Christ your Vlogs make me homesick which is weird coz I’ve lived abroad since ‘96 and never missed home before. I grew up near Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union and always wanted to live on a narrowboat. I am slowly convincing my fiance (a yank) to have a holiday or two on one, and my cunning plan is to convince him we should live on one if only for part of the year. Wish me luck on that one. Funnily enough, my home base is the Mosel Valley in Germany which is also a beautiful waterway but it still does not have the same draw as the UK canals which are unique.
If ever you make it back to Sheffield (and it has survived covid) I can recommend the Gardeners Rest. It's just about 5 minutes further up the road from Yellow Arch Studios. It has regular live music nights and there's even a gorilla poetry night with some serious and some hilarious contributions. Most importantly they sell pork pies at the bar.
We did a Running Club, 'Club Mini-Tour' to Sheffield last year and we all really enjoyed it. Great pubs (especially on The Island - yes we did the Fat Cat...), friendly (very drunk) people and easy access (by train) to some great running and walking. Highly recommend.
Great place Sheffield. Did my Uni career there. The Pyjama Jump stays forever engraved in my memory. Must do the canals to have a different view of the city. Sithee lad !
Hi Jane, thank you so much, and great job filming those clips too! Glad you like the video - say hello to Rog for me, unfortunately I lost his details as I am not on Facebook anymore...
Love to see what people think of Sheffield and the little spots they find. Can't beat being able to get out of the city into the peaks whenever you want in my opinion. And so many great pubs! Used to live on London road so spent a lot of time in the Beer Engine. But the Cremorne was our preferred spot (when it was super cheap , a bit of a dive and full of people who hadn't been to bed for a few days). The best pub by far though- The Brothers Arms! Great views of a sheffield sunset skyline. Bit far from the quays mind. And for an even better view head to the top of Meersbrook park first.
Did enjoy your video Robbie. Born and bred in Sheffield, it's a brilliant city. Been through the mill, hard times as steelworks closed but really a great place to be. So glad you enjoyed your visit. And happy you came out to the Peak District where I am lucky to live now. All our area is fantastic, thank you for showing that.
Super city. What a brilliant video. Your commentary and sites visited were superb. Thanks for taking me along, I really enjoyed myself And as if by magic, your bike is back.
Had no idea Sheffield was such a cool place. It’s made a difficult transition from its steel producing heyday. Definitely worth a visit. Thanks, great video with practical tips for the traveller ( laundromat and coffee shop 👍)
It takes flipping ages to add in each one but it's what I'd want to see if I was watching a video like this, so in it goes! Thanks and glad you liked it! 8^)
Great stuff Robbie !! I am in Florida but watch your videos all the time. I hope I can get to England one day. I used to go to France, Spain , Italy all the time for work. I was a Chief Engineer on large power yachts. But those were the good old days and it's been a while.
It was honestly the rawest, friendliest and most authentic gig I’ve ever been to, Freak Genes are my new favourite band, and Thee Mightees song was just pure Sheffield I thought so had to use it (they said it was ok!) Thanks so much for having me and I will definitely look you guys up again if I’m ever back in town!
WOW Robbi the beer engine is a hell of a walk from the marina it's nearly in crookes. That's a big hill but at least it's all downhill back to your boat.
Recently started watching your vlogs this week and love watching them. Very funny and I don't remember Manchester, Leeds or Liverpool looking so nice haha
Ah cheers Lee - well the funny thing is as a Southerner they tell you not to go up north and I think that's just because they've seen it from the motorways side - from the canals it can look and feel completely different. Thanks for watching mate 8^)
Hi Robbie, Love your videos! Happy to see you cranking again. I have a small request please. Would it be possible to offer a brief history of the towns you visit? I'm amazed at all I see in your videos and would like to know more. Odds are against me traveling to your beautiful country so your videos are wonderful to me. Lastly,On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place. Should the summer turn to winter, Your's is no disgrace. :)
Another brilliant video Robbie - probably the best yet! :) Great music and filming as usual. Totally agree with you about having to get out and explore a city to find it's hidden gems (and not expect them all to be right next to the canal - or train station, etc.). Loved' the "Full Monty" reference. Keep up the good work and don't drop the new phone in the water - even if it does have a floaty case! )
Robbie Cumming yep, did a successful float test on Friday and went fairly quick just with pedal power. Need to make a few tweaks but we'll be able to Crank It soon 😀
Ah cheers Rog great to hear from you - not sure how to keep in touch now - perhaps send us an email (on about page) and I'll send number over. Thanks once again for the tour around the moors and pubs it made my trip to Sheffield that much more memorable! 8^)
I'm liking the cut of your jib Robbie . Spent Sunday watching your uploads . If ever you do get onto the "Lanky" canal , check out the "Hand and Dagger" at Salwick near Kirkham or "Owd Nells / Guys Thatched Hamlet" up at Garstang . Keep Cranking it fella . Subbed . Neil Taylor .
Hi Robbie watch a lot of your videos regarding cruising what maps do you use and size are they ie miles to the inch iv seen some but they are small about a5 and with my eyesight difficult to read. keep up with the videos O and yes i live in SHEFFIELD many thanks Viv
These videos are fascinating! I like the way you embrace the local cultures and your warmth is easy to feel through the vids. Though it does sound like a logistical nightmare and not as romantic as people assume :)
That wasn't just a tram...that was SUPERtram :) Should there have been a p on the end of that!? :) The Winter Gardens are fantastic. I stayed in the hotel that is attached to them a few years ago on business. For a minute I thought you were suggesting people should STEAL some souvenirs! Cutler's Hall looks brilliant! I think you'll find there weren't many heads of producers of stainless steel visiting there in the 17th Century though, as stainless steel wasn't invented until the early 1900s! ;) Great vlog as usual Robbie!
Ah well you’ll have to excuse me Ronnie I failed history at school! Hence why I try to avoid it in these vlogs. It’s all made up anyway. Cheers for watching though! 8^)
It's not that important, I'm only just poking a bit of fun. The vlog is fun and entertaining, that's much more important than being 100% factually correct!
ahw it's over already, (just binged al your videos in a day) love your videos. I'm livin' vicariously trough you. I'm a fulltime caravanner from the Netherlands but i'm here too long and in the same place and type of living space, I've had a tipi for 3,5 years and now the caravan for 3 years so i'm thinking about getting a boat or a camper (probably a bureaucratic cluster f*ck over here but probably worth it). between you, theo and bree it's an interesting decission. wish you all the best and maybe we can grap a pint sometime in the future if our paths happen to cross. cheers mate. (excuse my spelling/grammar errors i'm a couple of pints in ;))
Man that's a lot of editing - but a great result. Yes, I agree don't just jump off your boat and expect to have it all in front of you. Take time to explore. Really enjoyed it 👍🏼
Dropping your phone in the canal with all that footage. Oooooohhhhh Robbbbieeee!!!! I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Commiserations mate. Still you seemed to have got past it, so I shall endeavour to do likewise. Another great vliog, see you next time. All the best.
Ive been to Sheffield many times. mainly to the hospital (royal hallamshire) but i do feel the people there are some of the friendliest in the country. Did you go to the crucible?. may be no snooker on, lol some places can get a little packed to when the students are there
SUMMER WINE Narrow Boat Stories you’re spot on about the people. They were so friendly and generous. Got invited to a BBQ on my way in by Martin (widebeam with skeletons), and I hadn’t even got to Victoria Quays! Crucible looks fantastic but I didn’t go inside, not a snooker person (too difficult for me!)
Just working my way through your vids and got to this one, did you try the Dorothy Pax bar actually in the canal basin? It’s a great pub with some really good live music.
Robbie! I was born 3/4 of a mile from Tinsley in 1944! (I pass the flight at Aldwarke on a weekly basis, close to the ASDA) I'm a retired Mechanical Engineer who served his time in the now non-existant steelworks! Please tell me one place in Sheffield where steel is still produced? It may interest YOU to know that around 1974 a town in TAIWAN was renamed Sheffield so that it could stamp "Made In Sheffield" on it's product! Sheffield was reasonable back in the 60's now it is a shithole marginally below it's neighbour Rotherham where I now live????
You forgot to film the spider fighting den in Sheffield. It's not widely known as it's down a dark alleyway in the city centre. You go in and for twenty quid you get to fight a giant spider. This spider was caught in the Amazon rain forest in the late 1960s. It's the same size as a cow and is very aggressive. If you beat the spider you win ten million quid but so far everyone who has had a go have been eaten alive. One entire family was devoured this time last year.
Great video Robbie as usual. I Was wondering about the picture behind you at the end. Who is the artist? Keep up the good work and always remember just have fun. Regards Colin
Ah now there's a story here Colin... are you sitting comfortably?! It's a print of a painting by legendary Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough, commissioned to celebrate the reopening of the Sheffield Basin aka Victoria Quays back in the 80s/90s. One day I saw Mr Scarborough just walking to his boat so I went up to him and said - "Excuse me Mr Scarborough, but I wondered if I could ask you something?" "What is it lad" "I want to send a postcard to My Aunt - a scene like the one I saw you painted for the reopening of the Sheffield basin." "Pop by me boat in the next ten minutes and I'll give you a print if ye like. Next ten minutes mind cos I want t' have a nap after that." And true to his word when I went to see him he handed me this very print, didn't want anything for it, and then he went back down into his boat as I hear him yawn and say 'and so to bed'. He's almost 80 and a respected artist so it didn't feel right filming him. But yeah, I just stood there gobsmacked on the towpath, looking at this amazing piece of art, which he had said was the last copy left. The Sheffield mooring manager Paul told me the prints were rescued by Joe just before they were to be thrown in the bin by British Waterways, who commissioned it for the reopening. It was probably nothing to Mr Scarborough but for me this little act of generosity put the icing on my trip to Sheffield.
Looks like lots going on in that city. What the heck is The Norfolk Knife? Looks like you wouldn't need any other weapon than that to defend the entire town form invading hordes..
Ha ha! Yep - the Norfolk knife - named after the street where the factory was based on Norfolk street, and wikipedia says it was a huge penknife made for the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace (London) in 1851.
Ha ha yes Fred I should have!! Ha ha! To be honest I'd put iMovie under enough strain at that point... going to change to a different programme soon so I can auto add canned laughter every 30 seconds. 8^D
Well for the sanity of every one. Just do it once. Of course I have not seen life on the cut the Musical yet. So there is idea you can dwell on when you are stuck in the ice and have run out of beer
Great vlog. So much to pack in from Sheffield I take it your not a sports fan though. No mention of the two rival football teams or the Crucible theatre home of snooker
Well spotted Mark! Definitely not a sports fan - wouldn’t want to get into the rivalries etc and snooker I find really hard to play and watch. Having said all that it was interesting to find out about Sheffield FC being the first football team.
Yep sorry cos its going to be closed from kiverton to chesterfield for quite a while yet. Work was flying along even the totally missing section at Renishaw was all planned and then the govt announced the plans for HS2 and it went slap bang through the canal at almost the same elevation. So massive set back but it's been all the way to the lords and the railway guys have been told they have to make provisions for the canal. So another pair of expensive locks to go under the railway. I'm not sure of the timeframe but I live near the canal and work has started again.
Hi...stumbled into your channel earlier this week...trying to catch up....at some point I may do something similar here in the US but in a motorhome....love the pub of the week....sent you some beer money via paypal in US funds-hopefully that won't cause a problem....keep on cranking.
Hiya Graham! Funds, in whatever denomination, are always gratefully appreciated at the mo, and I’m just really glad you like the channel. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours, let me know when it’s up and running! 8^)
Robbie,,,,,my Mrs and I love the videos and we are on catch up mode. We live in Japan and my Japanese wife was amazed that you would consider eating a Koi!!! Man it is just bones and gristle!! Japanese food is the best in the world.... but carp! I am a man who has eaten Cod sperm,,,,,,She mad me officer!!! Carp, no way... I did explain that it was merely a joke,,,but she did mutter,,,,you British under her breath a few times!! Many Japanese do eat them,,,my wife bless her, doesn't!! As always, very entertaining video, thank you.
Don't like Sheffield anymore , i don't class it as my hometown now , it's changed that much , only time I go through Sheffield is when I'm going to meadowhell lol . I much prefer to live here in Derbyshire. It's just a pity that the canals are so narrow , I'd love to have a boat over here .
WONDERFUL 😀😊 Never been to Sheffield, in 'my former life in the UK'! Thanks so much fot the insight, from an ex pat😊 Watch out, my dear, otherwise I will 'beam myself over'😆😅😅 All love, and best wishes, Claire, Berlin, Germany 😊 😙
I don't live there but whenever i did i always liked Sheffield...No.... Loved it! A stagger pub is a must, on logistics alone.! ;) No bread & dripping? ;O ;(
If you had visited Portland Works (the home of stainless steel cutlery) while you were in Little Sheffield, you would know that there wasn't a stainless steel industry in the 17th Century.
Great video. Is the pub of the week dog friendly? I doubt he’d like the music but he wouldn’t get to try if it’s not dog friendly. I can’t be the only boater with a dog and you were out walking a dog so I thought I’d ask! When it comes to my pub of the week this is critical. Thanks.
Thanks Sylvia - that’s a good point, loads of people have dogs so I’ll bear that in mond for the future - I’m going to say yes (they don’t serve food and hell, it’s a dive bar!) but I didn’t see any in there at the time...
1:18 I don't understand why councils don't make more of these water fronts. Water attracts people and making these waterfronts more attractive will generate money.
I assure you the engine is fine having recently putting it through a full service, valve clearances etc all fine - it’s just a loud engine, and I love it! It takes a huge amount of time to cruise the network whilst trying to hold down two jobs so just be patient sir! 8^)
Another laundrette of the week! hooray! I always thought they should be combined with bookshops and/or libraries. Do women outnumber men there? unlike pubs as far as I know.
Christ your Vlogs make me homesick which is weird coz I’ve lived abroad since ‘96 and never missed home before. Cool thanks for the comment and hope you realise that dream one day! I think everyone should at least have the chance to have a go at least. 8^)
Thee Mightees....what a great band, thanks for the introduction
If ever you make it back to Sheffield (and it has survived covid) I can recommend the Gardeners Rest. It's just about 5 minutes further up the road from Yellow Arch Studios. So lovely to have you visit our steel city Robbie. Great walking with you on the moors. We love Sheffield... you did us proud. Big Hugs. Jane. Xxxxxx
Hi Jane, thank you so much, and great job filming those clips too! Glad you like the video - say hello to Rog for me, unfortunately I lost his details as I am not on Facebook anymore...
Robbie Cumming awww will do Robbie. Stay safe. Xxxxxxx
Without a doubt, yours are the most entertaining narrowboat videos on YT Robbie. They get better each time.
Thanks John very kind! 8^)

Once again great blog lots of interesting content! I am jealous I would love you live for most of the year.
Had no idea Sheffield was such a cool place. It’s made a difficult transition from its steel producing heyday. Definitely worth a visit. Thanks, great video with practical tips for the traveller ( laundromat and coffee shop 👍)
An awesome video. Sheffield is interesting. Thanks Robbie.
Fewer vlogs from u these days, I get withdrawal symptoms ... Good to see you again x
Cheers Andy, well this was a difficult one due to other commitments/technical difficulties but there should be more sooner than later hopefully!
beautiful riff
Which one did you like? I can't take credit for all of the songs this time! 8^)
starts at 12.20
oh i seeeeeeeeeeeeee 'pink poison'
Ah that’s cool, well that one is by a band I saw called ‘Thee Mightees’ - great lads - see description for the streaming link 8^)
Had to put this one on the big screen, thanks for putting the maps up to show where you are. Great job two thumbs up.!!!
It takes flipping ages to add in each one but it's what I'd want to see if I was watching a video like this, so in it goes! Thanks and glad you liked it! 8^)
Never been to Sheffield, but I now feel as though I have.... what a great vlog! Crank it long time 👍
Cheers David glad you liked it! 8^)
Excellent tour of the pubs, I must visit the Dove + Rainbow!
That was a wonderful tour around Sheffield. Thank you Robbie. Sue and I have been there a few times and it brought back some lovely memories.
Ahh really did it? That’s lovely. Thanks you two for all your support 8^)
A long time coming but well worth the wait, cheers Robbie.
Hey thanks for the patience Andy glad you're still with us! 8^)
You're part of my research team, will be doing it myself in the not too distant future, cheers mate.
Robbie! I loved this video! My old stomping ground...I have had many a ‘life experience’ in Sheffield. I can’t wait to come home and visit by boat!
Ha ha cheers! I know what you mean, what a city! Hope this boaters guide helps!
Great video, we really enjoyed it. I'm from Sheffield originally (living down south) so extra special - thanks
That's great! Thank you!
Great stuff Robbie !! I am in Florida but watch your videos all the time. I hope I can get to England one day. I used to go to France, Spain , Italy all the time for work. I was a Chief Engineer on large power yachts. But those were the good old days and it's been a while.
Awesome, thank you! Canal boat should be easy for you then!
Nice to see you doing the hard yards to find the pub of the week. Best not to decide until you've tried them all...or most of them at least! :)
Exactly! Cheers Dean! 8^)
Hey! Glad you got to experience some shows at Delicious Clam! Really enjoyed the video, look forward to some more in the future!

Recently started watching your vlogs this week and love watching them. Very funny and I don't remember Manchester, Leeds or Liverpool looking so nice haha

Thanks for showing us all the rock pubs, now we know which ones to avoid!
What a really cool song by the Mightees! I loved the way Robbie played the song as background to video footage. It played like a cool music video.

Brilliant loved your tour of Sheffield. Your a lovely guy who seems to get on with just about everyone. 🐈
Wow thanks! Well I always try to be friendly to people, listen to them and generally not being a dick but y’know beer helps too I guess....! 8^)
These videos are fascinating! I like the way you embrace the local cultures and your warmth is easy to feel through the vids. Though it does sound like a logistical nightmare and not as romantic as people assume :)

Of all the places I've lived in, Sheffield is the one I'd most like to return to.
Me too! I really miss the company and the ale!
Great video, and since your in the area, you should give the Huddersfield narrow canal a go, it's a gem ;)
Hi Jacob, well I’m not in the area any more but that one is definitely on my list - good excuse to come back! Thanks for the tip! 8^)

Nice one Robbie keep em coming matey
Ah thanks Gary! 8^)
one of your best video
Thank you it definitely took the longest time to make! 8^)
Was hoping for another little cooking segment, some Sheffield speciality. Next time then?
Ha ha yeah well I did film a special bit on Hendersons relish as they make it in Sheff but I lost the footage! Next time perhaps!

One day I saw Mr Scarborough just walking to his boat so I went up to him and said - "Excuse me Mr Scarborough, but I wondered if I could ask you something?"
"What is it lad"
"I want to send a postcard to My Aunt - a scene like the one I saw you painted for the reopening of the Sheffield basin."
"Pop by me boat in the next ten minutes and I'll give you a print if ye like. Next ten minutes mind cos I want t' have a nap after that."
And true to his word when I went to see him he handed me this very print, didn't want anything for it, and then he went back down into his boat as I hear him yawn and say 'and so to bed'.
What a great story Robbie. Thanks for sharing. Take care now and have a great weekend. Colin
Great video, love the music. Who the hell uses lipsalv they found in a gents toilet?
Pip Parker ha ha I thought the same ya not really gonna chance using that lip salve , yuk
Hahaha... I was just about to ask about the Lipsalv, even if I'm a year late.
OMG check out the tailgater at 2.50 you cant even escape them on the water, I think its called Sterngating on the water
It was just my locking buddies Harriet and Simon - not 'sterngating' (love it!) at all, I was just slowing down for the lock in front of us!
Spooky. I watched the Dambusters earlier today and bought a drone.
Ha ha! Awesome comment X^D
You should have tried the Canned Laughter. On your Leek Pun :P still was a good watch even if one of the hands are bent :)
Hi Robbie I cant wait till the chesterfield canal and marina finally gets finished you'll have to come for a pint :)
Hey MrJimbaloid! I’m not sure when I can get to the Chesterfield canal - it’s closed at W Stockwith until the end of the month!
Ah poops, never mind, will make it there one day!
Nice one, well done.
Ah cheers Mike 8^)
I want to invite you to a Christmas party are you still off Facebook? what's the best way to get in touch?
Thanks for watching! I’ve never tried carp before. I’ve heard it’s well liked by Polish families though!
Music at 6.40?
‘Rise Above’ by Kill Roy - a band I played drums in, unreleased
How much video can you record in one go on your phone, do you need a sd card?
My new phone has 256GB of storage but I transfer the files to the Macbook pro every now and then.
Nice video looked like you had a great time.
Thanks for sharing, Chris
Thanks Chris, and thanks for your patience ha ha!
Great video keep up great work
Leak on the canal 🙄 good one 😂
Awesome another "not to go to spot" on my map... ahh only joking. Always fun to watch!
Ha ha cheers Gary!!
Excellent, Mate! Keep Cranking.
Thanks - and cheers for the pint(s) George! 8^)
What a good video?? .... Hope the 'Sheffield Tourist Board' put you on their expenses sheet Robbie :-)
Good idea I shall prepare an invoice immediately!! 8^)
i'm loving it
Cheers! 8^)
Bye the way... I really liked this guided tour around Sheffield
Thanks Rolf kind of you to say
WONDERFUL 😀😊
Never been to Sheffield, in 'my former life in the UK'!
Thanks so much fot the insight, from an ex pat😊
Watch out, my dear, otherwise I will 'beam myself over'😆😅😅
All love, and best wishes, Claire, Berlin, Germany 😊 😙
You'd be very welcome I'm sure! Thanks Claire! 8^)
I'm sorry to break it to you, but I walked past Mr Bubbles yesterday, and it appears to have closed down.
DAM! That looks good.
Nice 1 Robbie, thnx
Hope u hav a gr8 2018 x
Cheers
I don't live there but whenever i did i always liked Sheffield...No.... Loved it!
A stagger pub is a must, on logistics alone.! ;)
No bread & dripping? ;O ;(
Tried it in Doncaster for the firts time! An acquired...taste?!!!
Hi Rob
What is your mine work to earn a living
Kind Regards
Stewart William
Hi Stewart, I work part time for a Public Relations agency. Keeps me bobbing about anyway 8^)
get video Robbie some lively places, boat engine sound a bit clangy ! why dont we see you on the other parts of the net work regards paul
Yep spot on!
