- Fishing out of the back of the boat as a co angler requires a different mindset. Here's a few important tips that I've learned while fishing Major League Fishing (MLF) BFL's and Toyota Series bass tournaments.

Dude great video. I love the personality. I want to do a co angler tournament, it would be my first. I am a MLF bass pro tour official. I love what I do. 62 yrs old, recently lost my wife, she always wanted me to be an official, and do a co angler tournament. I have done one, now I want to do the co angler for my wife.. Never done this, I fish out of a Hobie but have always wanted to give it a shot. What is live well etiquette in this, assume you bring your own cull tags to differentiate your five but will you usually have one side of the tank. Thanks for all of the advice, makes this far less intimidating than it otherwise would be. Subscribed.
Thanks for the Sub. It's a fun time. Every boat I've fished out of has a divided livewell so it's not a problem. Probably a good idea to bring cull tags in case your boat breaks down and you have to transport fish via another vessel or if you are lucky enough to catch 6 keepers.
Great tips. If you do a podcast or another video, I would speak to netting fish.
One tip I want to share is to fold up one of those giant, heavy duty trash bags in your tackle bag. If it rains and you don’t have a compartment for your tackle bag, or it’s too big, that bag is a lifesaver. Nothing worse than everything getting drenched and water in your 3700s. Simply place your bag inside that heavy duty bag and your stuff remains dry.

I either wear a motorcycle full face helmet in cold & rain & a save phace in summer & warmer months

Damn. I was typing my rebuttal to the gas debate and then you threw out the point he likely pre-fished and did the scouting. That's a Trump card to my argument.
I was going to say that I would offer an amount up front, regardless of his plan. But if he runs all day and doesn't put me on fish, I shouldn't have to ante-up more money for his failed plan. As a boater, I would gladly accept those terms.
But your point changed my entire perspective. I will definitely give a minimum and ask if he'd like more after we dock. Thanks for the lesson, Sir.

That's good sound advice, and it also applies anytime you're a guest aboard someone's boat and it's not a tournament. You always want to hear a boater say they look forward to fishing with you again.

Something that I'm curious about is when they tell you who your boater is. How do you make contact with them? I'm thinking about starting these next season and am just a little unsure/have those beginner jitters of not knowing where to be and when. Like the video, it was very informative! Thank you!

You got a great approach to this. But I suspect you take this calm, relaxed, enjoy the moment for what it is throughout your everyday life too And that's a good thing we should all do

Best tip I could give to a co angler is to don’t fish any tournaments that spotlighting is allowed! 👍🏻
It makes it difficult.
I always check my boaters stats from the website. If they've fished 36 events and has a career earnings of $332 I usually pack as much tackle and rods as possible ha ha ha!
Lol. I feel ya. Sometimes those are the best guys to fish with. They aren’t vacuum cleaners. A lot of people check stats. Probably should check court records on Case.net too 😁
I always try to watch where they casting and see if he misses something that I can throw at. Always helped me a lot when I was co-angler

Great info. You and I are pretty similar I keep it 6 rods max and I also downsized from a backpack to bag like yours, maybe a little smaller. One suggestion I have is use one of those heavy duty zip up bait bags like the ones from 6th Sense for soft bait packages roll it up and and stuff it in your tackle bag, when you need a soft bait just take out the whole bait bag then if you’re running thru a certain type put that pack in your pocket.

Hey Gabe, really informative video. The smaller details you shared about keeping the boat clean, staying organized etc. are soo important nowadays. I organize my gear totally differently (did a video on this a few weeks ago if anyone is interested) so it's cool to see your approach.
I'm trying to avoid bringing spray-bottle sunscreen to avoid overspray. I like the small face sticks but they aren't really practical for when we transition to shorts/sandals. Any ideas there?
Thanks Alex. Congrats on your success this year. Killin it bro! I put sunscreen on before I leave the house in the morning. I use lotion. I just carry a tube in my bag and reapply as needed. I wash my hands in the lake afterwards and dry/rub my hands on my shorts to get sunscreen off as much as possible.
i always just start off the morning before takeoff giving gas money than, and i tend to go with $50. that way since we dont know each other, the boater can start off the day with a good impression about me and maybe that might make the day go better
