One small detail i think this gets wrong from the canon is that no matter what time you defeat the Black Omen in, you are thrown forward to the Day of Lavos for the actual battle with Lavos. So he would still be sleeping under the earth in 1020 AD even if Crono and crew climbed the Black Omen in 1000 AD
Aside from that minor nitpick, this is a great series!

This is what I never understood about the Guardian vs Porre war in Chrono Cross and the cutscenes from the PS1/DS/Mobile ports of Chrono Trigger. Porre is basically a hamlet. It's like, five or so buildings at the edge of a desert (or forest depending on the timeline). It's a small town. What leaders are going to listen to Dalton, much less have the manpowder to get the kind of gunpowder this lunatic outside of time is demanding form them? I just don't get how a giant cassle full of trained and armored soldiers is going down to an army of FIVE FUCKING BUILDINGS WORTH OF PEOPLE.
Shit just doesn't make sense to me. Also, I'd argue the gun thing since you don't see that in the CT cutscenes (or at all in CC iirc), but fan theory, so I'll let it slide.

Great effort on your presentation. Unfortunately I can't say I agree with most of this. We'll have a bit of great fanfiction at the end of this but it would be something like Crimsons Ehcoes/Flames of Eternity/The Prophet's Gale and not something that can be seriously thought as a "sequel", meaning no offense, in fact, admiration you could reach something to those names. However you have the same linear type of logic that is indeed the failure of Chrono Compedium. Taking time-travel plot points and thin strokes very seriously.
The Chrono series has never been about the minutea of time travel, but rather on how it is a mechanic that can better lead us to what makes JRPGs great: the scale, the characters, the world, the themes... In all of this you made the mistake of having no broad strokes whatsoever. By attempting an assumptive "real world logic" you end up with comedy relief character as your main villain, no new characters, no new names, places, and an endless remix of what came before. Hence I don't think you understood what Kato meant... "Leaving the Past behind", you are meshing with the past endlessly. The reason I say this could never be considered for a "sequel" is because it doesn't cover the beggining inventiveness a sequel (especially to this series) would have to start with. Cross looks nothing like Trigger, plays nothing like it, most of its characters and places are different, and the themes directly contradict/subvert those of Trigger as well.
Everything you do in Cross has been determined before, everything you do in Trigger is of your own accord uncaring of the consequences that would be risen about. Determinism vs Free Will. Cross also had themes of humanity versus nature, not only as a capsule of its time, but also how it very slyly and inventively allows it to revisit diferent endings of Trigger to give it new meaning, not necessarily in the a+b=c type of thiking, but how it adds to the broader theme. After all, change prevails in this series. Making a "true sequel", as blindly demanded by fans, is an impossibility due to the necessary nitpicking of endings that according to the themes of Trigger should all be equally canon. Cross solved this with the idea of a "Time Crash", where different timelines could converge, therefore, compete. Not to mention the impossibility of the Dream Team gathering together, and any further game that tries to hit the same beats of Trigger would inevitably fail for they no longer hold that lightning in that bottle neither could they compete with fan expectations after all these years.
To make something different would trully take priority. Focus in broader themes that allow NEW names, mechanics, art styles to come into the Chrono World. It's funny that Chrono Compedium makes such a fuss that 4 people cannot enter the time-gate and make a whole set of reasonings for it (it obviously being a gameplay-story reason for you not to get to the End of Time just yet, with no additional complexities), yet they also favor to not spotlight that fact that in the entirety of Cross elements are not learned natively as magic was in Trigger (well, they mention it, but once again, not thematically). This is, much like the scenery, plot, and music, another example of Chross subtely interweeving the "Are Humans not part of the World's Nature" theme. Having now to use seperate items to harvest the magic power of Lavos. Meaning that defeating Lavos in Trigger did really affect humans biology to the point they can no longer use magic themselves but it has to be contained. Later we learn this is an instrumentation of Chronopolis. That there is a hint of a "Paradise Lost" when it comes to cutting ties with Lavos. That perhaps humanity better off go on living through Lavos rather than being seperate from their "progenitor". Thus why Schalla says the opposite, that you can learn the ancestral sequences of the world to prove you are one with it and not the cosmic reaper of the Reptites (the true supposedely natural dominant race of the world should Lavos, a being from outside, not interfere with its homeostasis) or mere harvesters of nature for their sole will, that like other creatures they can belong. Lavos says the opposite, that humanity's nature is to be in perpetual discord with the nature of world, and as such to be conquerors like itself. Respectfully, Kid is Schalla's Avatar and the Frozen Falme's is Lavos'. So in Cross we have 2 major endings thematically. In one you prove Lavos right and in the other you prove Schalla right. So, to me, before any plot-points are even made yet, we should affirm these 2 coexisitng, like Cross did with Trigger.

    • @BinaryDood

      Focus on the names:
Trigger: something you PULL, a beginning action. It started it wont stop. This is a game about free-will, how you change things.
Cross: a path to lead things from one point to another. Fit's the game's theme of competing timelines, one where you are alive and another one you are dead. The opposing nature of things, yet the necessity to make a bridge between them. CC is determinism, as we see through playing the game, but at the end you successfully build the bridge between it and the inherent free-will of humanity... That is...
Break: to break free, shatter walls that seperate, waymaking, shattering. What is achieved in the ending of Chrono Cross, as all the entities trying to manage destiny have got their answers. The world is "free to be determined". The abstraction of humanity to believe they can shape the future themselves yet also the realization that there are always higher forces at play, and that messing with said futures always makes others not exist.
So taking into account those two thematic endings from Cross we can derive much from these themes. Since Schalla is freed' in the ending of Cross, where "free-will" can finally exist, it makes sense for she to be the protagonist of Break, IMHO. It is thought that Serge's life and his timeline were Lavos and Schalla's testing grounds for their dilemma. Once solved, it ceases to be, it resets like we see in the end of the game. However, those events all lie in Schalla's memory. However, in the other ending you Prove Lavos right. So what if the humanity of that ending, having been reset as well, but on Lavos' side of the argument, believes that they themselves should be more like it. A messianic figure the Frozen Flame becomes, and, as opposed to an Awakening, there is a need of a Merging. This is the main thing I got from the "Chrono Break Trailer": at the end the group fights something that looks like Lavos' Core AKA the fusing of all lifeforms. This could be denoted as a percieved superiority by the humans from the reborn timeline of Lavos' side. Cults form to literally trying to be Lavos. After all, the Chrono series may change a lot, but at the core of it, the biggest constant is always Lavos. And as we see in the trailer, that appearance could be taken by any human with a strong enought will to go throught the motions of the merging. To implement Lavos' DNA into your own rather than the opposite perhaps.
Going back into the major themes, this could be implemented into gameplay like this: Unlike both Trigger and Cross, but following from their steps, we could finally maybe visualize the possible timelines we could create from our actions. Perhaps through a mapped graph, Schalla has, after all, lived in a place beyond time altogether, so she could have a broad-scope on how to visualize many timelines at once (like Nu's, the ones who knew the LIFE melody you had to play to awaken her, before any other being). A "Radiant Historia", for the lack of better reference, way to interact with the timelines, like I said in the previous video. However, as timelines would be created, avoided, some would rise the Merging with Lavos. Where humans by their own accord decide it is better to be one with Lavos. This is far more devious than an all-or-nothing awakening, and it showcases the temporal dominance of Lavos more than simply taking over a single timeline. Making its very "Idea" to be the parasite that infects worlds in many timelines, so that people who live in those want to BE like IT. In those timelines, you have to BREAK. And I think that would be the best way to bring the major theme and name into play. To Break the timelines were the necessity for Lavos rules. And perhaps the whole game could have this whole argument residing, going on with your journey. The many different vistas and characters coming from how different the future could be. Yet, perhaps the subjectiveness of being coming into play, that Schalla's vision is just as tyranic as Lavos for Breaking all those timelines to prevent them from getting to the, known so far as, "Bad Ending".
It is just an idea, but I need no plot to justify it. Plot exists only to lead point A to point B. Broader themes dictate the creativity and quality of the artwork far more than the thinner strokes of which plot (especially in loose timetraveling scenarios) allows. This not to say that loose ends should not be tied. I would be happy with cameos/justifications of older characters and even some mcguffins. But let that be the point where you start to make the ball rolling? That is a recipe for a work to be shallow and homogenous.
That is why I don't think you can ever specifically figure out what "Chrono Break" could be like. It would likely be something that would have its own vocabulary and visuals and anything in between, and that is something fans can never create themselves as they will always resort back to that which is already known. But we can however, speculate THEMATICALLY. And considering just how thematically rich Trigger and Cross are, I always end up being disappointed when people favor generic time-travel complexity over what trully makes these games great. Coeherent time-travel plots are nearly non-existent, and that wouldn't be playing to the strenght of the Chrono series. "Primer" is probably the only non-literary work of fiction I saw that actually managed to grab the potential mechanics of a time-travel plot by the horns. The Chrono Series is nothing like Primer.
Still interested to see your take on it. But like I said, it will be very good fan-fiction in total. Not something people should expect a possible Chrono game in the future to "be like".

@@BinaryDood I think there is way too much complexity here, both in the proposed scenario and in your reaction to it. In all of this talk about themes and time-travel mechanics, you both are missing the most important aspect of Chrono, and that is CHARACTER. Time-traveling plots are by their very nature convoluted, and if you try too hard to make everything make sense, the story is going to fall flat and make everyone zone out. Ironically, this was one of the principal failings of Chrono Cross; too much focus on plot and theme, and not enough on the characterizations that make Trigger such a memorable experience. We all fell in love with the Trigger cast. We know very little about the Cross cast aside from some very broad strokes. It is implied that Serge and Kid form a powerful bond, but we see little evidence of this in how the characters are presented most of the time. This was a huge missed opportunity. Contrast this to the scene of Crono and Marle reuniting on Death Peak. While the temporal mechanics that enable Crono's resurrection are kind of cool, the most important part is Marle's obvious love for him.
Plot, as a general rule, should always come second to character. The Back to the Future films are a perfect example of this. The first and third films concentrated strongly on the relationship between Marty and Doc Brown. The second film focused more on the unintended consequences of time-travel. The second film is regarded by most people as the worst of the trilogy by far, flying cars in 2015 notwithstanding.
Back on the subject of Chrono, too many people are trying to imagine a third game while not really understanding what a third STORY should be. Who are the characters of the story? Why should we care about them? How does this story relate to what came before? Do we make a new set of characters and try to recreate lightning in a bottle, or do we use characters that are already established and craft the story around them? What plot points were left unresolved in previous stories, and how will the characters react to the situation? We also have the more practical problem of there not being a new Chrono game in 22 years. Trying to make a sequel in that environment, even with a beloved IP, is not going to go over well, especially given the many narrative issues with Chrono Cross. It would be an absolute mess. The solution to my mind, given the temporal and dimension-hopping nature of the franchise, is to make a remake of Trigger that is also a sequel to Cross. The timeline has been reset as a direct result of how Chrono Cross ended, and Chrono Trigger begins anew while taking into account the changes made to the timeline due to Schala/Kid's actions. We get to see the characters we all know and love, we get to see the most iconic locations Crono and Co. visit, and most importantly, our expectations will be slightly subverted due to the subtle changes that have been made to what transpired before. Since Chrono Cross was established as a very tragic story, the audience is set up for the possibility that things might end differently this time. By going back to the past, you are actually moving things forward while at the same time greatly increasing the scale and detail of Crono's world due to better hardware. Kato's assertion that you must move on from the past is a mistake in this particular situation. It is important to know where to end, but it is no less important to know where to begin. The Chrono Trigger remake can be Chrono Break at the same time. Resetting time, even with minor changes incorporated, is inherently dangerous. You could create an endless time-loop that would have to be somehow realized and then broken in order to ensure the continuation of history (hence the name Chrono Break). How would the Trigger crew respond to such a revelation? What really happened to them in the original timeline before Chrono Cross? Would they change it? Could they? Should they?
We have no need for a completely new cast of characters in a third game. We already have everything we need. Just expand on the characters and world and have fun with the possibilities. You can even incorporate popular fan ideas into the new narrative of Trigger to score big points with the fan base. (Like Lucca x Magus, Cedric Guardia, Antaeus Porre, and a manipulative and morally grey Belthazar, to name but a few things.) Establish how the heroes deal with the time loop and then end the story with the successful resolution of what was "triggered" by Cross. You could then remake Cross using the same production values as the Trigger remake (while fixing the myriad narrative issues of the original) and thus close the circle. That is the point where you take Kato's advice of moving on from the past to heart. The story of Chrono is then complete and everyone is happy.
(In case it's not obvious, I am working on the very thing I have just described, albeit in a novelized format. Hopefully it will be the foundation of something grand. There is a real hunger for something to be done with this franchise, as long as it is done right and with full respect to the source material.)
