Elk butts don't stand out in the snow... I'm looking for videos to help me get familiar with elk habits, preferences, etc., when they move, where they go in various weather conditions, stuff like that. Anything you recommend? My season goes to Jan 31, still time to figure this out.

Thanks for the advice man! I just moved to Oregon and the rifle season for Western Cascades opens and I am beyond conflicted for whether or not I should buy a tag. I feel like it would be a bad idea to go alone and on my very first Elk hunt. That said...if I go against rational judgment, do you have any advice on what to look for when looking at areas via the internet? I have 2 spots picked out but I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for. Any additional insight would be greatly appreciated!

Don't believe anything this green horn said in the fucked up video and sure don't believe any of it when it comes to Oregon Elk .
The greatest problem hinting in Oregon is the state and lumber company's have or are posting forest land to No Trespassing then put up road gates.
How allot of this happened it was commie democrat Ron Wyden allowed the sale of state public forest to UK land - lumber barons that now have post the forest lands Keep Out !

@@haydenkonstantinopoulos7111 I haven't a clue where you are hunting or Hunting Rocky mountain Elk - Tule Elk - Roosevelt Elk all will have much different hunting so this is why this video is a farce .
I will say Elk aren't any slouch to kill, they can take serious bullet hits then covers miles before they die to lay down and recover.
Even with bullet holes in the lungs or hits on parts of the heart they still can get a long ways before you find them .
Because Elk are so tough this is why the 300 win mag or larger is used allot on Elk .
My Father used for years the 7 mm Rem mag but most always the Elk took at least 3 bullet strikes to the vitals to stay down .
One morning as light was coming my father and me stumbled on a Bull Elk bedded in the old unused logging Road, it stood up at 50 yards then my father let loose with a 300 Win mag 165 gr Nosler partition and we could see the bullet hole at the lung area as it turned to run, we fallowed that elk up canyon walls over a ridge into a valley then never found it .
Other Elk hit by the 7 mm Rem mag we had to get family out the next day to cover the canyon to find the Elk .
We Most always found the Elk but it showed just how hard core tough these Elk are .
This is the kind of mid blowing tough these Elk can have .

Thanks for getting back. I will be rifle hunting- 30-06. Also, since Unit 9 is only about a six hour drive from my house I’m planning on getting some scouting in..... I may head up for my first look in the next couple of weeks. I know it’s early but I want to get familiar with the roads and lay of the land. Hopefully I can get up there at least three times before my hunt. Thanks

@@trumptorianguard4617 That's a pretty late hunt, so the weather may be a bit unpredictable, depending on what elevation you're at. Since you're going to be well after the rut, the herd should be back to something closer to their normal patterns (ie. the bulls shouldn't be bossing the cows around - they should be in regular herd behavior). I think your best bet is to try to scout and pattern them as best you can. Be prepared to spend a good amount of time being patient and glassing for animals. Since it's a rifle hunt, you should be able to take a longish shot at them without too much issue. Good luck!

Jeff Rice thanks for getting back. Since my last post I got out and did some scouting in July, 5500 to about 7000 elevation. Saw just over 40 elk total in one day, about 50/50 cow to bull ratio. Some singles, smaller groups and then two groups about a dozen each. All seen while familiarizing myself with the roads and locations of tanks. Every tank had a dozen game cams set up on it. I’m hoping those are guides and guys wanting big bulls and they’ll all be gone when I show up for the late antlerless hunt. I’m headed back soon to locate a good place for RV camping during the hunt. I know the weather can really vary during the beginning of December. We’ll have a 4x4 truck but I’ll probably bring a side by side for game recovery??? Maybe?

I’ve been hunting elk for about 10 years and I didn’t really get a lot out of your video but keep at it. I’d talk a little more about their eating, bedding, and migration patterns. I guess most hunters know about working the wind but I’d include more on that too. Also best times of day to hunt them on certain locations on a mountain/at certain elevations as it relates to their bedding and eating. Maybe some better tips on tracking, what to do/where to go when you can’t find any good sign on public land, things like that.
Just some ideas for some unsolicited constructive criticism. Take it as you’d like.
Here’s to a good hunt everybody!

I want to go elk hunting sooooo badddd. But I live in Illinois, and there are no elk that I can hunt. There are 12 or so a 40 minute drive from me but they are in a large forested enclosure and I’m not allowed to shoot them. I could go to Montana but it’s like 1000 dollars to even hunt the elk for non residents. I’m just going to move west. Establish residency in an elk rich state and live like I want too. Illinois is a joke and going to the shitter anyhow.

I have been reading the comments and it's crazy that anyone would believe this BS.
Not all Elk or land they live in is the same so they aren't all hunted the same to hunt the same .
I am 62 years then have been a professional hunting guide since 1976 with my work in the Pacific NW to Alaska .
I have hunted with the family since childhood and Elk hunting was never missed.
I have guided Elk - Black tail deer - Mule deer - Black bear - Grizzly - Brown bear - Yukon moose hunts .
If readers think. I should put together a hands on in the forest class on Elk hunting then lets do it .
You can not get anything of value from some fool who admits he has only hunted Elk a few times.
Elk are a Ghost in the forest which you can look for ever then see nothing when you have so little experience in hunting.
I can conduct in forest hunt class from Portland Oregon.
