Very cool to capture this WS III. Anthony Braxton was kind to give us insight into the authentic Woody Shaw. I admire your father even more so to know he was such a kind, humble and intellectually curious man. Woody Shaw is one of my favorite trumpet players. His style and technique are unmatched.
This interview reverberates with magic. I mean if things go very bad on this planet, this interview will be proof that there was once the very height of civilization.
Beautiful, insightful commentary by Anthony Braxton on Woody Shaw to Woody's son. It's rare to hear this type of inside information outside of the jazz magazines, and even in their case, you don't get this much of it. Thank you so much for this video, mosaicrecords.
And I love the images of Woody in Tai Chi forms. That is so beautiful for me. And when Braxton tells us that there are influences still unknown from him, that is wonderful. Makes me feel good. Thank you for all of your posts, Sir.
I saw Woody Shaw at the old Bimhuis in Amsterdam, doing the Tai Chi forms on stage during other people's solo. I think he had Cecil Mcbee and Al Foster, I don't remember the others. Probably 1988 but I'm not sure.
The "tradition of jazz" has nothing to do with wearing a uniform, no matter how "hip" it is. That's the tradition of posing. The truly hip people are those who wear what they want and don't care if other people validate them or not. Surely Braxton has earned the right to be judged on his music and not what he wears.
First heard the great Woody Shaw on a Bobby Hutcherson Live album I bought as a kid. I thought, 'who is that trumpet player?' Completely original sound.
Black Monk 66 why waste your time communicating with someone concerned about superficial subjects that do not have anything whatsoever to do with the musical genius of the man, personally I wouldn't care if a great artist was dressed as a homeless person as long as his and/or her enlightened me to a new consciousness. That's what jazz is all about communication.
One of the biggest fallacies of thought...especially when it comes to hero worship...is to believe that one's superiority, masterful qualities in one department, renders them also superior and masterful in all departments. Not even Anthony is above the tradition of jazz in those regards.
And somewhere along the line assholes started judging other by how they look rather what they do and say and since when does "old college professor" mean a bad thing? I bet some of those old college professor cats are cool
Now this is a much better performance and discussion. You should develop a more acute ear and discretion to music. You would enjoy this much more. instead rubber stamping anything the avant garde does as if you are some type of brainless gnome travellling along an empty highway with a poser like Frisell. Avant fans should drop fascistic attitudes and become more open and less offended to differing ideas. You will really enjoy more and better.
Woody Shaw was a great genius. Transformed the harmonic language of improvising for all time.

flanissimo Right the F on!!!
You are so right. Thank you and Anthony for reminding me.

Anthony Braxton and Woody Shaw, what a wonderful team!

Woody Shaw: GREAT Musician and a GREAT Person. Good to hear it from another genius of music.
Thank you!

What a wonderful insight to one of my musical heros. Thanks for sharing.

from what i understand, Miles Davis loved the way Woody played also.
Great interview !
Ideal!
No doubt about it!
Woody Shaw was fierce. Braxton an unbelievable creator, not to mention an air-tight embouchure.

Black Monk 66
That September 17, 2012 post was spot on. Miles chose to wear Brooks Brothers suit. He was conscious of fashion. And that's okay.
This is Anthony Braxton. Whatever he looks like IS what hip looks like.
What's the track that plays under this?
jitterbug waltz

OrphanSeasun Their thinking about Miles. Who of course was slick as hell.
woody shaw died the same day i was born
Daja Waja How do you know you're not Woody Shaw, reincarnate?
Somewhere along the line...jazz musicians stopped looking hip and started looking like old college professors.
Can't hear the interview for the stupidly loud music!!!

@Tim Watson My question, too. Then I clicked on the guy's channel. There's a lot of golf instruction, with tips on washer repairs.
