    This video is an introduction to ionic bonding, which is one type of chemical bonding. Ionic bonds hold together metal and nonmetal atoms. In ionic bonding, electrons are transferred from a metal atom to a nonmetal atom, creating ions. These ions have opposite charge, so they stick together.

      I mean u can’t start with the basics again every year, but the teachers should make u all feel comfortable(so u can ask any questions, even if there stupid). On time my teacher was so happy because I asked a question. Just ask them there is no shame.

      I noticed that in the beginning of the video. I have a question. In the video you mentioned that "Chloride" is the name of a Chlorine atom with a negative charge. You said that that's what sets the names chlorine and chloride apart. So my question is, does that mean that the chlorine atom in Hydrogen Chloride has a negative charge or is a negative ion? If so, how is that possible that the type of bond between the hydrogen and chlorine atoms is covalent?

    What a great example at how to teach. I remember being at school and switching off because I couldn't understand what was being taught as important details were left out and that left gaps in building understanding. These lessons are brilliant because they are clear and give the necessary details which makes it easier to grasp and that builds a desire to learn more. I know some who want to teach their children at home and I will definetely point them to these videos of Tyler's.

    Why is the clorine atom bigger than the sodium? I thought atoms (due to their amount of protons pulling their energylevels closer to the radius) were smaller from left to right.

      Sandy, you are correct - a chlorine atom is smaller than a sodium atom, but a chloride ion is bigger than a sodium ion (because the sodium has lost its outermost electron shell when it makes an ion). So a solid plastic model cannot really show the sizes. But it is an excellent video nonetheless.

      Actually when Cl recieves an electron from Na, than Cl changes from an atom to an anion and it gets much bigger in size during this change, because electrons repel, and when there are more electrons, the electrons will try to stay as far away from each other as possible. So there is an actual error in this video,because they drew the Cl atom about the same size as the anion...
      Anions are bigger than the corresponding atoms; cations are smaller than the corresponding atoms.

      Sandy Keeton Chlorine is bigger due to its electronegativity.Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract the electrons towards itself in a chemical bond.Electronegativity of Sodium is 0.9 and electronegativity of Chlorine is 3.0

    The two models you chose to show sodium atom and chlorine atom should be actually reversed. Sodium atom is larger than chlorine atom. As you go across the periodic table, the atomic radius gets smaller.

    • @tdewitt451
      @tdewitt451  9 років тому +18

      Well it's more complicated than that, though, and this is why it's hard to show in the video. You're right that the sodium atom is bigger than the chlorine atom. But after sodium loses an electron (which comprises its whole outer shell), its atomic radius significantly shrinks. Once it's an ion, sodium (+1) is smaller than chlorine (-1). Now in a perfect world, I'd have some way of showing the change in size with my physical models, but I don't know quite how to do that, and I'm trying not to make this stuff too complicated.

      +Tyler DeWitt hello, i asked my teacher today if ionic bonding is always between metal and non metals, she said no not always ?? what's your take on this thanx

    • @tdewitt451
      @tdewitt451  8 років тому +3

      +joe xtz I don't agree with your teacher. I can't think of a single example of ionic bonding that doesn't happen between metals and nonmetals. Maybe ask your teacher for an example? But I can't think of any. On the other hand, sometimes (very rarely) metals and nonmetals can bond together with covalent bonds, instead of ionic bonds. Maybe that's what your teacher is thinking of?
