      Growing up in Iowa, Montana has always been a dream for me. I’m trying to plan an elk hunt with my old man up there. Beautiful place.

    There's so many non residents crawling all over each other here every year due to social media! The forests are wayyyy over crowded and horribly over hunted! Its not like it was before social media became prevalent! Sorry guys!

      I’m out in wolf creek we’re still good out this way. I see wild life almost daily, and this is way too fat out in the sticks for any tourists to come. I enjoy my hunts, hikes, and fishing usually without seeing anyone else lol.

    Wish Colorado would adopt the 10% Non-Res cap...we are currently at 35% and it's ridiculous!! Our season lengths also suck.

    I hunted as a Montana resident for many years. I think.the best elk hunting is in the Missouri Breaks portion of the state.

    Thanks for posting this, Randy. Great point on the landscape benefits of MT archery season. Never thought of that before, but it seems obvious. I think it was a few years back when you posted some similar content on applying for Wyoming. The knowledge shared has resulted in an almost yearly pronghorn or mule deer trip for me and my dad. Thanks for that. Been considering SE Montana whitetail for quite a long time, hopefully the herd is on the rebound after this year.

    I know you cover it in the state videos but you should make a video about how to get into the sheep game and how to apply across the lower 48 as well as what places are worth applying

    Randy, you must be getting a commission from the Montana FWP for selling tags. Thanks a bunch for inviting a bunch of outa staters here to our already overrun state.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  3 роки тому +5

      Nope, no commissions. Non-resident tags are capped by law. But, it is a Montana sport to blame non-residents for most anything and everything.

    Can you explain the youth program? Up to what age is considered youth and is it correct that youth don't have to draw a gen tag? This can be purchased online? Appreciate all you do for us fellow hunters!

    Mr newberg do the same rules apply for the pronghorn general rifle draw as for the elk general rifle draw? As in being able to hunt most of the state as a non resident with a general rifle pronghorn tag? Or are the a different set of circumstances regarding pronghorn general rifle drawings for non residents?

    Hey Randy, I'm a new Montana resident this year and was wondering if you could explain how getting OTC tags for spring bear, general elk, general deer, and antelope works. I'm sure its simple but I'm coming from a draw only state. Much appreciated

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  4 роки тому +1

      There are no OTC antelope tags. For bear, elk, and deer, just go to a sporting goods store with proof of residency and buy the tags.

    Hey Randy. Great overview - thank you. You mention that until the past two years, the general tags were almost guaranteed, and you would not have recommended buying a preference point. In looking at GoHunt, it seems a bit more bleak - 55% odds with no point, and 77% with one point. So even with the point, it’s a 3 in 4 chance - no where near guaranteed. My son and I were both lucky enough to draw (and fill) deer tags last year. We’ve put in for the Big Game combo this year, and did the preference point. Fingers crossed! If we draw, we’ll be hunting the northern end of 317 again this year just south of I-90. How prevalent are grizzlies that far north?

    • @drewlehtola3726
      @drewlehtola3726 4 роки тому

      Greg Henderson I haven’t ever hunted in that area before, but I have spent some time over there. I would say to be prepared for grizzlies as it is fairly close to Yellowstone, but I don’t think they are nearly as prevalent as in some of the other districts. Good Luck!

    • @gshenderson1
      @gshenderson1 4 роки тому

      Thanks Drew. I own two pieces of land up there - each bordering a different 640 acre section of public land just a few miles south of I-90. One is right on the Gallatin/Park County line and the other is a bit closer to Livingston and has a cabin on it. I live in UT, but love spending time up there! I’ve got trail cams up there and see black bears and cougars frequently, but no grizzlies so far. Hope it stays that way!
