Hilarious, when the professor starts being sarcastic. The writer of this must have had some real experiences with those types of students. (I think I was a little bit of one myself way back.)
Classic American undergraduate….watch current thing on UA-cam called “Campus Reform”….a whole generation who have “taken” a course or two,,probably taught by a 25 year old adjunct and armed with all the confidence THAT brings, approach every news question with an open mouth.
These were the most insufferable philosophy students in my day, but they were definitely a minority then. I am not sure if there is a way to quantify them now, but they are certainly MUCH more salient than I remember.

I wonder if people that are 19-20 find humor in this, or even understand where it's coming from.

I'm 16 and lost it laughing at just the title.
But, I want to study philosophy

That kid needs to return to Beaver Creek, or wherever he was from, and get some " beaver! "
This student would have needed to hear about marxism, but by now he is a lost cause ;)
The only time people who do theory are much smarter than other people is when they're studying theoretical physics...
I think you are confusing being smart with having a talent for abstract thinking.
