I've been trying to learn C4D over the last month or so, and as a newbie, I greatly appreciate these tips! I've seen the layers panel, but had no idea what it did. Thanks for teaching us, it's such a useful feature!
Strangely I did not see the Layers tab in the default layout so I added it myself by using Ctrl/Cmd + C and entering Layer, you'll find it there. I put it under the attributes window and fixed it there since I use it all the time.
This is something I've been wanting to pay more attention to as a new user (2 years). I think it's probably the best way to get the frame rate up because I'm finding that C4d is one of the worst 3d apps I've ever seen performance-wise. I love it overall but after about 10 minutes of building a scene it can feel like trying to do sprints while waist deep in mud. The only way I can get a little more performance is to keep things in layers and turn off generators and deformers.

Great introduction to layers, but I think showing how layers can organize a complex scene would be even more helpful.
