I understand why you're sad, you can't record if Linus has your literal recording rig.
@@jonleibow3604 I appreciate this comment
I think they should do more with weird janky hardware, even if it’s just more sleeper pcs
Or do a ‘Alex’s junkyard pc guide’ on what things to look for in case etc
I think it's sad that LTT is basically unqualified to do that at this point. like, I'd trust them to review some kind of old bizarre thing or talk about a classic PC, but the fact is they're much too close to being Apple-only user tiers sometimes with Linus himself likely being one of the only non-zoomer types other than Anythony and even he has this tendency to be about "tech" not technology, and yes there's a massive difference.
I don't want to come off as bashing them (which I sometimes do but only when it comes to brand fanboyism, which jayz and HWUB both have preferences but can be at least unbiased, whereas here it's hard to take GPU stuff as seriously sometimes, any maybe partly because of being stuck in the "Intel and nVidia are the only options for gaming" mindset of the early to mid 2010s, or a lot of other years really other than 7970 and now pretty much) but coming here for a neat "trash build PC" and seeing a GTX 1070 be called not just budget but "ruthless economy build" makes it practically impossible for me to take the concept of them even being able to conceptualize the mentality of building a used part PC, when they're buying $10,000 prototype widescreens and dropping multi thousand dollar Threadrippers.
It's really just not their thing, unless it's another neat Linus video of him doing what he's passionate about like finding an utterly bizarre old multi-GPU from before SLI was a thing. It's partly why I think jayztwocents is the most useful out of all of them by far because GN basically does the turbo autis--I mean enthusiast stuff, which can be exceedingly useful for finding a not junk prebuilt, but it's really just Jay who's I think most solidly in touch with the kind of average gamer who could benefit from that. I think it's something that makes his channel really valuable to first time/novice PC builders, because he's really able to connect with that mentality and imagine the kinds of questions and problems that a beginner working on a shoestring budget may come up with, whereas I think that Linus is so thoroughly far removed from that for so long it's like the bourgeois descendant of nouveau riche trying to put together a video for shopping the best K-Mart sneakers. Which is even more odd considering Jay may've been in the business longest and has spare 3090s all over the place.
Again not trying to bash, just pointing it's really not their "brand" in the same sense HWUB said they'd not do gaming mice reviews although mainly my favourite videos of LTT is all the neat weird stuff they find, like that microSD alleged SSD, jank Chinese chips or soldered on 1050tis, ancient computer tech etc. So I do also wonder even just in marketing sense whether it would work for them, or how much shiny new stuff compares to interest in the old/unique hardware.
OH wait also nvm btw Linus actually did one of the best new PC builder videos come to think. It was like hour and a half long, and very both descriptive and concise without being confusing. I was more thinking about someone shopping around comparing parts (I found GN and HWUB the two most useful per part, with techyescity and level1 being good mentions too idk why techyescity isn't brought up as much or Wendel they're both good too).
Linus: *pulls a pc case out of a dumpster*

You can tell hes happy to not be stressing about a really expensive really complicated build
I think he's partly also just getting to do something he enjoys without having to have some sponsor breathing down his neck. Sometimes you can just see the "I-work-retail" levels of pain in his eyes as he's introducing sponsors and thanking different companies, with whom he's had the joy of all the behind the scenes drama and dumb stuff we don't normally see unless Steve Burke gets particularly ticked off at somebody like Newegg. So I really think it's not that it's expensive or complicated (he's not poor, and they do get sent stuff) but that it's about the business behind the scenes crap which he's wonderfully bereft of suffering through here. I think that's another reason why he's always so much happier working on old unique hardware, not just for nostalgia or geeking out about something, but because it's *his* as opposed to *theirs* if that makes any sense. It's like doing a personal side business/project you want to do, versus being on deadline and under contract. Which is sad because I think his videos are more joyous to watch when they're joyous.
Well maybe not always. Let's be honest we're all enjoying watching GN suffer the 69 layers of hell of prebuilts.

When I was in college, my first desktop was an eMachines case that I got out of a dumpster, an HP mobo that came from someone who knew I was interested in computers and had a dead computer with a working mobo. yes but as stated it cost him employee time just to think up this computer not just build it, by that defintion it's not a 500$ PC, the same argument can be made for the budget system, what's the point in tidy wire runs when it's all about performance? I also bought a 250G PATA drive for $70. (I'm up to ~50TB now), Intel E2160 (only $70, low-end dual-core Pentium but great for OC because that was before cpu locking), and 4GB of RAM for $87.
I also bought the WRT54GL router which was very popular for running alternative firmware (e.g. DD-WRT). It was also my first foray into WiFi so I quit having to run ethernet cables around the house.
I had one of the earliest modular PSUs -- Hiper Type-R 580W. Fully-sleeved with nice screw-on coax-type connectors. The company was kind of a one-hit wonder though and no longer exists. I actually have this exact case but everything in there is still intact. It has better airflow than my previous Aero cool RGB Gaming-Tower Rift. Crazy
"The Antec Side of the Road Edition"......So that's what fell out of the back of the truck on my way to the landfill
I used to have this case, now my dad still has it in his home office. The idea with the PSU at the bottom heat-shielded from the mobo and also all mobo heat could be vented topwards (the natural direction hot air wants to go) without passing through the PSU first with the right CPU cooler installed in the right direction was pretty rad when that case was new!
@@renereiche seems like it could deliver almost rackmount server type airflow. Like it would have better pressure with the different compartments.
OK, I'm just gonna say it. I think that case looks pretty badass. I love that industrial utilitarian/military look. It's even got front mounts for optical drives and removable HDDs/SSDs!

I instantly recognized the Antec P180 when Linus pulled the wrecked shell onto the desk. What I didn't expect is for his P180 and mine to be part of the Side of the Road Edition. Looks as if you had to compromise on the front facia while I wound up with a bashed-in pair of USB ports. No chance you'd want to part with that molded plug, would you, Linus? 😉

people aren't accidentally grabbing HDDs for important shit, it's 2020 bud
@@VeggieRice You're clueless or insanely rich. I know people with NAS of HDDs for a total 32TB or more.
@@brenlouissurio2404 Storage demands for gaming haven't changed that much since 2015, which has allowed SSD to catch up to HDDs. These days, you can get SSD storage for 3x or 4x the price of HDDs, not to mention most game assets are about to shrink to half the size since there won't be duplicate data everywhere.
A 2 TB SSD sets you back around $160, and is all you will realistically need for storage the next 10 years. :) Add to that NVMe boot drive and 4xNVMe x16 PCIe expansion cards, and you're looking at all the fast storage you will ever need in your PC.
“eww dust” doesn’t clean the dust out
so the comparison btwn this and the "new" $500 rig is more dramatic, visually, haha.
You can literally hose a PC case out and let it dry in the sun. They could then have given it a $2 black rattle can paint job haha
Ruthless economy, my friend
Josh L yah but like wiping out dust with your hands is free
Lunchos El Maximus . Is it worth the $2?
Dust is definitely no issue if we're talking side of the road edition cases, i picked up an old phenom II x4 955, 4gb ram and 320gb hdd i found on the sidewalk while walking my dog and the day prior it rained all over the case so there's definitely worse things to go with, still managed to clean it up and make it work just fine before the case rusted and fortunately the rain water didn't make it to any of the internal parts because it was placed under a tree so it didn't get very soaked to begin with, pretty lucky find lmao it made for a sweet htpc with emulation capabilities after i threw in an old hd 6850 i had lying around (which i replaced for a r7 360 that didn't require a 6pin connector and ran cooler and quieter), mid-high end pc from 2012 still putting up a good fight in 2021

@@LatvianVideo It wasn't their'd to sell so only fair. Technically you can't sell something another person bought even if they are in the family. Just most families aren't jerks enough to take someone to court on that.
