Yes first met her about 40years,when both our families were young,we've been boat 46yrs,see it when the canals were starting to change, and some filled in,then things started getting better (fabulous)now it's changed again, enjoy every day .
You really are the master of multi-tasking. It's impressive. How you on earth did you get under that low bridge, not hit your head, make it look like we were inches from the brickwork filming it AND steer in a straight line? Winner!
The real time quality of that video was a real treat. After watching vlog after vlog with speeded up sections ( typically lock movements) the actual timescale of canal cruising gets lost. I was happy to subscribe on the strength of the insight into the day in, day out details of your cruising lifestyle. Many thanks and well done.
Really enjoyed this vlog. I think a couple of the reasons why I enjoy your channel is because of the interesting scenery. Like I mentioned before, this is the England I would like to see, the small towns with their cottage style homes and warm friendly pubs, it's how I envision all of the UK to be. Second reason why is because of the nice people you have introduced us to. Down to Earth, friendly folks who take pride in their town, pub and narrowboat channel. Reminds me of my friends parents, she Irish, he English, good salt of the Earth friends.
Fantastic glad I could make something you could get your teeth into Paul, I just felt inspired by the miniature scale of the canal and the challenge of making a full vlog out of it!!
Great video. I loved the beginning shot through the planks on the bridge, I assume! I hardly think a lazy git could survive this lifestyle but showing this in almost real time gives viewers a feel of the effort involved in life on a narrowboat. I loved the work involved in narrowboating and find living in a house effortless and lazy by contrast. Sadly my husband hated the effort involved. It’s interesting that I loved it on our boat but hate housework and the other mundane tasks associated with living in a house. Thanks as always for sharing your adventure.
Thank you for watching Sylvia - interesting the difference between house and boat. Conversely I find it much easier to do the washing up/laundry in my girlfriend’s house (the joys of not having to worry about running out of water!!)
Great vid... even with the 'mild peril' of that one handed ladder work.. Yay!!! Kings Lock for pub of the week... and opposite used to be Malts chippy.. that would most probably be chippy of the week.... even tho its been renamed for many years...The locals still refer to it as Malt's Chippy today.
Excellent choice of PotW - I'm new to your channel so I'm not sure if you've ever done the Middlewich Folk & Boat Fest. I always plan my visits to end at the King's Lock, where they operate an additional real beer bar in a marquee during the fest. Hadn't realised it till I saw your vid, but I've walked the entire length of Britain's shortest canal! 😆
We did that stretch before a good many years ago and never realised that we've been on the shortest stretch of canal in the country. There again from what I recall we did it in torrential rain and just wanted to get going (never even stopped at the pub). This brought back a lot of memories, thank you for that.
That was a fun video,. I was thinking about you today, I went walking on an old disused rail line that used to be a canal and while looking off the side of the trail I spotted the remnants of a winding hole in Southington Connecticut. I had to wonder how many people walked that section of trail and looked at that bit of water and thought it was strange that there was pond connected to the river with a wall to keep the pond in and didn't immediately think this might have been a winding hole let alone known what a winding hole is.
Yup, brings back memories of doing the Four Counties Ring a couple of years ago. We were coming up from Stone and joined the very tail end of a traffic jam at Kings Basin. Apparently a boat had sunk in Wardle lock and pretty much jammed the T&M and the Middlewich Branch, the day before. We only had to wait for about six boats, so we had crew on the bridge side to mark our place, then warped the boat over to Kings and used the water point! I've never driven a narrowboat single handed and I keep trying to visualise how I would do it, if I had to. I'm not sure about those lock ladders at the best of times and now I'm seventy-three, I would have to think of an alternative. I think stopping or slowing right down as the boat enters the lock, stepping off with the centre line and pulling it in mandraulically would be my plan. I love to see you guys when you meet up with other vloggers and it looks like there's a time warp between Mark and Fran and you? They were in Leamington Spa only a few hours ago! Thanks for an interesting vlog of your massive, Wardle Canal undertaking.
Nice bit of canal and a tight turn, I saw what you did there. Try a bit of reverse when you come out of a lock to stop the boat and you don't have to tie it while you shut the gate. Takes a bit of practice but you soon get the hang of it especially on a long flight where it can save you lots of time. And it looks good if your being watched.... 😎
I like these wee videos. Makes me feel I'm really there. I need to get a holiday booked. Struggling to persuade anyone to help me because the weather has been so bad recently but hopefully soon. I usually manage at least 2 per year. Llangollen and Staff and Worcs last year.
Nice one Robbie! In all the canal vlogs I've watched, I've never seen anybody film themselves climbing a lock ladder before - quite a feat, with rope and windlass!
Great vlog as always. We moored on the Trent and Mersey and walked along that canal a couple of years ago to see the breach but didn't know about the Wardle. Thanks Robbie looking forward to the next one, keep on Cranking it
Yes, the only place where you can sail from one canal, along the full length of another and onto a third, and your tea is still hot. Nice to see you are back in the north west, where canals all began (in the UK anyway) - lets have some more vlogs soon. Or was this recorded a while ago - your last vlog had you on the Calder and Hebble, and that would be a record-breaking journey in a week.
Thanks John. Yes hopefully you can tell by the flowers/trees/me in shorts that the last one was indeed from the summer! Sometimes I get inspired and try and film one in a day but always takes at least a week to edit😅
I was forced to 'moor' on the Wardle when, after preparing the lock and returning with my boat from around that sharp bend, I found someone had closed the gates and started filling it, effectively 'stealing' the lock from me! Had to climb up on that high bank to hold the boat out of their way while they exited. They did apologize (maybe they were Canadian too?).
Wow, talk about multi tasking going up the lock ladder, though your lav mic cable was going to throw a spanner in the works. How did you pull focus at the end of your intro clip? some sort of BBC dark magic I assume😳 Amazed at 14 mins when you tied naughty lass to your phone rig🤣, light boat or heavy phone😂. informative and entertaining as usual 👍
Ha ha you’ll never know! My secrets will go to the grave with me! Honestly I just stick my iPhone wherever I think might be interesting peering down through a bridge / on top of a bollard and that’s it!!
Hi Rob Very short indeed I only live about 5 miles away in Northwich. I'm seriously considering buying a narrow boat for my retirement I've just got to get my health sorted out. I've been on a narrow boat trip in the 80s and cruised fro. Anderton Marina to Birmingham and back, really enjoyed it and would love to get back on the canals. Your doing a great job there especially on your own. Thanks for the vlog Stay safe and keep well. John.
2:35 - a whole 3 secs of engine running - but at least yours (unlike CHG) is running on both cylinders. I suspect the tickover is faster than it need be. I'm thinking half that speed BUT do ensure it's still fast enough for the alternator to provide a good charge voltage.
Thanks for walking us through the process. Lots of little tricks I have not seen on other narrowboat videos. Question: how often do you slip up and get wet?
Good choice for PotW RC. Few great ones awaiting you at Lymm. Wave at the Aquaduct Marina for me. I spent an 'enjoyable' 24hrs replacing my macerator toilet moored up there a couple of months ago. As you know, raw sewage in narrowboats is such a joy. (I don't really mean 'joy') Marina was very helpful
nearly forgot yer phone again! lol nice small vid of a small canal... or maybe a ca as its so small?! lol pub looked great... description was bril too (always are!) travel safely (and not too much of the olde fish n chips... unless they are excellent! hmm, takeout of the week! lol)
They're not thinking "That guy with the camera, what a weirdo", they're thinking "Isn't that the guy off the telly?" Middlewich Chippy... a canalside fave.
Love this video having done this short canal twice. Why do you not use a windlasses harness on your belt? I had a good crew and we flew through locks. We are getting a bit beyond locking now so we may have done our last canal. I hope not. I grew up on the Bridgewater and think the canal water got in my veins. Have you done many canals in the south of England? Please keep cranking it.
Thanks you Paul I don’t use holder because they don’t work for me not secure enough have lost windlass before from them I’ve done almost all of them yes but plenty yet to explore as well
I could just see myself Robbie, the expression on your face just trying to suss out what to do next, on the lock. Since moving up north (from Suffolk to Derbyshire), I have found people are more friendly, willing to talk to you, have you noticed that? Good to see you with Fran & Rich, I think I have driven past their old home in Norfolk, a good few times on farm deliveries. Norfolk / Suffolk means people North /South as is Sex means way as in Essex/ Sussex/Wessex. as village's that have Black/White where defined by the plague
Interesting - yep, Northerners are generally more open but then so are some southerners too I guess. But maybe the plague made people more closed off who knows!!!
I think you got all the interest there was to get out of 47 metres of canal Robbie! There was some sneaky editing there, especially getting around the turn, and when you appeared at both ends of the boat at the same time, I had to check what was in my glass!? Hey Robbie, totally enjoying your vlogs. I watched one of your earlier ones on filming with phones and iPad. You spoke of another vlog on recording but couldn’t find it. Do you have a link, cheers 🍻 thanks, Derek
Hi Robbie m8 hope you are ok ,how is the girlfriend ,interesting video of how to do things on your own ,is they any news of a new tv show ? Would be nice sure is a short canal nice to see Fran and Rich in the pub with you poor old Rich ,,always enjoy your videos keep them coming Robbie take care keep safe,John
Hi John thanks for asking, yep gf and I just celebrated 8 months of going out (and 4 months of potty training with her little one!) and I’m due to start filming the next series at the end of this month!!
We really enjoyed this vlog, it brought back memories of when we cruised through there last autumn. Is it my imagination or has your film quality improved over the last year? Looking forward to the next one. 😀
Thank you Geoff very kind - if it has I imagine it’a a direct result from working with the BBC and using the latest iPhone (11 Pro at time of writing!!)
That was fun! Your vlogs always make me happy. Do you hand-write your titles yourself? I love the Pub of the Week title. You always go the extra mile for us! ^_^
Hi Robbie Just a layman thinking aloud, but would it be worth attaching a strap to the windlass so you can hang it around your neck and leave both hands free when climbing the lock ladders?
Crap isn’t it. Such an interesting part of the canal network. They do mention it on p.218 of waterways guide 5 (or p.160 of WG6): ‘the first hundred yards or so of this branch is the Wardle Canal’ 100yds = 300 feet making it twice as long as it is!!
Cruised this canal on our first ever canal boat holiday to chester and didn't know it wasn't part of the branch canal until a short time ago . Great pub and even better fish and chips. Oh chester is great if ya not been already.
Because they both go in different directions and were owned by two different canal companies. The lock and extra canal were apparently introduced to charge for passage between
Robbie made the longest video possible about the shortest canal. Floating Our Boat is a great channel!
The 'Pub of the Week' jingle always brings me joy. Always. #stuckinamerica #francrush
Fascinating. Cranking through people's back gardens.
Yes first met her about 40years,when both our families were young,we've been boat 46yrs,see it when the canals were starting to change, and some filled in,then things started getting better (fabulous)now it's changed again, enjoy every day .

Great Video Robbie and thanks for the Shout Out. We will be cruising this way in May!
You’re welcome! I’ll be somewhere near Wolverhampton then but hopefully our paths will Cross one day!
Another fascinating slice of "canal life as it really is" from young Robbie. Keep 'em coming please ! 😎👍👍
that was fun! You certainly are a man of many talents - climbing a ladder, carrying a windlass and filming all at the same time. Great video Robbie.
It's really nice to see some real-time footage :D I'd love to see some more longplay bits of canals, you get a really nice feel for them
That was fun, informative and great to see Fran and Rich. Good viewing :)
Thanks!
I've now completed the viewing of 90 of your vlogs
Lovely Vlog Robbie
Keep cranking it was lovely to see Richie and Fran ❤️👍🏻

Excellent real time footage enjoying the locks! Really like when you meet up with other vloggers too!
Thanks for risking life, limb and dignity for us Robbie. I once lost a phone climbing out of a lock so keep a tight hold mate.
It's not being lazy when there is only you doing the locks, its experience that's all, I have picked up a few pointers too thank you for your vlog.
Ahh cheers Adrian!
Yes! I made the book cheers Robbie, I have had the worst day imaginable and this has made me happier. Keep up the great work man.
That’s awesome! You’re welcome mate and thanks again for Patreonising!

Fenders Robbie!!!
I know I know. They didn’t cause me any problems and I can’t be arsed with taking them in all the time!
Been a while since your last vlog. Great to see you back.
Lovely friendly pub.
Ah Old Mill Brewery - nothing like a solid ale with an illustration of a terrifying man on it.
Excellent choice of PotW - I'm new to your channel so I'm not sure if you've ever done the Middlewich Folk & Boat Fest. Yup, brings back memories of doing the Four Counties Ring a couple of years ago. We were coming up from Stone and joined the very tail end of a traffic jam at Kings Basin. Great Vlog again Robbie. Thank you 👌
I ducked as you went under that bridge! 😆
Another good video.....informative yet funny and light hearted....very watchable.
Thanks Keith appreciate that 👍
Dorset Knob biscuit tin Robbie, what a hard biscuit it is ,been to the shop in Dorset many a time .Definitely recommend a visit ,problem is no canal.
I like these wee videos. Makes me feel I'm really there. I need to get a holiday booked. Struggling to persuade anyone to help me because the weather has been so bad recently but hopefully soon. I usually manage at least 2 per year. Llangollen and Staff and Worcs last year.

Great vlog as always. We moored on the Trent and Mersey and walked along that canal a couple of years ago to see the breach but didn't know about the Wardle. Thanks Robbie looking forward to the next one, keep on Cranking it
Yeah it’s v easy to miss as you can imagine!!
Great too see you back it’s been a while thanks
Lovely to see you survived the inclement weather, great vlog again looking forward to this coming year , keep on cranking it!!
I love that canal and area. Really great video
Thank you Chris yeah it’s a great place to moor up
Fun you guys know each other...caught their boat right away : ) Thanks !!
Love the real time matey👍 great new style 😀😀
That pub is good! Nice to see another vlog from you.
Cheers Ben!

love the ghostly effect at 13:15 and also how pub of the week has its own logo now🙃 great vlog👍🏻
Thanks Bex always on the branding that’s me!!
All the best, friend! Great little video.
I'll be buying my boat at the end of summer all being well. Nothing flash, just an old narrowboat that feels right and needs a bit of work.
Wow, talk about multi tasking going up the lock ladder, though your lav mic cable was going to throw a spanner in the works.
How did you pull focus at the end of your intro clip? some sort of BBC dark magic I assume😳
Amazed at 14 mins when you tied naughty lass to your phone rig🤣, light boat or heavy phone😂.

Hi Rob
Very short indeed
I only live about 5 miles away in Northwich.
I'm seriously considering buying a narrow boat for my retirement I've just got to get my health sorted out.
I've been on a narrow boat trip in the 80s and cruised fro. Anderton Marina to Birmingham and back, really enjoyed it
and would love to get back on the canals.
Your doing a great job there especially on your own.
Thanks for the vlog
Stay safe and keep well.
John.
Thanks John hope your health improves so you can experience living on a boat, everyone should have the chance to give it a go I think.
Another enjoyable vlog. On those ground paddle shots by the vent holes, I was waiting for the water spout action. Take care - be well! Ciao
Always fun! The subtitles in this one were funny too! Cheers!
Ha ha oh dear I need to get onto that!!!
2:35 - a whole 3 secs of engine running - but at least yours (unlike CHG) is running on both cylinders.
I suspect the tickover is faster than it need be. I'm thinking half that speed BUT do ensure it's still fast enough for the alternator to provide a good charge voltage.
Fab vlog robbie. The opening shots were great. Carnt wait till the nxt vlog
Thanks Steve!
Been in the Kings Lock before, they had live music when I visited a few years ago!
Thanks for walking us through the process. Lots of little tricks I have not seen on other narrowboat videos. Question: how often do you slip up and get wet?
Never luckily, but I always try to make sure I’m not taking in too much in one day. I have fallen in but that was in my early days before the vlogs!
Hi Chris - spent Valentines Day with my gf at Lymm, lovely, and thankfully no raw sewage to ruin our weekend!!
Hard work filming on your own! You done a Stirling job....well done 👍
nearly forgot yer phone again! lol nice small vid of a small canal... or maybe a ca as its so small?! lol
pub looked great... description was bril too (always are!)
travel safely (and not too much of the olde fish n chips... unless they are excellent! hmm, takeout of the week! lol)
Cheers Geoff yep been to that chippy twice now!! Naughty
Robbie Cumming ... and the rest 😜 nothing wrong with a good takeout! how about "takeout of the month" lol
They're not thinking "That guy with the camera, what a weirdo", they're thinking "Isn't that the guy off the telly?"
Middlewich Chippy... a canalside fave.
There was a very wonderful lady locker, who has now past away, but she lived there a very long tome,
Do you mean Maureen?
Love this video having done this short canal twice. Why do you not use a windlasses harness on your belt? I had a good crew and we flew through locks. We are getting a bit beyond locking now so we may have done our last canal. I hope not.
I grew up on the Bridgewater and think the canal water got in my veins.
Have you done many canals in the south of England?
Please keep cranking it.
Thanks you Paul
I don’t use holder because they don’t work for me not secure enough have lost windlass before from them
I’ve done almost all of them yes but plenty yet to explore as well
"Pub of the day" more like! 😂
Always enjoyable!
Jesus I thought you had retired!! 😂 safe travels great vlog as always mate
Couldnt be further from the truth! Cheers!
Pushing gates with the boat is fine!
I think you got all the interest there was to get out of 47 metres of canal Robbie!
There was some sneaky editing there, especially getting around the turn, and when you appeared at both ends of the boat at the same time, I had to check what was in my glass!?
Great stuff, keep it up, when’s the new series coming out on the telly?
Thanks Graham yep couldn’t help myself with the editing could i! New series due out start of November (TBC)
Robbie Cumming All we’ve got to do now is find out where you are at the moment, and we may have a clue about where you’ll be on the telly!😄
Graham Westgate Yeah or you could watch carefully in a few of my videos as I do drop hints (or even detail the proposed route in one of them)!
Hey Robbie, totally enjoying your vlogs. I watched one of your earlier ones on filming with phones and iPad. You spoke of another vlog on recording but couldn’t find it. Do you have a link, cheers 🍻 thanks, Derek
Thank you Derek. Recording sound vlog was this one: ua-cam.com/video/mLpsoVFhX5g/v-deo.html
Robbie Cumming arrr brings back memories potty training lol pleased for you all
Robbie Cumming thats good news Robbie more tv Well done
We really enjoyed this vlog, it brought back memories of when we cruised through there last autumn.
Is it my imagination or has your film quality improved over the last year?
Looking forward to the next one. 😀
Thank you Geoff very kind - if it has I imagine it’a a direct result from working with the BBC and using the latest iPhone (11 Pro at time of writing!!)
At 32 locks per mile it's just as well it's only 164' long. Nice to see another vlog from you.
🤔 32 locks per mile...? What’ve you been smoking Al? And can I have some?!!
@@RobbieCumming Yes, extrapolate it out.. As for the other quetions, never you mind and yes you can.
Great to see and hear you again Robbie.
Treat yourself to a windless belt perhaps ?
Keep safe and dry.
They definitely don’t work for me. Dropped at least one from the holster as I was climbing the ladder. Not ideal!! Usually stick it in my belt loop
great vlog as usual
Great to see Fran and Rich (with doggies) pop up on your vid.👍
New catch cover....I say! Neat.
Thank you!
That was fun! Your vlogs always make me happy. Do you hand-write your titles yourself? I love the Pub of the Week title. You always go the extra mile for us! ^_^
Thanks Esther! Worth it just to see your comments :) Yes all the hand drawn stuff is me doodling away on either my ipad or in biro and scanning it in!
Climbing that steep lock ladder and holding yer windlass and filming at the same time.😱
robbie has mad skillz.
It must be nice having your pub of the week beer funded by Patreons.
They wouldn’t want it any other way!?!!
So when do you get around to pumping out the welldeck?
That canal is just right for you then Robbie ,lol]
2:09 Ironically, I just watched the episode where that breaks. 😢
I bet ya it's the shortest in the world too . Cheers from California!
Damn son... posting again... I can get behind this.
Its a shame more time wasn't spent cruising along the Wardle. So much to see.
😂
Hi Robbie
Just a layman thinking aloud, but would it be worth attaching a strap to the windlass so you can hang it around your neck and leave both hands free when climbing the lock ladders?
That’s sounds experimental! Which I like! If I get bored of tucking it in my belt (which is what I normally do) I’ll give that a go!
Is this near Middlewich?
Watch that Health & Safety 😂
Nicholson's 1:550 000 rates the Wardle as not worth mentioning. The Middlewich just bangs into the T & M.
Robbie, that was a nifty bit of editing there. I've never seen the "Ghostly effect" before, is that in iMovie??
I think it’s possible... if you try a long static shot and stretch the transition length somehow you can achieve the same effect
Interesting thanks
At what point does a Short Canal just get called a Lock Pound?
Good question!!
