@danielmatthews4262 thanks! I appreciate the first hand knowledge! Although I must say I've Never received any bad piece of kit from PKS, Pathfinder, or Self Reliance Outfitters!
Just recently, I added the Pathfinder PFM40 (Swedish Mess Kit style) Cook Set to my Pathfinder Stainless Steel Canteen Set in my pack. This is a great setup for cooking up some lunch or dinner when in the woods. On longer journeys in this hot weather, I’ve also been carrying an additional 32 ounces of water in my Pathfinder Stainless Steel Bottle. That maybe a bit of container overload, but I’m usually doing more cooking than simply boiling up some water. Self Reliance Outfitters designs and sales rock solid camp cooking equipment. Very satisfied with these purchases.
As an ex British soldier, I totally agree with you on the water bottle and cup set. In the 80,s I had a plastic water bottle and cup. I hated it. I always wanted a metal version just to boil water like you said. I have now have the crusader mug but need the bottle to fit. Not sure if the American bottle will fit. Fortunately I'm not a soldier anymore. So don't need to worry about it too much. 😂
Just bought the crusader stainless not sure if to get 5he osprey bottle or the Nalgene oasis the Nalgene will be small but think it might b3 the better bottle
Nice. 10-15yrs ago there really wasnt a lot of cup and bottle type options. Today its a golden age of containers compared to the 80's 90's and early 2000's. Good stuff
I think the most overlooked addition to the bottle cookset is that the entire thing including the stick stove will fit into the pathfinder 40 oz cup. With that theres still room for the alcohol stove or a butane fuel can inside the molle bag. Best kit ever. Food and drink with 2 stove options. Keep it up Dave!
I have been carrying the double canteen cup rigging for years I finally switched over to the Pathfinder canteen set and I added my 1981 basic training canteen cup and I am as happy as a Pathfinder on the trail
thanks I use the bottle, nice to know I can put the klean kanteen cap on it, which I prefer from a previous klean product I had. I added a small 250ml SS cup that nests on the lid of the bottle so I can have tea/coffee as well as a meal at the same time. great products
Hello 👋 Dave, thank you for sharing this informative video. I like both sets. I do have the military style canteen set and it has served me well. Keep up your great videos. Always stay safe out there. 😊
Yeah actually pretty good info. I was wondering the same thing the other day. I never knew about the kettle but the screen is interesting. Can't wait for the cup with wire handles. Cool deal Dave😊
My bottle set is from the era when the cup had holes for the fish mouth spreader to hang over fire - only criticism is i forget the holes are in the rim and regularly dribble coffee down myself 😂
I have both,(well two of each) it depends on the kit it fits in better. I like cooking in the canteen cup over the regular cup. But the bottle usually fits in the kits better. While in the Army I shaved in my canteen cup, then made coffee with it
I have both systems. The Pathfinder Bottle System is in my hiking/camping pack, and the Pathfinder Canteen System is in my wilderness/ survival pack. I have a second, batwing cup in my wilderness pack but it’s nested around another canteen. Pathfinder products are scattered throughout all my bags, kits, and packs. In the deep wilderness, or any time your life depends on your equipment, it pays to get the best products out there.
The bottle, cup and stove set are part of my backpacking set that I never leave at home. I have used them for years, abused them, and they are still rock solid. It is all I need for cooking and drinking.
SRO gear rocks! Been using that kettle every week for years now. Use the screen upside down in the winter inside my bush pot with cold food in foil suspended on the screen to steam warm it. Great for reheating ground venison taco meat on the wood stove.
Yes! This idea of the nesting strainer-basket and lid from the, Kettle set are great pieces to join other pieces of kit; I've been wanting to call SRO for years to ask about that idea, just not often available when I'm home from work. Very good move I believe that you folks are going to be doing that soon; thanks Dave and SRO family!
I've had the large canteen kit for almost 4 years now and still haven't had any problems. Yes they get black, but an SOS pad later they are good as new.
Are those two new canteen cups (early vietnam style + D-rings and the butterfly handle cup) already out now or still in prototype phase? Where can I get those? (Do you have a direct link?) Do you ship to Germany? Thank you very much
Hey Dave I have both sets. I carry the bottle and cup set in my edc pack side pocket. I've just recently started carrying the canteen set. Just to let you know it will fit in the Hill People Gear bottle pouch. I was told it would not fit the canteen set but it does. Lid on botom, canteen cup and stove nest together. Theres a bungee cord lock on top that holds it in.I carry it on the prairie belt with molle attachment.
Great Products. I like a combination of the two. Canteen cook set in my canteen carrier or in my haversack. Canteen set is my food cooking set. And what I drink from while hiking. Then one bottle cook set in one of the pockets of my back pack. Then a second bottle for the pocket on the other side. This is what I make coffee in. My brew setup. This way I can be cooking and making coffee at the same time. With just one set my food or coffee gets cold. This gives me over 3/4 of a gallon of water. Most of the time I use Trangia type burners with both sets. By the way the Canteen stove makes a good digging tool.
I recently acquired the canteen cook set. Tested it for leaks with positive results (no leaks). Dave is correct about tweaking the tabs on the cup to ensure a good lock up. I would suggest making those tabs a bit longer to enhance the friction lock up. Other than that this kit is outstanding. I also have a couple Pathfinder bottle kits with carrying pouches. The pouches are very roomy for carrying extra stuff in addition to the bottle kit. They have a water resistant lining, also. I have a couple of similar water bootle pouches made by another manufacturer which due to a thin layer of insulation aren't quite as voluminous as the Pathfinder pouches so fitting a 32 oz bottle inside is no problem until I try to add a nesting cup. Got my first PKS knife a couple years ago and have added 2 more since along with the Pathfinder water containers/cook kits and a Pathfinder skillet and I haven't been disappointed.
I own two of each set, complete. Both are awesome and like Dave says both have advantages and disadvantages between each other. One thing is for certain, just like all Pathfinder SS cookware both sets are of exceptional quality and, once you buy one you're gonna want the other....so might as well buy both....you won't be disappointed. Great products!!! Excellent video Dave!
The 64 Oz water bottle cup which is 48 Oz will hold the 32 Oz cup and parts too. I like that bat wing cup for the army canteen. Hope that comes out soon.
The bottle set is fantastic and fits great in my helikon tex mk2 rig. And there's a grayl/pathfinder nesting cup in the other bottle holder the mk2 has
This just solved a problem I had w a cook kit I put together w your PFM40 Swiss Army Mess Kit. I added an extra canteen cup , lid and alcohol stove inside the kit which left me: a cup, a pan and a pot. Fairly robust and complete except for one thing: a container. The simple upside down extra canteen cup over the top of the canteen gives me a cup, cook pot AND a container🎉😃 Both of these set ups , the PFM40 and double cup canteen BOTH fit perfectly inside the Pathfinder MOLLE Bag😃
Nice. I have two bottle set and well pleased. I also have vintage WWII canteen cups sets ane well pleased with them as well. I had to buy recent production stoves for the canteen sets. Not a perfect fit but works.
Hey Dave, Giant fan, I myself only shop with SRO. And I went with the bottle/stove/cup/lid set with the fishmouth spreader. I keep a multitude of things inside the bottle when I'm not using it to carry water. It goes perfect with my Duluth haversack too.
I have them both and love them both. Like you said there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I love all the gear you make it's all wonderful and great quality.
I have both but when I’m at work I have the canteen on my harness mainly because I like the cup with it more for putting in a fire melting snow or making coffee on the fly but I do use the round water bottle alot when I have a back pack mainly because it just fits the outer pockets better for me
Nice Gear, and one of the “ 3- C’s” I learned from your teachings for survival; Cover, Container, Combustion. The US Military sure trains you guys with fantastic bushcraft skills. I think you’re great for sharing! 🇨🇦🙂👍
Great video I’ve been contemplating while setting up an emergency ultra light pack for my boat the last few days, waiting from an order from you to arrive tomorrow, love your videos and approach, big thumbs up from an old boy from Harlan Ky, keep up the fine work sir.
Amazing level of design thought and detail attention in these products! DoD should contract with Pathfinder on all their basic camping equipment procurements.
I have both of these items and I have used the bottle set much more than the canteen set mainly because I day hike much more and use the bottle set to drink from and a quick lunch or Ramen noodles. The alcohol stove is perfect for this since we are in open fire restrictions so much of the time. Both of them are great items for backpacking and camping.
The hiking aspect is where it loses me. The point is that it all nests together, but if you're out hiking, you need a bottle of water ready to drink....not a bottle nested and packed away. Do you just not drink or are you adding excess weight by carrying additional water?
@@Swearengen1980 yes, I do carry an additional bottle of water for quick swallows during my hike. Personally, I’ve never bought into the weight obsession. If I was hiking the AT, weight would be a factor. But, for a 4 hour day hike, I can handle an additional 6 or 8 ounces. I don’t buy ultra-light equipment and I use a 5”, stainless steel Firebox stove. So, yeah, I bring extra drinking water. When I was a Boy Scout, my backpack weighed more than I did. LOL.
@@elderhiker7787 I'm not a big nitpicker on weight either. It's just that if you piece all these types of videos together for everything you "should" have, you do end up with a 50 lb pack. Staying at a reasonable 25-30 lbs of gear isn't "weight obsession", not like the people who try to get to 10 lbs. I actually do hike long distances (like the AT), as well camp, hunt, etc. I try to make most of my purchases multi-functional (excluding fire/cooking), so weight to some degree does factor in and I have to pick and choose which areas I do need to go ultra light on. Really it comes down to, I don't consider a 4 hour hike to camp "backpacking". If they claim a gear is meant for backpacking, then it should be convenient and intended to be used often, easily accessible, over long distances for days at a time.
What you say makes absolute sense. I use the South African version of the bottle set on small hikes but use the SADF canteen set for overnighters and more self sustaining purposes when outdoors for a lengthy period of time.
Great updates on Bottle & Canteen set. We tweak items we bought to our specification & usages in the outback & rescue mission. Both are excellent set, it's just preference. Cheers DC from Australia.
Out of all my cool bits of kit, my canteen set is one of my most beloved. Not flashy, not expensive, but beautiful in its own rite. A joy to use and I have 100% confidence in it.
Hey Dave, when does the new canteen cup with the bat wings come out? On the website it is still the older model? I love your idea of combining the two for a more complete cook system. Love your stuff and your products, keep up the awesome work and gear.
I would like to ask the same question! Dave, I can't find the "new" cup for the "big" canteen kit anywhere. WHERE and WHEN will I be able to buy this special extra cup? Please let us know! It's time to have it😂! Greatings from northern Germany!
I like the Pathfinder Canteen cook set as I don't like backpacks, I prefer a waist pack or shoulder bag. I have the shoulder bag that suits the canteen cook set. The same bag suits the Pathfinder PFM40 Swedish mess kit that I take motorcycle touring. I like the idea of the 2nd batwing handle canteen cup on top, I had not thought of that. Thank you for sharing👍
I've used the canteen set for years. It pairs well with a German style mess kit, for the extra pot and cups. However, an extra cup might replace this setup for me.
I bought the pathfinder canteen set, w the old school handle, I love it. I keep it in a old French military canteen cover because it withdraws perfectly while on the belt and drops right back in just like an old USGI.
I’ve been using the bottle set for a while now and the bottle stove with an alcohol stove. Problem is it requires modifying so that the space between the stove and the bottle/ mug is increased, otherwise the boil time takes way too long and wastes fuel. I would love to see an updated version to the stove that would address this.
I got the big canteenset (bottle, canteen, stove, lid spork, firesteel, alcoholflask, firepads, bottle hook, sandstone ballistic bag) some years now and still love this set. I use the lid of the infernopad canteen as a alcohol tray, add some dry woodpellets on the bottom, some alcohol. 1 strike firesteel flame, put the stove over and got a 10-15 minute burn to cook something in urban conditions.. that can be extended by adding more woodpellets. Added a SAK, flash light, lighter, stainless straw, a small fixed knife, a mri ...my car kit. Got also a bottle stove added on a diy bottle kit ( mixed brands) for hiking.
I use the round one with my EDC maxpedition Versa pack. The water bottle, cup and stove nested in the water bottle pouch. The trick to get the cup and stove out of the tight pouch is to put your fist inside each pull them past the metal grommet.
🎉🎉Great video. By far the best complete set I've seen. All nests together perfectly. Very well developed. Largest cup I've seen. More like a bushcraft pot
The VDV canteen set is great because it provides two cups and lets you still drink out of the canteen without moving the cups. I find I don't need two cups frequently, so I stick with the greater volume and durability of the steel SRO canteen set.
Great video and designs. I’ve never had any of those plastic canteens (not counting later Nalgene variants) which EVER quit tasting like plastic. Especially if it was a 2nd quart on a hot day or later.
Yeah, you never shake the plastic/chemical taste no matter what brand plastic. The only plastic "canteen" that works without the taste problem are those "Smart Water" bottles which are big with UL thru-hiker types if going with a "canteen" setup.
Thanks for doing this video. I have both canteen and the water bottle. I was wondering if you would release a new item that you used in an old show dirty rotten survival the water desalinator?
Dave, thanks for doing this video! I've been torn between them. So might as well get both!
You do know that means you better spend some time in the woods. 👍👍
@SelfRelianceOutfit I try to everyday!
I have both, you won't go wrong

Plate, stove, bush pot etc. Great gear. Canada.
I thought this was going to be a vid just about canteens and bottles, but wow what a lot more . Very very cool, thanks.
I've been debating which one to buy for so long! I guess the canteen does make more sense for the campfire. Thanks Dave
Can't go wrong with either one. I would suggest a fish mouth spreader for placing and removing either one from a camp fire.
I never go into the woods without one of these, usually the canteen set. The stove makes a good water pre-filter too. Truly essential kit

VERY timely as deciding which to purchase. Thanks!
Yes, getting BOTH a good idea!!
You can use the stove as a scraper for fero rods as well using the oval holes.
you can use the edge of the pot stand also or a sharp rock I dont carry the pot stand tho the striker that comes with these new sets is very nice
Very clever yet beneficial designs that make a lot of sense! 👍

I bought the pathfinder canteen set, w the old school handle, I love it. I keep it in a old French military canteen cover because it withdraws perfectly while on the belt and drops right back in just like an old USGI.
I have the canteen and love it!
I love my pks Kephart as well!
Thanks for all the hard work Yinz fellas put in to help us out!
Appreciate it!
Thank you, the Kephart is a great choice!
There's one now
I'm gonna need two canteens to balance out for hip carry plus a banjo on my back. A spork would be a big plus.
Can you please sell both styles of canteen cups separately?
Thanks for doing this video. I have both canteen and the water bottle. I was wondering if you would release a new item that you used in an old show dirty rotten survival the water desalinator?
Thanks for this!
Looking forward for the addons for my on sets. Thanks for quality outdoor gear.
Very informative
I have the bottle, stove, Trangier burner and two cups in the Pathfinder bottle carrier bag.
Any plans to bring the titanium bottle/cup set back?
If anyone is interested the helikon tex essentials kit bag fits the pathfinder canteen set fairly well.
