The shooting range was the second test. As MiB you have to think, before you act and "Jay" showed that skill perfectly while the Army/Navy/Airforce Soldiers shoot before they think. In any regular combat situation, that comes in handy, because you identify your target and shoot. But in the agency, you could accidently harm or kill a friendly alien only because of his looks

    • @ThatSamoanGuy
      @ThatSamoanGuy 3 місяці тому +9

@@Anthyrion Yes, adding on to that: Jay's observations about "Little Tiffany" mirror Kay's observations about Mikey in the opening scene. Mikey took on a disguise and traveled with immigrants, not realizing that being unable to understand another human language gives him away. Similarly, the hypothetical "Little TIffany" alien grabbed some books to disguise itself as a child from school, not realizing that the context of the books gives itself away in a similar manner. Both Kay and Jay display an aptitude for sniffing out the truth, which is crucial for MiB, while both Mikey and Little Tiffany made the same mistake of missing context clues and ultimately gave themselves away (very much like "the British 3 vs the German 3" in Inglorious Basterds).

Men in Black as a concept comes from conspiracy theorist / UFO lore, where it is used to describe government agents (in black suits) who allegedly interrogate, harass, memory-wipe or assassinate UFO witnesses. So yeah, that's why the movie is called that. Somebody took that concept and ran with it.

Yeah and the original Aircel/Malibu Comic Book which was later bought out by MARVEL around the time the first sequel to this film was in production was based on all sorts of conspiracy theories, not just aliens and the MIB themselves were much more morally ambiguous like in the original concept from the 1950s than outright heroic like in The Film, Video Game, Theme Park attractions and animated series!

One of the things to recognize with the marble scene is the scale of things. When you saw the galaxy on orion's collar, you commented on how small it is and if there are microscopic beings living in there. Put 2 and 2 together with the final scene being a relation to that scene. You thought that galaxy was small. Those aliens were playing marbles with several galaxies. To them, we would be just as tiny as you thought of the potential beings in the one on the collar. And what's to say that the marble playing aliens aren't in the same situation, and how many more levels does it go? Obviously, it is a plot point and not realistic since we can see several other galaxies outside the milky way, but it is something interesting to think about.

6:28 - Great pre-active joke here, Edgar getting stopped by the bug screen.
29:45 - They established when J was first getting screened that the towers were space ships in disguise. J remembered them by looking at the mural. All Edgar needed to do was recognize the ships on that postcard, which is why he took it.
39:17 - The idea that the government knows about aliens and has been keeping the knowledge from the public has been around ever since people started believing aliens exist. The image of men in suits has always been associated with government agencies, so the idea of men in suits covering up alien encounters developed fairly quickly and evolved into the concept of the Men in Black. This concept was adapted into a comic book in 1990 and the comic was the inspiration for the movies.

I really like the scene where all the potential recruits were shooting the targets and Will only shoots the little girl. if you think about it, it shows exactly the kind of perceptiveness an MIB agent would need. A majority of the aliens they'd be dealing with will be nonviolent so going in guns blazing every time they see a freaky alien would be bad. Whereas with an alien up to no good, you'd have to be on the lookout for subtle signs that wouldn't be immediately obvious to anyone else. It's a nice piece of subtle worldbuilding that isn't overtly explained to the audience but is obvious if you think about it.

You guys are a great pair at reacting... The way you react together is lovely. You make a beautiful couple... Thor has found his Sif!
I love this movie! MIB 2 is great as well, better even in some ways.
The test scene means he passed, because he adapted to the situation in an unconventional way that no one else even considered. Something crucial in that line of work.
The other test shows that he is using his brains instead of prejustice in a hostile situation. He's not going by how they look but what seems truly suspicious. Another crucial matter in that line of work. Not all aliens are bad even if we think they are odd-looking or even ugly.

Vincent D'onofrio 😎 is one of my favorite actors - he was convincing as the cockroach here, but he's also amazing in Law & Order Criminal Intent, and as the whacked-out recruit in Full Metal Jacket. 👍

6:07 Even if you can't see it, based on what you hear, it's probably best you couldn't. Sometimes it's what you don't see is scarier.
9:10 On imdb trivia they actually have the entire joke.
11:26 Real Test: who's smart enough to use the table.
11:55 Yeah he's not shooting indiscriminately like the others, he actually took time to analyze each target and come up with a good reason not to shoot.
12:36 K's like: Okay you still don't believe me, I'll just show you the aliens then to seal the deal.
16:44 This guy here plays Lurch in the Addams Family movies(Same director as Mib: Barry Sonnenfeld)
26:06 Remember Rosenberg was tiny too, for him and the other Arquillians the galaxy would be the size of a beachball.
31:01 That's the answer we all want it to be.
33:13 Just this giant squirmy bug with all those legs stuffed into the Edgar suit(and we've seen him constantly adjusting himself to keep from poking out like nails in a burlap sack) nevermind the fact that even his ship was way smaller than he is snd he still managed to fit in it.
38:12 Earlier Frank the pug says that something important can even be very very small like size of a marble or a jewel. The other galaxy was used as a jewel on the cats collar and this galaxy is being used as a marble.

Movies are not anticipated and then seen in a vacuum. People tend to know a bit about a movie before watching it.

Also, Kay`s much older, more cynical and humorless in The Comic. Jay and Dee are the conscience and Dee quits when he discovers a dark secret of the MIB rather than retiring of old age like in The Film, Dee`s also closer to Jay`s age in The Comic.

And if you need more Tommy Lee Jones, might I suggest "The Fugitive?"

The Men In Black goes back to the 50s I believe. People who have witness an U.F.O were suddenly visited by 2 men dressed totally in black and wearing dark sunglasses. These, men in black, would then prevent the witnesses from discussing what they saw to anyway and threatening the U.F.O. witness if they didnt agree. A very dark stories. Very different from the movie.

What always surprised me about the test of the "applicants" at the organization's HQ was how little the boys made use of their improvisational talent. No thinking outside the box. Will Smith, only used the obvious thing, namely the table. But it could also have been permanently installed and therefore immovable. It may be my German mindset, but I would have just gotten out of the silly 70s armchair and filled out the questionnaire on top of the thing. Of course, that means writing while standing. Often the simplest solution is the smartest. Because with the low table, you'll get back pain in no time while writing from this armchair...
