OWS but with my friends everyone is trying to go for it the most of the time son the bests spots are always down when it’s my turn and I don’t rly like go for roads
@@catanblunders5113 yeah maybe, there are so many variables that can happen, first concerning factor that. Plays in before all is the dictating the opponents skill set which can always create a bump in the road.
I think it's the best, unless you play in tournaments like the King of Catan Premier League, where it gets hard-focused. Then strategies that seem sub-par tend to do quite well too.
Tried the hybrid OWS strategy today and went 2-0 with it - thanks for the idea and information! First game was a fairly straightforward win with quick upgrades of the starting two settlements to cities, followed by gradual points accumulation primarily through development cards - second game we were pretty wheat starved for the whole game, so it was a much slower build, where my infrastructure was terrible throughout (sat on starting two settlements for ages) but ultimately got the win with a city after a very lengthy game that finished 10-9-9 (for an idea of the length, I had played 8 knight cards by this point). Edit: while I'm an absolute noob to the strategy, I feel like in a vacuum full-OWS is going to be better on some board layouts, and hybrid is going to be better on others (usually it'd be determined by port positions). And of course, switching to another strategy is going to be better if you're playing with other people going for full or hybrid OWS.
Hello, I stumbled on your content a little bit ago and wanted to let you know that I respect the work you put into this video. Keep it up, you have some serious talent. To many people give up right before greatness, so keep pushing, you're doing awesome
I have fallen into OWS + a Sheep port if possible or if not wheat or ore port. You don't have direct access to wood or brick but you only need one of each for a road. You can get this by robbering other players you know probably have either, using year of plenty, knights, or monopoly. Can also trade with the bank easily once you get that port which you should aim to get with your third settlement. 3 cities + largest army + 2 DV cards or longest road if you get road building card. You will often get a lot of knights and thereby keep the robber off you almost the whole game while also choosing to place it on whomever you want.
A strong strategy indeed! I also recommend trying the others on this list, because playing a strategy also helps you better understand its struggles and how to play against it
Ive been playing a port strategy with my focus being wheat and stone so i can have cities early then trade for any card in the game without relying on other players.
Ah, I suppose you often have to deal with a lot of dumb trade offers haha. I don't think that would be good, because trading is one of the ways to mitigate variance and Catan already offers quite a lot of variance
Of course! Keep in mind, it won't be the same every game. Road - Easy part is settlements and roads, so have them as many as possible. A city is tougher, but build a city early on to avoid being stuck in a situation with 5 settlements down. TPP: 1 City, 5 Settlements, LR and 1 VP is the most average 10 points you'll see road win with. But yeah, sometimes a second city is easier or you pull more VPs. Ports - can essentially be anything. It depends on which win-bonus you include. If you go for road, settlement spots will get easier. If you go for Army, Cities are easier. Let's say you focus on Army. TPP: 3 Cities, LA, 1 VP and 1 Settlement. You could also sneak in a double play (Road + Army). Port Strategies are all about reading the game and its opportunities. I actually regret saying it's easy to play in this video.

Why is this video showing a fixed board like on 0:14. Don’t the resource hexagon boards get suffled every game? I don’t understand. Or are they fixed the way you show on tournaments? Thanks
Some tournaments use the default set-up, some mix them up. I use this board to illustrate my point. I often use the same boards, so there's 'new input' to resolve for viewers, so they can focus on one thing at the time.
Agreed, I would like to add you would want to know how to play against all popular strategies and that switching things up every once in a while is quite fun too
You need to know how to play all strategies because there will many games where you will be unable to play your preferred strategy, or are forced to have a bad start.

weakness of this strategy is that you dont always get the right port or good wheat / stone tiles.
