Note: you cannot play XSX optimised games from an external drive like this. It's not fast enough.
But for unoptimised games you will indeed notice the performance increase (so long as the external drive is an SSD)
you can , they just don;t want you to play them from the HDD , every moden game on pc can be run with really slow hdd , all this is a marketing strategy forcing you to buy internal nvme , or the card xbox series x have
@@deadscene1 no, it literally doesn’t allow you to put optimised games on an external hdd in xsx. It blocks you.

@@coyley72 what? I put all my games on the external HDD. Even the optimized ones. I just need to transfer them to my main storage if I want to play. It doesn't block me from doing anything.
@@coyley72 The only games that works on it are Rocket League and The Master Chief Collection, which has a slower load time as a result. All the other "optimized for Series S/X" games requires you to transfer it to your console's drive.
You've answered my biggest question which was the difference in time between transfer vs download speeds. Now I'll get me an external. Was totally on the fence. Appreciate you bro! Just gained a sub.

Microsoft and Xbox need to resovle the xbox series x/s external storage better than we spent 220 dollar for Ssd 1tb 😕😕😕
Both consoles need to fix this. Atleast my xbox allows me to store Series X optimized games on an external hard drive, but my playstation 5 doesn't allow this for PS5 games (only PS4 games). I understand the playing the games part from the external storage device, because you loose out on the next gen features, but the storing the games part is weird to me.
I have a series S and I have cod black ops and 2k21 that's it ....I already have no space left and then there's a update almost everyday....smh this is some bull

You covered two main concerns i had about the wd usb game drive and the xbox series s. The two being cant reformat after formatting to games and apps and how you cant play optimized games from the external drive.

Thanks for the video. So to play directly from an external storage device what kind of device would I need?
So basically for any game that is “Optimized for series X/S” requires the special memory card.
HOWEVER - all of your older games that were released prior to the Series editions are playable from *any* external storage. The only requirement is that it has to be 128gb or more and then it has to be USB 3.0 at minimum.
So if you play Warzone or Apex, those run from the USB externals. If you want to play Resident Evil Village Optimized for X/S it has to be located on the internal drive or the Seagate memory card.

I think I know the answer to this, I just want to make sure it is correct. If I have an external hard drive already formatted for the Xbox One with games already installed it, do I need to reformat the same external hard drive from my Xbox One, when I plug it into my Xbox Series X?
Unplug from Xbox one, plug into series x.
If it's already formatted for Xbox one, then no reformatting is needed on Xbox series X.

Is there any way to see beforehand you first download a game whether it supports external HDD or needs to be installed internally?
If you are gonna download a game and it has a X/S logo something like that, it has to be installed on the internal storage.
If it doesn't have the logo, then you can directly play it from the external device.
Hope this solved your problem and sorry if i was confusing.

Great video, not entirely accurate though. You can play Xbox 360 games, Xbox One games and some Xbox Series games from the drive (e.g. Division 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Ori and the will of the Wisps and Halo: Master Chief Collection are all Series X/S optimised but are all playable from a USB 3 hard drive)

If it has a X/S logo it means that you can only run those games from the internal storage, if it's an Xbox one or 360, even classic Xbox you can store it an run it from the external drive, right? Correct me if I'm wrong, I just got mine yesterday and I've almost run out of storage.
i think the video should have clarified what you just said that optimized games can’t be played off the hard drive but non-optimized games can still be played off the hard drive

I ordered the WD _ Black 5TB yesterday just to store extra games on my XBOX “S”. My XBOX “S” held Halo Infinite for me and Fortnite for my daughter on it’s own hard drive but not much left. Hope this was the right choice? I do’t care about waiting on load times.@Geek Street

HDD/Hard drives are mechanical drives, SSD is soild state drive which is much faster in most cases. As for the series s/x games you cannot play them off the external drives just older games, xbox 360' xbox one etc. Not the new series games.

External storage is beyond pointless just get the segate internal storage
It's not that the drive can't play the game, it's Microsoft blocking it. USB3 is fast enough to transfer the game data during play. Like you said, it transferred 22gb in 4 min. So why isn't it fast enough to play a game? 🤔 Microsoft are devious. We all know it but just accept it.

It’s not working for me and I have the same one. Works on my Xbox one S. On my Series S it was working for about 30min and now it won’t detect it. Since the beginning it didn’t want to detect I did a power cycle again and again and nothing. I wouldn’t doubt this is something from Microsoft just to get us to buy the official Microsoft series x/s storage expander. Any help ?

Why we choose the ex hdd for all new games? We need to use the internal for play the games and after we move it on the wd, for space on internal so we keep current media?

Well.. My HDD doesnt show up. I got the seagate 4t for xbox. it showed up at first but now its gone

Dude, it doesn’t expand it! You’re just reallocating space assigned. It is insightful though, because I just bought a nvme ssd for adding memory to my Series S.

However if its any seageta external hdd,you can play on it xbox one games or 360. You can keep xs ootimesed games but you can t play xs optimised games without move them on internal hdd.

Not not at all, just slightly longer load times. Optimised games for X/S can't run directly off that drive anyways.
