    I lived with a fisherman for many years. He HATED 'catch and release', because like you, he saw many fish die and read the statistics on catch and release fish deaths. He read it's about 1 in 5 that die outright! When the river that runs by our home went to catch and release only to build back the dwindling trout population, he stopped fishing, because he only fished for food. I have never understood the allure of catch and release, and your video makes a lot of sense to me. Thank you!

    I live in NL, and this has been a long standing argument with our Salmon. I agree fully with your point, and have had fishers bragging about catching 70-100 fish a season with catch and release as if they are preserving the stocks. Very wasteful with such a limited resource.

    I agree with 100% on this issue. If you're not gonna eatem then leave them alone.i catch what I need for a meal then I'm done fishing

      Also I know people who catch a bunch that end up going bad in the freezer because they never eat them and that's bad to.

    Makes sense. I do both. If I can get some good pan fish to eat that’s fine. 😊

  • @theressomelovelyfilthdownh4329

    It's a valid point. The river behind the allotments is full of large heron. They will snap up a dazed fish, no bother. Hell, they are doing well on the perfectly healthy fish.

    Hum, this video has me rethinking my fishing. We live on a nice pond with a stream running in to and out of it to a much larger stream. Quite often on a nice day I would fish from the bank then release not thinking about what I was actually doing. After listening to your presentation unless it is for food I do not have a desire to fish for fun. From this pond of all the fish I caught I never ate any.

      Wow I didn't think I'd change anyone's mind - that wasn't really the point of the video - rather it was simply to voice a point of view that makes perfect sense to me, but is rarely ever heard (.i.e catch & release is not as kind-hearted as people think). Anyway man very big of you to admit that - and hey you still get the watch them rise right :)

    Took my kids maceral fishing last year . Wanted about a dozen to cook and eat . Had to throw back 5 or 6 dozen to get a dozen in the size limit. Would have been happy to just eat the smaller ones. Maceral have a delicate jaw - I'm certain most of the ones we were forced to throw back did not survive... Not a good strategy for conservation. Had similar experience striped bass fishing as you described . Idiots that have never been outdoors make the decisions on how to protect and conserve things they have no knowledge of ...
    Have a great day ! 😎👍

      I have the same concern about that rule. So many of them get thrown back and just end up feeding the seagulls! I agree - the policy-makers seem to lack the practical knowledge. I think a poundage rule would be better - eg - you can only take home 5lbs or 10 lbs of mackerel. No one's gonna hang around catching more once they have enough for a feed - it's not a sportfish

      Its your duty to ignore stupid BS regulations. If i catch it i eat it regardless what "regulations " say.

    I agree with you and at the very least, catch and release should be with barbless hooks. However, if every person who likes to fish went out and caught a 'feed' for supper like you had the opportunity to do, the wild stocks would be gone in a heartbeat. There is so much environmental damage to the rivers and streams that catching and killing wild fish for even one meal, by every fisher in Nova Scotia , just isn't sustainable.

    • @outdoorsonthecheap
      @outdoorsonthecheap  Рік тому

      But as I explained - the catch and release approach is no more sustainable because it kills fish also, and in some cases these people kill more fish, since anywhere from 10% to 20% of C&R fish die from injury, regardless of how carefully they are released.

      I gaurantee you, more fish die from being released than die from someone catching and eating for dinner. These catch and release clowns sometimes catch hundreds in a weekend.

    Catch and release is like being invited to dinner, and then - after the food is set before you - getting up and going home.
    If there is a hobby that is more insane, none currently come to mind. Well, maybe bungee jumping? And untying the bungee on the way down?

    I agree, however sometimes I catch fish I didnt target. If they are perfectly edible I will take them anyways with some exeptions: 1-Too small: No point eating it, I might at least give it a chance to survive.2- Too big(probably the most questionable): I dont have a family to feed, so sometimes if a fish isn't particullaly good eating (meaning I cant give away leftovers) I will put it back so it has a chance. 3-Illegal: I will not put that evil into my life - rules are rules, even if I did not make them.
    In those cases catch and realease has a purpose. Also, technically it is illegal where I live, but the sword of justice is very blunt in that case.

    • @outdoorsonthecheap
      @outdoorsonthecheap  Рік тому +1

      Well yes of course - that's different because, like you say - there's a point to it.

    Don't have experience freshwater fishing. But I would have thought it is more ecological if people ate smaller fish than larger fish. For example, eating sardines and sprats versus tuna. Also healthier, because smaller fish have consumed less pollutants which tend to accumulate in the larger fish.
    The issue is also related to "bycatch" -- about 40% of the animals caught by the fishing industry is "released" back. It is very bad for marine ecosystems. It would be far better if people ate what was caught instead of being picky. That way they would have to catch less, and cause less disturbance to the natural ecosystems.

    I'm starting to think that way.
    I always caught fish to eat until I discovered Fly Fishing. Catch and release was just assumed to be the ethical choice for the fly fisherman. Keeping fish was frowned upon.
    I'm questioning that now. Of course, the fish you release that die feed other fish. But still. I don't like to shoot a duck or a grouse and breast it out and toss the rest in the bushes. I pluck and cook the bird. I feel that it is disrespecting the bird not to. But--on the other hand, the foxes appreciate the carcasses. Still doesnt seem right.

    I'm a bass angler...no trout around here. It can take me the better part of a day to float from my launch point to our landing point. My wife and I might catch 50 bass during that time. We release 99% of them. I use barbless hooks. I fish for the fun of catching fish. I like to eat fish but I have three freezers full of food at home. If people like me ate all the bass we catch we would wipe out the population in no time.
    Yes some released fish die. I'm sorry but it won't go to waste. I, for one, completely reject your version of ethics.

    • @outdoorsonthecheap

      The argument was that I don't see the one practice as being any more ethical than the other when all things are considered. You reject that?

      @@outdoorsonthecheap Sort of. It depends on the fishery and the amount fishing pressure.

    Fishing for sport just so you can brag about the fish you caught, is unethical and stewpid. I think the same of these big ego "hunters" who only want antlers but take the meat only because it is law.
