Friend of eEuro Kip Moncrief shows us how to do the water pump on his 9-3 wagon. We include all the parts and special tools in our water pump kit, used in this video.

As usual, eEuroparts is not responsible for any damage you do to your car in the process. This is a complicated process, and should always be performed by skilled hands.
Note: A magnetic socket is highly recommended to avoid dropping a bolt when working with the timing tool.

I just got an 04' 9-3 Linear with 120K on it about 8 mos ago. I was thinking I should change the water pump out before I have problems....ummmm, after this, maybe i will take it to a mechanic!

just did this on a 05 9-3 with the full kit from eeuro with the assistance of this video. great info, but must state that you absolutely need to use a magnetic socket with the chain/pulley locking tool.

Old answer, but why is that you need a magnetic socket? Do you remember the size on the socket, looks like 10-13mm?
@@crn_rc it's a 10mm socket, why magnet? so you don't drop it in the timnig cover. or do what i did, unbolt enough so you can hand unbolt them with a piece of magnet in a rubber glove

That looks absolutely brutal. I'm looking because one is for sale cheap. Only needs a water pump lol. I'd do the two o-rings on the water pipe. Even if they are 10 each, I would not want to go back in there for that.
Good job but... You shold try to remove the old pump gears cause it wear and get a little play due to wear. This gears dont brake but loose the exact fit and the pump will rattle. This is common SAAB issue. Cheers.
I had the same thought, I thought the water pump , timing belt 1.6 liter on the chevy aveo was pain until I saw this!

I really wish this video existed when I did the job. this thing was published a few weeks after. it took me 3 days, I sheared a bolt from my turbo and had to buy a used assembly so I replace the side that sheared. I absolutely hate this design on an otherwise solid car.
I was going to do this my self but after seeing what a pain in the ass it is and no lift I will pay someone to do it. Thanks for saving me the headache.

Watched this to see what I paid $1,000 for! What a job.
I was quoted $800 at a shop. Gonna try to find a Mex mechanic who can help me pull the obstacles out of the way and I'll do the pump part myself then track down Mex guy to put pipes back into place when done.
Also got some new hoses to put on, was warned by mechanic the two oil cooler hoses are extremely soft so will take care of those while I'm in there.
Had balance shafts , timing chains and water pump done by RTJ in Stockport - glad i didn’t do it ! intend keeping the car so money and time well spent 👌
Even as a mechanic since 1974, that looks like a proper pain in the a** job, especially if you do not have a ramp.😢. Nice video though.
There iis a drain valve on the water pump, before you remove the big pipe. It was on autoautopsy
Have a balance shaft chain issue - booked in for changing chains and guides and water pump as might as well do whilst it’s all out ! Hopefully will give the engine some longevity ? Had Pcv valve done a few thousand miles ago - car has done 102k
The GM EcoTec motor is nice other than the Water pump. i was a prior SAAB Tech and hated doing this as a warranty job.
Who the heck looked at the cad drawings of this during development and said "yeah, I like this, this is a really good design. Let's make it!"?!?

This is a complete nightmare.
Base on my current mileage of 218k km's, If my water pump goes, I think it would be best to plan for removing the engine complete and for a full overhaul. New clutch, dual mass flywheel, head rebuild with new valves, bearings, cam & balancer chain, guides, turbo, seals.... just not worth doing this much work for a single item when access remains difficult for all future repair work. Others would part the car out depending on condition.

You can remove the water pump without having to remove the exhaust system. Done it many times. It's much easier with the cat out tho
From a 1-10, how much harder are we talking? Is space the only difficulty?
@@shakalpb1164 about 4. Without removing the exhaust the difficult part is the removal of crossover pipe. And barely enough room to get the banjo fittings out and in

You forgot about the 2 long last bolts that hold the water pump on. On the balancing chain side!
A lift and a sizeable garage to fit one is a must. I’m losing coolant and notice on the passenger side a leak on a 08 🤦🏿♂️. Watching him do this so seamlessly 😂 standing and imagining I’ll be laying on the ground doing all of this smh
you can do this from top of the engine aswell if you're willing to stay in the air and if you know how to place the bolts without cross threading them without seeing
Why are you taking the turbo apart to do a water pump
Comparing with Nissan Maxima (V-6 3.5) and Infinity this SAAB 🇸🇪 it is a piece of 🍰 cake to change a water pump.
Haven't seen it but my neighbor works at Pep Boys and told me horrors of assuming a Infiniti was easy, pulled timing cover, saw the job and put cover back on called customer told her Pep Boys is unable to do a water pump on your vehicle.
And he's a pro too.
what are the part numbers to all the hoses you changed?
Note that this is a 2.0 lt 9-3. In the case of a 2.8 is much easier cause it's on the passenger's side of the engine. No special tool required.

2008 Saab 9.3 2.0T We will be removing the cylinder head to do the infamous valve intake replacement on the car. Curious if we will have any easier access to the water pump with the head off and thus should go ahead and replace the water pump (even if it's currently fine) at the same time we're doing the cylinder head work?
You will have much more access from the top with the head off, that's for certain. Plus, if you are doing to be doing that much work on the car, you might as well get the other weak spot out of the way and enjoy many years of reliable driving.

subframe looks like a MOT advisory. Think it might be time to cut-loose

What size ratchet and socket were you using to gain access to the front of the water pump with the tool on it. I was trying to use a 3/8” with a deepwell 10mm and couldn’t fit the ratchet into the tool. I’m assuming your using a 1/4” ratchet? Also is a magnetic socket necessary?
You mention the seals for the waterline, from thermostat housing to the turbo (17:44). Do you have those at europarts?
this is the 2.0 4 cylinder engine right. I have the 2.8 v6. is mine belt driven instead of chain driven???

I have a clue why you're taking the turbo apart when you're supposed to be doing a water pump you don't have to take anything off of the turbo to do the water pump I've done several of them
Kip have you ever ran a saab engine outside of the car? I am doing an engine swap in 4 months and I want to test the engine out from the junkyard before I install it. How would I get fuel to go to the injectors to see how it runs? any advice

saab was a good brand but it can be replaced a awd 2020 camery i beleive cheaper & easy
I changed my water pump out because of oil leak I done it like this video with new rubber gasket but I still have the oil leak between the pump face and engine near top where water port is any ideas would be welcome
how did you get the third bolt that holds the oil line to the turbo? i can only get my socket partially on and it looks like it's starting to round. did you use a swivel socket?

So what would a sign of the pump being bad be? Besides leaking I don't have any leaks from that area, my Saab 93 just cranks and cranks and cranks till it finally starts, I'm afraid it might be the head gasket because it finally looks like there is some coolant in my oil but I DONT have big plums of smoke coming from my exhaust. Just my starting issue, coolant keeps boiling over and out of the resivour, oil in my farthest right spark plug. No check engine light. I've replaced my t stat and my coolant temp sensor. Any suggestions where to start? Also my radiator seems clogged I turned the petcock and nothing drained out of it
Start by taking this car to a licensed mechanic that can run through a complete diagnostic. Whatever is going on is a strange one, and only someone with experience and special tools will be able to poke around that car and get down to the real problem.
@@Eeuroparts it was my head gasket so I have it pulled apart to do my head gasket, but I'm still curious what was causing the over heating, if my water pump was going out would that cause over heating? Because I'll replace it will I have the motor pulled apart if I need to, but I think it was fine, just not sure what was causing my over heating besides maybe my bad coolant resivour and cap. I've replaced the thermostat and temp sensor and resivour and cap, now doing the head gasket and hopefully it will be fixed
So did you replace all the hoses that you cut? Dumb question though, but thinking about where I can get those
When I did this I didn't remove all that, lol. My special tool looks nothing like that one. When I removed the bolts I glued a super magnet inside a deep 10mm socket. I didn't waste time getting magnetic bolts 🤨 I already had the magnet. 😊

O yea, such engines with exactly same water pump are in many, many existing GM vehicles. (2.0, 2.4, 2.5) . Even on 2018, 2019 years models.
Team EcoTec designers must have had it out for mechanics......

7:27 the plugs for both O2 sensors are located above vacuum pump, easy to unplug. Would that make it easier?

If there is no crane just a bolt to drain the coolant, could you assume that the water pump has been replaced?

I keep having a coolant low light come on with the check engine light? I've replaced my thermostat and my heat sensor I'm wondering if a water pump issue can anybody help me out!
Check all hoses and connections. I had a few leaks from the radiator and heater hoses. Replaced the hoses with Do88 Silicone ones, replaced the o ring around heater hose connections and the leaking stopped

The chain on the sprocket is precisely timed with the balance shafts, if the balance shafts are out of...well..balance, your engine will shake itself to pieces
I live in the south, we don't deal with snow nor salt, do I still need to use a torch on the exhaust and other lower bolts?
Try some penetrating oil first, if not then you might still need to use the torch. Just the heat cycling alone can help freeze these bolts
And I hope I never have to change the water pump on my car. Parts that break makes me miss my Taurus lol

We would say novice/backyard wrenchers should take their time and portion a weekend to pull it off.
What do I do if the water pump bolt falls in? Can I use a telescoping magnet tool?
Imagine the inside like a Pachinko machine, there's no way to get that bolt out without removing the timing cover. DO NOT start the engine with the bolt in there, as you risk complete engine failure.
What a complete pain in the butt, good video though, I just to change the belt and tensioner and that was not much fun.
Id rather just get the 2.8 turbo V-6. I hated working on those ecotec engines.
LoL On a BMW 6 cylinder maybe a 30 minute job to do a water pump. ;)

its probably an e39 or an e46 , both cars are so much easier to work on. This job on this saab is enough for me to not even want to touch these cars.
djscottyc The new generation (last generation) Saabs were very different to all earlier models. Saabs, as far as we have experience, are fairly easy to work on. Don't let this video scare you, we made it because it is far and away an exception that many people need help with. It is the same procedure as on all GM Ecotec engines, such as those found in the Chevy Cobalt.

Worst designed car I’ve ever owned if my pump goes I will scrap the car
This guy turned a hour and a half job into a seven hour job. No need to remove any of the exhaust components, o2 sensors or valance. Do you only exhaust component that needs removed is the upper heat shield. Such a waste of time dealing with bolts on the turbo when there’s plenty of room to work around it. The thermostat housing is removed from the top after removing the Thermostat cover and moving it to the side. The crossover pipe can also be removed from the top. Work smarter not harder!

Felt like hell I was wet and cold and shit sometimes my hands would be too short sometimes too long, I dont own the special tool so, it was like hell. I cried, i cursed, and then sold it.
Much easier if it could be taken off only opening the timing cover, and you would not need silly tools
