    1. First ending is where you join the Illuminati:
"Kill Bob Page and clear the way for the former Illuminati leaders to restore the age-old secret government. Rule the world with compassion and an invisible hand alongside Morgan Everett."
    2. Second ending is where you merge with the Helios A.I.:
"Together with Helios, administrate the world with absolute knowledge and reason."
    3. Third ending is where you side with Tracer Tong and send the world into a new Dark Age:
"Destroying the global communications hub will plunge the world into another Dark Age - dark but perhaps free from global tyranny."

I don't think anyone takes him seriously either, and no one wants to work for him. He's like an illuminati conspirator parody; no one takes him seriously when he tries to manipulate someone, and when he yells at someone they either brush it off or it makes the person he's yelling at angrier. The only people that directly work with him willingly are Walton Simons or, formerly, Morgan Everett, and who knows what they really think.

I felt that way too, and you're right, for the ending, the player was just a tool used to destroy the opposition so that another power crazed organization could take control and restore it's former glory. Everett was always this calm, yet cold and sly character who went so far as to have the former leader and his own mentor/colleague frozen in order to seek out all the secrets and intel before conveniently having him eliminated(he did mention he had zero intentions on reviving his body). It's most likely being a stooge, much like what happened in UNATCO, only this time; you know.

Helios: A technocratic dystopia, in which humanity is eternally ruled by an artificial god of our own making, one who is beyond accountability and has the ability (and motive) to track and control Every facet of people's lives.

*Illuminati ending:* basically, a return to the status quo. The world is still governed by an elite more concerned by its own power than by the needs of those it rules upon. Nothing has been lost or gained, as shown by the fact that this ending mirrors the intro cutscene - a cyborg and his mentor plotting in the Honk Kong HQ.
*Helios ending:* possibly a leap forward for the world. A human supercomputer, if benevolent, might lead mankind to a new golden age, improve preexisting technology and govern with maximum efficiency. But JC loses his humanity in the process and there is still a chance that Helios will act like a tyrant, using abusive surveillance to keep people in check "for their own good", as foreshadowed by Morpheus - probably why this ending feels so dark and uncertain.
*Apocalypse ending:* the possibility of a new start for mankind. We now have a chance to restart a more humane and free society, hence the triumphant music and the hopeful tone of the cutscene. However, most likely, this new dark age will lead to the death of numerous people both during the collapse of technology and the post-apocalyptic era that will ensue, and if new powers emerge from the chaos, chances are they'll be tyrannical and/or plain malicious.

could be, but thats the only logical option - Tong suggests resetting the world - but, not the human mindstet. By that i mean that this entire situation, starting from the gray death and ending on Page merging will repeat, and every time the humans will have to pull the plug. 2052 years of "freedom", ruled by kings in a post apocalyptic landscape, and then what? We pull the plug again? And what if somebody does something worse in the meantime? The technology is advanced enough to copy and paste humans, to have literal plasma fields and to uplink anybody to anything and anyone anywhere. The technology, in some way or another is still there. So in other words, the entirety of Deus Ex will repeat. Hundredts of times. Just in different contexts.

+gbx Tong's ending has some logic to it, by sending things back to the stone age, leadership and civilisation is on a level that is comprehensible to it's citizens, people know who exactly is to be held accountable, in todays government all you ever hear of is scapegoats or people that had nothing to do with what happened getting blamed and punished for it. Tong's ending ensures little to no corruption because a smaller society values it's people and holds its leaders fiercely accountable.

I didn't understand why people who live in the new dark age couldn't read up on a flippin' book. The shutdown of centralized communications doesn't mean there aren't backups of knowledge on people's computers (Batteries and generators anyone?) and god forbid we have to use the dewey decimal system. It's a really tough call to make still though and doesn't shake up the playing field as much as one might like. The rich and powerful will just smell a vaccum - of power - and seek to capitalize upon it, as the sequel pointed out. The major victory earned here is the restoration of privacy to the individual, but it's bittersweet in that it transfers power from government to the coporation - NOT the individual.
A consequence I didn't realize when I chose the Tracer Tong ending. Freedom (privacy) is never free, but without education and free exchange of ideals through global communications, one may never realize the concept of freedom in the first place. Just look at North Korea. They're doing so well without global communication, aren't they? Ah well, at least a video game taught me something for once other than how to paint the wall with brains via headshots.

If the game's future after that ending is anything like real life, we would create multiple decentralized internets much like what we have today, but most likely significantly better, like 6G or something. Tongs ending really isn't even realistic. Imagine the internet, phones and TV goes out tomorrow. We would all be pretty confused but we'd still have power, we'd still have cars, planes etc. It'd fuck up the world for a while but it's not like the people who knew how this stuff all works would suddenly forget how it worked. They would eventually recreate the internet, TV and phones and other communication methods and probably fairly quickly. The infrastructure for all this stuff would still be there. All tong did is essentially destroy the worlds router. All his plan really accomplishes is causing chaos and death in the meantime before some form of communication is reestablished. Remember this is an even more advanced society than our own. They'd figure it out.

The point is its a widely accepted theory that we have about another 5 billion or about double the earths lifespan before solar flares start cooking the planet...so all the poor Chinese people are going to fry :( and other places that dont care about the enviorment.

Cell towers, and lines would still exist and so would local connections. The only thing it would change is stopping one “branch” from controlling the whole world (which is what the 1st ending is). It would be more like how the world is today than what it is in Deus Ex’s timeline.

I chose to side with Tong because in the end, Helios would rely on humans to maintain his power, and people will always seek to overthrow him, in their minds. Just like in 1984, he can plant an idea, but it won't be a true belief.

Chose the third ending which I think is best. Restarting it all didn't bother me one bit and the advantage of it is that this time things can be built right so that there isn't some big monolithic system that can easily be taken over and used for absolute control. With Denton still around, he can keep vigilant over the future and make sure that things are done right this time. I felt like the Helios ending would be too scary because once somebody figures out how to hack Helios/Denton that person will have massive power that can't be stopped.

German Dawidowski That is exactly why I didn't pick the Tong ending in the first game or the Darrow ending in the prequel. Why repeat the same mistakes? Shouldn't we learn from history, rather than starting over and repeating it? I thought progress was about moving forward, not jumping back to square one and then moving back to the square you were at...
      DEUS EX: HR SPOILERS BELOW
On another note, I think they should remake the original Deus Ex and Deus Ex: IW, or make a midquel set after HR where you play as Jensen and try to stop Bob Page, maybe allowing you to stop Megan Reed from developing crap for him to enable a spin-off series set in another reality.

German Dawidowski How do you ever know if things will go right? There is no certainties in life. Starting all over makes more sense because it is known how giving power to a select few leads to inevitable suffering. In the Morgan ending, he talks about how people will forget what caused all of the trouble. In this Tong ending, you have to strive for the opposite and make sure people don't forget. That is how people like Page and Everett gain their power, by making everyone ignorant. You have to stop that.

    • @LDub01031994
      @LDub01031994 10 років тому

John Galt It isn't repeating the same mistakes but restarting to ensure the same mistakes don't form again. Think of the Morgan Everett ending. The guy talks about how people will eventually forget because JC and him will ensure they hid and downplay the issue. That sort of thing is what recauses the trouble. If you let the people forget and not learn it causes the cycle to repeat. I chose to do the Tong ending knowing that wasn't enough. My JC would make sure the actions of Page and the Illumanti would never be forgetten. As well as highlighting the dangers of giving power to the few. Human society has had many situations where it was set back but came out better for it (Great Depression, World War II). Big events like these aren't easily forgotten and can lead to beneficial change. It is progress but somethings you have to go back to make bigger leaps forward (like when trying to make a super long jump for example).

LDub01031994 Let's see... roman empire collapses... looting and pillaging everywhere in the Middle Ages. Great Depression happens... World War II happens... yup, more of the same thing...
Are you saying that if such a similar series of events (Like an economic collapse) were to happen today, that a third time would be the charm, that we would really move forward? Because I think not... We repeat the mistakes we make if we don't learn from them... and enabling the circumstances that lead to those mistakes forming (In other words, collapse leading to pillaging and chaos) is not learning from them...
If we as a species repeat a mistake enough times, we will eventually end up far worse off than we were (Like, extinction-worse... guess what else came about from World War II, and by extension the Great Depression? Fucking nukes... something that should have never existed). We need to evolve. Technologically and naturally, with more responsibility in regards to both (Many times in fact, those two areas tend to overlap). Not just one or the other. Because then we can really move forward. Collapse is the act of moving backwards, with the end result being an ultimately worse existence, or a complete lack of existence thereof...
I also love how you make a false equivalency between an athletic feat and social change... like how some compare apples to oranges, or even oranges to carrots... just because apples and oranges are both fruits, or because oranges and carrots are both orange, does not mean they are the same in essence...
Back on the topic of this game's endings, I agree that I didn't like the Morgan ending either because that just emphasized on what was causing the story's problem (Irresponsibility with power and making it so that more irresponsibility is enabled through ignorance).
But then regarding the Tong ending... how does Denton know that Tong himself won't betray his goals and try to take advantage of the collapse? Or vice versa? It will just create more of the same potential conflict that will become worse as time progresses, potentially leading to the same mistakes being repeated. The ending also completely ignores the root of the problem by just shutting off Helios (And by extension, the internet in Deus Ex); it's like taking a knife out of the hands of a psychopath who murders people and saying, "There, problem solved! Not like he's gonna kill anyone using his bare hands or anything," when the problem is the psychopath using the knife to kill people instead of what the knife was intended for (Chopping vegetables and carving wood, lol)
In my opinion, the best ending in Deus Ex 1 is fusing with the AI, where Denton and Helios both enable knowledge to be spread, with little or no limits... this way, there is little to no ignorance. Even if someone does try to hack Denton, someone with knowledge can prevent or undo that. Like you said, don't want anyone to be ignorant right? Knowledge, and its spreading, is how you prevent ignorance. Remember how much the internet greatly changed things? Nothing like that has ever happened before in history; I consider the invention of the internet to be a polar opposite of the invention of the nuke, because of how much the internet has helped mankind.

naah, for one thing, there is no such thing as centralized internet, and internet's complete shutdown (even though impossible) wouldn't propel us back to middle ages, there is no all-knowing AI, and Illuminati is probably nothing like this game depicted.

Just finished the game a few hours ago. I went with the Helios option.
Tong's idea just seems plain bad. It's a hyper-romanticization of small-scale communal living that turns a blind eye to how easily local warlords (backed by 2050s-era tech) would be able to subject people to their rule. The idea that things would be ideal if we erased N centuries of progress is pervasive and alluring but honestly kind of nuts, and Tong's way of doing is just ridiculous.
Everett's idea is OK in principle; root out the cause of the current problems and return to the old status quo with hopefully more benevolent direction. But with what an unmitigated asshole he is, and how willing he's been to screw over the people around him, I can't find any in-world reason to trust him or believe that JC would have any ability to keep him in check (or not end up in a body bag). Plus he built Morpheus, which tells you a thing or two about his character.
The Helios ending requires a huge leap of faith-that JC will retain his humanity, and/or that if he doesn't, the hybrid inhabiting his body will act with humanity's interests in mind. But, from the choices presented, the other two uphold or regress to a status quo that's lead humanity and the world to the brink of total collapse. So we can reject Helios and hope that going back to that same way of being just won't destroy everything the next time around, or we can take the gamble that Helios will come through. To me, the game theory adds up. All the choices are risks, but two are risks that have been proven to lead to disaster. Only Helios has an alternative that has the potential of ending that cycle, even if it's just a glimmer of hope.

One of the best games i've played. I chose the last ending, blow everything up and rebuild. You can't trust an AI's ulterior motives, nor do you know how much you can influence it with your "flawed" human behaviour. Bringing humanity back to 20's century capitalism with the Illuminate running the threads in the background is not optimal either.

I must admit that seems the most romantic ending, the Tong one, but perhaps the most impractical - the weak link is always human beings and they way they think and I think the Tong ending would have reverted the world into a state of barbarism. It was the ending I favoured tho, but I did wonder how JC would survive as he was a product of the modern age and how would his Augs and stuff survive in a "primitive" society
