This fight, according to Benny (World kickboxing champion for many years) in a recent interview, WAS contact...Jackie actually told him to hit hard...he wanted it "real". Benny stated that Jackie hit him so hard that he had to ice his face down after the takes. Also, according to Benny, because of the camera speed issue, they HAD to make contact. Jackie took punishing blows to the body but would give Benny the thumbs up & continue. It was choregraphed by Sammo, Jackie, and Benny but the blows were brutal to both of them...when they all returned from Spain after filming, Benny said he thought to himself that "this guy" would make an incredible fighter...a champion if he ever competed...he had talent, speed, flexibility, power, & most of all...heart. So for any doubters of Chans ability as a marshal artist take it from a world champion who fought with him...he may fool around with comedy & imagination but the man is legit...The interview with Benny the Jet can be found on UA-cam.
Mainly the fact was Benny is a real fighter, at this point in his acting career Benny couldn’t pull movie punches. So they opt real punches to make it look better on screen.
Still neither him nor bruce lee would stand a chance against a fighter like Mike Tyson. Donnie Yen during Ip man 3 said in an interview: "it was really life threatening". Donnie yen's speed is relative to that of bruce lee still this is what he said about Mike Tyson
@Rifaee Rasheedh but in that same interview Mike said Donnie broke his fingers. In a real fight mike even said Donnie would win due to his versatility and speed
In a recent interview, Benny revealed a lot of these hits were real because Jackie wanted the scene to be legit.
I just re-watched Benny's interview on Scott Adkins' channel last night, he talked a lot about the filming of this scene and how they were both really hitting and kicking each other. That's what I like most about Hong Kong or really most Asian fight scenes, they don't hold back or use quick cuts and shaky cam like they do in Hollywood fight scenes to cover the fact they can't choreograph a fight ...I'm looking at you Jason Bourne. Scott hated his fight scene in Bourne Ultimatum because of quick cuts and shaky cam.

Benny has black belts in numerous arts and created his own style and is a pro kickboxer.
Hong Kong movies are filmed without sound recording, every line and sound effect is created in a sound studio. Cynthia Rothrock said she just spoke gibberish on set because everyone else was speaking Chinese and she didn't.
Hate to break it to you but most movies (except low budget b movies) only record audio for sync purposes on set.
Set's are often noisy places and audio recorded is seldom even close to ideal by comparison to an isolated recording booth in a studio.
There's literally an entire job category for it called ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement).
Everything else as you say is provided for separately by the foley department - usually recorded in a purpose built studio - though some sounds like aircraft and cars are very difficult to get right.
(albeit in the modern era a studio likely has a massive archive of sounds to draw upon rather than recording them fresh)
Another one is accurate reverb - for example the shootout with the cops in Heat more than likely recorded real gunshot echoes in a closed off city street rather than getting the gunshot foley on a soundstage, it sounds noticeably different from almost all gunfights I've ever seen in films which adds a lot to the vsiceral impact of the scene.

Some of the punches and kicks were real...benny wanted the fight to have a real effect which work amazingly ..benny had some pads on to take some of the punishment for real also the 2 roundhouse kicks was real to jackie
The flying knee to the chin was deadly I’m assuming he connected him for real with that?🤔 that would knock anyone out cold.
Bennie “the Jet” was a fearsome opponent, power, speed, but most of all an agile mind, he would change his fighting to disrupt his opponents, the smash the shit out of them with lightning fast punch combinations, and a spinning back kick to seal the deal...this scene was inspired by the scene in Return of Dragon between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in the Colosseum...bad ass fight, many hits and kicks were real!!!...🧐🤨😉👍🤘🤠

this was pretty much a real fight , jackie was really punching benny cause he thought he could take it with him being a pro kickboxer , there was no real choreography for most of the fight scene , they were both just flowing with each other , 2 goats right there
Even in its original Cantonese-language incarnation the dialogue was recorded after the film was completed, and it was rarely the same actor doing their own voice in ADR sessions. Hong Kong productions such as _Wheels on Meals_ were not shot in sync-sound at the time.

Benny The Jet is the most badass Kickboxer of all time was a big fan of Bruce. He said when he was a kid, & met Bruce he inspired to be like him, & was one of the youngest Black belts in his generation, he taught Jackie Chan, & there fight was about as real of a fight as you can get. The guy jackie fought was one of the best kickboxing world champions in history. The fight scene was heavily influenced by him. Btw you guys watched the shitty voice over version of this video. The music and dubbing is better in the other one.
I can't stand the camera cut moves they do, where you can tell something was only possible because they cut to another angle where they were positioned differently, such as the kick to the head on one side that lead into a punch from the other side, which was not going to happen without the cut, and then lead into the guy flying the opposite way like a punch could do more than have him flip the other way. Or the leap kick that became a knee bash to the chin, even though he was too far away to actually do that, and then followed with him diving after him to grab him in the window, even though he was too close and not positioned right to have to or be able to do that. They should have just done those parts better rather than use camera tricks to splice together moves that wouldn't go together.
Robin Williams was one of the best at changing styles. RIP ROBIN WILLIAMS THE GOAT!

Actually, Benny rather sucked at fight choreography and kept hitting Jackie for real, and Jackie said if you do it again, you are fired from the film. This was from an interview Jackie gave years ago, so don't believe Benny when he says they wee really intending to hit each other. No one does this, because it could end the film real quick. Add to that, the fight is speeded up. All HK films with Jackie Chan are.
I don't like the re-dubbing, done to Jackie's movies over the years.
IMO, sound effects (and voices) were better with the original overdubs.
Glad I still have most of them on VHS tape :)
