Yes, thanks to this video I now know another Yiddish word that is exactly the same in my dialect of Swiss German: tsibele (or as I would write it: zibele) :)

Very interesting. The need to study more than just the language reminds me points in Michael Wex's books. This "onion" interview was done in mid 2014. Szeintuch mentions his first Japanese student, Kazuo Ueda, who began studying Yiddish in the early 70's (when he was around 28 years old). In 1989 he published the first Japanese-Yiddish mini-dictionary (1500 words). He then devoted 20 years to compiling the first full Japanese-Yiddish dictionary, 1300 pages, 28,000 entries (selling for $700). A 2012 NPR article stated that Ueda, at 69, had been forced to retire due to Parkinson's. How sad. I think he should be turning 77 this year (2020). Does anyone know how he's doing? What about Professor Szeintuch? I can't find anything recent online about either gentleman.

Very interesting! Does he speak Yiddish or German? I am from Germany and I understand almost every single word. I knew these languages are similar, but I never expected I would understand it so easily. (More easy than Swiss German for example). Now I want to learn Yiddish :)

@@YiddishBookCenter I am so glad I found your video - already bought a Yiddish book (the one from Assimil) and find it totally amazing how similar this is too German. Thank you so much!
