Excellent stuff - My father would very proud of this achievement having been the fitter foreman when it was built at Clyde and witnessed its birth by starting the first fire to bring it to life.
I was very lucky to be invited to ride the 3801 Long Lunch train with my mother in-law out of Sydney in 2000 while my wife was competing as a member of the U.S. Equestrian Team during the Sydney Olympics. What a thrill that was! As a licensed (U.S.) locomotive engineer and steam locomotive fireman I was impressed with 3801 as relatively easy to fire although it would be difficult for me since the engineer and fireman positions are reversed from positions I am familiar with. I am very grateful to the kind and generous Australians and train crew.
I remember years ago when I saw the film ‘A Steam Train Passes’ for the first time, it had an extra introduction before it with veteran driver Jack Sparks talking about “how wonderful it would be to see 3801 running in the year 2000”. And it certainly was wonderful. And now thanks to such hard working people who poured their hearts into the restoration, we have here, 20 years later, 3801 running in the year 2020. What a time to be alive.
Well done to everyone who's involved in her rebuild , I thank you ALL! , I still have vivid memories from back in 1970 of her steaming through Seven Hill ( West bound ) on her maiden run to Perth with 3813 hauling the Western Endeavour , That cemented 3801 in my life from then on & forever plus I have her in N , HO & O scale & hopefully in 3.5" ( 3 1/2" ) scale real soon ( when it gets completed ) & Bevan I Thank You for getting this great footage to share with us all.
I'm glad were not the only country saving some steam locomotives running. 3801 steam locomotive is beautiful. Always loves steamers rather than diesels.
amazing to see the old girl back, i remember steamfest every year as a kid, the race between the tigermoth and 3801, Newcastle to Maitland. Hopefully she comes back one year.
Same here, used to drive down from the Gold Coast every year my birthday shared the same weekend April 20, I still remember Metford station waiting in the cold early morning for the first glimpse of smoke, brings back so many memories. I can't wait to see her in her true colours once more
A beaut clip mate and a huge thanks to all of those hardworking and dedication railway enthusiasts that helped to bring the 'Jolly Green Giant' 3801 back to life
Well done Bevan. Your film clips are fantastic, including the sound you've recorded! It's so wonderful to see this magnificent engine back in Service. Congratulations and thank you, to all who worked so hard over the last 10-12 years to make this a reality. Can't wait to show my Grandkids 3801, up-close & personal. Mike E.
AWESOME!!!! Thanks for recording & uploading Bevan!! Went past Thirlmere yesterday, saw her but had NO idea she was actually running. Then came across your vid - Happy Days!!!
Sounds like 3801. The old film of the night trip through NSW carrying Soldiers, & just people travelling . I love the 44 class . Stood on the footplate at Seymour the day the R Class came off at a new set of points.
Hi from a soon to be independent again UK. 81/4 hours to go. Thanks for sharing these stunning shots of such a fine loco back in steam. Just love that chime whistle and its long blasts which add to the thrill of seeing these old workhorses living again. Interesting to see the single ended diesel in support - hopefully like most of our supporting diesels rarely needed. Keep up the good work guys.
@@cliffordison5004 Congratulations on Brexit, we across the pond have been rooting for you. Expect a rough patch for a while, followed by new prosperity and freedom! I don't know how many times I've watched Bevan's older videos.
Y'know, people call the streamlined 38 class all sorts of rude names, but there is still something quite good looking about those 5 engines, 71 years after 3801 first entered service, and despite my personal preference for the unstreamlined batch (3806 - 3830).
The fact that Europe is able to restore streamlined locomotives and the US can't restore an old locomotive anymore baffles me. My congratulations go out to all of you who restored this beauty.
Me too,i had tears , a job well done .even the whistle sounds in tune ,again and 3801 sound so tight from rail to the chimney , i hope thy realy give it the works on painting 3801 ,and new flags up front.the best locomotive to be made here in Australia ,The Prime Minister should ,do this opening service to make up lost ground ,thanks guys .
@@theextremeanimator4721 Yes, this is nearer to how steam was in the 60s, based on recordings I've heard. 3801's whistle tone is somewhat deeper than it was before its 2007 withdrawal for major overhaul.
The text in the video does say it will be painted after testing. The gre panels look like undercoat/primer. The green panels like the dab and Smokebox front cone are it's finished colour
I never got to see this train as a kid but I hope as a adult to see I got to see the flying scotsman at London so I would love to see our Australia train
The rumour is that it will NOT be used for steam fest, just a static display, but that is just a rumour. Also heard there won't be any trains from central either
OH so the reason i haven't seen anything of it in the last few years was because it was being restored. so this engine and the scotsman are both restored. now if the scottsman could just come back to aus again

Thanks a lot for your videos, Bevan. Can I please ask what video camera you use? The picture quality is very clear. The audio is very clear as well. Are you using an external mic? Perhaps a shotgun mic?
As this is a test run, incase anything were to go wrong it needs something to be able to get clear of the line so the diesel will pull/push the loco to clear the line

Sorry, canadian here and use to Canadian and american steam, but is it usual for the safety valve(s) to open like they were at the start of the vid?

What is the purpose of the diesel loco at the back?
Backup incase anything were to go wrong so it can drag/push the loco to clear the line

Why does this steam locomotive need a diesel electric unit in order to run one carriage?
The diesel is just there in case of failure as this is part of her trials. It may also be providing Head End Power for the coach.
It's good to have the 3801 back but are they even going to repaint the locomotive
Yes, they will do more testing first near thirlmere and then it will be painted, most likely in green
Hopefully a livery to commemorate her service
