Seriously great work. I'm glad you published this and look forward to your future installments like this. The clip dumps and warpaint/workshop videos are also great but this raised a bar in a way I hope doesn't backfire
Feels like you read my mind with this whole video, it's not just about the game it's about the design and the attention to detail in their own special way.
That's the normal way to use Hunstman vro. You aim for a bodyshot and finish them with the SMG. If you get a headshot, you get a headshot. So what if bro misses? It's got nothin to do with the video anyway.
I notice that almost every person has a midlife crisis with this game in the form of a loveletter like this video. If that doesn't say how special this game is to people, nothing will.
This game is like watching a dementia patient slowly disappear. You still love them, you miss the person they used to be, and there are still some good moments, but it's ultimately just crushing to deal with.
strongly disagree with this. I think tf2 is in a great place, and i’m very hopeful for the future. tf2 won’t last forever, nothing will. but I don’t see it fading into the black quietly.
I personally find i appreciate embargo, not because of its graphics compared to stock tf2, but because i can feel the passion that went into designing it. It just feels like the team or guy who made it went ham, simply because they love the idea, the characters, the setting, etc... Youre definitely right that it is non-conforming, but atleast in embargo's case, i quite appreciate it. Amazing video, man. I quite like the shift in tone.
I've often found myself staring off onto the edges of Upward and Dustbowl. The sunset of Dustbowl, the rocks that make it all up, the buildings and skyboxes, and it feels... different. Good different.
The old maps are mesmerizing, like staring at a painting. The soundscape, skybox, out-of-bounds areas are all just perfection. As Monkey said, there's never going to be a game like this ever again.
lol that's not true xd, they don't have much to do with each other, the style is inspired by the visual style of the 60's and military propaganda of the time lol
@@damianateiroIt was also inspired by the simplicity of the colors, textures and shape design, something Ghibli Movies have aswell, the video cited some examples really well.
I'm not going to lie, I definitely walked away from TF2. I also walked away because of the bot crisis, obviously, but it's not just that. The new updates just feel soulless, and I can't stand the fact that barely anyone wants to replicate the style of TF2 for new updates. It's all tacky doesn't entice me to play the game anymore. I agree with you when talking about comparing TF2 to things like Fortnite, its feels shameful. I started playing the game during Jungle Inferno, the calm before the storm, and I really wish I got to experience older updates. I am blown away though by the development of the game. The art style, the character designs and distinctions, the layout, and simplicity is just inspiring. It's a beautiful painting. I'm just rambling, but this video perfectly shows why the little things in video games, like TF2, are very important and can make or break your game. It's not just about the shooting and micro transactions, it's also the personality/character. Thanks, you Monkey for this great explanation :)
Honestly, I don't see why the lack of significant updates prevents anyone from playing the game. Aside from a certain few weapons (Phlog, Diamondback), it feels like the game really doesn't need any changing. Sure, the updates we do get are just soulless money farming, but I still like most of the new maps, even if they don't perfectly fit the aesthetic, and afterall the maps were made by real people who also like the game (...probably).
*"It's eternity in there."* -People who waits for the new TF2 killer and real update, probably We all love this game because it doesn't feel like playing a game. Sometimes you can just chill with your teammates, or even your opponents. There's rarely a game that let you do this... It's shame really, Valve really "fixed" TF2 because of Deadlock, I mean look at how positive people about Deadlock after they "fix" TF2
@@JAIBADRIVISHAAL They are quite hypocritical, they cry about bad cosmetics but they buy 50 boxes and keys of those cosmetics, I know they complain about the visual clarity but they have many unusual ones xd
@@damianateiroZesty sold out lol, he only buys new stuff when it helps him prove his point about something (for example, the new spy coat he ran around in to confuse players)
I've played TF2 for roughly 7 years now, 4,000 hours. It was worth every minute playing it, it has a massive imprint on my life and I often bring parts of it to other games, like recreating the structures seen in maps in sandbox games like Minecraft or Blocksworld. The characters are special and I even own several physical props and a couple of costumes of the classes, I play every class. I record every single in game session because there is always something new and fun that happens that I want to capture. despite it's flaws TF2 is easily one of my favorite games of all time. Awesome video
It's funny, like a day or two before this vid I found Mönkey playing medic on frontier. I play on swedish servers often, but it never occurred to me that I could meet him cus he's Swedish. I got excited and just for fun asked when new vid drops. And lo and behold.
little mönkey boy thank you for making this, i've always had a video like this in mind but never had the will to actually make anything. nice to see someone who appreciates what TF2's art style truly encompasses enough to make a video about it
This video is truly beautiful. I’ve played TF2 on and off for awhile now and the one thing that drew me in all those years ago was the unique style and look of the game. I’m definitely “new” by some people’s standards but I can appreciate TF2 for the unique game it is. I enjoy playing it, having fun and random moments in a game that I can’t get anywhere else and more. You nailed it. I’ll never get to experience the older days of TF2 but I love the passion a lot of folks who have been around with the game for a long time have. You’re a fantastic content creator Mönkey and I love videos like these. I get to learn new things and appreciate things I didn’t know about before. Keep up all your good work.
I agree with you entirely on this, and honestly, this motivates me to take advantage of my position in being a self taught game developer and actually make something that's up to snuff with the greatness that is TF2 once I've made enough smaller games to properly build the skills and practice needed to be such a talented game developer
Sometimes I wish Valve would listen to us at least once in our lives about the TF2 issue because it's a game loved by everyone and it's still alive today. You know, there are games that it created that aren't even that popular.
Reminded me of some things I used to know, and showed me some others that I didn't know previously. A thoroughly informative video. I 100% get the brain fog (I suffer from Fibromyalgia), and I know what it's like when struggling to create content - both as a streamer and as a games development student. Thank you for sticking at it, your videos brighten my day whenever I watch and rewatch them.
this game was one of my first ever pc game. i was like a freshman or 8th grader i played it on my moms laptop and its been my favorite multiplayer shooter and it will always be a prized game in my life and gaming life
6:05 "TF2 was (partially) inspired by Hayao Miyazaki" was not something I was expecting to hear, and yet something that I can see when I stop to think about it.
Super fascinating to see the origins of the games concept art! I've gained a new appreciation for the art style of this game, especially after look at more Jack Delano photography.
thank you for making a good video to watch on my birthday. i love this game, and its sad to see the state its currently in, but its still fun at the end of the day
i feel you man TF2 has been a huge part of my life since i first played it on my friends pc to eventually getting my own and was the first game i downloaded. to me its kept my friendships stronger then ever with the amount of times me and the bois jump on it to have fun or the hours we have talking about about the game in terms of memes or things we think could improve it, its helped me form bonds with people behind the screen and even getting a chance to meet them IRL. To me TF2 is one of my all time faves because it has helped me through good and bad times and never has been stale since first playing it back in 2010. i love this game and i honestly wish it could and hell hope it will keep going for even more years.
Yep. I stopped playing back when cosmetics were becoming a thing, circa 2010-ish. I recently returned to the game out of nostalgia but it's kind of a beast of its own now. Most maps look awful, too. It was a privilege to have beta tested it back in 2007. Nothing quite like it.
Another 2 games that really give this type of essence for me are Battlefield 1 and Squad 44 In both you have the ability to instantly identify whose an enemy player and whose a friendly. Yes, you can argue that "Those are games based on war, their uniforms are meant to differentiate them", but the thing is that modern games like Battlefield V, Battlefield 2042, Overwatch, Isonzo, etc tend to add customizable skins that destroy the image of the original model, like Mönkey described in the video, and if you disable nametags, map icons and the ability to see them through walls you can´t really know which one is an enemy and which one is an ally. So you have to fill your screen with little indicators and icons that tell you who´s who (That´s why I hate hero based game) I know I might have just repeated what Mönkey said, but I just wanted to give more examples to this issue in modern gaming. Which is "Overcloud" of the player´s screen.
I actually have my loadouts tailored around older cosmetics and item sets. I liked the idea of playing the mercs with what they were given in their animated films like the allbrero demo and retro rebel scout from expiration date and the winter cosmetics from end of the line. I wear these cosmetics because I wanted to BE that exact merc since it was presented to us in official media. It’s kinda sad to say but I’ve been playing all year and I have not seen another allbrero demoman. An item set that has so much love put into it as it was crafted, featured in an animated film and even got it’s own taunt to compliment it. So I may as well wear to represent that love.
Thanks for making this video, it's good to see how people enjoyed this game not only by the gameplay, but because of what you said, that It has soul into it, and I 100% agree, I didn't know about the origins of that stuff, and it's good to see how everything was made, I personally love the characterization of the mercenaries and other ones too (like Ms. Pauling). If you were to make more videos about it, the choices, the ideas, the designs, and why you love it in general, I would love it, but If not, I'll just continue to watch your clip dump videos and other stuff that you make too
Right away Mönkey I want to say, I do feel like you have a genuine good grasp of the game’s art style. You’ve described what makes the style work in ways that’d make it easier for those who wouldn’t understand the subtly of it very well. You do seem to have a passion for the game and I salute you for being able to describe the artistry of the game. Somethings I want to say, and it’s fine if you disagree, I still feel there is at least still some passion in current Valve than them being passionless. What they did to TF2 for years and how CS2 is being neglected are tragic, and I understand the anger towards them. They shouldn’t be given a pass for the neglect they’ve done and I am still waiting for them to do more to earn back my respect, but I also personally believe they’ve shown they still have a hint of their old selves. I have gotten to play their latest games, HL:A, CS2, and Deadlock, and while there are justified criticisms for all three games, one thing that I was able to take away from all of them is there still is a bit of the Valve we knew. Right off the bat I’ll say I like casual games and don’t like mobas, yet I personally find Deadlock to be very fun and helps showcase there still is talent within Valve to make quality games. It’s not one for everyone, but I’d still argue there is still good game design within it. I can understand assuming they had fixed TF2’s bots because of Deadlock’s release, and it may just be me, but I feel like one reason why it could’ve possibly been so long was at the very least they were doing silent analysis on all the cheats being used for a few years to ensure there’d be a long period without cheaters like we had been being seeing. Even if this wasn’t the case, I personally wouldn’t believe it being entirely about the Deadlock leaks because the same could’ve been said about CS2 when it was shown to be in development and released. Even if I do like Deadlock, I’ll admit I don’t see it ever topping TF2 stylistically because it follows one of the trends you mentioned of having to use red outlines or health bars for team recognition. I would’ve liked Deadlock to borrow more from the principles of TF2 than modern principles. Even when complimenting Deadlock, I still think the game design and art of TF2 is much higher among one of the best I’ve ever seen in gaming. Unless there is a miracle, or an indie/AA developer looking to create a similar style, TF2 really is one of a kind in many aspects and should have its legacy and lessons in art and game design respected.
I may have only joined in 2018 and missed the golden age, but this game still means a lot to me, I doubt it but, i hope valve gets their shit together with it. A mann can dream can’t he?
Very interesting. I joined TF2 around 2018-19, and never really thought about it the way you do. You've changed how I view this game now, and I thank you for it.
People love this game. What this game had at one point, was something you could not find anywhere else. You still, can't find it anywhere else. Gatekeep this game people, prevent it from being lost to the change of style that is slowly creeping up on it.
tf2 maps are special for me because the designs of most maps makes me want to explore it forever, and go out of bounds to see what is everywhere. funnily enough this is what made the old community maps memorable too, despite their game design being objectively amateur (looking at you old VSH maps). there's not too many games that make me want to stop shooting at things and breathe in the atmosphere.
Something that I learned recently and has stuck with me, was that the clarity also remains consistent with particle and VFX design. Rocket trails are bright at the rocket base, and quickly transition to a dark grey; the rocket's direction and position is easily readable while leaving the trail to blend in with the environment. Same with explosions: start bright orange, then immediately fade to grey, because only the initial explosion is important enough to quickly attract your eyes during gameplay. Quick flashes and coloured trails tell you the state and team of stickies, pipes, arrows and healing beams. Anything unimportant to gameplay either blends in or is not included. There were so, so many times where I just had to laugh and throw my hands up at a death in Overwatch 2 or Destiny 2, because I honestly had no clue what was happening. The visual clutter from neon trails and explosions, AoE effects constantly moving around, even the UI shaking around when my character moves.. my eyes are drawn to something without regard for its importance in gameplay (e.g., me being healed and damaged while a shield sits in front of me--a very normal sight in Overwatch 2--somehow takes visual precedence over the non-diegetic enemy health bars in my view). This creep of visual clutter and mismanagement of bright colours in the industry is interesting (and annoying) to pick apart, and largely due to a focus on marketing and leeway for flashy MTX cosmetics. These things should be thought of like a mental budget for players, rather than hardware budgets that seemingly no longer exist. The chaos of large team fights feels natural, and comes off as something I could master should I put my mind to keeping track of important targets; the chaos of visual clutter feels artificial, and comes off as "I wish I could turn down my graphics settings".
This video sums up how I feel about the game nowadays perfectly. TF2 was literally the first game I started playing on PC, and it is still the game I have the most hours on. I've been wanting to get back into the game, and I occasionally hop on to play a game or two of casual or MvM, but my motivation quickly dies out when I am greeted by getting last years seasonal case that is full of absolute shite. The game doesn't feel the same as it once did.. and you worded it perfectly. It is a shell of it's former self. I hope something gets done and this game can get its soul back. Because it is the last genuinely good game out there. And in my opinion, the games that I enjoy end up feeling like shadows of TF2.
Something I'm sad about is how true the statement that no OTHER game will ever come close to the beauty that is Team Fortress 2, nobody will be able to replicate the passion behind this game because were entering an age where Passion and love for media is fading away
Awesome video Monke, couldn't agree more! I wish companies took their time in learning why things the way they are and how to implement long-term, timeless design choices instead of slaving and dumping assets. TF2 is truly the GOAT.
Well when you put it like that, holy HECK were we spoiled! And the part about the team colors vs. the background and showing Destiny as a comparison was something that's totally obvious now but you'd never really think about.
Thanks for the art style/ origin breakdown it helped me see once again the beauty in the craft that is game design while seeing tf2 for the masterpiece it is.
Thank you Monkey, u made me understand more about what makes TF2 a beautiful game and appreciate the many aspects of it which I have overlooked all these times.
I started playing tf2 back in 2014 on my dad’s Dell XPS. I’ve played through a lot of changes and while I don’t play as much anymore I feel I have “completed” it in a sense. I’ve played Highlander, unboxed some unusuals, own several Australians, and even when I hop on try to give an unusual or two to new and aspiring new players. 5500+ hours later I can say that I still love tf2.
I actually played D2 for 9000 hours without a HUD at all so yes I do agree that "it would be nice if the text wasn't there in the middle of the screen", because it isn't for me xD Love the video btw, wish that depth of field wasn't there but what can ya do. Oh yeah I also use two swords so 99% of the time I am in 3rd person view, if I played in 1st person it would be too much xD
On the game design video, i would love to see it to be honest. I very much enjoy people raving on their passions, and i believe you would do a fantastic job on said video.
another great mönke video, it is truly sad to see what has happened to my favourite game from my childhood. It might never get any better, but at least we have the community and I will forever keep playing and enjoying the halloween event
The hilarious part is I actually do know what was happening in that Destiny 2 clip. Granted, I never actually tried to compare the games. I never wanted to. D2 PvP is fucking horrible, for the exact reason you brought up. It never occurred to me until you said it, but it's awful because the game doesn't do a great job making contrast.
Disjunction is also an awful map. The design makes it extremely easy to get ambushed and die with no idea what happened, and the spacing is so messed up that you can't really prepare for the entire map. You're either inside or outside. That's it.
I, somehow, haven't played any new map that got added since around 2018/2020, tbh I haven't touched casual for YEARS I think the charm comes how the game allows for expressing yourself with pieces like cosmetics and warpaints but aren't really intrusive compared to some modern games, kind of like in Roblox (stupid comparison) where just a simple hat can change everything (The problem with Roblox compared to TF2's is the inclusion of the post R-15 model clothes (like the adaptive clothing that allow you to straight up change to other entities for example), but this isn't about that) You wouldn't have stuff like The Observer or various other gimmick-like stuff if not for cosmetics, the game would be way too same-y and boring if you'd see just the stock-looking mercs constantlu, not mentioning that you wouldn't really know who's who (like, distincting player A from player B) The warpaints, another way to express yourself, but it's not like in CS2 or other games like thatwhere they are just skins, they feel different in TF2 (at least for me) and they really can make a loadout complete if composed right (not mentioning, some warpaints are much better when they are damaged, but again, only in TF2) And honestly, I have several mods (but for stuff that barely matter, like Engi's PDA) that have way different style, but somehow still feel right in the game, the art style is done that well that no matter what you'd do, it's very hard to "ruin" it just because one little thing isn't stylized This is why I hate and love TF2C for example, they added weapons and other stuff that TF2 would benefit from, but you just can't replay it as much as TF2 just because it constantly feels the same
I started playing TF2 just a year ago, and even though the game was in a poor state in terms of bots and cheaters, I fell in love with it. The reason is simple. I have never seen anything like this before, and even then I realized that we unlikely to receive anything like this in forseeable. I'll be glad to be wrong though
TF2 was life-changing, and it's heartbreaking to watch it decay. I didn't think about it when I started playing. I was playing a few multiplayer games at the time and TF2 just happened to be one I owned as part of the Orange Box. Yet, eventually, I stopped playing each of those games - except for TF2, which until I uninstalled during FixTF2 I had been playing for over 10 years and 2000 hours - nearly THREE TIMES as long as the #2 game in my library. You're absolutely right: we WERE spoiled. As I learned about the game, the mechanics, SFM, the community, the comics - I was shocked to learn just how much effort went into details (or lack of detail) that I had taken for granted. Every choice was made with gameplay as the primary motivation, every design element was intentional and deliberate. Above all, the sheer *unity* of the game (for lack of a better word) was incredible - nothing felt out of place, every piece contributed to the singular unique vision that was TF2. This is the part that turns me off of other hero shooters - their lack of unity; they're designed by committee for mass appeal and wind up scatterbrained, ugly, and soulless as a result. I'm an amateur game dev now, and that's in no small part due to TF2, in seeing how every single aspect of a game can be fine-tuned to optimize player experience and promote the desired emotion in the player, the power of its unified vision. Fuck bot hosts for destroying art and fun for kicks. Fuck the community for taking advantage of Valve's indifference to make a quick buck. Most of all, fuck Valve for letting this game rot.
Randomly shitting on people and claiming they "don't care" about the game just because they disagree with you made the ending of this video really fucking disappointing. I love TF2's artstyle and attention to clarity as much as the next guy but I don't think the way to make your "I love TF2" video stand out was to needlessly gatekeep and be a prick. We don't need to put down others to show our love for one.
@@grimurex He didn't say they don't care about the game, he said they don't care FOR the game. There's a difference. Curating a game's core experience by paying attention to visual clarity and cohesion is not "gatekeeping," it's ensuring that the timeless nature of the thing you love will forever be timeless. I have no doubt that the people making gaudy cosmetics and maps with unique artstyles love and care about TF2, but that's not the point. They're still actively diluting a piece of the game's identity.
TF2 got me into establishing style, character design, and even storytelling within the map and objective itself. Everything is done with purpose, and it's unlike anything else I've ever played. Not many games can make walking around an empty map interesting. The ambiance of the Intel rooms, the blowing wind in the middle of nowhere, everything is so seamless when put into motion. This game is a masterclass and should be studied by people who want to be worthy competitors. Rip concord lol xd
I think what this game needs is balance. I'm not talking about weapon balance, that's a whole other topic in itself. I'm talking about a balance between the elements of the old and new. I love the timeless style and gameplay, and I also love how utterly ridiculous and goofy the game can get. The fact you run around and slap people with a fish, laugh at their corpse, and then randomly explode into a pile of gibs with the push of a button... it's glorious. I love that I can both play the game seriously, and can also just spy crab around the map for no particular reason. This game is so good for so many reasons, and I am still holding out hope that one day we'll get good updates again.
Spot on! I used to play TF2 a LOT and I was never into shooters. It was the art stile that hooked me at first and then the gameplay. You can't help but immerse yourself into it. It has personality, language and soul. Also humour, thats a rarity nowadays. One of the best games ever made. Evel Genious is one of the games that for me is kinda similar with TF2 in it's approach, though it's completely different genre.
I just think its a game that is simple to play and then once you get to know everything, u appreciate the game more you discover new things even though u might know something.
Seeing you start with Mountain Lab as an "example of the clarity in TF2's artstyle" makes me wonder, if you have seen youtuber LED's "TF2 Maps Lost to Time" video which went through how Mountain lab went through a community art pass contest and the devs picked 1(2, the second was Mann Manor) to go with the Valve-made map geometry. Do you think they picked the right one? There were ALOT of various styles and takes on how to approach the map geometry, it was really interesting to see the variation. This was at a time when there were fewer map assetpacks so-to-speak, so the artstyle had not drifted away nearly so heavily as we often see nowadays.
This video said it all. I love tf2 and just play casual. A lot of the new gamemodes I try and that's about it, nothing can come close to casual and the actual good maps in the pool. Several of the new maps on my first play had me say 'isnt this just overwatch?' which really says it all. I have never chosen what maps I queue for, and i always queue for the core modes minus ctf, but watching this video made me think I should do otherwise, as I would always enjoy being spawncamed in upward than playing some of the new maps normally.
With +10k hours on the game, I'm still amazed by the artstyle of TF2. I could sit there on a good old map, and appreciate the beauty of every details. This is why I like to play Team Fortress 2 Classic sometimes, without all those flashy cosmetics and skins, it really feels like playing TF2 like I used to in 2011 when I discovered this masterpiece
I loved TF2, I fell out of it during the bot crisis and stopped playing it for a long time until recently bots have been taken out of TF2, watching monkey's content it made me remember how fun and charming TF2 was, it still is, I think it always will be, I love everything about TF2, monkey being one of the reasons why I love it so much, the content he creates on it is genuinely funny and insanely enjoyable to rewatch over and over again, each time making me only want to play TF2 more myself, even alone, its still fun, despite all the things TF2 has gone thru and suffered I think the reason why its still as good as it is, is because of the community and content creators that are so dedicated and in love with the game, making it so much more alive and loving with the amount of care the developers put in the game, everything I've seen about TF2 besides the bots and obvious exploits has been good, maybe the skin crates and trading not so much but regardless of everything and its imperfections, its still a fun game and content creators such as monkey and vorobey always make the game look so enjoyable and fun to come back to, honestly glad such an old game still has such a strong-standing healthy community that supported it through the lows, I appreciate everything and everyone from TF2's community and the game itself it has honestly brought me up from my own lows aswell and kept me happy, so thank you monkey and every other TF2 player for keeping the game so fun and alive. :]
Thank you for making this video, I'm glad to see something from you again. We should certainly receive 4 to 5 maps instead of 10, but we did get Applejack. Take care Mönkey.
Thankyou for this video men it makes me appreciate more this game and how the whole idea was made also you didn't talk about the mvm robots they do fit in the tf2 style im sure
I joined in late 2020 on pc, previously i had played as a kid way back when i had a 360, quickly becoming infatuated with the game, i can remember watching through muselks old medic vs engineer zombie gamemode quite clearly, yet after finally being able to truly play, it was in the middle of the bot crisis, i played for 2 years with a shitty pc and with bots flooding servers, persevering nonetheless, tf2 is unlike anything ive ever played befire, truly befitting of my personal best game of all time rating, i built a new pc in my time playing it, now, bots are gone, 64bit update was made, everything looks hopefull, but what is that hope? That things returned to how they once were? I joined in 2020, ive never seen a major update or actual content added, perhaps that is what the hope is for still, to live through a golden age of tf2 i never got to have, to know the excitement of waking up and seeing a meaningful new update. Regardless ive rambled too long, not even sure as to why, as of writing i have 3300 hours give or take, if anyone read this far then thank you.
TF2 is and will always be my favorite videogame, not because of the gameplay or the community but because I love the look of the game. Even though I always uninstall it after playing a few casual matches, I will never change the TF2 wallpaper on my phone and desktop.

TF2 deserves to be in a museum as one of the most unique and influential games out there
Just don't put it on a British museum
Theres no Overwatch, Paladins, Valorant etc without TF2

I've often found myself staring off onto the edges of Upward and Dustbowl. The sunset of Dustbowl, the rocks that make it all up, the buildings and skyboxes, and it feels... different. Good different.
The old maps are mesmerizing, like staring at a painting. The soundscape, skybox, out-of-bounds areas are all just perfection.
As Monkey said, there's never going to be a game like this ever again.
I'd never knew that TF2 artstyle was kinda inspired by Miyazaki's work, thats neat... Some of my favorite pieces of media have some sort of connection
lol that's not true xd, they don't have much to do with each other, the style is inspired by the visual style of the 60's and military propaganda of the time lol
@@damianateirodid you not watch the video
@@BoxCuttur thanks pally
This game sets a standard, a style perhaps: Simple but defined. More people should appreciate that 😉
*"It's eternity in there."* -People who waits for the new TF2 killer and real update, probably
We all love this game because it doesn't feel like playing a game. Sometimes you can just chill with your teammates, or even your opponents. There's rarely a game that let you do this...
It's shame really, Valve really "fixed" TF2 because of Deadlock, I mean look at how positive people about Deadlock after they "fix" TF2
Wow it's almost like the review bombing of TF2 and other Valve games stopped
People keep talking about how TF2 is Timeless and beautiful but when you point out specifically why and try to preserve it they get so angry.
Zesty and many people helped preserve and conserve the artstyle and etc .... basically core and soul of tf2 !!

Good lord almighty he's ALIVE!
It's funny, like a day or two before this vid I found Mönkey playing medic on frontier. I play on swedish servers often, but it never occurred to me that I could meet him cus he's Swedish. I got excited and just for fun asked when new vid drops. And lo and behold.
Hopefully he isn't a venusianrapper apologist still
I will gatekeep the death out of this game if it means keeping its standards. Otherwise there's no reason for me to love it this much.

little mönkey boy thank you for making this, i've always had a video like this in mind but never had the will to actually make anything. nice to see someone who appreciates what TF2's art style truly encompasses enough to make a video about it
I wish you luck on your future videos man, hope they all turn out well.
This was painful to watch, and not in a bad way, just the sense of the inevitable death of passion projects and rise of modern day slop.
I agree with you entirely on this, and honestly, this motivates me to take advantage of my position in being a self taught game developer and actually make something that's up to snuff with the greatness that is TF2 once I've made enough smaller games to properly build the skills and practice needed to be such a talented game developer
Using Darktide music at 10:15 was a great touch, that game’s soundtrack is top tier

Tf2 overall is a fever dream. It’s weird, but you still end up remembering it no matter what
Sometimes I wish Valve would listen to us at least once in our lives about the TF2 issue because it's a game loved by everyone and it's still alive today.

I love the comparison between making corporate decisions over artistic ones, a great way to speak to what's happened to everything these days
Super fascinating to see the origins of the games concept art! I've gained a new appreciation for the art style of this game, especially after look at more Jack Delano photography.

i feel you man TF2 has been a huge part of my life since i first played it on my friends pc to eventually getting my own and was the first game i downloaded. to me its kept my friendships stronger then ever with the amount of times me and the bois jump on it to have fun or the hours we have talking about about the game in terms of memes or things we think could improve it, its helped me form bonds with people behind the screen and even getting a chance to meet them IRL. To me TF2 is one of my all time faves because it has helped me through good and bad times and never has been stale since first playing it back in 2010. i love this game and i honestly wish it could and hell hope it will keep going for even more years.
My nerdiest, most selfish wish is that they outright removed most of the maps that didn't adhere to TF2's artstyle.
YES
Lmao, I want to remove almost everything past 2013, including weapon rebalances (fun destroyers)
including bloat unusual effects and those ugly all class cosmetics.
Yep. I stopped playing back when cosmetics were becoming a thing, circa 2010-ish. I recently returned to the game out of nostalgia but it's kind of a beast of its own now. Most maps look awful, too. It was a privilege to have beta tested it back in 2007. Nothing quite like it.
@@matheusgraef Or the maps that just.. don't work?
Another 2 games that really give this type of essence for me are Battlefield 1 and Squad 44
In both you have the ability to instantly identify whose an enemy player and whose a friendly. So you have to fill your screen with little indicators and icons that tell you who´s who (That´s why I hate hero based game)
I know I might have just repeated what Mönkey said, but I just wanted to give more examples to this issue in modern gaming. Which is "Overcloud" of the player´s screen.
Nice to have you back, your particular clip dumps have a particular humor about them that not many if any creators have
I actually have my loadouts tailored around older cosmetics and item sets.
This is not just TF2. Children and grifters have ruined nearly every space on the internet.
Well.... Here we are. Hey, can you tell me tomorrow's lotto numbers next?
I hope you do more videos in this style in the future, this was nice, a much needed breath of fresh air
I swear to god just look at that funny looking lamp, you need to wake up.
I may have only joined in 2018 and missed the golden age, but this game still means a lot to me,
I doubt it but, i hope valve gets their shit together with it.
A mann can dream can’t he?
the recent halloween events really takes the cake for being the absolute opposite of what this video is trying to convey

Mogey speeks and I listen, yes sir I'm ready for this shit
tf2 maps are special for me because the designs of most maps makes me want to explore it forever, and go out of bounds to see what is everywhere. funnily enough this is what made the old community maps memorable too, despite their game design being objectively amateur (looking at you old VSH maps).
there's not too many games that make me want to stop shooting at things and breathe in the atmosphere.
excellent video, touching on aspects of the artstyle that no other video has
Something that I learned recently and has stuck with me, was that the clarity also remains consistent with particle and VFX design.
Монки у тебя классные видео. Продолжай снимать и радовать нас контентом 👍

I love this video so much, thanks for exploring this for us Monkey!
Some good work you did there. Well done
That's it.
I, somehow, haven't played any new map that got added since around 2018/2020, tbh I haven't touched casual for YEARS
I think the charm comes how the game allows for expressing yourself with pieces like cosmetics and warpaints but aren't really intrusive compared to some modern games, kind of like in Roblox (stupid comparison) where just a simple hat can change everything
(The problem with Roblox compared to TF2's is the inclusion of the post R-15 model clothes (like the adaptive clothing that allow you to straight up change to other entities for example), but this isn't about that)
You wouldn't have stuff like The Observer or various other gimmick-like stuff if not for cosmetics, the game would be way too same-y and boring if you'd see just the stock-looking mercs constantlu, not mentioning that you wouldn't really know who's who (like, distincting player A from player B)
The warpaints, another way to express yourself, but it's not like in CS2 or other games like thatwhere they are just skins, they feel different in TF2 (at least for me) and they really can make a loadout complete if composed right
(not mentioning, some warpaints are much better when they are damaged, but again, only in TF2)
And honestly, I have several mods (but for stuff that barely matter, like Engi's PDA) that have way different style, but somehow still feel right in the game, the art style is done that well that no matter what you'd do, it's very hard to "ruin" it just because one little thing isn't stylized
This is why I hate and love TF2C for example, they added weapons and other stuff that TF2 would benefit from, but you just can't replay it as much as TF2 just because it constantly feels the same
damn, youtube ACTUALLY recommended me a Mönkey video RIGHT as its uploaded? what did you do to get in their good graces?
I started playing TF2 just a year ago, and even though the game was in a poor state in terms of bots and cheaters, I fell in love with it. The reason is simple. I have never seen anything like this before, and even then I realized that we unlikely to receive anything like this in forseeable. I'll be glad to be wrong though
install the audio drivers for your XLR mic
Mönkey actually has a really pleasing calm voice. I would watch/listen to many video essays by this guy
Nice to see people still Iove good games for being good games, not for the updates to come.
Youre one of the real ones
Randomly shitting on people and claiming they "don't care" about the game just because they disagree with you made the ending of this video really fucking disappointing. I love TF2's artstyle and attention to clarity as much as the next guy but I don't think the way to make your "I love TF2" video stand out was to needlessly gatekeep and be a prick. We don't need to put down others to show our love for one.
yeah the turn of the video gave me whiplash
True Brother.
Yes because the world is perfect and we need to accept every opinion there is and whatnot
@@bruschetta7711 saying people don't care about something is not an opinion, that's a claim
I’m glad someone talked about this games visual aesthetic.
This is why I like to play Team Fortress 2 Classic sometimes, without all those flashy cosmetics and skins, it really feels like playing TF2 like I used to in 2011 when I discovered this masterpiece
i pretty much exclusively play the old maps because they are so visually pleasing
Thank you for the background info

Bro made a whole history lesson just to complain about the newer content again 💀
Thanks, Mönkey.
TF2 is and will always be my favorite videogame, not because of the gameplay or the community but because I love the look of the game. Even though I always uninstall it after playing a few casual matches, I will never change the TF2 wallpaper on my phone and desktop.
Didn't know my favorite childhood movie help made TF2! That's a real deep cut.
I thought he was gonna walk over there and just stare at the sky.
FINALLY, you said exactly what I was thinking!
never thought my main game would end up being a cartoon meme shooter.. but 9 years later, im still here.
cant wait for the UFR episode about this...
