EZ Bar Walking Rotations for Functional Deep Core Strength

  • This weird-looking exercise is fantastic functional training for running, jumping and throwing.
It works to strengthen the rotational/anti-rotational deep core muscles...the obliques and transverse abdominis.
These muscles are responsible for force transfer from the legs through to the upper body. If they're not strong, you're not strong.
They also work to stabilize the spine (anti-rotation) to prevent injury to the spine, especially during powerful rotational movements (like sprinting, throwing and jumping) that put torque on the midsection.
You can use a straight bar for this, but I find the EZ bar works best as it's shorter and easier to control. A 7 foot long Olympic bar is a bit of a challenge, especially in a tight space and if there are other people around, they may not know to look for a bar swinging at them.
The EZ bar being shorter allows you to walk at a faster pace which I find beneficial.
When using a longer bar, you have to go slower (and use a lighter weight), because the bar takes longer to come around and because the longer "arm" of the bar is going to generate more rotational force as it swings around.
Be sure to maintain a vertical spine position and use those deep core muscle to prevent twisting in your spine. The shoulders will rotate a bit but the hips should stay fairly square.
If at any point you find your deep core muscles are fatiguing and can't fully control the rotational torque, stop the set. Do NOT go to failure on this one as that means your deep core isn't properly stabilizing your spine.
Start lighter than what I've got going here (I've done a lot of deep core work), but you can work up to some decent weight.
