Does anyone know if the Source water bottle attachment works on these?
I went to their page to make sure because I had heard mixed opinions(no one gave clear facts in an hour long debate). While they do not list any known metal bottles, nalgene bottles ARE on there. Best bet would be to contact Source directly and ask point blank if they fit/work on the Pathfinder bottles.
I do not believe it would fit as the lid/mouth size is a bit smaller than a standard Nalgene bottle.
Nice one
Good review buddy, thanks. I find the 32 oz is not enough for me. I have the klean kanteen 40 oz. It fits inside my titanium 700 pot.
For a belt u gotta put molly strap thru plastic d rings and put ur belt thru
I've been looking at both, wondering which one. Your evaluation and presentation gave me the information I need to make a decision. What I am looking for, is a survival kit for my float plane. A single package that I can pack with the 10 C's, some coffee, sugar, freeze dried food, dry soup pouches and Cliff bars, and a small Sawyer water filter, just in case I have to put down on a lake because of mechanical or weather issues, which has happened in the past. (weather) It seems like the canteen version is the best fit. I would remove the green canteen liner as redundant, to use the extra space. Then fill the canteen with the emergency food supplies so that it's safe from bugs or rodents getting at it as it will sit in the back of the airplane all summer. Thanks for the review, and Cheers from Winnipeg.
I'm glad I could help. My friend has a plane and he did the same thing. He likes the wide mouth of the canteen because he can fit bigger stuff inside the bottle. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as he does.
I have the water bottle kit but I have it in the molle pouch
I use the canteen and it's very good. The green case is useful because you can put it on your belt for easy access and it holds the cup and canteen together.
@@etvonrashke3763so how did that cashe bottle hold up?
Simple honest, sincere review by a pleasant chap, thanks
Thank You so much for watching. I truly appreciate the Support.
The rings on the back allow for it to be attached via clips to your belt as well if your familiar with the mostly associated Vietnam Era, "H" or "Y" Harness for your direct level 2 gear. Level 3 - Pack Contents, Level - 2 LBV/LBE Gear, Level - 1 Gear in trousers, pockets, attached to uniform belt.
Thank you for the great video and comparison!
The D rings on the back of the canteen pouch are to make it easier to
Mount on belts of different width sizes. Also, you can adjust how high or low you want the pouch to sit!
Couldn't Molle Webbing do the same thing? I'm not a fan of the D rings personally but I'm sure just like everything else it's a personal preference.
I have been using the canteen kit for years. And that style cup most of my life. I never figured out that form in the handle trick. Excellent! Thank you.
It really is a cool little trick. You just have to be careful and make sure you have a solid fork.
You did a very thorough job of comparing the pros and cons of the two systems. I learned a bit from your explanations, despite having owned a canteen, and used one, for over 50 years. Thanks very much for sharing. I subbed.
I'm really glad I could share something new with you. I'm sure I could learn a lot from you as well. Thank you so much for watching and all of the support it really means a lot to me.
This was more thorough than Canterbury’s review! Thank you!

I appreciate your video detailing the two different set-ups! I've been assembling a pack to run double duty for my get-home bag and outdoors and I had been trying to figure out what I wanted to use for a water carrier. Thanks to this I went with the Pathfinder bottle kit. Hopefully it'll serve me well out in the field!

Excellent review-thank you!

I love your attention to detail. You bring up points in your comparison that other people overlook like using the fork as a handle extension for the canteen cup, the lip in the canteen that can cause bacteria build up if not properly cleaned, among other points. I appreciate your analysis. You have gained a new subscriber.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. I really do appreciate your feedback.
Great review, very comprehensive thanks!

I owned 2 of the kidney shaped canteens you show. The first had the old bakelite cap and the rubber gasket gave the water a bad taste. They fixed this issue with the canteen later. I tried to boil water in it and the seam failed where the top and the bottom halves of the canteen come together. I bought the second one later and had the upgraded cap and gasket. I coated the inside with beeswax to prevent a leak at the seal but now I can't heat water in it. This is not an issue since I've been using the GI issue plastic canteen since 1976.
Excellent video, well made and informative, I'm subscribing!
I always use my cup for cooking. I haven't found a reason to put the canteen itself into the fire. The weld is definitely its weak spot. You have a full canteen of water or the heat will affect that weld. I'm dad had a plastic canteen with the cup that rests on top.
nice job straight to the point
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Love it Bro. Full in depth and thorough ;) You're good at giving full details :)

Excellent detailed review of the pros and cons of both products..Was a big help in me deciding on which one will work for me!
Which one did you pick?
@@newageselfreliance
Well even though the canteen kit is nice and has more pouch accessories I went with the water bottle kit for the non worry factor of having to extra clean the bottle itself "seamless on the inside"
I purchased a Helikon Foxtrot MK2 for my bottle kit to make up for the less pouch accessories
Thank you soo much for this vid; I e been waiting for this comparison for 2 years. Uve asked every TT host on every channel I'm subbed to just to tell me their opinion on which works better in the field, I didnt even request a vid on it but not ONE responded to that ques. So again thank you. My friend told me what the d rings were for but I have a raging flu and wasnt pating attention, I'll up date that info asap. Now, going back to bed to sweat out this darn fever.
I hope you get better. People are saying that the D-rings are for easy molle attachment, however, I think they kinda get in the way of everything else. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I try to answer every comment.
Great video. Trying to decide between the two. This has been very helpful. Probably going to go for the Canteen kit.
I really like the Canteen kit. I have used the water bottle kit the most but that's only because I've owned it longer.
Thanks for a great review! You covered everything I wanted to know. I will get the bottle instead of the canteen. My decision came down to the lip folding outside for the bottle. I feel that it makes the bottle easier to maintain and more sanitary.
The rolled lip on the canteen is so you can still use the fish mouth spreaders as a bail handle. That said I always use the bottle. It feels more natural drinking from a bottle than a bean-shaped canteen.
I haven’t received any notifications about your new videos for many weeks. I’ve had that bell set to notify me every time, but zilch. I thought you’d just stopped making vids, went to your channel, and noticed the MANY new vids. Have no idea why, but after realizing I’d not received any updates from your channel, I checked several of my other “notify me of all new videos” subs, and same thing: lots of new videos that I’m not being notified about.
Glad to see your still at it. 👍
I will be here every Sunday and Thursday until they kick me out lol. I need subs to grow as a channel but being a sub doesn't do anything for you guys. The bell is a joke as well. What's the point of having features and never using them? Also, why judge the success of a person's channel based on the same features that don't work? I will never understand UA-cam. I'm just gonna keep making videos and see what happens.
I bought the Canteen Kit specifically for the canteen pouch. If you arrange the molly straps on the back of the canteen pouch correctly, they form two strong belt loops, and I like keeping my canteen on my belt. I keep an emergency space blanket, and the Pathfinder fire starters with it, and a few yards of bankline. My Mora Light My Fire lives right next to it on my belt. So for that extra $5 I have a basic survival kit on my belt, and a food pouch. On long day hikes I usually tie an Eno hammock or a tarp to the bottom of the pouch.
It is a really great heavy duty pouch. Caroline likes to store her whole cook system in it. It holds everything with a lot of room to spare. Thank you so much for watching I really appreciate the support.
@@newageselfreliance if I'm not mistaken, the outer pouch is available by itself from SRO.
Outstanding review and video! Great attention to detail and explanation of pros and cons both systems. Just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work!
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you so much for the support.
Nice kits & great review, I too like Pathfinder products. The D rings on the back of the large canteen cook set pouch also allow you to run the straps through them & then mount on your belt/pistol belt. It serves well to strap it to your belt & then use in conjunction with the shoulder strap as well then it comes into its own & works great - Marco
Thank You so much for your feedback I really appreciate your support.
Excellent comparison. It helped me a lot on which to buy and use for my camp outs.
Which one did you pick?

Thank you very much for your clear, enlightening and honest presentation. I hope I can like your vid 100 times! 🇵🇭
Slip the straps inside the D rings, snap them in. Then use the D rings to attach the pouch to something. (In the event the straps don't fit the situation.)
It's actually very smart. Great review bud. Very thorough and well done. Thanks for the video.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Couldn't you do the same thing with standard Molle webbing though?
@@newageselfreliance Yup. Different design. I'd ask the company directly. They would probably be very willing to give you the full explanation on why D rings. Happy New Year!

Nice comparison of those two products, although we agree that they are pretty similar if not exactly the same except some little difference. You basically clarified some issues I was wondering about and with that being said you have help me make up my mind. I am going for the Pathfinder Stainless Steel water bottle kits. Thank You Wolf Pack well done mate.
I'm really glad I could help. I use the Water Bottle system the most. It just feels more natural drinking from a bottle than a canteen.

Great job doing the comparison.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
Such an honest straightforward review. Just helping folks understand so they can make their own choice. Both are great options. I have had the Pathfinder canteen kit for a while and it has been excellent. I ordered a Firebox Nano from Selfreliance outfitters a couple days ago with their special and it happens to come with the SS cup you have in this video. I have a Nalgean bottle for a separate kit that goes with a GSI cup. Will see if the Pathfinder cup is preferred over the GSI cup. If so It will replace it since I understand it will also nest with a Nalgean.
Yep, it will nest really well with your Nalgene bottle. The only complaint I have with the cup is the handles. I like the type of handles the GSI has better than the "bat wings" on the Pathfinder. I have a BattlBox cup that is a ripoff from the Pathfinder cups but it has the GSI style handles. I like how much longer they are and how the rest higher up on the cup so they don't get as hot when pulling them off the fire.
@@newageselfreliance Agree that the GSI has nice handles that stay put. My GSI cup is the 20 oz. I noticed that they are now making a slightly larger 24oz of the same cup. My 20oz is not quite big enough to comfortably do Ramen noodle. 24oz would be just right for Ramen. I may get that one and use the Pathfinder lid with it. Perhaps drill a couple holes for the fish spreader bail.
Awesome Review dude! love it.. you really made the decision for me! thanks man! had a hard time finding a good steel bottle. this is great! answered all my questions and showed all the cool stuff it can do!
Glad I could help!
This is one of your best presented videos m8

The poly liner in the canteen space is also a rain fly/dust protector as well as for keeping small things from falling out during stressful, physical activities like fighting bears and cougars... Enjoyed the comparison video and you did a great job.
That makes a lot of sense. I don't really use the liner myself but I know Caroline always uses it. She is always worried about things falling out or not attaching the clip correctly. For her, it's more of a redundant closer. Thank You so much for watching and sharing your knowledge I really appreciate it.
Thanks for the review. Very thoroughly done. I have a pathfinder cup I nest with my Stanley Cup system.
I did a video on that Stanley cup system. If you pair the Cup system with the adventure kit you have one sold kit for two people. Probably one of the best. ua-cam.com/video/PctB7SJtS0Y/v-deo.html
Excellent presentation: Well done.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video.
Excellent review. Appears you received some good responses concerning the d-rings on the back of the canteen pouch, good way to engage your audience.
The tight lid fit on the bottle cup is probably designed to prevent spillage if the cup tips over in the fire or is accidentally knocked over. Not as much of an issue with the handle design on the canteen cup.
I have a US Army canteen that belonged to my Mom (an Army Nurse in WWII) and have never had an issue with seams leaking, although today it mostly sits on a shelf but was my main canteen for about 20 years plus during her service.
Good tip on the lip of the canteen and possible bacteria collection.
Overall a good fair comparison of these container systems. Thank you for sharing.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Having a WWII Canteen is a treasure and being your moms must make it extremely special.
Wolf Pack Woodcraft Yes, and now I am old enough / smart enough to understand what my Mom meant when I asked to use the canteen. “Water only tastes good out of an old aluminum canteen when you are in the Philippine jungle.” Trust me, there is a good reason it now sits on a shelf. 😀
Wow this review was actually damn good. The info about the seams and lips help me decide!
Which one did you decide on? I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Couldn't decide which one of these to get, so I got both. Thanks.
Great Choice. What do you think of them?
@@newageselfreliance Well, I ordered both. Supposed to be here later this week.
Either system is great, but I love the canteen. Much easier to grasp and hold when opening & closing than the round bottle. I also prefer the canteen's pouch as you can fit a complete PSK (personal survival kit) in it including a 5X7' tarp, an emergency poncho and a micro bivy for a very rudimentary shelter system, not to mention a micro fishing kit, fire kit, FAK, food packets, compass, bail wire, etc... Great thorough review and comparison. 👍🏻
Yeah, the canteen pouch can hold way more than the water bottle can. The straight sides make the pockets a better shape for fitting different things as well.
Your description of the "original" (for lack of a better term) military canteen and its radial, top-to-bottom seams overlooked something. What you described is the late-war aluminum canteens. They were less-than-successful because, in addition to developing the leaks you described, would easily dent/collapse.
The original, stainless steel, US military canteens were seamed together horizontally, exactly the way the Pathfinder canteen is assembled. That's why I seek out, and use, them to this very day. After extensive cleaning/sanitizing, of course.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have older military canteens but both the ones I own are plastic. When did they switch to stainless steel?
Great review!
A few mods I’ve learned ... drill your own holes in the canteen cover to give you the correct straining configuration. Use a bandana around the water bottle stove to help pull it out of the pouch.
Thanks again for the great review.
The bandana trick works really well. I discovered it by accident I threw my bandana into the pouch when it was empty and it just so happened to land in a way to easily get the cup out. It works really well.
That's what I do with my Stanley cook set that comes with the 2 green cups.
I got the Canteen kit last year, and I love it. I was looking to buy the bottle kit as well this year, but they changed the bottle bag to black for some reason, so I'm hesitant to get one. Great video!
I don't know why companies are making everything black. Ursack only sells black bags and now the Pathfinder bags only come in black. I don't know why you would wanna put your food or water in a hot black bag?
This is one of the most thorough comparison videos I have seen for these kits. I put together a bottle kit trading gear on a facebook group and ended up with the pathfinder cup / lid / fish mouth spreader, an off brand bottle pouch, and a 40oz Klean Kanteen. I am pretty happy with it, but I don't have a pot stand like yours. I made one out of some wire coat hanger, mostly for use with my Trangia spirit burner. After this vid I have sub'd. Cheers man.
The pot stand works really well but at the end of the day, it is just thin metal circle with a top. The best part about it is that it fits around the nesting cup and takes up no extra space. I like using the Pathfinder alcohol stove myself. I like how it is much bigger than the Trangia and can hold a lot more fuel. All in all, I would say you have a really great kit. Thank You so much for watching and for all the support it really means a lot.
@@newageselfreliance I looked at the pathfinder alcohol stove but the cost to get it here in Canada was prohibitive given the Trangia was around $20. So far I am very happy with the kit. Cheers

Very thorough review of both systems. With the water bottle kit nest the stove right side up on the bottle it will save you from having to dig it out of the bottom.
I have done that before. I just use the water bottle way more than I use the stove. So having to get the stove off the bottom on a rare occasion is easier than taking the stove off every time I use the water bottle.
Thanks mate all the way from australia great thorough presentation
Glad you enjoyed it
Great review. Thank you for the details. I bought the Canteen Pouch separate and use it with my water bottle and it gives me a lot more room to add some other items.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. They use to sell the canteen pouch with the water bottle as a system. I don't know why they stopped.
😂Fighting Mt.Lions always carry Cat Nip in a Ziplock Bag,The Lions turn into big ole Puddy Cats ,Loving and Kind😂😂😂.
Thanks for doing such a detailed comparison of the two bottle systems. I appreciated the extra info on the fold overs at the mouth of the containers and the inner seam on the canteen for being possible cleaning issue pain points. I know the bottles go through different incremental upgrades in design. Be curious to see if three years on this is the same issue.
I think the reason the canteen folds the way they do is so that you can use a fishmouth spreader as a bail. I'm not sure if they changed the design but there was a reason for it being the way it was. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video.
Great review! Thanks!

Ive looked at the pathfinder canteen for awhile. Great video brother.
Thank You so much. Yeah, it really is a nice kit. A little pricey but not as bad as the Heavy Cover Titanium option. I would recommend it. The build quality of the canteen, cup, lid, and stove are really good but I wish I would have saved the money and got a different molle pouch for it right away.

Awesome details!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Do the D-rings hold the canteen tight on your belt? I imagine it would bounce around a lot.
really good overview and comparison. I didn't see anything with either that an easy modification couldn't fix. Gorilla tape on the cup handles, drilling holes or spreader slots in the canteen lid, etc. I have a Go Time Gear bottle bag with a Blackthorn-USA bottle nested in a Toaks 500ml cup. The bottle bag is so narrow it is a fight to get the Toaks cup, or any other, out. I settled on a pull string (wide ribbon really) and it helps somewhat. I use the same pull system to get my 100G propane can out of my Stanley too. Great video, thx.
You can get just the Water Bottle Bag for about $28 www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/products/pathfinder-bottle-bag-gen3-black It only comes in black at the moment. I don't know if they changed colors or if they are gonna offer different colors. The larger bag really is nice for carrying the extra gear and easily getting everything in and out.

Excellent product knowledge very thorough.

I really like this comparison, I had the Pathfinder bottle setup but left my system in AU when I moved to US :P kicking myself now.
I like the bottle system because it’s easier to carry and fits in most built in bottle pouches on backpacks without looking like a prepper nutcase, but the canteen style (Which I’m not used to) holds a little more and looks like it fits together more tightly which is preferred.
They both make great options. I like drinking out of the water bottle better which is why I choose that one most of the time. The canteen does hold 7 more ounces of water.
Nice presentation. You obviously know the product, pros & cons,
Design features and advantages.
I'm shopping for a mess kit & will probably get the canteen to fit the helikon tex essentials kit bag.
I just looked up the Helikon Tex kit bag and now I want one lol. Is the build quality as good as it looks?
Thanks for this video it was very helpful.

I have both, still use both. I do not have the canteen bag just a U.S. GI pouch wish I did have the bag it was sold out when I bought mine. They both seem heavy when full of water but hold enough to last through a pretty long day hike. I prefer to cook in the canteen cup, but the water bottle looks less like an army wannabe when in polite society like a state park. Both great kits !
I really like both systems I just end up using the Water Bottle kit a lot more just because it's whgat I'm use to. Thank You so much for watching I really appreacdiaet the support.

@@newageselfreliance any thoughts on the 64oz vs the 32oz?
I like the 32oz myself. The 64 is bigger and heavier and when you add water to it the thing must be a tank to carry. Living in Minnesota and never being far from a water source I like the 32oz because of it's a smaller size and it carries enough water for me to only have to fill it once or twice a day. I really have no need to carry large quantities of water at a time. From what I can tell the bottles are the exact same thing only one is bigger so I would have no issues buying the 64oz based on quality alone but I just don't need that large of a container. I hope this helped. Thank You so much for support it really means a lot to me.
Great review. There was a lot of useful, practical information. I think I am leaning more towards the canteen kit. Also, you do realize that you can put straining holes in the lid, right? You just need the right drill bit.
I really appreciate your support. I'm glad I could help. I like to review products "as is" so people watching can see exactly what they are getting. That way they can decide if the product is worth upgrading or if they should find something better.
Good review, I learned something :) Thanks
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video.
I just utilize my M1956 (ILCE) system from Vietnam. Has served me well all these years.
I have one of those as well. From the Vietnam war. I never use it because I don't want anything to happen to it but I know they are really nice pieces of kit.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
You did a good job reviewing these products. I would like to point out some information for you. David Canterbury points out in a couple of his videos the importance of why the water bottle is 32 oz. All the forms of water purification is based on 32 oz. so there is no chance the lay person would make a mistake out in the wilderness on how much water to chemical they had. Personally I would think that information is kind of important .
I think chemical treating water should be treated like wild mushrooms. If you're not 100% certain what you are doing, you shouldn't risk trying. One of the worst things that can happen when you are out in the wilderness is getting sick.
Great review, I bought the canteen kit only today as an upgrade to my stanley adventure cup and nalgene and twig stove, it was getting a bit bulky.
Having a system that nests together saves a ton of room in the pack. I'm sure you are really gonna enjoy the new system.
Right, I have no idea why I watched this video - however, it is a brilliant review on the differences/similarities.
If I ever wanted this kind of set up, I now know which one I would get. 👍
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. I appreciate your support.
Awesome in-depth review
Glad you liked it!
@@newageselfreliance I did, and I bought the 32oz bottle kit 2 days ago. Clean Water is #1
Have you gotten it in hand yet? How do you like it so far? also make sure to test that the lid doesn't leak. Mine has worked perfectly for years now but some people say they have issues with the lid not sealing.
@@newageselfreliance Wont get it till next month. just shipped yesterday. I hope it dont leak. I'll let you know
