Hi Matt, with the passing of Dick Collins general aviation lost a great ambassador for the use of single engine aircraft as a transportation tool. That’s where I feel you, Jason Miller, JP, Steve Thorne, and Steveo come in. GA needs you guys, and we’re all better off as a result of your collective efforts. So thanks for the awesome video, and of course thank you very much for everything you do for GA.

    • @ginacalabrese3869

GA is dead if the costs of certified airplanes continue to skyrocket and the availability of 100LL dwindles around the world with no true replacement in sight. 40-50 year old cessnas will only remain affordable and airworthy for so long. The future of GA is not in these these guys flying Bonanzas and TBMs. It would also help if all these guys didn't shill for $1000 headsets like Bose because they get them for free. GA needs to get more affordable. The future of GA is more likely in the hands of guys flying kitfoxes and other experimentals.

Rjh Rhjj Hi Rjh, GA is no different than anything else in that the more people participating the less costly it becomes. The actual aircraft one flies to further the cause of GA isn’t relevant. It’s the content which draws interest. May I respectfully suggest you google ‘Oshkosh 2017 images’. I hope you’ll see GA is far from dead. Regards....

Hey Matt, I ran across your videos a few days ago and must say, I’m hooked. Thanks much especially in that I’m on the shelf in recovery mode of a nasty illness. You’re living the life and I appreciate what you’re doing. I’m 62 yrs old and have been a pilot since I was 17, the bulk though has been flying for a paycheck and not a lot of pleasure flying. Again, thanks very much and stay safe, looks like you’ve got a good foundation under you.

Really nice video, and as someone who grew up and lived on the Michigan border, you visited some of my favorite old haunts. Mackinaw Island is one of the prettiest and coolest places in the lower 48, although it's to bad you couldn't get a deal there to stay overnight, as it takes a couple days to see it better..and yes the FUDGE! It's been known for that since the 1800's, so it's the best in the world, even if I'm not much of a sweets person.
Do go back and see Traverse City when it's not being hit by storms though, in the summer the waterfalls around the area are great for swimming and having fun in. A lot of places in Michigan are like that though. And funny, as I never flew into Mackinaw, but arrived my preferred way..by sailboat, which was our 'room' to stay for the night. That Bonanza you fly with that glass cockpit is so sweet, don't want to say "back in my day.." but they've made it so nice now, and with how advanced ForeFlight is now it has made it so much easier, nicer, and yes even safer for all of aviation anymore.

I love Mackinac Island! Been there several times over the years. It is absolutely glorious in the fall colors - and the fudge is without a doubt the best you've ever had! Riding a bicycle around the periphery of the island is gorgeous any time of year and the old historic fort is terrific to see. But - you missed one of the best parts - and that's staying overnight in one of the elegant bed and breakfasts or hotel. They are more than worth the $400 a night to wake up the next morning - not to the sound of traffic - but of horses clomping along outside. It's a very quiet and peaceful place to spend a restful night.

I know this is a nit but I like the way you are “gentle” with the equipment. I find that most machines (automobiles) and other products such as clothing, are designed and manufactured to withstand fairly rough treatment. I don’t slam doors, glove boxes, etc., and my stuff lasts a long time and gives me very little trouble.

You were right in my backyard! I'm near Traverse City, have a PA-28-180 based at 4y4. You should stop by Pelston (KPLN). They have a bar/restaurant above the terminal building called Hoppies Landing. great view of the runways while you eat. Also should have mentioned that Mackinac Island has a landing fee even for GA planes. And the fort on the island is a must see too. If you're ever in the area again message me and I'll give you some nice to see places around here.

Hey Matt, I love your content. I'm a pilot myself- like so many though it's been a while since Ive flown, which is a shame since it used to be such a big part of my life. However, I have had the pleasure of flying into Mackinac twice, once as a passenger in a Piper Senaca (piloted by Howard Fried- "the Examiner") and a 2nd time as PIC in an Archer- both times I had my older brother with me.

She talks! She doesn't say MUCH, but when she does, she is very funny, and right on point. She's clearly very smart, like Matt, and I think she is very cool. I don't know if she is a pilot, too, but it wouldn't surprise me if she were. Matt's other friends that he has taken on trips with him (that I have seen so far) are also all pilots and amazingly awesome in their own right and are also worth watching. For those who are envious, there is just a whole nice group of them right there to be extremely envious of! Me, I just admire and am inspired. It is amazing that there are people like that and I am glad that there are; in my view, they enhance the awareness of possibilities for others.

Such a magnificent area you went to in this video. I love the upper half of the Michigan glove (Sleeping Bear Dunes, Charlevoix, and Petoskey, and also the U.P.) I have been across that bridge and seen Mackinac Island from the bridge, but never have been on that island. Frankly, I assumed its only attraction was that magnificent hotel which I do think, all by itself, would make it worth a trip except it was way too rich for my blood at the time and therefore chalked that one up for "some other time". However, you opened it way up, everything about Mackinaw Island looked appealing, and now that is on my list of must go-tos.

You did well waiting until later to depart Oshkosh. At sun n fun I got in the plane when everyone else did and waited in line for 45 minutes. Poor engine was getting warm sitting on the ground forever

I wish I had known about the Pitot tube bugs prior to my flight to Mackinac Island (many years ago)! I found out the hard way when I lost my air speed indicator upon departure. I made landing in St Ignace where bug was removed and the remainder of my flight was un-eventful.

By the way, I in a close shot of your engine add-oil port I noticed some tan sludge under the cap lock. This means your oil has been cooked at some time. Watch what they put in at the next change; grease monkeys are all the same. Watch what oil is added. If Beech permits, use 100% synthetic at the proper viscosity. If you're flying at night and sludge blocks a crank oil port and your engine slows way down or freezes, you're a dead duck. You don't have a Cirrus parachute. I would professionally cleanse the entire engine and oil pan of old oil deposits; LET EVERYTHING DRAIN OVERNIGHT and put in the absolute best oil available. Don't take oil for granted. AND, where condensation is possible in the gas, or in winter, use some gas conditioner. In cars, I use STP Gas Treatment; stabilizes ethanol and takes water out. I don't suppose aviation gas has ethanol.

Matt, next time you go to Oshkosh, land at Menominee, MI, then get a car, cross the River, into Marinette, and have a burger at Mickey Lu Bar-B Q. You can thank me later!
