It worked great for me. Thank you. But what I noticed is that. Both CHIRP, CHIRP NEXT and this Chinese programming software will not allow me to install 1.25 meter frequencies. I get an error message stating that the 1.25 meter frequencies are out of range for my UV5R8W. But ,... I can hand hewn the frequencies manually. Is that your same experience or not? Thanks again for sharing. Love this little hand held

Fantastic Lad! Well done! Thank you! I've got a bunch of these radios, going to try it on my newer ones. BTW I'm an old goat , I've been in this hobby for more than 40 years, I really like young folks coming into this wonderful hobby. You know what, this might work on the newer Bao's but more than likely the radio' filter might not allow ( band pass) the displayed frequency IE the 220 band ,or the actual frequency that passes is probably not the one shown. But I don't want to discourage anyone from experimenting, I just don't think the radio will be stable ( might end up with some odd frequency being transmitted) I'm going to buy a tri-band Baofeng to use 220 band again. It's a great band to work, it has the punch of 2 meter band with the penetration of the 70cm band . I just wanted you guys to be aware that programming in a 1.25 meter band might not "take" (especially older Bao's) or it might display that it's on frequency but actually it might be way off frequency. 73 to all🙂

Works great on my uv5r. After the install I noticed that if you are running Chirp on the same pc, in the other setting of the radio you can now adjust upper and lower limits for VHF and UHF. I successfully programed my uv-82hp for 1.25m aswell. **To All...Make sure you are running a acceptable antenna for the broardcast freq. or risk damaging transmitter....**

An excellent video! I will look into this further and check out your software
Besides the UV-5RX3, Baofeng has the BF-R3 as a Tri-Band radio sharing the UV-5R case as well as the UV-S9X3 n a different case. I hear that the UV-9RX3 is also a Tri-Band radio but I never seen one in person (I own the UV-9R-Pro).
I have a few UV-5R that I share with friends (when we go out camping and other outings), so I can experiment on one of those and try them out with my BF-R3.
I am a Licensed Ham in the USA, but I am not one of those who sream and yell about the negativities about the Baofeng, I am more about getting on the airwaves and making contacts on anything I can get my hands on. The Boafeng is just an option for me to do this.
    Great work and thank you!

I only use them to listen to local emergency drama really but I do appreciate videos like these and I must say, I’ve talked to quite a few licensed ham guys and a lot of them seem stuck up, it’s nice to see the comments from people who are positive. Thank you.

Note that this only tells the SOC to broadcast on 1.25m (and RX) but the secondary stage RF Power amplifiers are not tuned for that band. As such you are driving them via the primaries, and they are passives. If you put a watt meter on your radio you will note that the TX power is less than 1/2 a watt. This means that likely since there are no filters, decoupling, etc on the output if you run a bad antenna you will possibly blow the SOC (which is the radio). However, listening on 1.25m is of course no problem at all (other than sensitivity issues due to lack of filtering). The UV-5R is not a clean signal to begin with but the spurious harmonics on this radio mod reset the standards a bit. Again, not a sad HAM here, as with the power reduced so much who cares, just don't use a modded UV-5R to drive one of those 220 amps, that could get messy. I need to dig into the logic on this but just a quick check when I modded a tripower I noted that the RF power out was "inverted" so I am curious how the triband RF power amplifier side is connected to the SOC now.....

    • @koreanhamguy2715
      @koreanhamguy2715  Рік тому +1

Yeah, I've personally only used it for testing purposes and just to have it in the radio to begin with (not much 200mhz stuff going around here). I've heard couple AM transmissions in the 200mhz band (Not sure where they originated, the license of the frequencies are somewhat questionable, but emission designators and signal is AM), sounds absolutely horrible for AM (they weren't made for AM modulation). Just a "cool thing to have"

I just managed to mod my UV-5RHT with CHIRP!!! (the method show in this video didn't work for me)
Here is how I did it (maybe you can make another video about this if you will be able to replicate it):
    1. Run CHIRP (my version is CHIRP daily-20200807)
    2. Connect your Bao
    3. Read from your device, not to loose your channels in memory (if you can't read - check for another COM port)
    4. [optional] Save your channel list to file (backup)
    5. On the left side you have vertically oriented tabs "Memory" "Settings" "Browser"
    6. Click "Settings"
    7. Choose "Other settings"
    8. At "VHF Upper Limit" change 179 to 260 (one can experiment with other bands UHF/VHF and limits - but for your own responsibility)
    9. Save file as.. (new backup)
    10. Send to device.

Is the software reading the data from your radio first and than adapting the possible frequency ranges to the type of radio? If the software recognises the hardware it should be possible to enhance existing VHF range to 108-200 MHz in FM and AM, right? Do you know if it does that? I do not encourage transmitting without antennas, in my own experience I personally had no issues hence why I decided to demonstrate without it on. The 178 to 215 MHz is US TV channels 7 to 13
    215 to 230 is 1.25 meter
I don't remember what frequency the Military Aircraft AM band starts
But the military aircraft start right above the 222 MHz band
The military has the entire 230 to 440 MHz in the US
The military aircraft usually is around three hundred megahertz and I don't remember where the break is between military aircraft and military ground I think it's around 350 MHz and from 350 to 420 is for military ground FM
Which is why I was truly shocked when I started seeing the 380 to 420 MHz business radios which other countries use that band for business and I saw the 352 380 MHz radios and realized other countries use that band for commercial FM two-way radios for business
I don't know about the 500 or 600 or 700 band in other countries and they may use most of that for cellular or they may use it for military or something else but it is interesting that so many countries allocate differently instead of a uniform band plan
I would have thought after WWII that everyone would have adopted exactly the same band plan so that every country would use the same frequencies for the same uses but apparently everybody did whatever they wanted to do with the exception of the aircraft band They somehow decided that 108 to 136 would be aircraft worldwide
But even radio regular FM entertainment wideband radio is different in each country so the frequency range is different and that is confusing as hell
But I think you're right and the tri-band radio is the one you reference that I have and it seems like they did just load a different firmware and range for the radio and this model has a lot more capability than what it was marketed for and I would love to see somebody edit the firmware and push the range at least for the receive to its absolute maximum to see if we can get up into the 700 and 800 band
Years ago I actually was able to read the Motorola radio firmware and convert the hex to figure out what its limits were and program new limits and expand the radio to go down to 700 and up to 950 and I removed the RX filters and was able to program in the frequencies way outside what the radio was designed to do and it worked perfectly
I would bet these can be changed as well if we can figure out how they put in the ranges and change the value for the upper limit from 520 to 950

alt+s. You have to hold the alt key for those menu letter shortcuts. That's some Windows 3.1/95 era shit.
They also make a Tri-band antenna. Which is what I have on my UV-5X3. I'm using the Nagoya NA-320A, which is a full 1/8 wave length one (45cm/17.7"). I think they make the shorter rubber ducky style in tri-band as well. But why pay for one of those when you could just buy the full whip?
1.25M is mostly useful for Marine use. I have it for that. There's supposedly 1.25M HAM repeaters in my area, but I've never heard anyone broadcast on them.

@@koreanhamguy2715 Alright follow up report. First, holy crap the programming cables are sooooooo much easier to use under Linux than Windows. They're just supported by the current Linux Kernel out of the box, plug in and done. Second, I didn't even need to use the Chinese software. I just went into CHIRP settings and changed the VHF upper limit to 225MHz from 174MHz. Works perfectly.
Probably would be a good idea to get it the same Tri-Band full whip as my other radio, but I imagine the Dual-Band full whip can be used without major issue. The slightly different length just means the native median frequency of the antenna is different, but it should still be well with in range. Also it appears then, the only difference between the UV-5R and UV-5X3, is that the 5X3 allows for two VHF range perimeters and the 5R for only one. Meaning I have 174-220MHz locked off on the 5X3, but the 5R has full access to that range. Which leaves it open to tune Television broadcasting frequencies. I wonder if the 5X3 firmware can be flashed to the 5R. I'll have to find it first. I also really wonder if there's any actual hardware differences or if it's purely firmware.

    • @nikdog419
      @nikdog419 Рік тому

@@koreanhamguy2715 I started looking into changing the firmware, and from what I could find the ROM is some kind of one time flash type. So theoretically the radios are permanently flashed to the ROMs they came with, unless you de-solder the ROM and replace it. Which is actually the easy part, the hard part is getting a chip with the correct ROM on it.
I wonder if something signifiant has changed in the CHIRP source code since you've tried it. 🤷‍♂ I've definitely noticed while the radio now operates in that frequency range, and I can program those frequencies on the device, CHIRP still refuses to program that range. It knows the stock range for the UV-5R and will lock you to that. Sounds prime for a bug report to request, rather than using a radio model definition for programmable range, the software should query the radio's settings variables for programmable range.

@@ChrisZwolinski I mean, out of a cheap handheld like UV5R I really can't expect them to add Micro SD slot or have larger memory. Mainly because this means that they have to redesign everything (case, motherboard etc). Which ends up being very costly for both manufacturers and consumers. Really, it's a radio that's meant to be simple and accessible which is why I love the radio despite having all my other handhelds, scanners, sdr etc. You simply cannot beat simplicity. Also, in my opinion I am against having larger capacity simply because of the small screen and lack of banks/zones meaning to navigate through channels, you have to go through all of them (at least if you don't have the channel # memorized). These are all my personal opinions though and at the end of the day, if you want anything other than a simple baofeng. There is no other option than to buy a better radio (although it would still be interesting and cool to see baofeng make changes such as more channel capacity in normal UV5R lineup).
