I'm Maltese and as soon as I saw this video's title, I was like "Oh lord, this guy doesn't know what he got himself into". The reason for this is that a couple of years ago there was a popular-ish UA-cam channel that made a video about our accent and got it completely wrong and the comment section was bombarded with angry and offensive comments and thousands of Maltese people on Facebook were sharing the video and writing how disgusted they were with it. My first thought was that this video would be a repetition of that but I was wrong I'm surprised at how much research went into this detailed and very surprisingly accurate depiction of this small, secret island of ours. You even got some of our more obscure features and information right. Well done and thank you for doing my country justice with your work :)
If you've never been here, you will be surprised at how much there is to see and enjoy on this tiny island. I sometimes feel like it is too small and limited, but that's only because I've been here almost 27 years. It has something for everyone. It has a lot of clubs for the younger generation, a lot of restaurants and a lot of places to chill for people who have retired. There are plenty of nice views, especially whenever the sea is involved. The sea and our beaches are beautiful. As you can clearly see from the video, there's a lot of culture, as well. The wages aren't good, but then again, the cost of living isn't high, except for rent. My French and Italian friends say it is much easier to find a job here, so that's a plus.
Fun fact: the name of the capital, Valletta came directly from the name of the french grand master of the order of saint John of malta ( Jean de La Valette) who was the grand master at the time of the Great Siege by the turks. It was a crushing victory for the order against overwhelming odds. The decisive actions and wise choices of the grand master had an important part in this victory. For french the name of the capital is "La Valette".
To be fair, everyone had his moment of glory. The turks were formidable conquerors during many years. But during the great siege they were outmatched by the knights ( 1 knights was cleary worth 10 or more normal ottomans soldiers). We must also not forget the bravery of the maltese people who were of a great help during the fight (notably during the fight in the port were they fought ottomans with knife in the sea to defend the chains garding the entrance to the port). In the end, ottomans chose the retreat in fear of the reinforcements coming from spain when the knights were at the breaking point (only between 300 and 350 knights left on the 600 who took part in the battle). To the opposite, between 10000 and 20000 turks died. Thanks to that the order gained eternel glory and survive until today. Fortunatly nowodays they came back to their first occupation: being a humanitarian association. Aleikum assalam from perhaps a future member of this order.
Yeah, died hunting only 3 years after The Siege. His Tomb is with Starkey in St John's Co Cathedral. Seen it. Far end from entrance to the left, down the stairs.

my dad told me about Maltese fishers that always fished off the shore of libya back in the 60s-90s & how one of them decided to live in his childhood neighbourhood & he was just the old maltese guy that lived alone but was loved & invited to all the neighbourhood's events. We also used to have a quite large maltese community in my hometown in Libya.
The reason the flag has a medal on it is because the entire island was awarded the St George's across after WW2 for the role they played and bombing they went through

To share, Malta has more a shared cultural link in common with the island of Sicily itself than with Italy as both were under Islamic Rule (Emirate of Sicily, or Siquilya) during the 9-10th century until the Normans conquered in 12th century) and then the Kingdom of Sicily afterwards, resulting in shared lexicology from Siculo-Arabic which is a direct descendant of Maltese - l-lingwa Maltija (it became extinct in Sicily but survived in Malta as its current form) - Both Sicilian and Maltese have words and place names derived from Siculo-Arabic (babbaluciu/bebbuxu, zagara/zahra, tanura/kenur, zibbibu/ zebbib...etc...) - very cool! And to note, much of Maltese's more Italian-like words come via route of the Sicilian language (which developed separately from Italian [itself derived from a dialect of Tuscan which came much later than Sicilian]), and was the language of the Kingdom of Sicily). Ronan Vialon Yes, Maltese is a descendant of Siculo-Arabic which in turn is from the Maghrebi Arabic branch so it's no surprise that Tunisian and Maltese are pretty understandable in mutual intelligibility. @@boltz44 haha you are really zero in history? He said he is from Tunisia not english. The english never attacked us. Germans and italians attacked us. Such an amazing video and I’m glad Australia got a mention towards the end. My grandparents on my fathers side were born in Malta and moved to Australia in the 1930’s. 10 years ago I got my dual Maltese citizenship as I am 1/2 Maltese by blood. I’m going to visit my country for the first time in my life in 3 weeks and I’m so damn excited. It’s been a long time in the making as I’m 27 years old! All the stories my family have told me about Malta and I’ll finally be able to see and experience it for myself.
Oh yeah, one of Australia’s bets AFL players (it’s an Australian only sport) comes from Malta which is pretty cool :D One of my fav episodes definitely
I recently discovered your videos and, since I am Maltese and know (almost) everything about Malta, I thought I would use this video as a litmus test: if you can get Malta right, I will trust you with the rest. And you did. Good job, and thank you.
What is ironic is that the day you released the video was the national holiday of Santa Marija where we islanders celebrate the defeat of the Turks during the Great Siege and the arrival of the USS Ohio arrived in the Grand harbour during the Second World War after suffering heavy battle damage and helped the island defend itself from constant air raids by the Luftwaffe by bringing in tonnes of supplies that replenished the island. We also remember the lives lost on the perilous convoys to save Malta from destruction. In the evening, many villages would light fireworks to celebrate the national holiday.
When I went to Malta I realised a few things: Everything is beige. It literally feels like the whole country is built on and with compressed sand. The food is amazing. It's kinda North African and kinda Italian, but definitely its' own thing. The language is a trip. Looking at Maltese text feels confusing, and listening to people speaking the language doesn't leave you less confused.
I love how I’m Maltese but understand this cause I’m shite at it but honestly we have some schools which are tal-Pepe as we call them which basically means those private schools that mainly speak English and are bad at Maltese We also have an international school called verdala but it’s f the most expensive in Malta We have great food like pastizzi ( pronounced pastitszi I guess) snails ( which are surprisingly good) fenek(rabbit) the Maltese sausage (which cod quite peppery) twisties Kinnie imqarun ( pronounced imugharoon I guess it’s like a mix of pasta meat and some eggs) timpana ( which is imqarun with pastry around it) ross il forn ( which is baked rice so it’s imqarun but rice instead of pasta) figoli ( which are traditional Easter pastries made with this almond filling and a cookie like outside) and many more We have horrible politics We celebrate feasts like every day We have dialects of sorts ( the gozitans have this weird way of saying stuff while some people from sliema ( slieema) or at least that’s where they mostly come from but honestly we all do it ,have the Pepe dialect meaning they switch from English to Maltese a lot We have a lot of history aka We were the most bombed country in WWII but we kept strong We don’t walk to school unless ur very close but we take the van the picks up from our homes Our football team sucks but we love the sport anyway ( literally in my maths class all they talked about was football and it was one of the answers in the exam) We have to get married in a church if we are Christian We have to learn Maltese from a young age and we have to get it to go to sixth form Oh another thing our school system and health care One the school system is different we have school till 16 6th form till 18 and university which is free btw and we get a monthly payment to go but if we don’t it’s lowered Two our health care is free cause we pay taxes Our government sucks like they killed a woman cause she spoke up about it No didn’t kill assassinated like blew up her car and it was like the town next to two schools We never win anything Most of our schools have uniforms One smart and one P.E. (Tracksuit) We always have to have two side on everything Our government doesn’t care about us or covid And they give their friends balla (a lot of) money and balla villas and yachts for no reason So basically we’re weirded but we’re proud :)
Yeah, Forgotten Weapons did a really cool video recently on the bomb shelters that were carved by hand into the limestone of the island: ua-cam.com/video/SY59wxuW69g/v-deo.html
This was amazing, I've seen many people butcher my country's history and culture in the past. This was a breath of fresh air. The only 'complaint' I have is the pronunciation, but I understand that it's a bit difficult to mimic , all in all good vid, keep it up
Given the fact how close Malta is to Tunisia, it feels sad how there isn't much going on between the two, i never remember hearing about Tunisians travelling to Malta and vice versa, especially with the history both countries share, relations should've been better but Italy's influence is obviously huge on that island. one Maltese guy once told me he was surprised to know that he spoke Tunisian words and that i could understand him easily, they were never taught in schools that Malta was part of Tunisia for centuries thus the confusion.
Well, yes in Malta it looks like living breathing museum but now if you actually look at Malta again you'll see A LOT of cranes. It is everywhere. Some parts of Malta is still really beautiful of course, but now buildings are taking over Malta. I've seen Malta change a lot now...(i live in malta)
@@indiekiddrugpatrol3117 No it's not. The building and 'cranes everywhere' is the country progressing and modernising. Pay no attention to comments such as Prai Mallia's... People such as these can take advantage of another Maltese right, and leave. Feel free to go live in a hut in the Sahara. Not a road or crane in sight. :) Also interesting to point out, that this person says stuff like that, but yet has the Hong Kong skyline as their cover photo!! Hypocritical much?!
@@indiekiddrugpatrol3117 It still does. Having charm and being beautiful doesn't mean to have crap roads (with ridiculous traffic as a result), mega old buildings that cannot fit their purpose anymore. So because we're a small island nation, we're meant to stay small and live in a neglected doll house? Tell that to Singapore. Tell that to Hong Kong. It pisses me off that people bash the country for improvements. Even cities such as London, Paris, New York and Rome started out as villages. I love my country, and Malta is beautiful. But, improvements have to happen as in any country! What would you have us do? Commute to work in horse carriages? Live in a mud hut? Walk on roads that resemble the moon's surface? No. Malta deserves far better, and that is happening.
I've been to Malta so many times and I can never get enough of it - it's so beautiful and the Maltese are such lovely people, all my love to Malta, can't wait to visit again soon ❤️
On 5:53 as a Maltese the way she said pastizzi wasn't normal for me but still an amazing video and thank you for talking about our beautiful island malta!

Hi, Australian here! Pleased to know we have such close ties with Malta - I wasn't aware before, but I'm certainly going to look into it now. Malta seems to be a truly fascinating country. Just wanted to mention that Australia wasn't still a colony at the time of World War I (i.e. ~1910, from the video), as we'd already gained independence in 1901. Not meaning to sound nitpicky, I just know that the whole point of Geography Now is to educate people about the world around them, and I wanted to make sure that the information was available, in light of the fact that I couldn't find it already in the comments. Love the video! From Maltese fans' lovely comments, it seems like you did a pretty good job of researching such a complex place. It only makes me a little sad that Australia came so early on in the series, because they've just gotten better and better! EDIT: Okay, I just looked up Maltese Australians and apparently Shaun Micallef, one of our best comedians, is of Maltese-Irish descent! Not to mention musician siblings Nicky Bomba and Mama Kin, the former of whom was born in Malta before their family emigrated. I saw them both perform at a festival! I'm so excited. :D
That military order is the Knights of Saint John, who fought in the crusades. They had made numerous appearances in the Total War franchise. There's an interesting gaming fact. Just for kicks, Malta has appeared as a map in War Thunder. Can't wait to learn more about them! Keep doing what you're doing.
1:53 I went to Gozo when I was three and on the way back, the ferry was cancelled, so they sent a helicopter to fly everyone back to Malta Airport. It was the first and only time that I flew in a helicopter.
Malta in a summary (by a maltese citizen): - twistees are good, not the best snack tho, i prefer doritos lmao - grandayyy is our god - a great number of adults/elders are fluent in italian, however english and maltese are the languages spoken universally - we get excited over the simplest things, such as being recognized on a popular yt channel ;)) - important quotes: ‘dejaqtli zobbi’ ‘int bil liba?!’ ‘Mur hudu f’sormok :)’ (don’t translate those xoxo) - EVERYONE KNOWS EACHOTHER IN MALTA - a popular snack: pastizzi. Its popular for a reason (find a pic of it you’ll see why) - Our version of 'chavs' are called 'perfs' - Every sentence must contain a swear word (it's a bad habit, dont attack us) - without tourism we'll starve, so visit us lol - i still need to find out who grandayy is irl 🤔
When Malta got independence, the scaremongering British said it would never survive. They said they were over 60 times short of basic supplies such as food. How wrong they were.
Ireland is doing fine. Malta is doing fine. India might be poor, but is so much better off that it was under British rule. Canada is doing fine. Again, Africa might be poor, but is much, much better off that under British rule. Australia is doing brilliantly. China is doing just fine without British influence... Scaremongering seems to be a hobby of the British these days...
TheSharkLord when the British conquered Cyprus they said that if the Cypriots fought for them in WW2 they would join Greece after the war. That never happened. They just used us
Maltese language reminds me a lot of Tunisian dialect ( which is a mixture of many languages : Arabic , French , Italian , Spanish and most of all tamazight the language of natives north African) it's funny how Arabs think that Maltese and amazigh/ Berbers ( natives of north of Africa) are Arabs because they use Arabic words lool , greetings from Tunisia !
Eric Evers Just curious are there any (east) Asians living in Malta? I was wondering if I would experience racism there🤔? It seems like such a beautiful place to go 😍
@@kevinozd5594 He's from Banu Tamim tribe just like me. And I'm from Najd in the Arabian peninsula. It's isolated and it's actually the least mixed due to the harsh climate. So I don't see that there can be any twist to my genealogy.
9:22 Joseph Calleja you have to pronounce it Calleya the letter ( J ) in Maltese it becomes ( Y ) like English. Btw it's a Greek surname Calleja means for farmer or good and sweet, but very common surname in Malta. :)
Iam half Spanish half Moroccan I went to Malta this year 🇲🇹 it was really beautiful & I could read the street signs perfectly clear as it is very similar to our dialect of Arabic also I could understand the people speaking. Good vid ❤️🇲🇦🇪🇸🇲🇹💚

Fun fact in 1956 Malta had a referendum to integrate into part of the United Kingdom. This would have given them three seats in the House of Commons and would have meant most things would have been controlled by the said House of Commons while the Maltese parliament would control more social and public issues such as education and the catholic church. The referendum was approved to join 77% voted For, of a turnout of 59%. Sadly the integration never took place due to reasons financial reasons that ingratiating could have caused and Malta became independent eight years later.
👏I love it. The language also includes Hebrew, Spanish and Portuguese. Regarding the Turks in Malta, we learn that dragut did not manage to enter, however Turks are welcome in Malta, and we have several Turkish food stalls here. Thanks again a really entertaining video

Absolutely great video. I only spotted one very important mistake in the history section. For some strange reason you mention the turks, but Malta ( unlike many other European countries ) never ever fell under Turkish rule. The Maltese won the great siege of 1565. At no point was Malta part of the ottoman empire. The rest is perfect. Very very well done :)

Jason Dykstra actually that's the 8th of September
Jason Dykstra vera hija malti
Okay but the Great Siege and World War 2 victory is on the 8th September not 15 th August
True
I'm Japanese and I've been to malta. Malta was a really beautiful country! I miss the days I spend there. 🥺🥺🥺
I want to go to Japan
When I went to Malta I realised a few things:
Everything is beige. It literally feels like the whole country is built on and with compressed sand.
The food is amazing. It's kinda North African and kinda Italian, but definitely its' own thing.
The language is a trip. Looking at Maltese text feels confusing, and listening to people speaking the language doesn't leave you less confused.
JonasK Don't send Anakin Skywalker there ;)
I agree with the Beige, It’s either beige or Really pale yellow, it doesn’t really make it look nice, but the food is amazing.
I also tried Kinnie, it made me sick for 2 days lol.
Nikolas Lloyd *loved* it there.
I love how I’m Maltese but understand this cause I’m shite at it but honestly we have some schools which are tal-Pepe as we call them which basically means those private schools that mainly speak English and are bad at Maltese
We also have an international school called verdala but it’s f the most expensive in Malta
We have great food like pastizzi ( pronounced pastitszi I guess) snails ( which are surprisingly good) fenek(rabbit) the Maltese sausage (which cod quite peppery) twisties Kinnie imqarun ( pronounced imugharoon I guess it’s like a mix of pasta meat and some eggs) timpana ( which is imqarun with pastry around it) ross il forn ( which is baked rice so it’s imqarun but rice instead of pasta) figoli ( which are traditional Easter pastries made with this almond filling and a cookie like outside) and many more
We have horrible politics
We celebrate feasts like every day
We have dialects of sorts ( the gozitans have this weird way of saying stuff while some people from sliema ( slieema) or at least that’s where they mostly come from but honestly we all do it ,have the Pepe dialect meaning they switch from English to Maltese a lot
We have a lot of history aka We were the most bombed country in WWII but we kept strong
We don’t walk to school unless ur very close but we take the van the picks up from our homes
Our football team sucks but we love the sport anyway ( literally in my maths class all they talked about was football and it was one of the answers in the exam)
We have to get married in a church if we are Christian
We have to learn Maltese from a young age and we have to get it to go to sixth form
Oh another thing our school system and health care
One the school system is different we have school till 16 6th form till 18 and university which is free btw and we get a monthly payment to go but if we don’t it’s lowered
Two our health care is free cause we pay taxes
Our government sucks like they killed a woman cause she spoke up about it
No didn’t kill assassinated like blew up her car and it was like the town next to two schools
We never win anything
Most of our schools have uniforms
One smart and one P.E. (Tracksuit)
We always have to have two side on everything
Our government doesn’t care about us or covid
And they give their friends balla (a lot of) money and balla villas and yachts for no reason
So basically we’re weirded but we’re proud :)
Thankyou so muchhhhh. Finally some people taking about Malta. I’m from there and almost no one knows the place.

Fun Fact: Malta was considered the unsinkable carrier ship in the Med. by the Allies during WWII.
Because...they lost a bunch of carriers?
I was waiting so long for you to upload this video
Well, yes in Malta it looks like living breathing museum but now if you actually look at Malta again you'll see A LOT of cranes. It is everywhere. Some parts of Malta is still really beautiful of course, but now buildings are taking over Malta. I've seen Malta change a lot now...(i live in malta)
When I went there, there was old British trucks and buses everywhere kinda like Cuba, is it still like that?
@@indiekiddrugpatrol3117 No it's not. The building and 'cranes everywhere' is the country progressing and modernising. Pay no attention to comments such as Prai Mallia's... People such as these can take advantage of another Maltese right, and leave. Feel free to go live in a hut in the Sahara. Not a road or crane in sight. :) Also interesting to point out, that this person says stuff like that, but yet has the Hong Kong skyline as their cover photo!! Hypocritical much?!
Chris Eckett the old Malta was beautiful and had more of a charm
Chris MLT when your city is a depressing post modern dump and all the quirks and history has been removed like mine, you’ll understand what I mean.
I've been to Malta so many times and I can never get enough of it - it's so beautiful and the Maltese are such lovely people, all my love to Malta, can't wait to visit again soon ❤️

EDIT:
Okay, I just looked up Maltese Australians and apparently Shaun Micallef, one of our best comedians, is of Maltese-Irish descent! Not to mention musician siblings Nicky Bomba and Mama Kin, the former of whom was born in Malta before their family emigrated. I saw them both perform at a festival! I'm so excited. :D

I still remember the first time I discovered about Malta when I watched "The Italian man who went to Malta".
Absolutely great video. I only spotted one very important mistake in the history section. For some strange reason you mention the turks, but Malta ( unlike many other European countries ) never ever fell under Turkish rule. The Maltese won the great siege of 1565.
