    A student decides she needs a decent grade after blowing off the semester. Teachers love this student.
    When it comes to the end of the school year, grading finals and research papers can be miserable enough. The inevitable student that pulls in after a 2 month bender in Slacker City makes a professor like me want to stab myself in the brain.
    Teachers can relate. If you can't, you will soon. Students are better off to just walk in and say, "I blew it. Can we fix this at all." Save the stories. Spare the excuses.

      @@cancelledopinion2158It is super competitive. However, once students are accepted into medical school, they sometimes think that they don’t have to impress anyone anymore, and may slack off as a result.

    My grandmother legitimately died during my second year of college. I didn't use it as an excuse for my failures, but I did spiral into binge drinking for a while. While I think it's lame for people to claim their grandparents or whoever died a hundred times throughout their college career, it's another thing entirely to assume that everyone is lying.

      I can't imagine profs that actually give extra credit. Is that actually a thing in some universities or do some students think they can ask for this? Because every one of these I've seen the students ask for extra credit. I feel like asking for extra credit to go from an B+ to A- at some point just to see what they'd say.

      Speaking as a college teacher, yes we do get this kind of crap from students all the time. What protects us when we refuse to re-open assignments or give extra credit is our syllabus. It is a binding contract.

    I really wish more profs were like that....All jokes aside, personally I think that is part of the problem in society today. Over time there seems to be this constant growth of self entitlement and whether that stems from the parent, or if it is picked up by the kid I am unsure but there really seems to be an increase. Now, educators can't even look irritated without someone freaking out. No clue what there is to be entitled about exactly and not going to waste my time trying to figure it out :)

    Of course it's not his problem...neither is anything of the student's life outside the classroom. Either the student makes the classes scheduled or he doesn't. If he doesn't - he gets to take the class over again. Too bad. Life is rough. Stop hoping your teachers will make it easy. Hint: They already do.

    @purplewowies We all do, but that's why this video was made...
    Students will have these sorts of discussions at the end of the semester instead of working something out. It raises an eyebrow on so many levels because it's still their responsibility to work something out if special circumstances exist; since the teacher is taking care of hundreds of students it's the student's job to make personal contact. If the teacher makes this difficult then we can say the teacher is bad. But not before.

    I found this while writing an e-mail to a prof about blowing off the last two papers we had and asking if it was possible to still get a C. I really just hate the class, but I'm spinning it like I'm busy with work and all that. I thought a D would still count as passing, but apparently not in the stupid core required class. FECK. Your comment was 2 years ago, so you probably won't see my reply... but I'm curious as to why you can't tell a student they are an awful student if it's true?
      I'm sure you can't say that in front of the whole class, because it would be humiliating... but why can't you tell them in private exactly how much they suck (if it's true)?

    • @johnbell5428
      @johnbell5428 7 років тому +4

      I did get an alert to your reply. Number one, even a truly awful student deserves not to be thoroughly crushed. It's better to suggest that this was a bad time to take the class or even to be in college. Number two, facts work better, even on students who won't hear them. Number three, most students who complain are venting.

    • @dmf1301
      @dmf1301 7 років тому +1

      Ok fair point... I understand not literally telling them they are awful in those exact words, I was thinking more like a clear and honest wake-up call... but you're right, it can be phrased more tactfully then 'you're awful' or 'the worst student ever!'
      I watch X factor, and Simon Cowell seems to delight in telling people they are the worst singer he's ever seen... he's usually right, of course, but sometimes I think he could phrase it a bit more tactfully!
      Especially because it's impossible for EVERYONE to be the worst ever!
      He really needs to find a new way to reject people, lol.
      So tact and discretion, gotcha! :)

    A students are usually those who know how to know (KH2K) and apply it
    B students are generally those who KH2K but don't consistently advance it
    C students often don't KH2K, they do great in certain areas but not in other areas
    D students often don't KH2K, get confused and frustrated leading to disinterest
    F students often don't care to know
    Armis is great for C and D students because it provides a process to learn how to KH2K.

The adolescent proceeded to ask me why I don't like him...I am thankful to be free of people like that for now. Surely it will be a similar situation as I continue on at university. Why anyone would pay $239 per credit hour simply to fail, I certainly don't know! Someone has to change our oil and make hamburgers, I certainly won't.

    @mochafudgetruffle I'm a very successful full time student at an accredited university in Alabama. I am on a full academic scholarship, and it is such "black and white" thinking that has allowed me to be successful throughout my academic career. Yes, there are bad teachers out there, but that does not place the responsibility of the student's success on the teacher. I hate seeing teachers get blamed for mediocre work ethic displayed by many students today.
