    Great video about OTC tags for elk. Some really good information. I would also mention that Idaho's OTC tags go on sale in December for the next year. As mentioned by Joe, they sell out fast so you need to have yourself a reminder to get them in December the year BEFORE you want to hunt elk. Thanks for the great video.

    Some great advice for inexperienced elk hunters. I live in Idaho and have elk hunted for 35 years in MT, WY, WA, and Idaho and have taken a few friends from out of state on elk hunts. Fitness as you mentioned is key. The NR hunter should consider other tags too when they show up, deer, bear, mountain lion or wolf. I was blessed with a big mountain lion this year during my elk hunt for example. Terrain type is something you didn't mention too much in Idaho as is varies greatly north to south. Best of luck on your future hunts

    Colorado has changed some of their OTC archery laws, specifically in southwest Colorado. Units that once allowed OTC archery, now require you to participate in the draw for a tag for those units. These units DO NOT allow OTC archery anymore: 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 77, 78, 711, 741, 751, and 771. Be sure to check out potential changes to the hunting laws for the specific area before heading out!

    I am really surprised that you didn't have Montana on your list, especially considering you can archery hunt from the first part of September until mid-October and then there's a week break and then it goes into rifle season, so basically you have almost three months of hunting, and you do not have to pick a season like you do in Colorado you can do both archery and rifle! 👍👍👍👍

    Just to correct some info on the Idaho tags. There is an A or B tag option but the times he gave are not correct. There is some slight variation between zones. But for the most part with the A tag you get to hunt archery for the entire month of September and then depending on what zone your tag is for you might have an opportunity in October and November for any weapon spike or cow hunts. With the B tag you get the Rifle Bull hunt in October or November but you do not get to hunt the beginning of archery season as well. Also he did not mention that you have to choose which zone you are going to hunt. Each zone generally is comprised of 3-4 units.

    I grew up and lived out in Wyoming and Washington and have hunted almost all of the western states(it was great having an active duty ID! ). Here's MY 2cents; Save your money and go every xx years with a good guide. Seriously...most OTC units are that for a reason. The reason is they are pretty average at best. Add to that a LOT of hunters and you're chances of getting an elk are low, your chances of getting frustrated is high. Save up and hire a guide every 5 years or whatever you can afford. Your chances go WAY up and frustration level goes WAY down....not to mention the expense of driving/staying there every year.

      I honestly feel like it’s how far you’re willing to go and honestly a whole lot of luck involved been hunting what is to most people in Wyoming terrible zones with only one point required to draw in the Big Horn Mountains region and my party has killed some awesome bucks every year but also had taken a lot of small bucks but for only having to have one point to draw it still definitely worth it.

    The private timber here in oregon for the most part require a permit which they sell once a year. Weyerhaeuser owns a ton of land where Roosevelt's are roam. If you are caught without a permit to be on private timber they will pursue criminal charges. Know before you go. Also Roosevelt's go much farther east than just I5. I would say cascade mountains west are all Roosevelt. That opens a ton more national forest to hunters.

    • @cjberan
      @cjberan 2 роки тому +1

      If you can get it done on OTC land it should be that much easier on a draw unit. OTC is the ultimate hunting challenge if you think about it as everything is stacked against you. One of the reasons we like it to be honest:) I have hunted Colorado OTC archery 2 times and have a bull to show for it. Went to a draw tag area muzzleloader with one point 3 times. Have 1 bull elk and a mule deer to show for those hunts. My group has always come back with elk with 20-50% of tags filled. We go hard and somehow get it done every year even with the many mistakes we make.

But like I said of course I’m just joking lol . 😂 but I know the feeling hunting in Wyoming almost every year some years we go and put miles and miles on the boots in the bighorn mountains for 10 days and never see a shooter but it’s still worth it just being out there sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don’t.

      I moved to klamath falls after hunting Colorado 5 years and enjoyed hunting alone the last 2, harvesting my first bull solo in september in good weather. But looking at those steep and densely vegetated coastal mountains and I see a huge challenge. Limited sightlines to locate elk that move less and the pack out would be brutal. And that rain.

    Just to put it out there. Timber companies have greatly reduced the amount of hunting done on their lands. Pretty much everything is pay a lease or no hunting. There are a few who do allow you to hunt on there properties for free such as Starker or RFP but pretty much all roads are posted with no motorized vehicles. So to say you don't have to be in shape to hunt west oregon is a joke. Good luck packin a bull out the bottom of a canyon through blackberries, frens, and regrowth.
