    Speaking of getting hooks and jigs hung up, I'm amazed on how many anglers I fish with don't know how to use the "bow string technique" to get a hook unsnagged. You can do it from a distance and get it unsnagged about 80-90% of the time, REGARDLESS of the type of line you use. It works for mono, braid and fluoro and saves time and cost of re-rigging.

      Bow string technique? I'm not familiar, but am i right to guess that it's 'plucking' the line like a guitar string to vibrate the lure loose?

    My fishing partner cousin did the standard yank lure loose from a low bush, and the treble hook stuck in his chin just below the lip....then when he turned his head, the other treble stuck in his shirt, effectively trapping his head completely turned toward his shoulder like a hooked fish. Funniest thing you ever saw, since thankfully wasn't too serious an injury. :)

    There was an article in bassmaster magazine years ago with pictures of the x-rays.. A little kid had pulled a 16th ounce worm weight with 20' of mono.... When it came loose it penetrated his arm into the bone.... The doctor quoted in the article said it hit with twice the force of a 22 bullet.. And that was with only 20' of line.... The more line the more stretch means the more velocity.... It can be seriously dangerous with heavier weights heavier line and more distance!!! Always pull with your rod tip in the water.... The lure can't hit you that way...

    I’ve had my share of brushes with death but probably the worst fishing close call was when I was about 15. I was snagging carp on a lake when I reefed back I missed the fish and my treble hook flew past my head and hooked a car driving by at 35 miles an hour. The fishing line zipped across my neck cutting the crap out of me until my line finally broke. Those Volvos have some serious pull to them.

    A friend of mine while fishing on Toledo Bend pulled real hard on a hung up plastic bait and the lead sinker penetrated his arm and he ended up at the hospital. The lead weight entered near his elbow and traveled several inches through his forearm muscle before it stopped. So, remember to just cut your line and regroup.

      It happened to me last month. I had a smallmouth on a jerkbait and it came up out of the water and spit it. It shot back and hit me in the face and the hook buried right below my left eye. I was lucky, I didn't have my glasses on. It could have been really bad. Just a trip to the ER and it was out.

    I had a hang up situation, 1/2 oz tungsten, and strictly due to my own stupidity, had a shoot-back direct shot into my right.. ball.. and if it wasn't for baggy shorts, I'd be half the man I used to. I hit the floor of the boat, my body went cold as ice, and I almost immediately was vomiting over the side. I have chills and anxiety just recalling it. Some of us idiots have to learn the hard way. Glad you made it that time!

    You just never know what can happen when fishing. I fish by myself 99% of the time. I caught a pretty nice fish a couple of months ago and as I reached with my right hand to take a square bill out, about the same time the fish flopped as I had it by the lip with my left hand and got the treble hook buried in my right thumb. It took me about 15 minutes of feeling green around the gills and trying to figure out what to do before I finally decided to do what I dreaded, which was to get my needle nose and do a scooping motion to force the barbed end out through a new hole in my thumb and then I cut the barb off and brought the remainder of the hook back out the way it went in. A kidney stone is about the only thing I've had that was more painful. Damn that hurt!

    I just did that 2 weekends ago with a 3/8 oz finesse jig. It was wrapped over a lil tree branch sticking out of the water. By wrapped I mean it had gone one loop completely around a tiny lil branch that should have just snapped off--- so I was snapping my rod back and forth trying to break the branch and that thing comes shooting straight at me at mach 4.8 from only about 15 ft away. It hit the side of my kayak. hit it so hard, and was such a loud crack, I thought for sure I had just cracked the hull of my boat or put a hole through it. I was lucky cuz it did neither, but I learned a valuable lesson. When Im hung up I normally pull off to the side. I guess this time because it wasn't even really snagged and because I thought for sure It would break the tip off this branch, I just didn't realize how dangerous of a situation I was putting myself in.

    Once my buddy forgot the downrigger ball behind the boat. He mashed the throttle and the ball came flying out of the water and hit the center console next to him. Hard. In the head it would be the end for sure. Don't leave the downrigger and don't use the wrong line to attach it. He used weed eater line and it caused the ball to shoot back at us. Scary.

    Several years ago I was fishing with a guy that had a cracked screen on his graph and I asked him what happened? He said a co-angler had a shaky head hung up and pulled it free when it flew into his graph and cracked the screen. Since then I try to remind co-anglers fishing with me to be careful when they pull on a hung lure. I tell them to just let me know and we'll get close so they can pull safely. Thanks for sharing.

    On the subject of the anglers who cheat. You've probably never heard of one of the best scandals as such in 'Trout' fishing. That happened in May of 2020.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 Рік тому +1

      You would not imagine that cheating in trout fly fishing is possible. However, if one listens to Kelly Galloup explain in his fly tying contest from May of 2020. His episode entitled 'Kill the Corona Contest: Winner of the Nymph Category'. It is where Kelly had to explain (sort of like a Tournament Director who was fooled at a weigh-in). Kelly had been completely fooled, and he was very angry. That someone had entered a fly. Which they had really purchased from a maker in Scandinavia. Two trout anglers from Canada, had entered into Kelly's fly tying contest. Claiming it as their own work. If you look at the earlier episode on the selection of the best-made 'streamer' fly. Kelly had earlier sung in praises of this fly. And had chosen it as the winner of it's category. After, he then had to reverse that decision. When the cheating was uncovered. The lure had been sold commercially. It had come from the fly making bench of a commercial maker. Who is the best lure maker in the world. Of that kind of trout lure.

    To be honest, I was very pro technology until I found your channel. The problem is not so much where it is now, even thought I'll admit, it's taken a lot of the "art" out of the sport. You're exactly right, taken 10 minutes to ponder the "slippery slope" we currently trod, God only knows where it's gonna be in 5 years, let alone 2 decades!
    Imagine advanced AI, that uses complex algorithms, that take in data in real time and calculate probability a million times over every second. Now pair this with your reel, that also give you the most likely lure for any given scenario and boat position that control the hook set, retrieval speed, and action for you. Honestly, where's the fun in that?
