! I'd qualify this with this observation: when your idol is playing somewhere it's the audience who are there that enjoy that moment the most. When you play anywhere it's you that audience are listening to in that moment. Two separate moments. Both with an audience for music to a greater or lesser scale. Your place is where you are and when you play. Your significance is equal to your hero in that moment. If we allowed only our heroes to play there would be countless places around the world without live music to enjoy. When you play you entertain that audience at that time and in that place. What music fan would I be to be at your gig and somehow think: he's great but no Billy Cobham!? It's not on my mind though. Not remotely. Billy is wherever, on the other side of the planet, and you are right Infront of me and the rest in attendance. I have family and friends around the world but I'm only connected best when together in person. You are the connection to music when you play to any particular audience.. do us all a favour and make sure you keep getting gigs. The public shouldn't have to wait for Cobham to finally visit that area or never visit at all. You fill the gap in the market with your own contributions. You are great and I know that without even hearing ya. I know cause you care. Think of gigs as a dinner table. What worth is any person not present at that table over the people who are? Converse and laugh and make the moment for the people there. That's your value and moment which noone can take from you
Such a Great response, wise and true. I'm not a Drummer but it applies in whatever instrument we choose. I play Bass and was talking with a great friend of mine who was a Tenor Saxman. He always said " Just be the Best You".
Notice one thing about both these guys who are among the top master's of drumming , they're both humble super nice people !!! Long live BIlly Cobham & Terry Bozzio !!! The best of the best !!
In the 70's, there was Billy Cobham...and everyone else. He was the Micheal Jordan of drumming. When he came on the scene, he was playing open handed, with super clean singles going across the toms at light speed, and ultimate odd time mastery. Just an otherworldly experience.
Billy Cobham is arguably Earth's greatest drummer and one the most gracious and humble people you could ever meet. I was lucky to meet him at a High School of Music and Art alumni reunion in Paris in the late 1990s, and to this day regret that my talking endlessly about John McLaughlin's compositions got in the way of my expressing to him how much his own music meant to me.
Fantastic interview ...remember watching Mr.Billy Cobham about 4 years ago at Ronnie Scotts in London playing with a full Big Band..about 1/2 way through the evening ..Billy Cobham paused ..said he would do another song....instead he sized up the band ..sensed they were tired and said..I will give the boys in the band a break and went into a long drum solo that was jaw dropping ..it waa priceless and the audience and the band applauded ..that was also priceless ...joy and laughs all around ..Mr Cobham is indeed a real gracious man ...
I vividly remember the day I bought birds of fire. I couldn’t even get through the title track. I had to stop the record 30 seconds in and start again. My life both as a musician and drummer was forever changed by Billy’s beautifully inventive and powerful playing.
Terry and Billy OMG ...............when Terry tells him how Deep (Stupid ;-) ) his pocket is . i almost teared up , BECAUSE !!!!!! YES!!!!! COBHAM'S POCKET IS SOOOOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL SO FULL OF WISDOM ..... KEEP GOING TERRY ..........YOU BOTH ARE MY FAVORITES
Billy was one of the drummers who made me start to play drums. I listened to him in Stanley Clarke's School Days album and was amazed. Then started to buy anything that he had ever recorded.
Terry and Phil Collins imo were two drummers with the mechanics that sort of assimilated what Billy was doing but Billy is definitely a trail blazing drummer to say the least! Tony Williams is one of my all time favorite drummers, with his jazz and creative bombastic jazz rock style of drumming.
What a phenomenal interview! I was fortunate to catch Bill with the Mahavishnu Orchestra then again in the 70’s in Vegas when he did a drum clinic at the musicians union. I was in the 1st row! It’s burned into my memory!!! Thanks Mr. Cobham. You are THE best!!
The first time I saw The B👑C Live was at My Fathers Place with Eric Gale he was using the SAME kit from the Cobham Meets Bellson Video and the first time I ever heard Bozzio was a Live recoding at the same venue.. Heavy Metal Be Bop . The Props Terry gives to Bill are just Spot On and well deserved. Good on Terry. A Musicians Musician a Drummers Drummer.. These Cats are Legendary
I am an old school Bonham, Paice, Baker, Mitchell type drummer. This video was absolutely superb. I have always loved Cobham but was never a fan of Bozzio until now. Just a beautiful moment. I now respect Bozzio so much more. I do know how musical he is. I just hated all that 30 piece drum kit stuff, but each to their own. An amazing interview.
I saw Billy perform in Moscow when I was living there in the early 2000's. I went backstage to talk to him (something I could get away with there) and he was very friendly and willing to have a chat. At one point a local news crew came up to interview him, I said, "Well, I'll take off now and get out of your way" but he insisted I stay so we could finish our conversation after they got done with the interview. With those glasses Terry looks kind of like Harvey Keitel.
Billy Cobham is an Icon. When he said he heard other people's "opinions " of his music, it knocked me out. Great conversation between Two Master Drummers and listening to Terry's adoration for one of his idols was cool. The mutual respect is even Cooler.
I saw Terry playing at the Uptown Theater in Chicago with Frank Zappa, early 1980s. Billy did a Tama Drum clinic in a music store I worked at, also in the 1980s. Got to have a few pleasant words with him. Both are top of the heap, super drummers!
I remember seeing Billy Cobham playing with the Michael Sagmeister trio around 1985 in Osnabrück / Germany in a huge circus ‘club tent’ called Hyde Park!
When your father's letting a young you, know about these 2 drummer's(first instructional video was Terry in 88/89? VHS😆)"If you want to be good, listen to this!" ✌️🥁
Much of what made "Spectrum" such a landmark album(aside from Billy's brilliant compositions and drumming) is the heartfelt warm, greasy, funky foul tone of the young guitarist "Tommy Bolin" (RIP) 🔥There are many others at the time with far more technique (and also great feel ) but no other seemelesy bridged the rock. jazz , funk. Tommy Bolin was a fkn monster. On Spectrum yes, just beautiful, and his two solo album, yes yes yes, just gorgeous. I saw him live with Deep Purple at Wembley Empire Pool in '76. He was spinning round while he played with a long red scarf round his neck. Real rock god warrior stuff!!
In high school we loved everything Tommy Bolin. We even played 'Owed to G' by Deep Purple in our band for the high school talent show. Tommy played guitar on that cut. Killer song

Believe it or not, in 1998 I had the opportunity to have dinner with Mr. Cobham, my idol, on the occasion of the recording of an educational video that took place in Genoa, Italy (my hometown). For legal reasons (not referring to Mr. Cobham but to something else) this video was never released but I still have the recordings of that event. Him and me, alone. Needless to say, I pestered him with questions, as Billy was and still is my hero. That was a conversation, an interview, my personal interview and I still remember it as one of the strangest and most beautiful moments of my life. At one point, however, Billy couldn't stand it anymore and called Dado Moroni on the phone, who saved him from me. My nickname, which I love, is related to him in some way, being the mangling of the name of one of his labels (Bilham Cobly Productions, Inc.)
Wow my 2-favorite drummers all in one place...! I have made Music Videos with both of your talents. I loved hearing the story when Mahavishnu was the Back-Up Band for ZAPPA and Frank was Blown Away with Billies Drumming...! Frank Said Billy was the Loudest Drummer he ever heard.
We lived in BuckFum, Wyoming in the mid-1970s and there was a small community college and we knew a girl that was working in their radio station. We asked her to play Billy Cobham for those Cowboys. The station student manager (who was a real control freak) called up after 20 seconds screaming at and said that that wasn't allowed. But it was a 15 minute song and it had to finish. Most of the listeners called in and said it was amazing.
I had the opportunity to see Terry PREMIERE with Frank Zappa at UCSB. This was back in the days of festival seating. Billy I have seen live and have had the honor of having a few lessons with him and he is as humble as he is great. One of a kind drummer and man.
Thanks professors of the drumsticks. Awesome to be here. If anyone's interested l watch a drummer that has covered some Tony Williams and Billy's Stratus. Alfonso Mocerino. even though Billy specifically said hey😆
Hey Terry & Billy 👋 I don't know if you guys read the comments but I just wanted to say that interview was "Pretty inspiring" 😇👏 Not just because you're both awe inspiring drummers who have influenced generations of fans, but even more so, because of how humble you both are & the respect you show each other, not competing but acknowledging each other's unique & diverse talents. Billy was kind enough to let me watch a session at the Electric Ladyland Studio when I was a mere lad. One of the greatest drummers and a great guy!
Love the Miles Davis stories at the end. Billy Cobham is a power house!
You've got to love Terry's drum-themed decor. It's not an instrument, it's a way of life!
Saw him in 1975 in Munich and meet him after the show and we go in a Jazzclub, what a nice Person and one of the greatest on drums...
Great conversation with two masters.
My all time favorite he inspired me to playing at age 50

There should be a love button! Billy, young at heart 💕

This was just 20 minutes of Terry telling Billy how great he is. "you can play everything..odd time signatures.. Latin grooves.. man you're the best"
The true GOATS are the most humble people.
Two of my all-time favorites. I saw Billy Cobham in SF in the ‘90s. He emitted so much joy.
This convo is historic. Terry, great job facilitating that convo. The Miles dialog will (is) historic.
Mahavishnu and his solo stuff is impeccable!
Got the opportunity to see and meet the great Mr. Cobham on three different occasions! Excellent musician and super nice guy!
Between Bozzio in Missing Persons, solo drum records and Zappa and Cobham's amazing "Smoking" LP, holy christ, so much inspiration.

I met Billy after a show in a jazz club in Hollywood, CA around 1998... Rapped for 1-2mn...great guy
His drumming on the inner mounting flame, phenomenal Billy and mahavishnu
Between Horace Silver in 68' and Mahavishnu in 70-71 a genius was unleashed on the world.
All the incredible stories from these guys are just utterly hilarious. Could listen to them for days.

I wish Billy would do more stuff with Tony Levin, that would be great.
Pleased to hear Keith Copeland gets remembered.
I like Billy's Hassalblad camera t-shirt that he's wearing.
Great great interview !!
Is there any chance of seeing the line up of musicians that Mr. Bozzio mentioned where he wanted to "just play" and improvise? Maybe on UA-cam? Bozzio is one of my favorite drummers since the 80s with Missing Persons!
Yes, it’s out there. Phone cam recording, as I remember.
To me you are looking at #1 and #2 of all time , hands down !
Two great drummers.....the stories
Terry Bozzio always showes respect to the elder Generation. And Billy Cobham really deserves it. He is unique like Bernard Purdie is and Tony Williams was. And in future, it will be Marco Minnemann, Dave Grohl or Simon Phillips doing an interview with Terry Bozzio in the same way hopefully.
Billy is only a few years older than Terry.
😂 Bill is a character.
Great rap! What do you all think of Antonio Sanchez?
HOW DID I KNOW he would say he got backing from Roy Haynes at the beginning??? 😱 My goodness!!! It figures!!
COBHAM!!!
Where is part 2 ?
The Beethoven of Percussion. PERIOD!! G.O.A.T.
I remember Steve Arrington telling me Billy Cobham is the best drummer alive.

Lots of stuff but used very wisely.
❤️🙏🏻👍🏻 (J.I.L.)

Terry,Frank's best drummer for the styles. Yeah, better for Frank then Vinny was.
