L-1011 has a perfect saftey record (beside the microburst and pilot errors). The MD-11 & DC-10 had numerous issues. I would love to fly on one of these

There was also the Saudia fire on an L-1011. But, the L-1011 did have the best safety record of the first-generation widebodies (DC-10, 747, L-1011, Airbus A300). It’s definitely an engineer’s airplane. The DC-10, by contrast, was a businessman’s airplane.

In the beginning we had problems keeping them on wing for 250 hours. Rolls could not keep up with parts and improvements. We had L1011s with "Solid State Engines" parked at LAX and MCI for months. By solid state I mean engines robbed and chained to cement block weights. The engines were improved it took a few years. The RB was never as bad as the CF6s. The CF6 was always spilling its guts.

This aircraft made me love airplanes... There were a lot more domestic wide bodies in the 80's and 90's but most of them retired in the early 2000's. I remember walking onto this jet for the first time in the late 80's and I felt like I was in an auditorium it was so big. I even remember liking it more than the DC-10's I flew on. I think it's easily the most beautiful, most well designed passenger aircraft in history and I wish Lockheed would take another stab at it -- putting both Boeing and Airbus in their place, again...

The L1011 sold so few that it cost Lockheed almost $1billion in losses due to not enough sales to make it profitable. Twin jets are the bread and butter now. But I agree that it is an awesome aircraft. I wish there was one flying that has brand new, comfortable seats with entertainment, etc.

I had the privilege and honor of flying in a L-1011 in 1998 from Toronto Canada to Athens Greece onboard Air Transat... Probably my most memorable flight... That sounds and that awesome cruising speed! ... I've done that flight countless times and that L1011 still holds the record at 8 hours 54 minutes. The L1011 symbolized the golden era of flying, when flying held a certain prestige when every seat was cushioned for total comfort and had an ashtray and the airline food was actually good, because we lived in better times.... Seems like planes are getting slower and alot more uncomfortable with these transit bus style seats, all they care about is profits. Make the seats smaller, less leg room, jam as many seats into an aircraft as possible, charge an arm and a leg for baggage, serve disgusting barely eatable food, charge extra for drinks and then fly slow... There was a time people hoped their flights were longer because they enjoyed being on the plane... Now people can't wait to get off the plane.... How sad.

Very under-rated aircraft in its' day, and quite a machine to fly on. Smooth ride, tight handling according to those who flew it, very safe, and plenty sexy too with the RR engine whine, good looks, performance, sound of the center engine in the tail, and even the hydraulic flap noises. I flew on several of these with DL, a few with EA, and once on TW. Favorite flight was in 1/96 from SFO to ATL, upon moving back east. Sign of better things to come, that takeoff remains etched in my mind.

This was one of the coolest aspects of flying in the 80s-90s (for me it was the 90s). You never knew what you were gonna get. One time I ended up on a DC-10 for a short hop from Boston to Detroit. We flew on a Delta L-1011 on the way to Disney when I was still practically a toddler. Another time, it was a 767 from Boston to Atlanta. More often you’d be in a 737-200 or some species of DC-9…but wide bodies were much more common so you’d occasionally wind up on something huge and completely unexpected.

I didn't know people thought about making these kinds of takeoff videos in the '90s. Most of the ones I watch are 2010+

This suddenly brought back another memory: flying from Korea to Hong Kong on a Cathay Pacific L1011. I remember it because it had bare metal engine cowlings with the Rolls Royce logo stamped on them. Beautiful.

Thank you for sharing this video. My pulse quickens when I hear the sounds of those classic engines. While today's airliners are safer and more efficient, I miss those classic jets from the old days. They had so much more style and character.

I twice sat in that thing in 1994. From JFK to LAX and 3 weeks later from LAX to KTL. I loved those flights! The engine sound is amazing.
I still remember that my father said: "Stop wasting our Hi8 cassettes and camera battery!!!!" But I had to film the takeoff and landing.

Lockheed Tristar L1011 hands down. Lot of fond memories non-reving out JFK late at night, city lights below and the feel/hear of those winding RR engines. Or the Delta runs from LA to Hawaii. Good times 80's & 90's. My fav jet of all time. Legendary..... Pure beauty.... that's was the heyday of Commercial Aviation.

I remember flying on one of these beauties sometime in the mid 90's... I was only 7 or 8 years old at the time but I distinctly remember being excited because I had finally got to fly in a
L-1011. I remember my dad being particularly excited about the flight on the L-1011 too. It's a shame that I wasn't older when I was on it so I could remember the experience better today now that I'm 26. All I can say is that I feel lucky to have flown on an L-1011 before they were taken out of service.

I miss the trijets. Used to fly Delta L-1011s from FRA to Atlanta with some frequency back in the 1980s. Just hated the way you never got the smell of kerosene out of your nostrils, but what nostalgia! Thanks.

    This is cool,
I flew from Manchester England to Atlanta Georgia US on schedule flights with Delta airlines between 1995 and 1996. The ones I went on were Delta's finest 1984 production.
The engines were Rolls Royce RB211. The Tristar bankrupted RR and nearly Lockheed !

Happy day. I used to work for Delta's cargo GSA in the UK 1992 - 1998 and we got the all time cargo load record of general freight LGW-ATL 22,000kgs. I still have the load sheet somewhere. Unmistakeable engine note on takeoff. HAppy memories

I remember being evacuated out of the west indies on a fully loaded BWIA L1011-500 back in the early 90s before Hurricane Luis hit. It was a hell of a departure with one ambandoned takeoff before we finally got in the air. Hell of an aircraft the l1011!

  • @howardcod4

The sound is fantastic I would take my walkman off and listen to the takeoff, just lovely! The other airliner comparable to the L-1011 is the B-777 I have flown on that several times even the configuration in coach is the same 2-5-2 and those GE-90s engines are also a beautiful noise!
