Congratulations for verifying what I've been saying since "cold air intakes" hit the market.....they suck in hot engine compartment air, which is less dense, and contains less oxygen as a result, making less power. The factory air duct system actually brings in cooler air from in front of the radiator (typically) and REMOVING that fresh air system for something that draws in air from the hot engine compartment is ridiculous, from a power making standpoint. The 1 mpg increase seems real and is interesting though. So glad you were able to recover from your injuries. Please stay away from motorcycles. The old timers saying is "There's 2 kinds of motorcycle riders; those who have laid a bike down, and those who are going to lay a bike down." Stay safe.
I recently installed an S&B CAI on my car for just over $300. It definitely breaths easier than stock, and works better than I was anticipating. It won't give you a huge increase in horsepower on its own, but it's still noticeable. And the exhaust is noticeably louder when accelerating over 3k rpms. I'd recommend it, as it's a fun and easy performance mod.
Your running a open box so of course it is pulling engine heat in. To see a difference you need a closed system pulling air from somewhere besides the engine bay
The cowl (where your AC gets outside air) is a great place as it's cool, safe from rain or snow and gives you a bunch of extra room in the engine bar by removing the giant factory airbox
the box isnt open once the hood is closed. the rubber strip you put around the housing becomes a seal when the hood is closed so that open compartment is now cold air completely seperate from engine bay heat
Currently have an open box system, not much of an mpg difference but you hear the engine noise a bit more. Ordered a closed box kit and will be installing that, we'll see what happens
Just watched this because I am researching cold air intake for my Honda Pilot and your video was very informative. Even though you didn't put this video with visuals quite like you wanted to, it was very well done and very helpful. Thank you for putting this together and sharing this content.
“Babe it’s saving us $$$!” Haha 😂😂😂. Love the continuation of the content, John. CAI and exhaust are the next two things I’m looking to do with my Silverado.
My Silverado(they all do)have a cold air intake from the factory. I replaced that square box in front of the throttle body with a round pipe from Air Aid. Might have made it a little quicker off the line, hard to tell. Does open up some space under there. Had an F150 that I put a K&N kit that drew from under the hood...super noisy, not good noise either.
AFE Momentum GT cold air intake!! Definitely worth it! More Power - More Torque ... no tuning necessary, and it's a Closed Box design VS your open shield that kinda deflects engine heat. You're gonna get what you pay for.
Lol I have the same K&N in my 05 silverado. I'm trying to switch it out with a closed one. Run into S&B but they don't ship it to communist state of California yet. Now thinking of volant.
Let's see...K&N Cold air intake from Amazon $274.00. MPG savings 1 mile/gallon...so 25 miles on my full tank, which gets 15m/gallon at we'll say 3.00/gal...So fuel costs me .20/mile, so I save 120/yr..so the K&N pays for itself in roughly 2.5 yrs...hrm. My maths probably way off, but I have a feeling I could save just as much money by getting my gas at Costco.
But yet the gas at casco is no good tbh i filled up their and notcied that i had to refill my tank again the next day as the gad burns way quicker for some reason.. i put gas at chevron or fastrip most of the time and 91.. but casco gas is no good tbh... it dont last at all..
@@peterfix7411 You are correct. The ethenol in their gas burns faster. I believe they use something like 10-15%. Also cold air intake boosts throttle response and adds about 15-20hp.
Also using cheaper gas means it is usually lower octane.. Even though it is represented as a certain octane, it's cheaper because it's cut with less octance rich fuel. So you'd be putting shitty fuel in your engine.
I hear you have to get a tune to really get the full affect of a cold air intake. Other wise it's just for sound. But everyone says something different so idk.
I did the K&N blackhawk + magnaflow cat back.. other then sounding 100x better, no difference really in power or mpg.. i honestly think just adding a flat panel k&n to the stock setup would've been better and i could've bought a tuner instead
John is it about a 10HP gain? Do you think the K&N is better than other expensive and cheap versions? How often do you clean and oil it, twice a year? Have you ever used a coolant additive that cools your engine temp like watter wetter?, do they work?
I have a 2001 Chevy Suburban, 5.3L. Before installing the CAI, I was only getting 12 or 13 mpg. After installing I got 19.7mpg. Yes, I thought it was wrong! So, I filled the tank again, got 18.5. I am now a believer in the CAI.
I had one on my 2015 Dodge Charger RT and it made the car get SUPER HOT at drive thrust....Then as I drove, it was always about 13 degrees hotter than ambient temperature. It sounded way better and I just was ok with the heat it sucked from the engine bay. Sold it and stock back on. I feel the heat will mess up something with time.
TY so much for your research content. But what did you mean you lost some MPG's following the EXHAUST mod? I thought the freer flowing exhausts were helping. Was this due to more restrictions in the pipes / muffler / resonators AFTER the Cat Converter?

Some of the K&N CAI have a rubber stripping you install so that the hood closes the box in, same concept I guess. Mine won't be here for 3 more days so I can test it out.
I have the aFe intake in my 5.3! I noticed a difference in throttle response and maybe slight better acceleration according to my butt dyno. Shortly after that and the full exhaust, I purchased a Diablosport Trinity and had DiabLew make me a custom tune. It ran so much better once the custom tune was installed! I just received my VOLANT closed cold air intake and am waiting fir my DiabloSport Tuner to be delivered, and THEN I’ll install both and clean the MAF and throttle bottle while I’m down there. I have an ‘02 2500HD 8.1L Vortec

Is there some kind of duct brining in fresh air from outside? Because if not, it’s just sucking the hot air from the engine bay. Technically that’s not a cold air intake, it’s a short ram air intake.
I think if I tuned the truck properly to take in consideration cooler and more direct air, and more airflow out the exhaust it would correct the issue and yield better fuel mileage. Same thing with HP gains. From my understanding you definitely gain some with bolting it on, however a tune will gain you the best increases! Adjusting the CPU for the cooler and easier air flows. Hope that makes sense!
I am thinking of installing a short ram in my acura TL purely for throttle response. The Dbw sucks. It is also easier to clean and replace the ram filter. I drive 90 percent highway so my intake temperature may be more stable.
l Pronox shoot @lmfscrew a message on Instagram.. he has the Airaid Jr kit you’re thinking about getting and has a few videos on it on his UA-cam channel as well.
Try putting it on a dyno first with stock intake then the cold intake. you should get between 8 and 12 kilowatts more at the wheels with the cold intake.
Hey, at least you can still walk, unlike a customer her son was hit head on by a drunk it will be sometime before he can walk or ride his bike. I was few weeks ago heading home a lead car on 2 lane highway at 55 mph suddenly swerved rids in front of my Silverado I had enough time to say a swear word and jerk the steering wheel onto the shoulder. Their mirror was extremely close to me.
It's not really a CAI: the engine bay is not properly sealed. For that reason the inlet temperature is higher than with the standard intake, that was sealed to the side of the carbody
By definition alone it's not a "cold air" intake. The stock system actually pulls air from the "outside" through the fender. The K&N full systems as well as others like it just pull hot air from inside the engine bay. The only advantage they have is the additional amount of air they can pull from the surface area of the cone filter and possibly the routing of the air to the intake to reduce flutter or turbulence. In my opinion, these systems are only efficient or effective with the addition of upgraded turbos and full exhaust systems. As a stand alone they are a poor placement of your hard earned money and offer little performance improvement. That said, they do look cool.
Would the cold air intake have different result if it was in an enclosed insulated box? I noticed the k n didn’t have one and I was looking cold air induction model that is concealed and insulated ?
Typically you do a bit.. just because you’re letting your truck exhale a lot faster and with more volume. My set up after exhaust I lost only about 1mpg average so nothing too bad. Truck ran a lot better but sacrificed a little fuel.
@@JohnWargo93 So you just lost the minimal MPG increase you got with $$$$ hot (not really cold was it ?)overall intake system, That makes enough sense.... you came about even except you gained some real "cool" noise. For how much money invested ??
Get smart, fab an aluminum filter box get a cai for it and have external tubes from aluminum box pulling fresh air from somewhere other than the engine bay, results steady colder air better mpg. Depending on certain motors, throttle body spacers can even help with a little mpg and throttle response. I have a 1998 2500 dually with the 350 vortec 4l80e combo , 3:73 gears on 35s and it gets 17-18 mpg on average
Well i agree cold air intakes take in hot engine air except mine... i bought a new hood that had the air duct and the air duct actually channles the air from outside into the cold air intake filter.
Thanks for the breakdown dude. Gee if there was only a duct in the front. Eh so why did the exhaust decrease the mpg? Do you have to tune or would you try that to gain performance or mileage? Have you noticed the engine temperature? My rig always runs about 210 ( on the display ).. I've thought about running a colder thermostat and then getting a tune with both of these mods.
This is true, yes. Without proper tuning of the air/fuel ratio the fuel mileage is a little worse. Went from 17/18 city, 20/21 hwy down to about 15/16 city and 18/19 highway. I’m pretty sure one you get a legit tune, the free flowing exhaust would be a bit better!
@@JohnWargo93 thanks for your response, i also heard that after install of the free flowing exhaust the stock ECM would adjust / adapt to the new air flow. 2018 Ram 1500
I have heard from mechanics that cold air intakes do not work. If you think about it if you're driving your vehicle in the summertime there's no cold air from the outside to make any difference. If you ever notice when you're driving around in the winter time when the air cold your vehicle always tends to run better because it actually has cold air going into the engine!
awesome videos man! just received my MBRP exhaust (same exhaust you just installed), looking into getting this Cold air intake and ordered the ready lift upper control arms (motofab were out of stock). The inconsistent temps are cause its in open air filter to the motor. Thats why k&N dont really work amd I prefer s&b theres a hude difference in temps amd performance
Get Pedal Commander!!! It doesn't change anything inthe ECU or the pattern, but it DOES make the throttle respond much faster and react the way you want the truck to!!!!
I see you added a open top cold air intake. Some manufacturers have cold air intakes that have the top closed with a panel. That may stop a lot of the hot engine air that the open top doesn't.
I just bought Rough Country CAI and installed it on 2010 Silverado… only thing I can tell difference is in sound and take off… I wouldn’t suggest doing it…
I put a sealed box on my 2010 4x4 suburban mine around town I dont check anything, but on a California to Pennsylvania trip I put 6k miles round tripI gained 4 mpg after puting it .I went from 18.9 mpg to 24.o mpg that was at highway speed of 70 to 80 mph and the average for the entire trip
Drilling standard airbox is best solution off course on the dirty side but no tu much mybe 15 holus withh 10 mm diametar on side airbox where cold air coming...greetings from Split Croatia
John, no you haven't covered everything. You didn't cover the fact that you need to adjust your settings of your ECU (Engine Control Unit) a mini computer. As all modern vehicles have them, they do as it suggests, manages your engine. As the cars are tuned with all the stock fittings. If you put after-market gear on your car and not adjust/tune your cars ECU to accommodate the changes, then of course your car will not operate as expected. Temps will still be high as your putting a performance enhancing part into a stock environment, although you did cover temps as such, but don't you think you need some form of 'outside-the-engine bay' air? Then you'll get the 'cold-air' for your intake. Otherwise, an informative video.

Correct… pretty much my whole explanation in the video. Results were sucking in hotter air than the stock air box.
You’re supposed to put an aluminum box around the bottom part of the cold air intake so it doesn’t suck in the hot air from the engine
So if you add an exhaust the gas saving benefits go away?.....(but do you gain power if it)
I think if I tuned the truck properly to take in consideration cooler and more direct air, and more airflow out the exhaust it would correct the issue and yield better fuel mileage. Same thing with HP gains. From my understanding you definitely gain some with bolting it on, however a tune will gain you the best increases! Adjusting the CPU for the cooler and easier air flows. Hope that makes sense!
Air intake was moved from center grill to a corner behind the lights with no access to cool air...
how come adding a performance intake slowed my 0-60 from originally 5.2 seconds to now a 6.4? i have a 2021 camaro 2.0, can someone explain this?
Any "check engine" light issues after a K&N is installed? Dealership in my area seems to think that the K&N cause issues??
Never had 1 ✊🏼
Love the truck and super helpful video that was well put together. Keep up the good content!
And i am running an S&B cold air induction intake, with 3 inch exhaust all the way to the end. 8 inch lift with 35inch X 12.5 tires
A clean stock air filter has a lot to do with + MPG's. A dirty one will definitely decrease your MPG's!
Yeah true that, but a dirty K&N or Volant filter still out flow a new stock paper filter hands down...
I am thinking of installing a short ram in my acura TL purely for throttle response. The Dbw sucks. It is also easier to clean and replace the ram filter. I drive 90 percent highway so my intake temperature may be more stable.
Don't know if i should step up or be fine with the Airaid Jr. Intake Tube Kit with a dry air filter keeping stock box.. Recommendations?.
l Pronox shoot @lmfscrew a message on Instagram.. he has the Airaid Jr kit you’re thinking about getting and has a few videos on it on his UA-cam channel as well.
@@JohnWargo93 been running the kit for a while now and loving it, just don't know if I should step up to a cold air intake .
l Pronox I’m not sure personally.. never ran anything other than the stock air box and then the K&N.
Do you really lose gas mileage with exhaust. Don't you get better air flow of the exhaust. So not alot of back pressure
I’ll try rough country and give my results,.....jkn i actually dont mind rough country but i think i’ll go with K & N
I just ordered on but im planning on getting the exhaust system done next ..I got an 04 yukon
Don't have to worry as long as you have a boosted car or truck that the air goes through an intercooler. Obviously his truck isnt
Would the cold air intake have different result if it was in an enclosed insulated box? I noticed the k n didn’t have one and I was looking cold air induction model that is concealed and insulated ?
Yeah man so if you get an S&B CAI they’re typically enclosed and help a lot actually
Thanks for showing every angle of your truck, geez.
Welcome!
makes a big difference on a turbo car...not so much on a naturally aspirated engine.
Great video. Thank you. But did I hear you say if you add a fancy exhaust like a Flowmaster or whatever you will lose MPG?
Typically you do a bit.. just because you’re letting your truck exhale a lot faster and with more volume. My set up after exhaust I lost only about 1mpg average so nothing too bad. Truck ran a lot better but sacrificed a little fuel.
@@JohnWargo93 So you just lost the minimal MPG increase you got with $$$$ hot (not really cold was it ?)overall intake system, That makes enough sense.... you came about even except you gained some real "cool" noise. For how much money invested ??
@@donsigler588 like literally $250… it’s not that big of a deal, lol
Get smart, fab an aluminum filter box get a cai for it and have external tubes from aluminum box pulling fresh air from somewhere other than the engine bay, results steady colder air better mpg. Depending on certain motors, throttle body spacers can even help with a little mpg and throttle response. I have a 1998 2500 dually with the 350 vortec 4l80e combo , 3:73 gears on 35s and it gets 17-18 mpg on average
Why is your truck shifting at 4k rpm on the 0 to 60 pulls or are you not full throttle
Comparing the same fuel? Winter vs summer fuel?
All 93 octane.. I’m sure this bled from summer into fall so might be slightly mixed “blends” if you will.
Well i agree cold air intakes take in hot engine air except mine... i bought a new hood that had the air duct and the air duct actually channles the air from outside into the cold air intake filter.
I’d recommend changing your plugs when u do this just for peace of mind and to add to the better mpg
are you talking about spark plugs
Thanks for the breakdown dude. Gee if there was only a duct in the front. Eh so why did the exhaust decrease the mpg? Do you have to tune or would you try that to gain performance or mileage? Have you noticed the engine temperature? My rig always runs about 210 ( on the display ).. I've thought about running a colder thermostat and then getting a tune with both of these mods.
Great video man! Appreciate your feedback. Doing research for my 14 ram with the 5.7
Stay safe man!
Me too man. You decide to put one on?
Did I hear you say with aftermarket exhaust you got worse gas mileage? Is that true? I thought a free flowing exhaust would improve gas mileage
..??
This is true, yes. Without proper tuning of the air/fuel ratio the fuel mileage is a little worse. Went from 17/18 city, 20/21 hwy down to about 15/16 city and 18/19 highway. I’m pretty sure one you get a legit tune, the free flowing exhaust would be a bit better!
@@JohnWargo93 thanks for your response, i also heard that after install of the free flowing exhaust the stock ECM would adjust / adapt to the new air flow. 2018 Ram 1500
What's a quarter intake?
I have heard from mechanics that cold air intakes do not work. If you think about it if you're driving your vehicle in the summertime there's no cold air from the outside to make any difference. If you ever notice when you're driving around in the winter time when the air cold your vehicle always tends to run better because it actually has cold air going into the engine!
Why some people go the ram air option.
@@IL_BgentylRAM is velocity with minimal cold air.
Stock box with the mod is a better choice
With what mod?
I put a CAI in my 08 sierra. Wasnt happy with the loss in low end torque. Put my factory airbox back in
09 here and 6.0L just noisy and a waste. I dislike them.
awesome videos man! just received my MBRP exhaust (same exhaust you just installed), looking into getting this Cold air intake and ordered the ready lift upper control arms (motofab were out of stock). Also about to put on my MOTIV8D sticker!
i was just curious on if you've had any problems with CV Axles on your truck? I have a 3in leveling kit with 33x12.5s on 20 inch rims and my Driver side CV axle is already on the way out. just curious if you've had any similar experiences.
Keep up the awesome videos man!
Greg Simpson hey man, appreciate the support!! No CV issues for me fingers crossed 🤞🏼 28K miles with the 2.5” level and no problems to date
Alright man! Good on ya! Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it! Stay MOTIV8D buddy!
Thanks for this. I just bought my 2014 that already had the same CAI installed, and was curious about the numbers.
The inconsistent temps are cause its in open air filter to the motor. Thats why k&N dont really work amd I prefer s&b theres a hude difference in temps amd performance
Yup, I went with a S&B on the current truck!
Not understanding the performance muffler causing worse fuel mileage. I thought intakes and exhaust work together
I believe they do once tuned properly
Nice work. Honest an informative.
Appreciate that!
Are getting engine light after cold air intake?
@@saifaviator268 negative. Put the same intake on my brothers truck as well. Neither of us have had any issues.
does it really give better mileage ? and no check engine?
Yes I run them on every vehicle I own… never had any issues with check engine lights
what exhaust kit do you have on that bad boy?
Just a cheap MBRP cat back. Very happy with it for a pipe under $400!
Why you didn’t mash it wide open I a mystery
Nice video, did the check engine light come on tho?
Not once... comes with the right stuff to hook up the MAF sensor to the new intake. Otherwise it probably would come on.
Yes they do. I have 2016 and my best mileage was 27 mpg.. Average is 19-23
What are you running, 5.3 or 6.2 & any other modifications, factory tires? Thanks
very informative, thanks for sharing, I am researching cold air intakes for my 23 tundra, might go w the TRD intake
You need a intercooler to make these make sense. I wouldnt put these on a NA motor
Get Pedal Commander!!! It doesn't change anything inthe ECU or the pattern, but it DOES make the throttle respond much faster and react the way you want the truck to!!!!
Tune > shitty pedal commander
I see you added a open top cold air intake. Some manufacturers have cold air intakes that have the top closed with a panel. That may stop a lot of the hot engine air that the open top doesn't.
Yup.. this video is a few years old. My truck now on the channel, I bought a closed S&B intake. Much better
Hey man I was wondering if you noticed any power difference in you truck?
Nahh not really. Definitely better throttle response and a cool sound!
@@JohnWargo93 Okay thanks for the quick reply.
I just bought Rough Country CAI and installed it on 2010 Silverado… only thing I can tell difference is in sound and take off… I wouldn’t suggest doing it…
Sounds like you're saying corner air or quarter intake
How did you lose mpg putting aftermarket exhaust on it?
Cody Dunn not entirely too sure.. 🤔 have to do some more testing I could be wrong. Don’t fault the truck anymore like I used to.
Because it’s not tuned for it. Simple
If you don’t mind me asking, do you have the 5.3 or 6.0? I have a 2012 Tahoe with the 5.3 and I’m planning on installing a cold air intake
The truck he put it in the ecu should adjust automatically
@@Ttow49 Some do, most don't.
