A few months late to this video but I clicked fast as soon as I found it! Woody Shaw is one of my foremost trumpet heroes, and it so happens that one of my mentors Rasheed Howard spent a lot of time studying under Woody in the 80’s. He gave me this very exercise that your sharing years ago. There is no doubt in my mind that this exercise is from the master himself. Also, it’s a treat to hear you blow some of Woody’s (and his man Onaje Allen Gumbs) melodies at the end. Long live Woody Shaw, and love and respect to you dB. -Satish
Satish, thank you so much for interacting on the post. We both loved what Woody brought to the table that no one can deny. He was an innovator. Great to see you on the post. dB sends Love and Respect to you.
Yes, Woody is the man! I love his sound (you recognise it anywere) and ideas. I studied here in Holland with Jarmo Hoogendijk who lived with Woody for quite some time and he adapted a lot of his ideas and uses them in his teaching. Thanks for the excercise man!
Onaje is on my CD "TLC" I played bone for years but guitar on the recordings. Hit many genres within our musics on the recordings..my originals but thank the cats!
Thanks for sharing this, dB! I like it, time to hit the shed. You sound beautiful as always. Love Woody, his playing, his compositions, man, so glad I got to see him play a handful of times.
Thank you Jon appreciate the kind words coming from a phenomenal musician as yourself. So glad that you got to see Woody several times. Really awesome!!! 💯 🎺 ❤️ to you from dB and thank you for taking the time to watch.
Nice exercise for a sax or NuRAD, too. I spent a little time working in up and down chromatically, now I’m messing with it outlining chords and other scales. It’s not quite as finger twisty on saxophone.
dB I love your channel, keep the technical exercises coming. I discovered Woody Shaw in the '70s and was cool. Btw: between 3:03 - 3:13 are you trying to hypnotize some Woody in us with your hand? I just thought I'd ask...
Hi Diego great to see you on the channel. I am still a Schilke artist most definitely and I want everybody to know that. I asked Schilke to make me a trumpet that goes down a 4th and also has a quarter tone mechanism on it and they said no. That would be a 5 valve trumpet. Since they are not willing to make that horn for me they allowed me to work with any other instrument manufacturer that can build me that type of trumpet. I will be able play that horn in public and also publicize it. They do not want to get in the way of my artistic vision and I respect that and appreciate that. Right now to build that 5 valve technology I'm working with LOTUS and Stomvi. Sending Love and Respect to you from dB
@@AllThingsBrassAndTechnology Interesting! I have seen 4 valve trumpets with either 4th or 1/4 tone slides but never together. Good luck with the project!. Abrazo
