    As a producer of extra virgin olive oil in the heart of Southern Italy, I can't stress enough the importance of this message. Too often, consumers are swayed by the lowest price, not realizing that with olive oil, you often get what you pay for.
    Quality is key when it comes to olive oil, as it's directly tied to the oil's health benefits. Our family has been nurturing our ancient olive trees for generations to ensure the olive oil we produce is of the highest caliber. We understand that the best olive oil comes from a meticulous cultivation and extraction process, and it's this level of dedication and care that gives extra virgin olive oil its health-boosting properties.
    I completely agree with Joanne Lacina's advice to educate oneself on what to look for when buying olive oil. It's not just about choosing a bottle off a shelf. It's about knowing the source, understanding the process, and appreciating the dedication that goes into creating truly high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Remember, it's not just a cooking ingredient; it's a key component of a healthy lifestyle. Thank you, Joanne, for shedding light on this often overlooked aspect of choosing olive oil.

    EVOO (cold-pressed) is what we want.
    6 Tips for Recognizing Real EVOO
    How do we know if our oil is the real thing and not part of the olive oil fraud?
    1. Do not buy light olive oil or a blend; it isn’t virgin quality.
    2. When EVOO costs less than $10 a liter it may not be authentic oil.
    3. Real oils are sold in dark bottles, as this protects the oil from oxidation. Look for that.
    4. Look for a seal from the International Olive Oil Council (IOC)
    5. Look for a harvesting date on the label.
    6. It can get old and rancid. A simple test for a good oil is to taste a little on a spoon. Not rancid, the real oil will have a fruity taste in the front of your mouth and a peppery taste in the back of your mouth. Then you know it is not a fake olive oil.

    We got these olive trees that grow WILD in people's pastures and fields, they get loaded with small olives and I have never heard of anyone useing them. Most people don't know what them lite color bushy trees are , I have always wondered if you can get good oil from them- old school way 🤔🗺🤗 This is in North Central Kansas, hill country HERE and olive trees can be spotted all over once you recognize them🎢

    Excellent video!!! Congratulations @OliveOilLovers But, you MUST also do the "fridge test". I do it all the time with EVOO olive oils. And I'm often surprised: the oils that were great by taste, they were the worst in the “fridge test”. That's because "the mafia" tricks and fine-tune's the taste and colour very well and easily (just like with alcohol). Then the worst and highly harmful sunflower, soybean, seed oils in general, highly processed Frankenstein oils...that cos $2 a litre, become EVOO that cost 20$ a litre. That's much better profit than from cocaine and arms and (so far) relatively RISK FREE. They (the bad guys) CAN manipulate the taste and the color, but they CANNOT manipulate nature.
    Saturated fats (butter, lard, beef tallow, etc.) are HARD at room temperature. That's good, because they are saturated (STABLE) - saturated means that all the carbon atoms ( C ) in the fat chain are bonded to hydrogen (H) atoms...thus no room for oxygen (O) atoms to attach to Carbon (and to oxidise). Olive oil (extra virgin) is MONO UN-SATURATED fat. That means, all the Carbon atoms links are busy (attached) to Hydrogen atoms EXCEPT 1 link...that's where an Oxygen atom can attach. That's why Olive Oil (EVOO) is LIQUID at room temperature (and prone to oxidation by light, air, time). Because of that one (1) Oxygen link in the chain. BUT PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE IN A SMALL CONTAINER for 12h to 24h at 2-4 degrees centigrade and it will become solid and look like BUTTER. That's a real EVOO, first press. All the other olive oils (second press, hot extracted, refined, etc....their fat chain has been broken and they will not solidify for days in the fridge). Now we got to the 3rd class of fat: POLY UNSATURATED FAT (all the Frankenstein seed oils). Their carbon atoms have just a few hydrogen atoms attached and all the rest os oxygen atoms (POLY). Highly unstable, extremely harmful. THEY NEVER SOLIDIFY at FRIDGE TEMPERATURE, but they also do NOT SOLIDIFY for days in the FREEZER at -18 degrees centigrade.
    I have tested EVOO’s in the fridge that become butter-like within 8-10hrs. Others take 24hrs, some take 48hrs. The first kind (8-10h) is PURE EVOO; the second (~24h) is EVOO mixed with some REFINED olive oils or worse: SEED oils; the 3rd one (~48h to 72h) is like 50/50. But I have had some VERY EXPENSIVE EVOO’s, with all the proper labelling, stamps, certifications, taste, looks…you name it…THAT THEY NEVER SOLIDIFY EVEN IN THE FREEZER: those are super-fake olive oils with 100% Frankenstein seed oils.
    TEST TIP: Buy from the pharmacy a bunch of cheap, plastic, sterile containers for pee/urine (the ones used for LAB tests). Pour a small amount of EVOO in each one (like 10ml-20ml depending on the size and shape of the container). Label them. Better do this before bed, because for 8-12hrs no one will open the fridge and alter the temperature. Set the temperature at 2 degrees Celsius. Check consistency in the morning. The BEST EVOO’s should be solid in the morning. The second best should be solid the next day, and the só-só ones should be solid at 72hrs in the fridge. The absolute fake ones, you can transfer to the FREEZER and you will see that they will be in a semi-solid (semi is a keyword here) state for days at -18 degrees celsius. Maybe even plain liquid.
    Good luck and success. Poke me if you post a video on that.
    Regards,

    KODILU

    Olive oil benefits:
    1/I have used extra virgin olive oil to remove it every day, I just use sunscreen and lipstick. It's light and nourishes my skin.
    How to use it:
    wash my hand clearly and dry my hand, use extra virgin oil to massage my face for 1~2 minutes. After that, I use a wet warm towel to clear my skin. Finally, I use a foam cleanser to wash my face.
    2/I have to use extra virgin oil to clear my head when it's dirty or has dandruff. It's really effective. I use it 30 minutes before washing my hair.

    Hi from Spain!, were you can enjoy the best olive oil brunches in the world 😉.
    The correct labeled is "VIRGEN (virgin) EXTRA", and of course, bottled in dark cristal, usually dark brown or green; clear cristal bottles allow high light oxidation of this delicious treasure for our health.
    Just for you that clicked to read more...a couple simple spanish secrets 😜:
    1.- Dip some bread in this thick green juice, add a pinch of salt, and right into your mouth, close your eyes and allow the salty oil to touch your palate before chewing it, and...take off.
    2.- Slice a tomato in two, hold one part in your hand, add some salt, a spurt of this oil, and fill your mouth with a giant bite, as if there is no tomorrow. When finished...idem with the other half.
    3.- Don't forget coming back to Earth

      Glad you enjoyed the video. Not all olive oils will have a harvest date listed separately on their packaging. The "best by" date is typically about 18-24 months after bottling, so always look for an oil with a best by date more than a year away. At oliveoillovers.com we do list the harvest date for every olive oil we sell, with most new harvest oils arriving around the start of the Spring.

    Hello Joanne I have two questions. 1. Is polyunsaturated fat the same as polyphenol? 2. Is monounsaturated fat more important than polyunsaturated fat or vice versa? Thank you, Curtis.

    • @Oliveoillovers
      @Oliveoillovers  Рік тому +3

      Hi there. Polyunsaturated fat has no relationship or correlation to polyphenols. Polyphenols are plant-based nutrients with antioxidant capabilities. The fat makeup of olive oil is primarily oleic (usually around ~80%) and linoleic fatty acids (typically up to ~20%). Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fat while linoleic is polyunsaturated. Both are necessary to the body. Which is more important to your body is a question better answered by medical professionals.

    What is your opinion of Trader Joe’s extra virgin olive oil

  • @BlueMasteress2012
    @BlueMasteress2012 4 роки тому +5

    Thanks for the info. I do have one question: I have been told to use extra virgin olive oil for things like salad dressing, dipping, sprinkling a.s.o, and use just plain Olive Oil in cooking. From what I understand this has to do with the extra virgin oil losing flavour when heated. So it doesn't change the oil in a bad way, but that it is a waste of money to cook (at medium to high heat) with an expensive oil, when plain (olive oil) will give the same result. Is this correct?

    • @Oliveoillovers
      @Oliveoillovers  4 роки тому +9

      We recommend extra virgin for all applications, including cooking. Regular olive oil, by definition, has been chemically treated to remove flavor defects, while extra virgin olive oil is literally the only unsaturated fat cooking oil that undergoes zero chemical processing. One of the main reasons we see suggested for using olive oil vs. EVOO is to avoid having a flavorful oil used in cooking. Cooking with extra virgin might cause the oil to lose a bit of flavor, but it's actually quite stable up to about 400F, and higher quality oils withstand the heat even better. And a study released in Spain last year concluded that cooking vegetables in EVOO makes the phenols of the cooked veg more available than cooking in other oils. Olive Oil Lovers carries a number of different price point EVOOs, so you can cook with good stuff and not break the bank. Then you can save the super high quality, high-polyphenol EVOOs for your dressing and dipping and get the best of both worlds!

      We recommend buying olive oil online because that way you know the oil has not been exposed to light or heat until you open your package at home. If you prefer to shop in stores, you want the freshest olive oil available. Look for a harvest date within the last year, or a 'best by' date more than a year away. Look for olive oils from a single variety or a single region - and avoid blends of oils from different countries!

      NO, you shouldn't. It's not good quality olive oil. An excellent quality EVOO will ALWAYS be packaged in either a brown or green glass bottle. A reputable company would never risk their name and good reputation by using clear plastic or glass to bottle their EVOO. When exposed to light it oxidizes and becomes rancid much quicker. No OO producer wants their hard work and high quality OO to go to waste! So, they will make sure that it's preserved. The good stuff is going to cost you more. It's an investment in your health. Try California Olive Ranch for a good quality local made in USA EVOO. For top notch oils from Greece, Spain, Tuscany, Portugal, and a few other distinct OO producing countries on the map. Make sure they have a PDO seal on the bottle. (Protected Designation of Origin) Those seals are only given to the highest quality olive oils by the European government. Do your research and find yourself some great OO. It doesn't have to be expensive. Costco carries PDO olive oils once a year. So, stock up when you see it! I hope this had been helpful. 😊
      Note: OO = Olive Oil
      EVOO = Extra Virgin Olive Oil

      We're US based so not sure what they sell in Tesco. First make sure the label says "extra virgin" and aim to buy a product that is not in clear packaging. Look on the label for the oil's origins - ideally you want an oil from single region, not multiple countries. Finally look for a date - ideally a harvest date within the last 12-18 months, or a "best before" date that is in the future! The freshest EVOO is usually your best choice.

      Morrocan olive oil has the most extracts of polyphenols, which is hard to get from other foods or olive oils.
      Polyphenols are known to be very important for health benefits for the heart, brain (such as alzheimers), and rheumatoid arthritis disease and also diabetes.
