Proud to be a Yorkshire lad (1943).Miss my Mum , have done my whole life. She died when I was 4. The scenery brings all the feelings back. Thanks Robbie.
Yorkshire - Gods beautiful country. I lived in York and Leeds from the mid to the late 70s. So happy you liked it. I enjoyed the journey to Skipton very much. We hired a narrow boat from a yard in Gargrave in 1974 and did the same trip you are doing. Great video
I did that trip in reverse, many years ago. We hired a boat in Skipton. Did the round trip in 8 days. Never got the chance to own a narrowboat which I always wanted to do. However at 61 now and living in Florida that dream will never be fulfilled. So I get my narrowboat fixes through you. Funny story. About a year ago my wife (American) and I traveled to England. While touring we passed somebody's garden that had a narrow boat in it. My wife commented to me.... " look Ian, there is one of those skinny boats you keep talking about" Well I thought it was funny.
Thanks Robbie for this brilliant journey. It has got to be one of the most enjoyable trips with such picturesque northern scenery. It is an oasis of joy. Like a mirage.
Another fantastic video Its good to see people are moving about on the waterways even when the weather is damp and cold. Loved the misty early morning shots.
Another top production Robbie....cannot believe how much canals and canal boats have taken over my life. And what's even stranger is that everybody else is so interested.
Cheers! I know, I think it's because it's something that is entirely doable but is still quite mad. Plus Timothy West and Prunella Scales have got a lot to answer for 8^D
Really enjoyed this post... our house overlooks the niff swing bridge from Carleton in craven.. I come from east London. and we relocated here lock stock and barrel.-6 months ago and we've found it to be just the best.allround place to live . Love your posts. regards Dave 😁👍👍👍👍
Nice! I've been travelling around alot (still missing most places...). When I've been talking about what I've seen people ask me if there really was anything to see? My answer is" Yes its allways something to see that you can't see anywhere else". Just as you tell us in these vlogs. I love them!
It Is a nice town is Skipton - We visit 3 to 4 times a month ! - it is a expensive spot ! Always has been since our good old Uncle ! - Uncle John used to take us at weekends back in the 70's ! - God how old am I ? -I used to take my kiddies & now they take me ? Sometimes we go the record bar with a couple of mates of mine for a few beers & to flick through their record boxes see what goodies they have for sale in their vinyl dept ! All the very best Robbie you take care !
Fantastic scenery ( apart from the wreck ) . Feel that I am on the boat with you but luckily without having to help on the locks. Oh and I'm learning noting the white marker on the bridge when you went under it lol
Cheers Craig! Nice to hear that too as I always try to speak to the camera as if all of you lot are right there with me! Although not literally as it would be a bit of a squeeze 8^D
Love Yorkshire! Used to be often around the Harrogate area! Was really gorgeous, in those days, and am, as always, enjoying your videos! As far as locks are concerned, however, reminds me of an incredibly disastrous story from my cousin ( no name mentioned!) Years ago, she and her partner hired a narrow boat, to explore the canals of Yorkshire. Unfortunately, they didn't secure the boat when in a 'rising' lock, and it moved backwards, got stuck in the lock gates, as the water poured in, and, um, sank😕😐 Mega whoops😤
Watched this because I was recently on a day boat in this area. Glad the pubs were to your liking - unlike us northerners, who you continually make negative comments about!
@@RobbieCumming well, in quick succession you expressed reservations about your security in Blackburn and Burnley, and then you said Skipton people were unfriendly. Granted there are a few undesirables around, but I'm sure you know us northerners are warm hearted and friendly - well, us Lancastrians anyway, can't speak for that there funny lot who live the wrong side of our eastern border. :) It took 4 of us plus a bunch of bystanders to work out the bridges, so I was interested how you dealt with locks single handed. BTW I like the traditional look you've retained on your boat. Keep up the good work.
Pam Bromley I don’t know you Lancastrians you’re very sensitive aren’t you! Hope my girlfriend doesn’t hear that though, she’ll give me a thick ear. 😂Thanks Pam will do!
You are The Man! Winter can be hard on a boat - more for the long dark nights as well as keeping that fire going. Make sure you keep some water inside the boat for when the temperature drops and you need that emergency cuppa. Lovin each vlog :)
I know there's a canal from Sheffield to the Trent, goes through worksop, have walked some of it, never far from the pub tho,lol...that's about all,I know of the canals round here.....oh , one through chesterfield looks ok.... Might be the same canal .... I wouldn't know..... Love the footage of the floating delorion car lol....great Volga , keep them coming ...Andy
To Skipton: Those Fall colors! Beautiful. I do miss them. So thanks. That's the time I want to be there. But I fear none will be left when I get to Glasgow early next month.
You're welcome John! Ah yes it will be rather leafless in Scotland v soon if not already. Hope you enjoy your Glasgow trip, I need to go there and check it out one day.
I've just recently discovered your videos after watching the BBC series. We travel to Skipton often and have walked the canal from East Marton to Gargrave after leaving the Penine Way. It's good to see you in our part of the world.
A real nice segment, fog and all. You need to have second sight to navigate in the misty murk. There you are so worried about being trapped by construction. I hate to tell you this as you don’t know it yet, but while you do the things you do, the toilet tank is silently rusting away and will be a nasty surprise in the future.

Another amazing video mate. I've only been to Skipton once. I don't remember going through much of the town, though it looked quite small on our map. What we did do though, was go to a heritage railway that was there.
Ah thanks! I missed that - and the castle - but with it getting dark in the early evening after work was difficult to make time. Cheers for watching 8^)
Thank you! I didn't see that, or the castle which is well known, shame really but nevermind. I get the picture that there was loads I missed, would definitely return
I understand what you're saying about Skipton and it's a pity if that was your welcome to Yorkshire. The locals are great but there are a lot of tourists and it IS a tourist town; warmer welcomes await me owd lad. As for pubs there, didn't you give "The Narrowboat" a visit!
Eyup t'old Love.Hope tha enjoying thy sen in Yorkshire lad. 5 pound for Bingley, thy will need that for them locks. Good Vlog Rob, but Leeds is in ya sight. Tha should give me a shout when ya get here, as a engine sounds like, ball bearings shaking in a tin box t'old Love......Tappets sound like they need adjustment, and i am a boater and a engineer. Lock up ya daughters Rob is on his way.
Ha ha thanks Adrian! Although I need to watch out with you Yorkshire lot don't I? Ha ha! Only joking would be great to get your thoughts on the bearings - perhaps we could do some filming there, be v interesting.
"There's a fog along the horizon A strange glow in the sky And nobody seems to know where it goes And what does it mean? Oh, is it a dream? Naughty Lass, crankin' along with it's exhaust on fire" *Apologies to Art Garfunkel* Great stuff as usual Robbie.
Ha ha brilliant reimagining of Bright Eyes there, love it. Although I would obviously have to put in some thumping beats and electronic nonesense to make it more gen Z friendly 8^D
hi Robbie, you are definitely getting better each time, and I just love the 'pub' of the week in each vblog, We still haven't' found our boat yet, still searching which is very frustrating but I'm sure we will have the right one by April, which is our cut off time. Have you started to use the Gopro yet? oh and thanks for the mention and the add to the crew members, looking forward to more of your adventures.
Thanks Steve, your welcome - yes can be so frustrating but you will find it I'm sure. Go Pro is no go for the mo... still need to buy the battery charger/micro sd card/fittings before I can use it and continuously cruising through the middle of nowhere without an address makes things complicated for ebay/amazon deliveries etc
Coincidence alert! I watched this video about a week ago in between my Apollo Duck trawling. I've just this minute got in after a two day trek to half way between Skipton and Barnoldswick, in fact you missed my new boat at 5:03 as it is moored two boats behind the green one, yes it's mine now and I'm really excited. As it was a Thursday night, and I was staying in Skipton, I ended up in the Cock and Bottle on an open mic night, had the best night in years. The following morning on your recommendation, I dropped into the Sound Bar (love it!) across the road then had a pie in the Pie and Mash place. Our paths will cross one day, look out for NB Proud Tradition, I owe you beer!
Hi there No (what is your real first name?!!!) CONGRATULATIONS and welcome to the cut! What a coincidence indeed. Amazing. I will try and remember your boat - and perhaps I'll see you at some stage in the future! Are you cruising about and living aboard at the moment or staying put until spring?
***** Hi Robbie, I'll be CC in about 2 weeks time but will likely take on a winter mooring as it may be a harsh one. Still clearing out my house selling car etc. doing the running round like a headless chicken thing sorting everything out but it's all full steam ahead. Nick
Hi Debbie, it was the collins waterways guide no. 5 - although they don’t list bridge closures. To sign up to updates on things like that you can do so via your account on the canal and river trust website. Although good luck finding the right page as it’s not very well designed!
Hi Robbie, thanks for the nice vid's. I'm in Christchurch Dorset, what part of Dorset are you from? A vid with some of your background info and where you're heading in life would be interesting to the viewers I'm sure. Please keep the vid's coming :-)
Cheers Howard ok well maybe I will do that when I get to 1k subscribers? I'm from Gillingham (pronounced 'Crap-hole') always wanted to live by the sea though so dead jeal.
Watching this 6 year old video I've noticed two things. Your accent has slightly changed to more northern, and your videos are definitely a lot more slick now!
Nice video! Using the GoPro Camera? A question or two? How much water does the boat draw? I was guessing 2 to 4 feet. and about that "ledge" (that's not what you call it) but the part of the lock that butts out and can catch the boat, Is that on both ends of the lock? I been watching LOTS of videos because my friend Judy and I are thinking about boating there next year, and I already have these fears of getting the boat hung up on that ledge and looking like a real goof ball.
Thanks for the reply. That shallow draft helps, i bet, when parts of the canal need dredging. I have seen some videos of boats plowing through mud, Would hate to have to get out and push. :-)
Hey John great to hear from ya - no Go on the old pro I'm afraid. I'm currently looking for a battery charger, a micro SD card and a chest harness before I can get that going - plus UA-cam are witholding payments until the end of the month 8^( To answer your questions - 1) I don't know but I do get the stern caught up in shallow waters (trick is to keep to the middle as much as possible!) and 2) There is only one cill/ledge in the locks - just below the top gates - so only a worry if you are going down.
Your vlogs keep getting better Robbie. My wife keeps telling me Yorkshire is God's Own County - I wonder where she originates from? Keep them coming. By the way, are we not due another part in the Grand Union series?
Ah! Quite right... I just meant that I'd film more of my travels. Actually, what happened was, I got to Birmingham and thought 'oh christ look how many canals there are and ditched the idea until I got to Runcorn! However I did record lots of footage so I can make some nice 'slow tv' videos if people are interested!
Im from yorkshire n was just gonna post its gods own country lol must be a yorkshire thing forget sometimes the beauty of the area i live till i see these vlogs who needs to go abroad when there so much beauty on our own door step x
I think if you were in London, they would still enforce as otherwise you'd have a glut of boats at one end, but in most cases you'd probably be fine just hanging out until it reopened 8^)
Great video. The engine sounds loud , do you use ear protection ? Maybe that's a ridiculous question 😂 . It's hard to judge how loud something is over UA-cam. Thanks
Thanks - yes sometimes the mic gets too close or I I’m unable to get the sound level right, it’s not too loud irl but can be awkward as it drowns out the sounds of people asking questions from the towpath!! Just smile and nod 😂
@@RobbieCumming I’ve taken a screenshot shot but I can’t send it on here so I’ll try on one of your other social media’s, and love your UA-cam channel thanks for keep posting and like you said in your video I’m a barge life dreamer xXx
I have had a number of narrowboat holidays. The Leeds/Liverpool canal name does not sound particularly wonderful, but believe me it is one of the most beautiful canals in the country. Be warned though, the weather in the pennines can be pretty wild
Thanks for watching Gareth, hope you're enjoying thr adventure so far. The weather can indeed be more than a little changeable - in fact that's the subject of the next vlog, coming soon!
Don't see anything wrong in the name. What a typically ignorant southern comment. What a shame so many English people know so little about their own country.
Do u boat alone.... On the blogs it looks as if u sail alone, but in replies refer to we and us ... Am been nosey... Keep blogging... , most enjoyable..... I would donate, but as an early retiree now, am on a budget .. Lol....
No worries! Yes I am alone but the 'we' includes the vlog supporters, regular viewers and anyone viewing really! It sounds strange perhaps but I always think of you all while I'm filming
Added disadvantage , my partner is well against the boat life.....I love the girls ,narrow boat experiance .... So open and honest....no other guys tho
You're putting me on the spot there! So hard to say - but to generalise, both seem equally friendly to me (even though I'm a southerner!) The difference is I think Lancashire people are much more open, generous and outgoing (bordering on nosey!) and Yorkshire people are much more reserved to the point that they seem unfriendly. But actually after getting to know them, you get the picture that they don't take friendship lightly, it's an investment of trust that needs to be built, and earned - which makes them fiercely loyal friends. A bit deeper reply than you were hoping for perhaps! But people really fascinate me, and I can't help but analyse and celebrate these differences. 8^)
Well, after a busy summer of boats ramming in and out of the locks for example, these structures (some of which are hundreds of years old) need work doing to them. So, in winter when it is less busy the Canal and River trust choose to fix things. And locks etc need removing/replacing sometimes so they usually need to drain the surrounding area so they can have access. Hope that helps dude thanks again for watching
Do you know of anyone who lets others stay on their narrow boat for two or three days say, just to get a taste of the life if thinking of buying one perhaps?
You're a Top Man Robbie, love your programme and your message. For me, it's the best thing on the telly. 🤗🤗✅

Saw you in Burscough but didn't find out about the videos till this week 😁 you iz funny, best boat vlogs I've seen x
Thank you Megan wish I'd said hello! Thanks for watching 8^)
I understand what you're saying about Skipton and it's a pity if that was your welcome to Yorkshire. The locals are great but there are a lot of tourists and it IS a tourist town; warmer welcomes await me owd lad. As for pubs there, didn't you give "The Narrowboat" a visit!
I certainly did! Cheers for watching Rob 8^)
Been watching your videos for a few months. Really enjoy them. Trying to figure out how to watch them in date order.
Hi Clayton, thank you! It should be fairly straightforward - just go to my 'VOYAGE LOGS' playlist - they are all in order there 8^)
Eyup t'old Love.Hope tha enjoying thy sen in Yorkshire lad.
Be only glad to have a look at them 4 you. When do you think you will be getting close to Leeds Rob?
Now that's a problem. Winter stoppages and Bingley 5 rise winter times are throwing a massive spanner in the works...
"There's a fog along the horizon
A strange glow in the sky
And nobody seems to know where it goes
And what does it mean?
Oh, is it a dream?
Naughty Lass, crankin' along with it's exhaust on fire"
*Apologies to Art Garfunkel* Great stuff as usual Robbie.
Ha ha brilliant reimagining of Bright Eyes there, love it. Although I would obviously have to put in some thumping beats and electronic nonesense to make it more gen Z friendly 8^D
That would work even for an old Gen X-er like me :D Cheers Robbie.
hi Robbie, you are definitely getting better each time, and I just love the 'pub' of the week in each vblog, We still haven't' found our boat yet, still searching which is very frustrating but I'm sure we will have the right one by April, which is our cut off time.
Nick
That's great Nick, best of luck and if you need any help just ask any of us boaty people and we will help you out. Hopefully see you out there!
Great video mate, cant wait to see the go pro in action :)
We will have a laugh with that I think!
What was that interesting book you were referring to, the one with the bridge closures, and maps etc?
Hi Debbie, it was the collins waterways guide no. 5 - although they don’t list bridge closures. To sign up to updates on things like that you can do so via your account on the canal and river trust website. Although good luck finding the right page as it’s not very well designed!
Yorkshire lass 😍🙋
Thank you Robbie! (living the dream) Is it possible to send you a Christmas care package to show my appreciation for all your hard work?
Aw Lori that's so cool and totally unnecessary I love it! Will ping over an address soon 8^)
Brill👍😁👏👏👏
"A bit like being at sea with no signal" just like being at sea then, no signal there either, well for the most part.
Ours (60fter) draws roughly 1.5 foot, depends on how much ballast, water, diesel, coal etc you have onboard :)
Thanks JP - what you mean you married one of them?! 8;^D Grand Union series - do you mean more from that canal or another video in the same style?
At the end of your "The Grand Union in 14 minutes" you said "To be continued"
Ah, I understand now. I am up for some slow tv videos. There aren't so many actual cruising vlogs this time of year.
Im from yorkshire n was just gonna post its gods own country lol must be a yorkshire thing forget sometimes the beauty of the area i live till i see these vlogs who needs to go abroad when there so much beauty on our own door step x
If there are stoppages I assume the CRT do not enforce the 14 day continuous cruising rule?
@@RobbieCumming haha, thanks. Yea, a smile and nod usually works well in all situations :-) .
I lived in skipton for a few years. The cock and bottle was my local pub. I also liked the wooley sheep pub.
you should meet up with Cruising The Cut.
Funny you should say that Sam... we literally just did yesterday! Watch out for upcoming clips on his channel.
Hi Robbie could you please tell me the reason/ history behind these 2 tier bridges thank you xXx
2 tier? Sorry Anne was a few years ago this one what are the bridge names and I’ll look it up for you
@@RobbieCumming I’ve taken a screenshot shot but I can’t send it on here so I’ll try on one of your other social media’s, and love your UA-cam channel thanks for keep posting and like you said in your video I’m a barge life dreamer xXx
What a shame so many English people know so little about their own country.
skipton has only recently got touristy and developed an ignorance with it from all the incomers. and yes it is reet proper grim oop t'noorth.
Hey Robbie. Are you ever going to burn those 2 pieces of wood on your boat? (Hamilton, Ont)
Ha ha! Funnily enough I have now burned them both as it's very cold!
You aught to sponsor a pub crawl in a great pub area.
“Where hast tha bin since I saw thee....?”
A fog horn blast should last for six to nine seconds at intervals and shouldn’t exceed more than two minutes. From when I was in the navy
If you did that on the canal you’d get told where to go 😂
@@RobbieCumming safety first Robbie safety first, we don’t wanna a remake of the Poseidon!
Ha ha oh well in that case you will have to convince him!!!
great in the fog
Proper sausage fest in the Sound Bar lol
1:12 😊😊😊.
robbie get a mic pal. levels are a little low at times! otherwise spot on.
also we need a picture of your boss. for science reasons!.
I'm really sorry about that! None of the shops in Yorkshire seem to have any, really struggling but I will make it happen soon I promise 8^)
How many do you want, man, geez!!! Watch no.5 and 9... Our twitter @hornbywhitefoot has some more. Science has a lot to answer for!!!
many thanks! i have now completed some science. (crikey that sounds wrong!. i am not a wrong un' i swear)
who's most friendly yorks or lancs ?
correct answer lol greetings from York :)
Ha ha! Glad I didn't say what I was going to say then... 8;^D
Which ca era are you using
Think it was an iPhone 6
Why do they shut of parts of canal?
Well, after a busy summer of boats ramming in and out of the locks for example, these structures (some of which are hundreds of years old) need work doing to them. So, in winter when it is less busy the Canal and River trust choose to fix things. And locks etc need removing/replacing sometimes so they usually need to drain the surrounding area so they can have access. Hope that helps dude thanks again for watching
what length is your narrowboat?
42ft
Yorkshire people don't waist words ! Ha
And we also spell them correctly lol
Yorkshire... The best place to find out about your failings!
your in 4foot of water
sinking
worry
huh???
Not something I could do on my own.....😔
Ah well I hope you come across someone who can go with you. Hope these vlogs will do for now!
Do you know of anyone who lets others stay on their narrow boat for two or three days say, just to get a taste of the life if thinking of buying one perhaps?

@@RobbieCumming Thanks for the prompt replay and advice Robbie, unfortunately I want to do some work and she seems to have no wi-fi....
Oh I didn’t think of that. How about tethering to your phone? I have a mifi thing from EE that acts as a wifi box.
Just struck me that with all the deadlines and travelling you have, should maybe have found a boat with more horsepower...
If I had the money Tom! One day 8^)
MARCH 2020,I am on facebook , charles lawson ( The ARK )
Skipton is a tourist town with a lot of retirees. Unfortunately manners are left at the Lancashire border.
