When my wife and I were dating fishing came up. Her dad loved fishing. She loved going fishing. So one day we went to my favorite stream. We went to a nice pool where we could start trying for Smallmouth. She rolled out her blanket. Pulled out a book and started reading. I said "I thought you loved going fishing". She said "I do. You fish and I read. We both have a nice day" . This summer I will be married to her for 30 years.

Great stories. I drew a guy on Lake Dardanell one time that didn't like the way I was driving. This was back in the 80s. He kept wanting me to cut corners getting out of the channel buoys and I was not going to do it on long runs in areas I didn't know real well. He kept saying if you can't out run them you have to out drive them lol. I asked where his boat was and he said it was in the shop getting a new lower unit. I could see why.

Back in the day..B,A,S,S, members could just sign up by mail for a CO ANGLER in a selected tournament of their choice. .. And put up the money ahead of time ,,,,,
then BASS would just randomly pick names from a list..then notify you....all you had to do was be a BASS MEMBER...no skills required... they would return the money by mail to those not picked...

I've only been hardcore serious about bass fishing for about a year now. One of the other Lieutenants I work with fishes the Phoenix and Toyota Series so I started picking his brain when I started buying rods and reels. He knew where I was going with bass fishing and predicted my life a year ago. When I asked about tournament fishing he mentions starting as a Co-Angler. Not trying to toot my own horn but I think I fish harder the most of the boaters I've drawn this season. I literally won't put down a rod to even drink or eat. I never second guess my boater, offer suggestions when asked, I'll carry on a conversation but I am there to fish. Hearing your stories blows me away.

Im a Bass pro tour Official been fishing my whole life. Im 64 and lost my wife 5 yrs ago. She always wanted me to do the BPT official thing, so I did. Then she wanted me to do the co-angler with the Phoenix league well Ive done both for her..now Im hooked I have a 2017 Ranger with livescope. My next thing will be fishing the boater side now!!! I truly do not care about the money,I just want an MLF trophy..How many places do they give out the trophies? Thank you for all your help. Curtis

Kinda reminds me of the co-angler I had back around 20 years ago. This my first tournament with my own boat in a draw/club tournament. As luck would have I drew out by myself, and made me happy NOT to have anyone with me on my first tournament with my new boat. Well the night before the tournament director calls me and asked if this young guy could come fish with me being as I didn't draw a partner. I agreed, no problem. That morning on Lake Sinclair(GA) it was February and it was cold. I had on a full "freezer suit", gloves, boots, etc. to stay warm. This guy shows up wearing a light jacket and little else to stay warm. He had one rod(spinning) and a small tackle box. The worst part was he had been out partying all night and was extremely hungover/sick. We made a short run to my first area which was about a mile away. I look over and he's shivering. I got up on the deck, put the trolling motor down and started fishing. I eventually got up and started casting too but never said anything. Then it got quiet....to quiet. The next thing I heard was the sound of him throwing up over the side of my boat. Dude, you alright? Yeah I'll be fine, I just drank to much last night. After a couple of more body heaves and stomach spewage he asked me to take him back to his car. Fortunately we weren't far away so I obliged. He left and that was the last time we ever saw this kid. Ah memories.... LOL

Had a similar experience as a co-angler a couple weeks ago to your story about the guy laying down. I caught a nice lm on a red crank so my angler starts throwing cranks and parallels the bank super tight. I’ll say this, it’s tough to fish anything out the back when you’re fishing boulders and rock. After a couple of snags you’re forced to break off expensive gear.

Lmao these stories had me laughing pretty good thanks for sharing. I kinda like the back however because its easier to concentrate on fishing in a lot of ways

Randy, I remember one Bassmaster Invitational on Lake Martin. The last day was so cold. I think it got to 25 degrees. My back deck partner didn't say much all day he was so cold. I had a limit but was late to the check in because I got turned around on the lake. Loved my time fishing some of the Invitationals back in the 90s.

In over 30 years of tournament fishing, I have experienced near everyone of these same stories myself. One was fairly recent when I drew a guy who had just started using baitcasters and couldn't cast 25-30 feet from the boat. When he tried to cast further he would backlash everytime. Problem was, he complained I was fishing to far from the bank so he couldn't fish (I was fishing timber in deeper water not on the bank and won the tourney).

The few times I have fished with someone I did not know we have almost always had a good time. One guy in an ABA a few years ago was super competitive with me, and we are fishing against each other in that situation, but still no real issues with the boaters. Sometimes you just get a guy who you do not get along with real well, but that happens all the time in daily life too.

Fished Wisconsin partner tourneys for 20 yrs. One year my wife gifted me with a backseat entry in a November Grand Lake Tourney. First day I drew a dude who's family owned a successful business and his rig & tackle reflected that. He threw a spinner bait all day, kept the back of the boat out of the fish zone, and gladly took gas money at the end of the day. Day two I drew a regular working dude who was in the top 5 after the first day. His fish were gone on day two, so we did poorly. When I offered him gas money he refused it cause he hadn't put me on any fish. I'd fish with him again any day...and buy him a beer at the end.

I had a co-angler who said he was “ready to go” after about 2 hours of fishing. Said that’s how long he usually fishes. Couldn’t comprehend that we would stay out there for 8 hours. Totally blew his mind. He obviously had never fished a tournament before and thought that weighing in was optional and for fun. Needless to say he was real fun to be with around hour number 6.
