I started with feeling sorry for local wintering birds, so I made a feeder from a milk jug. Now with multiple feeders, suet cages, bird bath etc, I have attracted 30 species to the yard. I see chickadees, nut hatches (red and white breasted), hairy and downey wood peckers, flickers, almost every day, certainly several times every week of the year. Spring and fall brings warblers, and finches through, as well as multiple species of sparrow. Coolest so far was a Lazuli Bunting. Such a colorful blue, manage some great photos. Thank you so much for the lovely informative video. Learnt so much today :) I want more birds to visit my Garden. The Local council has given permission to builders to erect dwellings so they have destroyed the natural habitats which had been here for ages. We used to even have deer and squirrels coming to the gardens. Now they all have disappeared. I am trying to encourage at least a few species to come to the gardens. So far, Red Kites, Starlings, Tits, Black birds,Robins, Finches, Sparrows, Collard doves, Wood Pigeons,Green and red Woodpeckers and even Malard ducks have taken an interest. Food classification and feeder styles were very useful.. Thank you so much.

Wow! I live in michigan and ive feed the birds for 40 plus years and ive never seen round suet balls or pellets and feeders in cages ive never seen! The feeders are awesome! I need those!

Lovely filming of birds and squirrels. I just wanted something soothing to watch like garden birds, as lockdown anxiety and negative news stories were getting to me.
Brilliant, we spend a small fortune on food, it's beautiful and relaxing to watch, we also have Stavros the squirrel and his mate who come along, everyone enjoys a feed, I make sure not all the feeders are squirrel proof for that reason.
Excellent video and I loved the close-ups of the birds. It was particularly useful to know about mealy worms as I must admit to not having tried feeding them to our birds. Rats are the main problem with the bird feeders for us - we are torn between not wanting to encourage the rats while supporting the birds.
We once had a problem with rodents climbing up a wooden pergola on which the feeders were hanging off nails we banged into the upright beams, but the problem stopped when I re-sited them as hanging feeders from the beams at the top. In the mid-winter I was filling different feeders with either seed mixes, peanuts or fat balls, and once one was emptied I'd wash it out thoroughly to get it clean and pristine before refilling and rehanging it. We'd get a lot of great tits and blue tits but also a variety of other species. More recently we've had a problem with grey squirrels reaching feeders, and there are plenty of magpies and crows or rooks which like to inhabit the taller trees. I witnessed an amusing stand-off between an intrepid young tree-climbing cat and an indignant magpie a while back; the cat backed down eventually. The most common visitors to my garden seem to be blackbirds, whose song I love, pairs of waddling collared doves or wood pigeons and in winter a robin which loves to sit nearby whenI'm doing anything out there,in the home that I'll turn up a nice juicy worm. I've also been trying to encourage hedgehogs,of which there used to be loads but now there sadly seem to be hardly any :-( Too many cars, too many town foxes?
@Strummer Edwards That's true, ha, ha, ha! Stick to the rats. Cats are much worse for birds. Solve one problem and create another. Maybe a dog will keep both cats and rats away.

An occasional black or grey squirrel too. I put out food for squirrels on the other side - front yard. They should not starve either! One mated pair of M Doves decided to sit on my large flat tray feeder (that I built myself) and actually laid an egg on it!!! Now I have to build them a permanent nest. They are so very sweet and affectionate, like pets. This is incredibly valuable knowledge. I am so glad I saw this video. I will be looking into your products soon! Many thanks from California!!

I have learnt a lot from watching this video. Doves tend to crowd out the smaller birds in my garden so will be getting a special feeder to keep them out...
Thank you so much for this video. I've found it very useful and will feed a wider range of foods and in a wider range of feeders to enable more birds to eat in my garden. Vera from Northern Ireland.
Great tutorial, very specific and step by step, overall, a very very good tutorial, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes taking pictures, someone who loves gardening, or just basically anyone. Keep it up! +1 sub
An alternative to peanuts is peanut butter. I have a three inch diameter, eight inch long piece of wood that was cut from a broken branch in which I used a Forstner bit to drill four holes going down the wood in a zig-zag pattern. I fill the holes with peanut butter and some birds can't get enough - especially the woodpeckers.
@@lorettamoran125 I'm not sure where you got that idea about peanut butter, but birds have tongues which helps get the peanut butter down. www.thespruce.com/can-birds-eat-peanut-butter-4053751 www.birdsandblooms.com/birding/birding-basics/type-peanut-butter-ok-birds/
I've been feeding birds for 2 years now. The biggest challenge here are grey squirrels. They're cute too but a nuisance when it comes to feeding birds. I developped my own design that make it nearly impossible for them to reach ny hanging bird feeder. It's basically a disc platform on top of the suspended feeder with a clever design that keeps it horizontal. When a squirrel tries to descend on it will swing sideways under the weight. it's quite an ingenious design and fun to watch. Some aggressive squirrel will still try to jump 2 meters to get to the feeder like a cliffhanger but picking an isolated tree branch has eliminated that. The truth is unless it's a caged system the only way to keep squirrels away is to feed them something separate. As soon as they run out of that food they will relentlessly try to assault the birdfeeder. They're very good learners and as is well known extremely persistent . If they succeed only one time, they will know how to forever. There was one such squirrel last year, i called him houdini, nothing could stop him. He would jump 3 meters, do impossible acrobatics. I even wrapped thorny vines around the feeder, black locust thorns 4 inch long on the feeder mounted rigidily vertically so it could not land on it. That was like nothing to the squirrel. I've seen houdini landing on these thorns unharmed. They have thick skin. Then finally i didn't see Houdini for a while. Then i saw a squirrel with wounds on the side that looked like a hawk talons and it looked infected he had lost all the fur on that side. But was still moving quick and energetically, but didn't see him more. I assume he died. The younger new generation of squirrel are much softer and tamer they are no match for the protection on the birdfeeder that only houdini could defeat, but he was really something. One day he even taunted me when i came to save the bird house that he was assaulting. These are intelligent animals and he knew well he was not wanted on the feeder . He did not run away he grunted stayed on a nearby tree only a few feet from me as if he was going to jump me and he might have if i had gotten closer. No he was not rabbid. Squrrel do not get rabbies they don't feed on dead animals and do not come in contact with any predator because they're too quick except raptors but birds do not get rabbies either. Houdini is no longer around. Luckily for me a neighbor is feeding the new gen of squirrel so they don't bother the birds at least for now. They have a lot to learn to get anywhere close to Houdini's skills and daring.
Hi, thanks for making this video! It's by far the most informative I've seen. Very helpful :-)I've only recently become interested in birds, but they're so great to have in the garden! We get some beautiful songbirds, and sometimes a woodpecker or two. I'm glad that I've started birding, and that I've done my research on it too. I'm still a kid, so I guess it's good to start something while you're young. Anyways, thank you for your help, I hope you and your local birds are doing well!
Very good and informative video. I have 4 feeders out. One mesh feeder just for sultanas, but with some of the holes made bigger by snipping some wire out. Starlings love these and I get about 20 to 30 coming at one time. Next to that I have a tube feeder for suet pellets. The ones with insects and the ones with fruit. I mice these together in the same feeder, but I usually have to break up the long ones to make sure they drop down ok. Recently I have started feeding dried mealworms, and have been putting these in with the suet pellets. The Starlings go for this feeder also, so I have extended the perches each side to accommodate them by using pieces of wood with the centre drilled out and glueing them on to the perches. Next to that I have a mesh feeder, again with some holes made bigger as with the first one, for suet cubes with insects. I'm finding that this is not getting very much attention. Just the occasional Starling now and then. Next in line I have a tube feeder just for mostly Niger, but some Finch seed mix. I make sure that this one is not close to the others, as the Goldfinch that come about 6 times daily, don't like the commotion when the Starlings and Sparrows descend to feed. Recently, there have been 3 Gray Wagtails attending, which has now gone down to just one. It seems to follow the Goldfinches in when they come. To complete the picture, I have put a large tray, 20" x 16"x 4" deep, as a watering / bathing facility, and change the water and scrub it out regularly. Happy birding everyone.
In the 70s me and my sister as kids would sometimes go to the town's churchyard and feed the sparrows with our spare bread. There were hundreds upon hundreds of them flocked there. Nowadays you'd be lucky to see many there at all. I also love starlings, they're such fun to watch! A few years ago I overdid it a bit and experienced a minor heart "event",and after a fortnight in hospital was ordered by doctors to take complete rest, which I did for a few weeks. As well as getting to watch the entire London 2012 Olympics at leisure,I stayed at my parents' house and often relaxed taking the sun in their back garden, where they even put up a hammock for me,which they'd had stored in the shed. There was a long, very tall hedged running down the length of the garden on one side and a family of starlings was living in it and would bomb in and out at breakneck speed. I could watch them for ages.
During this lock down, NOTHING gives me greater pleasure of going down the allotment filling up the feeders then sitting and watching my visitors, there are dozens of species . The best relaxation therapy I know. Love this video, in love with the voice as well.

Keep it up! +1 sub
We enjoy the birds that frequent our yard. Thanks for sharing.
Great information thanks for that love garden birds
Watching my birds is my favorite pastime.
Pro1er make sure its natural though, just in case
Wow, never thought of peanut butter, will immediately do this, thanks fir the tip xx
Please !please ! Don't give birds peanut butter they die trying open their beaks. Also no rice it swells in their craw and it burst open they die.
@@lorettamoran125 I'm not sure where you got that idea about peanut butter, but birds have tongues which helps get the peanut butter down.

So beautiful. And comprehensive. Thank you.
Squirrels are lil fuzzy buggers.
Great tutorial. I am always looking for new ideas or something bird related that I can improvise. Thank you! God bless you.
Very informative
Thanks
Keep a good cap on plastic tube feeders as we had a bird got into one, got stuck and died

Hello Sue how are you doing today happy new year 🎊 god bless you as you wished….
Superb images of these wonderful birds!
Amazing birds up close, very nice! Thank you. Big Thumbs up! :))
Excellent! Very well presented and very informative!!
What a great video...may be the loveliest one I've ever seen. Thank you for such an effort.
Hello!
This video was really helpful to me.
Thank you
