Thank you Awall for this in depth pro tips to better OBS. As a Canadian Military Veteran 27.5 years of service and disabilities from my military service, I use OBS , Live Elements and Now because of your expert advice Restream. I try to help other veterans, USA / CANADA in filing claims to VAC " Veterans Affairs" for their disabilities all the while streaming a game, be it Star Citizen, Call of Duty or ONE on ONE. This is invaluable advice and FREE, whats not to like. I may be taking you up on a Phone call / video for support advice in the near future for moving this even better and father. THANK YOU so much for making this video Andrew.

    Great TIPS.
#14 is actually Megabits not Megabyte. - Megabit /Gigabit are used for speed and network measurement. Megabyte/Gigabyte are used for storage and file sizes.

And if you want to convert between the two, Megabyte -> Megabit multiply by 8; Megabit -> Megabyte divide by 8

And byte is capital B (megabyte is MB), while bit is lower case b (megabit is Mb). Other than that this is a GREAT video. I'm going to be spending a couple of hours with it to fix up my OBS! Thank you!!!

That was bothering me too. I really doesn't make a difference in this video, but in most cases, there is a big difference (8x) between x bits/sec and x Bytes/sec.

Microphone settings (Comressor, limiter, etc.) are personal, there isn't a single best setting like you preach. Should've explained each slider to ease that process.
A tip from me: Scenes, Sources, Buttons, ... panels are all draggable, and can be moved to those empty wasted grey areas around preview window. Then OBS takes less space, can appear next to live chat window and fit. If you're inspecting some little detail and need to zoom in on preview: pop it out into separate window (right-click).

Hello my brother. I just wanted to say a massive thank you for this video. You have selflessly shared very good info that helps nubies like myself put out good quality videos. I have just started (as a complete novice) putting out sermons and by God's Grace other Christian content for my church I believe this will help my church's members who regularly tune in, and anyone else seeking biblical truths, access good quality, biblical content. Again; a massive thank you, and may our heavenly Father bless your channel so that you will continue to be prosperous, and charitable to your viewers. If government leaders were half as thoughtful for the common man as you, God's battle to protect us from evil would no doubt be, less difficult.. God bless and keep up the good work.

Explaining the different scenes was very useful, I always wondered how people did that so easily. Nothing I had seen so far about setting up OBS mentioned separating scenes. edit: A little tip for others, I created a new scene with a second sound source one day, and this created a reverb effect in my stream which I personally couldn't hear until I played it back later. The stream was over an hour long and no one said anything! Always do a test recording of your settings to see how things might look and sound before you go live.

This is most definitely The Best tutorial I have come across, I do learn decent stuff from Michael Ferrer's post but by far yours in more no non-sense and less of the comedy of so many others trying too hard to win one over to collect likes & subscribes. Whereas your posts deliver with high end information that cuts through the BS and not trying to sell me ads or join podcast blah blah blah.... Besides the face when you are cheap (as I am) or don't have the resources to spend the dough to get experts seminar or webinars, like you suggested in another of your post. Please keep up the wonderful posts for the little guys and Thank you for so much I have gained from one video!!!!!!!!!!!

This guy is absolutely amazing and I've learned a ton. Thank you! Though, I did notice this video stagger and stutter a few times due to some of the performance settings he suggests. Also, when he says "megabytes" referring to your upload rate, he should have said "megabits". Subtle difference but important. Internet speed is measured in bits per second, and 1 byte = 8 bits. When making your quality performance calculations this makes a huge difference.

I was messing with the canvas size yesterday because I wanted to test streaming in 4K. OBS won't allow a canvas size bigger than the screen's current resolution. So, I can't stream 4K from my 1080P laptop. I had to use my desktop screen which is wide 5K screen, and force it to 4K.

You videos are amazing. No BS, I have learned so much in such a short period of time - thank you! Do you have any suggestions (or videos) on incorporating either an eGPU or a separate "gaming" machine into my setup? right now I'm using my work laptop (macbook pro) primarily for feeding zoom through OBS. At times it can get glitchy and I can hear the fan screaming for mercy. I suspect a better setup would be to separate them and use the laptop primarily for powerpoint or whatever I'm demonstrating in my web browser and then have OBS, Zoom, my DSLR webcam and mic coming into a separate system. Thank you again, guilty as charged of at least half of the above offenses!

One thing I wish OBS had was something similar to what Pro Tools does. You can hide a channel strip in PT and you can hide and disable a channel as well. I used that all the time when I’m tracking or mixing. I wish you can disable and hide audio tracks as well instead of muting them. As an extra precaution, I also lower the volume to 0 to the audio sources I don’t use in OBS as well.

I have only one sound input/audio source in OBS, and that's Wave Link Stream. I route all my audio through Wave Link, mic, browser, game audio, everything that I can route through Wave Link I do
And from what you've said, I should technically be able to stream at a bitrate of about 25000? My upload speed is about 290 Mbit/s or ~36 MB/s.

14:50 I downloaded the audio track of this UA-cam video (192kbps). UA-cam doesn't allow 320kbps so it's pointless to set that high, unless your profile is ripping audio from games.

  • @82ndRelic

    Great vid!
Let me ask you something. When you discuss internet speed, you say MBps not Mbps [big B vs little b]. Do you mean megabytes or megabits?
Internet transmission speed is generally measured by megabits/ps [Mbps].
Megabytes [MBps] are 8x that of Mbps (1Byte = 8 bits) so that number doesn't really translate well since internet speed has been much slower than motherboard architecture bus speeds constructed in the past 30 yrs. But that's changed with internet phase/amplitude shifting and improved main board bus speeds.
Bottom line: I translate 5 MBps as 40 Mbps. So I just want to make sure I'm interpreting the modern-day vernacular correctly since I'm of the generation where the 56k modem prevailed.

My camera is 1080p60, but I resize it in most scenes. Should I be using a 'scale/aspect ratio' filter? Or just manually resize it? Not sure what the optimal method is for both picture quality and performance.

Just to be sure that I am understanding this correctly. My upload speed was 123 Mbps. Therefore, my streaming bitrate (max) is 70% of that x 1000 = approx. 26,000 Kbps. Correct? If so, then I can then adjust
my recording output bit rate to a higher rate than that? What rate would you then suggest I adjust my recording bitrate to? Thanks for your input. This video is fantastic. I will be following you from here on out as I try to dive into the world of content creation.

hey mate thanks for reaching out about this so your recording bitrates depends on what gpu you have i mean is it from nvidia or amd? but if its from nvidia a value of 60,000 would be perfect as 60,000 is the limit of the nvenc encoder! above than that will not be not doing anything as the gpu will only be using 60,000 only

3:00: so because 1 source exceeds canvas size, I should go over and size-up all other sources?
No, you set the canvas size to what screen ratio you're going for, most likely the monitor resolution you'll be recording most, then Ctrl+F new sources and optionally scaling them the way you see fit (if they escape bounds for example).
It's factual that canvas should be big for comfortable positioning of sources, just your 4k camera argument was wrong - 1 source doesn't dictate your entire canvas.

OBS will identify NDI, my webcam. Yet OBS doesn’t see my ATEM.
I’m running Mojave 10.14.6 on my mid 2013 laptop.
Blackmagic is telling me I’m not supposed to be able to stream using 8.6 with Mojave. I might need to uninstall this newer version of the ATEM software and use this older version which might allow me to have OBS see my ATEM 810..
