The Farsight Enclaves, known as the "Forbidden Zone" in the T'au Empire, are a series of heavily-fortified T'au colony worlds that are independent and indeed opposed to the rule of the T'au Empire and its Ethereals. They are ruled by the legendary Fire Caste Shas'O Vior'la Shovah Kais Mont'yr, known to the Imperium as Commander Farsight, and lie on the far side of the Damocles Gulf region of the Segmentum Ultima in the Eastern Fringe of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Farsight literally saw khornite demons spawn from the ground in the middle of a battle from rifts of warp that had torn themselves into reality. And he realised that the bloodshed fueled and excited them. So he ordered a general retreat.

Commander farsight is easily one of the best written characters in 40k, mostly because he never has a magical power up moment (except when he gets his sword) and has to learn from his mistakes and gas to out think his opponents. Yes and no. Conceptually an interesting character with a good underlying story, but the writing is absolutely terrible as the author doesn't seem to know how space combat works or how to portray certain units in lore accurate way. Combat is the weak point of effectively every single book of Tau lore written, which is pretty bad considering this is 40k and everything usually is war stories, so there's lot of it.
TLDR: Don't read Tau books, just read summaries and don't take powerwank as gospel. Lot less painful that way.
If you wanna do it, you have been warned.

Oh god I just connected the dots. Farsight is basically Horus for the Tau. He discovered chaos which the leaders of his race (the ethereals) pretend doesn't exist. The discovery leads him to rebel against his leaders, fracturing his empire. He's a war hero and one of the most famed generals of the Tau which has earned him a lot of respect and support. And on top of it there's implications that his blade is chaos corrupted and may secretly be manipulating him. The only difference is rather than wage a full scale civil war with the greater Tau empire, he's excluded himself and is trying to deal with external threats

However, nothing he says can change the new books, either. To this day, he hasn't provided a source or a citation, so even I have to take his words with a grain of salt. Or
      2) They super underestimate them (or just outright hate them) and say that they are the weakest ever and they shouldn't even look in the general direction of any other faction.
Like the tau are genuinely a pretty big power in their part of the galaxy that will probably never be wiped out unless a giant tyranid fleet just steamrolls them or GW just really fucks them over but they also probably won't ascend much higher than where they are unless something really big shakes up that entire part of the empirium.

T'au naming conventions work like praise names and courtly names in the real world. They abandon their birth names when they earn or are accorded a praise name - Shovah is the one Farsight likes most, so he puts that first, and the other ones are other names. In truth, T'au names are probably a lot longer than in canon - they live full lives and it makes sense for them to accrue more than, like, three. Additionally, a Sept is a volume of space, but more specifically it's a colony that is able to send out its own colony ships.

In the book Fire Caste, a member of the Fire Caste primarily operates through spying and deceit, a member of the Water Caste commands all the ground troops, and a member of the Earth Caste manages to put up more of a fight against the Guard with a power tool than his Fire Caste brethren. The Tau on the planet Phaedra have been isolated from the Empire, and it has led to a situation where the caste boundaries are not as strict as the Tau believe they are.

@@volatilesky Interesting, thank you, I'll look into it, I personally don't like the look of the XV8, a bit to boxy for my taste, but the other XV suits look nice. They need to put more verniers on Farsight's crisis suit. He isn't using it for long range gun lines like other Tau so having more directional input for a close range machine would be a massive improvement for his style of combat as opposed to just reinforcing his frontal armor. This would make the Enclaves an even more unique force in the setting by making them even more mecha than normal Tau.
It makes sense that they would favor faster machines and it would greatly improve Farsights melee prowess by giving him 360* thruster control, and assisted momentum from thruster output to swing his sword better, faster and more unpredictably, to get that anime level intensity when he fights.
There's this really badass scene in my head where he dashes through a squad of space marines while turning himself into a whirlwind with his sword. They resist greatly but he narrowly avoids their attacks, cutting the entire squad into ribbons and ending in a dynamic stance, his blade covered in their blood. He turns around to see the havoc he caused and stops to briefly honor his opponent's brave attempt.

Regarding the Tau naming conventions, I believe that Tau citizens are in fact not assigned personal names at birth. Their name is just [caste] + [ rank] + [Sept] until they achieve something that earns them a personal name. So for example, Farsight would just have been "Shas'la Vior'la". The polite way to adress a fellow Tau is to use caste and rank (so "Shas'la" or "Fio'vre" for example), emphasizing that their role in society is appreciated. Only very closefamily and friends use the personal name (if they have one).
