Either one works, live worms probably are more eye-catching but if they know that the feeder has them, they'll learn quickly they're still food after just one visit c:

I designed and crafted a house sparrow-proof mealworm feeder that's shown on a video on my channel, if you want to check it out sometime. About 3 minutes and 30 seconds into the video, a Carolina Wren shows a male house sparrow in the video how to retrieve a mealworm from the feeder.

@@roeg9320 House sparrows are among just a few bird species that are not protected by federal law as they are considered by law to be invasive. They are among backyard birders most despised birds as they bully almost all federally protected birds at birdseed and mealworm feeders, and absolutely ruin the backyard birding hobby for many people that participate in it. Somewhat in their defense,
house sparrows seem to be innately hard-wired for how they treat and interact with other birds at feeders. So, I guess to a degree their various aggressive behaviors may be something they can't necessarily control, if that makes sense. If you watch the video on my channel showing my sparrow-proof mealworm feeder, you will see how frustrated the male house sparrow is that can't retrieve a mealworm from my feeder. And, you will also see his aggressive behavior towards the Carolina Wren in the video that was able to retrieve a mealworm Also, you can do a search on youtube concerning how to control or dissuade house sparrows at bird feeders and you will see a number of videos on the subject, and most, if not all of them are recommended solutions that only work for a limited time, or not at all. My mealworm feeder may be the only device invented that actually works, so at the end of the day house sparrows are going to have their way the other 99.99% of the time at other seed and mealworm feeders.

Your feeding them everything that poisons or kills them rice can get stuck in there throat cooked rice is even worse and salt and bannanas are also bad.
