  • Greetings Helldivers!
    Today we're going to take a good look at the newest editions to our stratagem support weapon arsenal: the Quasar Cannon!
    An energy-based rocket launcher, the Quasar marries the strength of rockets with the sustainability of laser weapons, resulting in a support weapon that feels almost too good given how many things it can accomplish on its own!
    However, is that really the case? We compare it against our other rocket launchers to find out just how strong the Quasar Cannon really is!

    Notes:
    - Wanted to show off but couldn't get the footage: With the Recoilless Rifle's insane output, you can become a mobile S.A.M installation and absolutely gun down dropships as they come in!
    - Pairing the E.A.T Stratagem with the Quasar Cannon will also give you a similar capability, allowing you to rapidly deal with Heavy enemies or dropships in quick succession. This of course comes at the expense of having less unit destruction (giving up a stratagem that could have been use for cluster bombs for example).

      @Dac85 2 місяці тому +9

      You can run around and do other things while the Quasar cools down and set yourself up to continue to unload, whereas the RR has to park on its butt for 6 seconds unless you can convince someone to drop their backpack to help you (haha good luck in pubs).
      Oh, and the quasar lets you run a backpack for survivability and/or convenience.
      It is not remotely balanced.

      @@Dac85 The big difference is you can choose when you are going to park for 6 secs to reload your RR, you can do it between fights, or safely behind a building. With the Quasar the 3 second wind-up has to be done just before you fire which means you often have to do it in the middle of a firefight where you can get ragdolled.

      @@TheRodentMastermind Except, if you're competent, you can almost always find some cover to charge up and then peek and do your business.
      Like, look at that video with the bile titan. Try fucking reloading a RR for 6s while being chased by that. His quasar, though? Only has to slow down a bit for 3s, never fully stop.
      It's not close: the quasar is busted. Either the RR needs a massive reload speed increase, or the quasar is gonna get nerfed at some point in the future. The tiny downsides it has just do not offset the incredible advantages it has in every other metric. Not even a little. And oh yeah, YOU GET TO KEEP YOUR BACKPACK SLOT.
      Only time the RR shines vs. the quasar is when you have someone feeding you, except if someone is willing to sacrifice their value during a combat encounter just to make your RR worth a shit, you could instead BOTH take quasars and be way better.
      It's wild.

      @@Dac85 TBH it really shines any time you can reload safely. For example if you are giving supporting fire when someone tries to take down a Gunship Factory. You can easily sit on a hill overlooking the site and pick off any Gunship as it spawns without getting ground agro.
      The same if you sit a distance away overlooking an objective, you can just gun down any dropship as it comes in, pair it with something like a Scorcher that has good sniping capabilities and you can really do work while being away from most of the danger.

    2 points,
    1. NEVER hesitate to plink with the quasar, if it kills something yay, if not then it's only a 10 sec re-fire
    2. on static-points summon the SECOND quasar call-in and you can juggle them almost indefinitely the one on the floor cools while you aim the next.

      In my opinion the reload is synonymous with the charge up. So the recolless, for example, you can reload at any time after firing, whereas the quasar you have to reload immediately before firing. Of course you aren't locked in place like the recoilless, but I'd be impressed if you pulled an accurate shot off on the quasar while moving.

      Another annoying thing with the quasar is that i really feel like u need to run a shield gen for it to even be usable. The amount of times where i fully charge my shot only to miss because of some random stray bullet messing up my aim is crazy

    buddy reload recoilless is how me and my buddy killed our first bile titan. it turns you into such a powerhouse.
    he picked up my backpack when i called in the 2nd launcher, but kept his MG (plan was to have him drop it if i needed ammo) and we got forced to the edge of the map when a stray shot aggro'd the titan. killed a charger and was doing a manual reload, staggered it with a face shot and tried to back up but realized we were cornered and he goes "wait! the TV said we can do this!!" and he runs up and grabs my shoulder and we physically shove the titan back with spamming out the 5 shots into its stomach/bodyin his pack until i hit it in the face a 2nd time and it goes down.
    I desperately wish you could perform a buddy reload even if the reloader doesn't have the backpack by letting them use your backpack, even if it's a bit slower. would make it used much more often i feel since most people understandably don't wanna give up their shield/rover to become your ammo butler even if the killing power is unmatched

    The only actual downside to the quasar is the charge.
    The cooldown is absolutely not a downside, because both alternatives are worse in that department. 10 seconds automatic cooldown is better than 70 seconds for 2 shots. And it’s MUCH better than 6 seconds of having to sit completely still. (Which will usually take more than 10 seconds to accomplish anyways)

    • @rykenxiv
      @rykenxiv  2 місяці тому +11

      Its really dependent on the situation! Most of the time not having to reload and wait for a cooldown is not a problem! But if you need something to die NOW not being able to do anything until its back up can make you feel helpless at times! Sitting there watching 6 more dropships come in after you can only take down 1 of them...

    • @DangStank
      @DangStank 2 місяці тому +6

      @@rykenxiv But in the case of the recoilless. If even one enemy comes at you while you’re reloading, you can forget about hitting the ships.
      The quasar is just free value on top of free value. To the point that the OG recoilless has been demoted to hyper situational.
      If you for some reason need 2 shots slightly faster than the quasar, and NO enemies are near you, then yeah, a bit of benefit.

    • @TheRodentMastermind
      @TheRodentMastermind 2 місяці тому

      @@DangStank But the game has given more situations where this is good in the last week or so.
      The times when lots of shots back to back from range where you are mostly safe has trippled, as alongside Bot Drops you now also have taking down Gunships while your team mate sneaks in and calls a Hell Bomb, and taking down Shreiker Nests before you get overrun.

    • @duo1666
      @duo1666 2 місяці тому +1

      This compares everything wrong.
      RR fires more than twice as fast as quasar with solo reload, and even ignoring charge time it is still nearly twice as fast. You are paying an animation time to not have to wait nearly as long to fire again, AND for the benefit of not having to wait an additional timer ontop of that before you can actually fire the weapon. RR also gets significantly better if you can disengage a second to safely reload, or have it loaded before you engage a fight to begin with, as the animation no longer matters.
      EAT has the benefit of being the fastest to fire in quick succession out of any of the 3, and you can easily fire off 4 or more rockets for a before RR gets its second shot in, let alone quasar, if you have the benefit of placing them before you need them. It also kills a titan the fastest out of any of the options as-is, and can kill 3 chargers rapidly with one stratagem callin.
      The charge time AND the 10s CD is most definitely a major issue for the quasar, making it objectively worse than either of the other options against bugs by far, while being better than the other two on average against bots, since bugs require burst heavy damage bare minimum to kill and bots dont need heavy damage for any unit but can benefit from consistent heavy damage about within its 13s window.

    • @duo1666
      @duo1666 2 місяці тому

      @@DangStank Sure, an enemy is coming at you while youre reloading RR, and stops you. You already shot a ship down. You still have 7 extra seconds to deal with that enemy and finish your reload, which is now significantly shorter because of animation breakpoints, before quasar could hypothetically be better. Realistically, if RR cant reload because of pressure to shoot a ship, quasar isnt going to be able to fire anyway or will miss by a mile from flinch.

Gotta get creative to figure that out!)
      With every video I release on Helldivers, the number of variables I can account for grows everytime, and part of the process is figuring out what is going to be useful. Ideally, anyone watching my videos would leave feeling more informed and educated by the topic in question, and in turn that would help them in their decision making or to forming an opinion on their own!

    I tend to run as the anti-armor specialist in the groups I dive with and I'm very impressed how little the various launcher options don't step on eachothers toes.
    You have the Quasar which is convenient but makes tracking significantly harder with the no trigger charge system. The EAT which has unparalleled flexibility in chaotic situations but heavily punishes bad aim. And the RR which has the fastest rate if coordinated and properly defended. And the Spear which will have the easiest aim once AH stops the lockon edging us all the time.
    All have their own style and all do their job decently well. In publics I see a decent mix of them too. It makes me think AH did a good job of making them proper sidegrades instead of one obvious choice.

    Quasar and Jump Pack are a great duo. Another cool synergy is that you can charge the Quasar up while jumping away from enemies, then land, turn, and fire. Between the letting off sprint while you use the Jump Pack and aiming the Quasar, you should already have some stamina gained back to keep kiting.

    Don’t forget the difference between the call-in time between the Quasar and the EAT. The eat might be slower overall given how fast the quasar recharges. But it can also be called in very often.
    This means that if you lose the quasar canon, you can’t fire a “rocket” for, potentially, the next 6 minutes. The EAT is almost always be available in comparison.
    Next up, the EAT pod provides two shots that can be fired in very short succession, unlike the Quasar or the Recoilless.
    Next up, The eat can be stocked up over time, and then used en-masse.
    Lastly, the EAT can be used by anyone available, with the other launchers you’d have to drop it.
    Oh and I guess you can use the call-in-pods to kill chargers with more often😛

    Awesome breakdown! I've been saying it since the QC was added - it's not OP, it's situational. Much like a lot of other things. Strengths and weaknesses all play a part in weapon choice and use in this game, and some people absolutely love to gloss over the weaknesses - or strengths - depending on what the 'popular' opinion is. In this case, some think the QC is overpowered and RR is useless.
    Neither are true by default. How you use them and the kind of team you run with, if you have a team at all, changes how much these strengths and weaknesses play into a drop. Good on you for presenting a fair breakdown of a weapon with more going on than people give it credit for!

    Against bugs another good paring for queasar is the breaker incendiary. Helps with crowd control, and pairs excellently with stun grenades and jetpack. You can just out-kite any swarm of bugs and wear them down with damage over time and queasar potshots. Recommend cluster bomb for faster crowd clear. You can also take hmg emplacement to help when you need to hold your ground. You can step off to stun and decapitate chargers (the biggest problem for hmg emplacement) and then get back to shooting while it cools down. Great with the high ground access too!

    Food for thought: The charge-up time can be effectively mitigated when you actively use the charging cycle to finish target acquisition and aiming, essentially using that time to kill two birds with one stone. For example, I will usually start charging the cannon from the first sign of a dropship arriving, even before I have finished acquiring the target. I also often change stance *during* the Quasar charge-up, popping up out of cover briefly before unleashing the shot and then duck down again; This obviously works best - and frankly, is only really necessary - at ranges under 60m where sudden changes in stance will only move your point-of-aim moderately. Conversely, I will start charging the cannon as I crouch or step down to prone and finish aiming the reticle only a second or so before the shot goes off towards a distant target.
    Honestly, I think the biggest weakness of the Quasar Cannon is how poor the experience of using the proper sights is. The brightness of the reticle can obscure your target in dark environments, plus the weapon eliminates much of your peripheral vision which might have helped mitigate that problem. And that's before you introduce the dazzling display happening at the muzzle end. Firing from 3rd-person will avoid blinding yourself, but then you are of course limited when trying to line it up on very distant, small targets, such as the head of a Hulk Bruiser.

    The Quasar is the bot outpost killer par excellence. While it does seal the same damage as the other launchers, it lacks the safe arming distance the other two have. This lets you borderline point blank it into the manufactory vents for a one shot kill, saving your valuable bombing runs or bombardments. When I tried doing the same thing with the recoilless I noticed it often pings off or doesn’t properly detonate unless you give a healthy distance between yourself and the outpost which can be annoying and finicky especially when you’re being shot at. I like to bring it with the sickle (meta I know) and a supply pack so that I’m almost completely self sufficient and can supply ammo hungry allies with what they need. It’s also great for when you’re stuck going solo too.

    I personally consider the Quasar a strict upgrade over the alternatives. Even with the long cooldown times, the fact it doesn’t take a backpack slot immediately opens up far more possibilities. It doesn’t rely on team play to maximize its output which is perfect for those missions where your teammates abandon you or worse.
    In short, the thing that makes it such a strict upgrade is that its weaknesses and downsides are so easy to cover whereas the competetion requires higher levels of play to pull off.
    I’d take the 3 second charge up time over being completely vulnerable for 6 seconds any day.

It's not just a turret thing, it's also a tank thing. Dunno about the liberator penetrator, might take more than one shot, haven't tested. As long as it's medium armor-penetration, it can deal proper damage to a heatsink

    I've found the best way to mitigate the cooldown time of the Quasar (and why i personally think it still remains a very meta choice), is to bring two or more on a team. If you have 3 on a team with good accuracy you can down a bile titan as soon as it's done crawling out of the ground. You can hammer tanks, forget aiming for the tiny head on a hulk and just blast it (or more often in my experience, shoot in the back since there's so many quasars on the team one of you will have the shot available when shit hits the fan) and generally just stay on top of everything. You take 3 seconds to shoot, then put it back and keep doing your thing with your other weapons.
    The 3 seconds is kinda long, but since you can dive with perfect accuracy, i just dive backwards as i charge it if i need space/cover. Another advantage to it is that the AoE is so small, you can blow a Charger's head while it's in your face and only be knocked down with some bruises.
    Recoilless was my fav, but as long as buddy reloading requires your friend to have the reload back (and subsequently starving if you ammo if they are otherwise engaged), I think the Quasar remains the better option.

No Hunter hopping in and making you flinch or bot shot smacking you making you miss the drop ship. I tend to shoot it in the third person most due to the charge obstructing your sight in first person.

    I love how the launchers don't outmode eachother - they all do the same thing and deliver the same damage, but there are situations where one can rise above the rest.
    In my experience, a Quasar cannot replace a recoilless, but three or four quasars means most heavies will be brought down quickly, and two recoilless means two less backpacks. You can have four quasars and four backpacks. The quasar gets stronger the more of them you have because you will have greater up time on the potential shots. Even if you can't get a shot off someone else can.

    This was generally my thoughts on the Quasar the instant I got hands-on with it - a reusable EAT with a charge time. Given that my previous playstyle involved EAT pollution all over the battlefield and that I was gradually moving towards my current "hit and run" light armor-based playstyle, it naturally caused me to lean more towards the Quasar and the advantage of infinite ammo. And potshots at dropships, spore spewers, and other things are always good fun. I still break out EATs for the more chaotic stuff like Eradicate missions.
    Haven't thought of the Jump Pack as a potential tool for range control (been pretty glued to Shield Generator against bots and relying on my feet to maintain distance), so that's something to try, and the weakspot chart was handy. Good work!

      Hardly matters vs the very real downside of EAT and recoiless on impossible/helldive. Over the course of the run, quasar will get far more uses (heavy kills) than the others and you don't have to worry about missed shots. EAT likely will need to be buffed to drop 3~ each call in to compare, and possibly give recoiless 5~ more shots at least.
      Frankly, helldive has gotten far easier ever since it was released, and for good reason. When 2-3 people on the team have it, then titans can go down basically as they spawn (assuming headshots). Charger spam wont matter with infinite ammo and a 10~ second cooldown. EAT takes time to call in and is hindered by mission modifiers, where as quasar is not. Recoiless just takes too long to reload for its limited ammo count.

    I think all three rocket launchers require different skills to use effectively.
    The Quasar, I've found killing Chargers is a real art, baiting a charge and getting the timing right to nail them in the head. But if there's more than one, it can be a very bad situation.
    The EAT you need to know when to call them in, and be on top of bringing them to the party.
    The Recoiless Rifle is all about managing that reload for maximum firepower. Even though its solo reload is long, it's also a three part process so you can do it in chunks even when under attack. And the Team Reload is awesome.
    I find it really cool how Arrowhead has balanced the three rocket launchers so well.

    Seconds matter on the battlefield so it's always worthwhile to take into account just how long or short an action takes. That said, a lot of the Quasar love and Recoil dislike stems from how a lot of players want to be independently viable and not "held back" by teamwork. Granted, unless you're playing with friends, or at least people you like and communicate well with, relying on randoms is a gamble. So most would rather have that 3 second charge time follow by 10 second cool down cause infinite ammo rather than the 6 seconds for the RR solo and having to scavenge for ammo afterwards.

    I've found myself on a few teams where everyone else wanted to bring and use the Quasar cannon, but IMO having all four members of the team running QC, fun as it is, has the problem of someone not being able to focus on and deal with the smaller but more numerous enemies.
    Once I see that everyone at least one or two other members chose to bring the QC I usually switch to bringing the arc thrower, stalwart, or AMR to focus on the smaller threats. And an EAT for good measure.

    Just my own personal experience, but when using the Quasar, the ballistic Shield can be good as well if your build is centered around it, as if you get some distance, you can begin charging it up facing away from the enemy (So that the shield protects your backside) then turn around at the last second to fire off a shot. Then continue running while your next shot cools down

  • @skadi2911
    @skadi2911 2 місяці тому

    I think you underestimated on of the Quasar's most powerful abilites : reloading is passive. Yes it's long AF, yes you're probably not going to be able to destroy two dropships in a row with it (unless your team runs two of them), but you can move and shoot with your primary while it recharges, instead of being locked in place like with RR or having to focus on stratagem inputs to recall an EAT after spending the one you previously had on your back. With a shield backpack, which you're probably running anyway at high level since it's still very good, even after the nerf, you can tank a few hits while charging, fire, and then deal with smaller ennemies targetting you while you wait for recharge. If you take advantage of this, you can get shots that no other rocket launcher type weapon can give you. The weapon requires a good teamwork and comp to be the most efficient, but imo it outclasses every other rocket launcher if you build around its strengths.

    I admire the usefulness of the quasar cannon. However, I am someone who likes to handle immediate threats quickly as I'm always on the move or has that thought process of "you need to destroy the problem." For bugs, it's a godsend handsdown. Quasar is good against bots where there are a consistent number of medium armor units that get 1 tapped or very nearly 1 tapped with primary finish, but not so many that the CD becomes a major issue and you cant kill enough of them fast enough.
    For bugs, literally anything else is better. There are very few medium armor units that require medium armor penetration as most have easily accessible light armor, and when heavy armor units spawn, there are multiple or require 2 shots minimum, which the quasar sucks at. Meanwhile, EAT kills 3 chargers in a few seconds (pod 2EAT) and recoilless is recoilless.

    it's way better for bugs imo, since guard rover kills most of the annoying chaff so you can focus on chargers (which it 1 shots) or bile titans. vs automatons getting a good firing position or flank often makes a big difference in how hard combat is, not to mention terrain as cover being way more important than for bugs because of all the rockets/laser fire that can kill from long range. yes a stun grenade certainly helps with a hulk getting too close. however with other weapons you wouldn't need to waste as many grenades because they fire faster and so could take impacts instead (which i find more useful in general). the infinite ammo thing sounds neat in theory too, but i've basically never run out of ammo for recoilless and anti-tanks come back off cooldown very quickly anyway.

    Not mentioning the personal shield as a synergy for the quasar feels silly, it basically prevents you from being interrupted/flinching while you peak out to fire quasars "missile".
    Combine it all with an ultra-light explosive-resistance armor and the sheer speed/mobility will make you uncatchable while raining infinite missiles onto whatever you want, protected by the snug shield.
