personally I don't think they all do. I think its typically "user" error..... I wear a half wig and I love it. I just make sure that I give my hair that TLC it needs while tucked underneath..
I first had crochet in my hair in the early 90’s I removed it two days later after taking Motrin to deal with the pain, dumb me fast forward to two weeks ago did the crochet again I got done on Saturday and removed it on Monday, never again I repeat NEVER AGAIN!!!!!
I put mini twist in my 12 year old daughters hair. She's all natural. Left them in for 4 weeks and even washed her hair with the twists still in. When I took them out the other day I wanted to punch myself in the face!! Never again
I agree with you. I feel like I've broken off so much hair trying to put it in protective styles. Even worse, I'd end up taking them out after one week. 😂 All that manipulation for nothing. Btw... I'm so happy you mentioned wash and gos. I jumped on the eco styler train. 😝 The amount of growth I've seen in just 3 weeks is insane. I took this pic for my avi abt 3.5 weeks ago and my hair is noticeably longer. Even my white mama was stunned at the comparison pics and said "your hair grows faster than mine!" So basically I spent 5 years fussing with my hair trying to retain length when all along the answer (for me) was to wear defined wash and gos. **EDIT** I just wanted to clarify that I'm not half white lol. A woman took me in and I call her my mother now (long story). I'm fully African American. But anyway I just wanted to say that black hair grows just as fast as other races hair, contrary to popular belief.
@@thatthingyouseeatthecorner5249 Funny I did a 23andme test long after leaving this comment and it turns out I'm 1/3 european. But most African Americans are only 60-80% African. I still identify as black. 😁😁💁🏽♀️
You said a mouth full with this one right here 👏👏👏. I have been natural for over 10 years and wash and go was my protective style. The natural hair care police tried to tell me otherwise, yet my hair has always flourished...curls defined, moisturized and retained length. I'm on my new journey of locs, but I'm glad you made this vid 😊
You're so right! I love to wear either my puff or a bun with my wash n go hair as a protective style and that has worked amazing for me. It has also saved me money and trips to stylists for the many popular protective styles too.
This is one of those videos where you're saying all the things everyone's already been thinking but not saying to stay with the status quo. Its always been interesting to me that some people preach the gospel of protective styling (as tucking away ends) but then you see some people who CONSTANTLY wear their hair out and still retaining length. I really appreciate how you try to help people find what works for them rather than encouraging viewers to do things exactly the way you do them. Great video.
I love this video. I feel like people don't truly know how to take care of their hair so they do what they see other people do. What works for some people may not necessarily work for you even if you have the same texture hair. Then there are those people that believe a style should last forever smh. People need to know what works for their hair and stick to what works for them.
Great information boo. I use to wear crochet braids, brakds& sew in's and noticed my hair was shedding too much and U edges were getting thinner. For the last couple of weeks I being wearing my own hair out and my hair growth has gotten so much better. So I understand completely where you! Thank you sharing love😊
I love kinky twists as my protective style. I do think the damage to edges some people face are attributed to neglect. Don't leave extensions on your hair for to long and don't do them to tightly. I made the mistake when I was in high school of doing kinky twists back to back for a whole year, no break. That did damage my hair line. Now, I do kinky twists once or twice a year for two months each time max and I've gotten the length retention while still preserving the edges I've regrown since then. It's also really important to take the time to make sure the take down is handled with care as well. My rule of thumb is if it took me 8 hours to style it, I'm dedicating 4 hours to remove it and to make sure I'm not losing any progress. I would do the same for my skin after putting on makeup for the day. I'm spending at least half of that time taking care of my skin by the end of it.
Lol I JUST took down mini twists today. I wore them for only 4 days plus I enjoyed the mini twist out style I did today. I hated the whole process install and removal...I do love doing my usual chunky twist out over all that extra stuff. I recently learned how to do a crown flat twist and that to me is a simpler way to keep manipulation low. I don't let others play in my hair either they don't treat it right and I don't need setbacks. I want to try wigs but haven't found the right one for me. Protective to me means gentle installs gentle take down and gentle handling at every step everyday (finger detangling 99% of the time.) . Being rough with textured hair causes so much damage and thinning.
I grew 2-3 inches in 2 months of having crochet braids, edges intact. It just depends who hands are in one's head. 🤷🏾♂️ my hair does well with cornrows, no weave added.
I really have to take the time to say that I TRULY adore and appreciate your channel. You talk nothing but the FACTS! Every time I watch one of your videos, I catch myself hyping you up through the screen cause you just speaking the REAL ISH. I couldn't agree with you more. I realized that wash and go's are a great protective style for me (even as a 4c girl) because I set my coils in place and the hair is too stiff to wrap around other strands. As long as I don't keep it in more than a week I'm good. I thought faux locs would be a great one. Boy was I wrong. I kept them in 3 weeks and my hair was Sooooo dry! You just gotta find what works for you.
Vamica Bony I feel like all hair types can wash and go. But I also feel like I can't say that cause 4c girls would come for me like "you're 4a/4b you don't know what you're talking about". 😭 I only just figured out how to wash and go with no breakage last month. Lol. And I've been natural since 2012 😩
ELD (Edge Line Deficiency) My coworker got it. I told her to fall back on wearing crochet braids back to back now her edges are creeping they falling back 😲
For crochet braids I always use a hair close to my texture and leave out my edges. I then flat twist my edges down and create bangs using the crochet hair. Maybe it's not as cute as the way other people style it, but I'm not going to let my edges run away from me again
My little sister had gotten crochets for school, she wanted them but my mother was reluctant. Low and behold two days after they were installed thy were coming in down they were too tight and too big. Too many little girls have those chunky crochets and I’m knowing they’re uncomfortable.
Mini twist is the devil. I did it and was washing my hair in it because i saw people doing 6 month's challenge i almost died trying get tangles out. I don't know what to do with my hair i just leave it in chunky braids slap my bonnet on and wear beanies or scarfs. I have 3c/4a hair thats fine/high density If i wear my hair out it just get super tangles & ssk so i only do it on special occasions (which is rare) so i dont jave problem retaining length. I need fine a good protective style that won't leave ne bald that doesn't need weaves/extensions because ive never worn those and i dont think im about that life
PunkGirlRock if you can braid you can try a crown flat twist or crown braid its so cute and simple. I'm gonna do my hair in a crown flat twist for my job interview!
NaturalMo my dad says they look like horns when i do them. I can braid i just need practice on my hair because very thick and always ends up looking weird. Thanks
PunkGirlRock horns? I can't imagine how thats possible because its flat around your head. I see the best result on wet hair but I say don't give up and get other's opinions. My First attempt was dissapointing to me but i got lots of compliments at work! Sometimes you and your own family are your own worst critics. You ARE your hair's master and remember that God did not give you more than what you can handle.
Super super true! I have my hair in twists right now (with my own hair) because I have been so busy with school and work 😂 I practically live in them. Thank you for this video for sure though
I stopped protective styling and started mini braids in my hair and left it in there and it's locked. Yayy love it now. I don't do nothing to it but semi free-form and wash it.
I've heard so much praise about crocheted hair but when I got my hair crocheted (faux locs) I ended up with so much shedding/breakage. And yes the crochet braids were legit pulling my edges back. Just no.
Queen Red I had faux locs too and had to take them out because they were so heavy. Mine weren't even that long 😐. They looked nice, but definitely wasn't worth it for all that tension on my scalp.
I swear my first thought was mini twists! I always suffered more damage than retention doing that devil hairstyle😂 Mine would be extremely matted at the roots it was horrible. My hair grew the most with styling once a week and transitioning a braid out into a bun when it got frizzy. 🤷🏾♀️ I detest crochet braids I'm sick of seeing that silly ass hairstyle idc how "invisible" they think their part is, issa *lie*!!😂😂
I have a co-worker who is trying to stretch out her braids. I remember the tutorial you did about how the braids put stress on your hair as they grow out. And I swear every time I walk by her desk I hear them those braids either singing Love lift us up where we belong or Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer.
I honestly don't consider the style to be protective at all honestly. It always ends up bulky with a lot of hair then you have to think about it.... most people don't just wear it down because it's sooo much hair so they end up pulling the hair back which tends to cause stress along the front hairline especially as the braids grow out. Crochets can be done properly but it truly depends on your braid pattern and the proportioning the hair which can be very difficult if you are trying to fill in gaps and spaces.
Agreed!!! My idea of a protective style is wash n go’s it’s the only way I can maintain my hair for the week. I’ve been doing wash n go’s for the past four years every week and my hair is healthy, it’s strong and it’s growing beautifully. My hair is short right now so all I have to do is put my bonnet on at night and in the morning wet it to “wake” up my curls and bam I’m done and I do this everyday and my hair is good. When my hair was longer all I had to do was put it up into a pineapple 🍍 at night, in the morning take it down, shake out my hair and go. So yeah wash n go’s do work for some of us 😊 everyone’s idea of protective styling is different. Also I experience zero breakage with wash n go’s
I agree with what you said about one protective style working for one person and not for another. Because if it were not for minitwists, I would not be at the length I am now. And a lot of the other styles you’ve mentioned, many people have been able to grow their hair to long lengths using those same styles. I think of one youtuber who wear weaves year round... Every year she does her length check and her hair is twice as long as the year before.
Im just now viewing this video and all i can say is thank you...i have heard some of this before but was not all within depth... It seems as if i saw more growth when all i was able to do with my hair was wash and go's because of its length at the time...i do believe i will go back to my twists and wash and go's
I no longer do mini twists. I did find that the take down was like you described. Now that my hair is longer I use large twists as a protective style. But it's something I do rarely now. My go to PS is my "work week bun". tried wash and goes and that is the devil for me. Had so many tangles on the second day I was like never again. I rather mini twists on my head than a wash and go
awesome vid! I couldn't agree with you more about those mini twists. i noticed i experienced more breakage than i wanted every time i took them down. also like idk if its just me but i feel uncomfortable with the idea of wearing fake hair. ive been wanting to buy a ponytail to switch my style up a bit while also protecting my ends. i think it would look cute but at the same time it bothers me knowing its not my hair and of coarse it would be obviouse to others.....idk maybe I'm just weird like that.
I have been natural for 4 years. I normally wear a wash a go every week. I get my hair straightened and cut every 3 months. I have crochet braids for the first time ever due to how easy everyone says they are. I completely agree with you. I can feel my edges pulling in to front and back. My head is also itching like crazy. I was told I could leave them in for about 2 months. I have only had them in for about a week. Not even sure if they will last 2 weeks.
Omg edge line defiance. Love you. I hollered. I don't comment but so funny mini twist (I just have top like pixie but back and sides I cut bald) I like but 2 wks is it no matter what tied up whatever longer than that dreads. Yeah I know.😉😘I don't think I spelled that right, but you know what I mean.
Thank you for sharing this. It makes perfect sense and I agree with you. I appreciate that although this is just your opinion, you have the knowledge to back it up and are willing to share it. One of the things that I admire about you as well as Naptural85 and others, is your desire to look out for the health of our hair. One of my co-worker's also recommends twists as good protective styles, so I'm working on getting mine to my liking. I'm flat twist and braiding challenged so pray for a sista, lol.
I had senegalese(?) twists. Tufts of hair came out when I had them removed. I will Never get twists again. Thank you for this. I am feeling vindicated, bc I thought I'd done something wrong.
EXCUSE ME ANYONE I NEED SOME ADVICE PLEASE Currently the feed in braid style I have, caused a lot of damaged, due to it being blow dried without my usual protein treatment. After I got it done, I decided that I would take care of my hair myself. Currently finger coils are my best option, but I recently got the hang of twisting. I even found a way for me to do my own braids with extensions. I know that with my hair, I need to stretch it out since it is so coiling. If I blow dry my hair on low heat and use a heat protect-ant serum will still be protecting the hair. Also to clarifying, If i put braids/twists/etc in my hair, but it is not tight and my edges are protected as well as take care of when needed, am I truly protecting my hair, am I truly protective styling. I just want to have an idea of how to care for my hair, I feel like I am still clueless even though I am almost 4 years natural. Please help, anyone!!!
I agree with you %100.....I thought my sew-in was protective. I was wrong after 1 month my hair was so dry, brittle, and my edges was so thin. Never again...
I love my 4C hair but I hate that I have to tuck it or put my ends away to make it grow and retain length. I know why I am not retaining length, because I love to leave my hair out. I finally decided to use protective styling to protect my ends more or rock it short!
Sfkjkjkdwll *like VELCRO* Anyways, this was informative as usual. I'm pretty low maintenance and basic. Since I started my natural hair journey 9 months ago, I've been rocking things like finger coils, 2 strand twists and recently ive moved up to flat twists (took me a few months to learn and they're finally decent). I'll do them every wash day and then throw my bonnet on and wear them under a headwrap constantly. I've really only experienced one setback as I'm still learning what my hair likes or needs but this has worked pretty well for me. Thanks so much for the upload!
I never wear extra hair. Ive been keeping my own hair in twists for about a month and I've seen growth but I still have breakage! I've been working on moisture retention.
is the breakage from the style or a much needed trim? Do not hang on to them dead ends! #health over length. it could be a lack of moisture while in the style, too.
I appreciate your commentary. You raise a lot of good points that I think the majority of people know, but choose to ignore. What hairstyles do you consider protective? Especially, long-term styles. I've tried braids, twists, wigs, crochet braids, and even wearing my natural hair, but I've seen very little progress in the overall health of my hair.
How do you feel about clip-ins that match your texture? Wear them in moderation that the combs aren't thinning your hair. Can still moisturize your natural hair and do all that you need to do to maintain your hair..
Yas! Bring back common sense 😂. Ive cut and fucked up my edges wearing chrochet braids😒. I finally realized I was being a dummy. So now trying to regrow edges and my short patch. Learned how to stretch hair without heat. I had the best growth when I wore no weave and left my hair alone in a style for at least a week. That's it.
Starr Millwood that's exactly whose method I use! I love her and doing her styles in my hair is what grew it in the first place. Im going to have to try that shampoo conditioner combo.
Senegalese twists are the devil. Twist and roll equals tension equals breakage. In one sitting my hair was noticeably thin when I took them out.. I cut my hair trying to take out crochet braids. If I get braids, I'm the only one installing them. Tried weave and got thin edges. Wash n go has been my best friend. Once a week I wash, deep condition w/heat and style . I get nothing but more hair. I get edges, nape, thickness, length and real real cute hunti!!!!👌🏾💯❤
do you have a video on hydral fatigue? if that's even a "thing". ive been curious about it hence it comes off a little contradictory, especially within the natural community where the number one rule is "moisture! moisture! moisture!" lol
Billie Rydale I had thought that I had experienced it before when my hair got damaged by over using the hair steamer but it was just heat damage... To be honest I don't think I believe in hygral fatigue anymore.... I've never experienced it nor have I seen it...
i always wondered why braiders almost never wash your hair and want it blow dried before they start, or wash it then dont condition it and blow dry it all rough with little or no heat protectant... like you are damaging my hair and then covering it up so i cant see the mess you are making on my head for months...my mom used to swear by box braids though. she always said the braids had to be longer than your hair so they would protect your ends lol. you can grow your hair in alot of styles, but for some of us its easier to have our hair out of sight and out of mind.
“What’s the point of protecting your hair if you're damaging your hair to protect it...” omg I’ve asked that same question!!!!!!!!
Sandi F me too! All these wigs and weaves ripping edges out ain't protecting nothing
wigs... damaging... lol. ok

🙋🏽🙋🏽🙋🏽 Omg mini twists caused me SO much breakage, it was ridiculous. But they're so cute though lol.
THEY WERE!!!! That's why I ain't waste my time with them anymore lol

I damaged my ends “protecting” them with constantly twisting manipulating and detangling with water and oil and that damn rubber based denman brush.

I have a co-worker who is trying to stretch out her braids. I remember the tutorial you did about how the braids put stress on your hair as they grow out. And I swear every time I walk by her desk I hear them those braids either singing Love lift us up where we belong or Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer.
Wow, I have to rethink and make changes, because I am a wig person but not much length.
I tend to do ten to twelve large twist then I'll put my twist in a low bun for the week. Sew ins and mini twist for me are the devil.
Lmao he so funny he kills me with the faces !!!
Another great video ! I'm glad you approach this topic.
Now I'm second guessing getting crochet hair. Thanks for this info.
Let us pray for all the poor souls that have had their poor edges snatched 😂😂😂
Beautydivine very true! My hair has been doing very well with weaves. Its all in the person and most importantly the installation.
When you said "you ain't about to waste my time with this bs" I died! Love the message of the video btw
Exactly!! I was constantly going back and forth about getting Senegalese twists but I'm afraid of the damage to my natural hair!!!
Glad you made this video. Got me thinking!!
You can always make sense out no sense
Thank you
💜
Great video! Team bun here. I've retained excellent length and my edges 😂.
I am definitely one of those "wash and gos minimize breakage and tangles" people.
Bravo...thought i was misunderstanding and u heard my deepest thoughts....Merci Merci Beaucoup ❤🌸🎶🌸
Thank You so much I needed this information You are awesome
"...snagging on everything like velcro" Lol! Enjoyed the vid.
Everything u said was on point!! 😂😂
I've been dying for an upload 😂😂😂
I had senegalese(?) twists. Tufts of hair came out when I had them removed. I will Never get twists again. Thank you for this. I am feeling vindicated, bc I thought I'd done something wrong.
I have had an issue with the term proactive style for the same reason!!!!!
Amen. Preach to the birds lool
My go to protective style is two flat twists with the ends fucked away.
My protective style which was a crochet and it snatched out my edges. Now I never touched my edges it was the fake hair rubbing against my edges.
Omg, say that!!!! I thought I was just tripping
Wash n gos are my best friend lol! : ))
#truth #facts
#Always informative information and food for thought 💭
Preach 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Sfkjkjkdwll *like VELCRO*
Anyways, this was informative as usual.
💯 this video is on point thanks
Well said.
I never wear extra hair. Ive been keeping my own hair in twists for about a month and I've seen growth but I still have breakage! I've been working on moisture retention.
Why do you think you are experiencing so much breakage?
AfrikanHairGod ❤❤❤ you. I think I haven't been moisturizing my low porosity hair enough or correctly. Ive started the MHM recently. Please advise.
AfrikanHairGod also I have fantasy coloring, purple. I know it adds to dryness but I loooove color.
He got a video on how to re-moisturize your twist.
is the breakage from the style or a much needed trim? Do not hang on to them dead ends! #health over length. it could be a lack of moisture while in the style, too.
I appreciate your commentary. You raise a lot of good points that I think the majority of people know, but choose to ignore. What hairstyles do you consider protective? Especially, long-term styles. I've tried braids, twists, wigs, crochet braids, and even wearing my natural hair, but I've seen very little progress in the overall health of my hair.
i miss you doing these videos!!!
I don't usually comment, but I was wondering what your professional opinion was on this influx of the "dry wash and go" luv ya 🤗
The hair gospel 🙌🙌🙌 #education
Good question.
I love my mini twists tho! 😣😣😣
"Edge Line Deficiency Syndrome" LOL!!
i always wondered why braiders almost never wash your hair and want it blow dried before they start, or wash it then dont condition it and blow dry it all rough with little or no heat protectant... like you are damaging my hair and then covering it up so i cant see the mess you are making on my head for months...my mom used to swear by box braids though. she always said the braids had to be longer than your hair so they would protect your ends lol. you can grow your hair in alot of styles, but for some of us its easier to have our hair out of sight and out of mind.
I've never worn extensions for protection. It's always been for aesthetic reasons despite the risks.
