It’s all about the lineage for me Chris, Original Brave 1. Our son just completed MEPS and has taken the oath to become a US Marine as soon as he graduates. This proud dad loves your channel. Stay Safe !

Thanks for another great video!! BR Bravos are a fav here too. My trail & woods Bravo is their 1.25 and in-town is a Gunny. The 1.25 does every thing well without scaring the wife & grandkids with something Rambo, and the Gunny's handy light/compact size is comfy for more domestic chores.

Thanks for the video, I didn't know about the CPM154 Bravo 1. Sheath looks great to(love my Tope recon Knife and Sheath)
Over the years I've sold off all my Bravo 1s to friends(3v's and S35VN), I'm more of a 1.25 LT and 1.5 Bravo guy, I'd buy a 1.25 Bravo LT in CMP154!!!!!!!
I like the Bravo1 handle, and the LT blades, I'm not a Marine looking to over turn a tank, so LT for me, lol.
For field dressing game, I thought the Bravo 1 was to thick, I use Kalahari Thorn CPM154(Love for edc too) and Gunny in 3v currently(Both so excellent!!)
    EXT 2, looks interesting.

The LT design is oriented toward the woodsman/bushcraft folks that put an emphasis on carving and making feather sticks . . . the thinner blade just makes thinner slices/feathers. If the bulk of a blades use will be batoning and other "hard use/survival" work then the thicker, more robust standard blade thickness is better. Personally, I prefer the standard/original Bravo 1 blade thickness as I have other blades that serve the bushcraft role and sometimes there's no substitute for a thick, beefy blade to get stuff done. BTW, I think the new sheath is a huge improvement!

I have a Bravo LT (3V). I've ordered an Aurora (Cru-wear). They're wonderful knives but, IMO, they're TOO BIG (even the LT). I also have a nice, simple, Benchmade Puukko 200 (3V), and that's the PERFECT size for all sorts of reasonable bushcraft EXCEPT batoning. But...for $20 I got a nice, light, razor sharp, extremely hardy and robust FIskars X7 Hatchet from Amazon!! That hatchet is better and more useful for splitting wood or chopping tasks than any knife. The small Puukko and hi-tech but cheap hatchet make for a much better setup than a huge, unwieldy knife, IMO.

    I have many Bravo's in A2 and 3v , Bravo 1's , 1.25's and 1.5's.
All are the .217 original thickness and I like them like that. Considered the thinner ones, but I am happy with the performance of the .217's. I usually have the Garberg with me also for more precise work if required , but the Bravo handles pretty much everything I do nicely.
I like the fact that there's pretty much zero flex in the blade , and it splits wood like a champ and still does feathersticks and whatever. A2 is easier to resharpen than 3v , but the edge stability is a little less. 1.25 in A2 is my most used actually.

Never thought i'd hear BKRT and Gerber spoke of in the same breath, if your bushcrafting with all those BRKTs surely you could spend some money for a decent folder/small fixed blade from spyderco, benchmade, lionsteel, esee, kabar, etc as a secondary blade to better compliment your Bark river collection... though i'll admit every time i consider purchasing a nice new folder, i end up with a new fixed blade instead haha which lead me to this video after debating a benchmade bugout or benchmade 940-2, I ended up purchasing a Bark River 1.25 A2 haha.

I have a Bravo LT in Cru-Wear, Bravo 1 in M4 and Bravo 2 in 3v. The LT is the most slicer-ific of the 3. I use it the most but the .25 thick M4 is a woodcarver’s wet dream! The Bravo 2 is lonely.

Hey great video, I went and bought the ONTARIO MARINE RAIDER BOWIE because of your past review about the bowie and took it in the backyard for some heavy chopping and chipped the blade from the tip to about an inch down the blade !!! They are using a 1080 carbon steel now instead of 1095 carbon steel.I don't know if it is the steel or a bad grind? What do you guys think?

  • @schlooonginator1227
    @schlooonginator1227 5 років тому +2

IMO the ONLY advantage of thicker stock is preventing breakage and perhaps improved batoning while the disadvantages are slicing , cutting and carving. At that length, I think thinner stock makes much more sense.

Can you do a video about specifically "saw back survival knives" ? Though no longer in vogue people have different tastes. I think the most elegant of all survival knives might be the "Carl Schlieper Survival Companion." for instance, if it had been full tang instead of the old gimmick of having a hollow handle for me it would be near perfect, especially because it allowed you to grip the first part of the blade for fine detailed work. I have the original version of the Dartmoor Knife, which was ruined in an updated version because people thought it had a true saw back on it, but it was for making bone tools etc. We cannot make a proper choice if we want one without seeing what is still available.

Hey Chris, another good vid. I currently have 3 Bravo 1's - 3v with ramp, 3v field(jimped), and the new CPM154 Rampless. I have grown to prefer the rampless over ramped. I do like having the thicker blade as I consider 4" and larger blades as a "primary" able to do it all knife. I use one of my Gunny blades, same thickness as LT Bravo 1 just slightly smaller.

Hey Chris nice review. I prefer the Bravo 1 LT 3V. Actually your review pushed me over the edge to try a super steel. Don’t really need the extra thickness of the original Bravo 1 but I can see it’s value. Just like the balance of the LT. Have been mostly an A2 or O1 steel guy but the 3V is pretty nice. Twothings for ya. 1. How does 154 compare to 3V? And for the Scout straps I bought a 2.5” D-Ring to go underneath both the belt straps and used the longer of the two scout straps to make a dangler. You could also use two straps for the dangler if you had a belt loop in the way on your trousers. I’m considering drilling out the snaps for Chicago screws. Never been a fan of snaps.

  • @Jimlovescock

  • @rickkerans8485

I think I would like the thicker one eventhough I know cruwear and lt Wright will not break just feel more secure with the thicker one. Plus thicker one will hold up longer over repeated sharpening not that either will need it enough to make a difference in my lifetime.

I like a stout tip, so I just got a Bravo 1. My only concerns were there is no fero rod loop on the new sheath (but it is a great sheath anyway) and the jimping (no ramp) was SHARP. I have the same type as yours. I used a Dremel tool and got the jimping smoothed out, and a plastic tube and ranger bands made a great fero rod holder. I made it mine, and I love it.

Speak of the devil! I have one with the oil drying on the sheath as I watched this. CPM 154 is one of my favorite steels, which is why I got another one. I don't think the thickness vs the LT makes that much difference, but don't have that much time on both to have a legitimate judgement. The LT is lighter though, and for fair weather trips to the woods may be a little friendlier to carry. I would take the heavier, thicker blade in colder weather where a fire might be necessary, not just something nice to have. Both work just fine in my limited work with them as a common belt knife in the woods. There are better hunting knives and better choppers, But the basic Bravo-1 family is hard to beat.

Chris, is there a difference between 154-CM and CPM-154?

The Bravo1, A2 steel, chips very easily. IMO it’s garbage. Sure, it’s sharp but so what, it’s not worth the money. (Maybe) other steels work well with it but their A2 steel sucks.

Okeedoke. So whatever did or didn't actually happen with you're knife, automatically means all "their A2" is garbage. Gotcha.

@@preparedmind101 Yeah, it does. For the price they are asking for, anyone should expect the knife to outperform any $30 knife. Their knife falling apart after a few swings is not acceptable. I had them replace it, even though they denied a poor heat treat. My replacement failed exactly as the original did. Garbage steel may be an understatement.

@@downsouth701 CPM 154 is the perfect stainless steel, for these kinf of knives. It's way tougher than most stainless steels, relatevely easy to sharpen compared with other, takes a very fine edge and it's carbides cut like a scalpel. Generaly, it's one of the best, if not the best super stainless steels, for a medium size fixed blade. Ask users, or even better, use it before you judge.
